Thanks for an excellent clear and to the point video. I spend more time dreading applying ACF50 than ever actually doing it! Ive bought the spray gun using your link - looks great and anything to make the process easier is worth it.
Someone told me this trick too and it's true. You don't need a paint gun just leave the supplied bottle in warm to hot water for 5 mins and it comes out thinly. If you already have a paint gun then sure use that but you tend to waste more with a gun imo.
I bought the sprayer in your link and I am very pleased with it, previously used a spray bottle and a rag but it was a bit of a faff and I used to get covered in it. Using the sprayer was so much easier and seems much better. As an added suprise, the sprayer will direct a very strong jet of clean air if the spray bottle trigger is not pressed so it also makes a great way to dry a bike. Thanks for the video.
Perhaps i'm the 'odd man out' with ACF, I tried it once on my old heap, which has a lot of bare, natural aluminium. Over the course of the winter it almost seemed to penetrate into the pores of the metal.... Come the spring it had soaked in and discoloured with all the road dirt and it was simply hellish to get it off, it probably took most of that summer to clean the bike back to a standard....... Never again! Ive still got some, no doubting it works well for a lot of things, very good for all weather protection. Brilliant on a rag applied to the action and barrel of a gun for instance, stuff like that but i won't be putting it on the ol' beemer again any time soon! 👍
ACF 50 is not a universal metal protectant. Especially when it comes to Motorcycles and fixtures, due to different grade metals. When ACF 50 came out, it was used by many motorcycle (All year Biker) and car detailing professionals as a winter protectant. However many people then started to see significant changes to their bikes several months later as they were daily commuters. Without going into major detail. The USAF, US Navy and the teams at AMARG including All Year Biker no longer use it due to the problems it causes. For the past 15 years I use a product that was designed by a RAF Technician along with a regular pre wash with 2 PH Neutral products one of which is a iron remover that actually does the job so well that my 12 year old high mileage bike is corrosion free.
@@thematchboxcollector What problems arose a few months after the application? I've found rain stained the plastic panels permanently with watermarks after using acf50. I've stopped using it on my motorbike and only gave my scooter a once over when I bought it cos it already had corrosion so I hoped acf50 would halt it with a liberal coating underneath the plastic body where the frame hides.

n Japan, many people spray silicone spray, which does not contain petroleum-based solvents, on cowlings, engines, and hoses. It's very inexpensive and effective. After spraying on cowlings, you can simply wipe it off or spread it around. Of course, you don't spray it on tires, seats, brakes, etc., which must not slip.
As well as covering tyres and brakes, i would cover your hand grips, gear lever rubber, rear brake rubber and footpegs (cling film is good for this) .. you dont want hands or feet to slip off those. Also, remove the sest so you dont get any on that and you can spray under there too 👍
Excellent advice, I use to do something similar with waxaloy thinned down with whitespirit and sprayed out of a paraffin wash gun 😅. CAUTION ⚠️ SPRAY MIST IN LARGE VOLUME could possibly create a fire risk if use near an open flame 😮 which could be fun😂
I just clean my Ducati thoroughly, apply a good polish, put it away under an Oxford indoor cover with the battery saver plugged in and all's good when the spring arrives.
The best way is to warm it up and aplly to all clean metal surfaces with a small paint brush, wipe with a soft cloth and use brake disc cleaner to areas no wanted discs and tyres definitely need to be cleaned off of any acf50.
If you have a compressor you can put ACF 59 in a parafin spray can. You can turn the nozzle down to a fine most and with its long nozzle you can get it into the nooks and crannies. Under the tank especially. You use far less than the aerosol cans.

Hi Andy I used XCP last year on the 125 and found the road dirt stuck to it like sh!t to a blanket. It was a real pain to remove. I bought ACF months ago but clean the bike, ride it and get it dirty again forgetting every time to apply it!!!😮
I use the sprayer, use just a little, let it migrate and spread overnight, then spread it some more with a rag, then wait a little more, then wipe any excess off.
Nice one…I will be looking into this. However, more tempted to spray outside and not in an enclosed area. Mask? Thanks again. 👍🏻 edit: it comes with 3 spray nozzle sizes. What size do you use?
Nice easy way to get that done 👌 I suppose one of those fence sprayers would do the same, do you think?? I take it you don't ride them for a while after spraying them Steve?
Hi Steve I remember when ACF50 came out when I was in Taunton Hein Gericke working, used it for a couple of winters, but found it collected the road grime and was a bugger to clean off after the winter, but perhaps I needed your spray gun, nice fine spay, here in France 🇫🇷 in the 7 years we have been here I’ve only seen salt down once, and it was just rock salt not the molasses covered stuff they use in the West Country so rinses off in 5 mins and dissolves as soon as it rains, I now just use a good quality polish and blow over the electrics with WD40. The underside of my old PX Vespa I dab a cloth into high temp grease and rub it into the the paint work like polish seems to work as there is no rust on the underside of the tin floor and leg shields when it gets grubby I wipe it off with chain cleaner and reapply once every couple of years, I also warm my bikes up and spray WD on the motor it steams up and films everything under the tank, learnt that from parking my 996 ST4 under the eaves of a south of France house (no gutters) and it poured in the night and it was like a waterfall off the roof directly onto the bike where the seat meet the tank 😟😡 ….. Pete 🇫🇷
Hi Pete, Yes some have said the same that the grime is hard to come off, but I've never found this to be the case tbh, but each to their own I guess. I do find the dirt sticks to it but washes off OK. Not much salt here at the moment but it wont be long till the spreaders are out! Have a good week in France mate
Always apply with a 1/2 paint brush personally then wipe excess off with an old T-shirt that is kept for just that purpose. Over time that T-shirt becomes loaded with it allowing for quick wipe down every week.
That spray gun seems to have worked well and very quick. First time I tried ACF 50 I tried using a few different spray bottles and just found that I was wasting too much product so went with a small dish of product and a paint brush and just painted it on. I found that I could target specific areas a lot better and get more of the product on the bike than on the floor which is nice.
Not really, legs can have a light coating, and the seat, some people spray depending on material, done don't. I don't myself on mine. All within common sense really but the pegs are worth spraying.
Hi Dave, I've heard that Exmouth council likes to lay down a lot of salt on the roads ( rather than just letting the sea do it for them 🤷♂ ) so this seems like a good idea to me ! What a great video. I've never had to use the stuff personally but if I ever did, this is definitely how I would go about doing it. I think the biggest advantage with that sprayer is the fact that it uses so little ACF. That stuff isn't cheap so the 70 quid you spent buying the sprayer has probably been more than saved in less wasted ACF. The sprayer also makes applying it properly a piece of cake ! I've always been curious about the stuff, wondering how spraying "oil" on the bike can ever result in your bike being clean again. So over time, it more or less evaporates ? You don't end up with a permanent smeary, oily film on the bike that needs to be rubbed off ? I found this video to be really interesting and I think this is going to be a great tutorial for lots of folks making their first foray into ACF treatment of their bikes. Honestly, I thought this was so interesting that for a moment there I did consider buying a sprayer and some ACF for my bikes. But then I decided that they basically never really get properly wet and dirty and that for me it would be a waste of time. But certainly a wise investment for people who choose to or have to ride in all weathers. Well done mate. I'm sure that this video will be helpful to many. Love to you and the Exmouth crew, Marcel et Sofie en France
Hey up Barry, Yes I think this stuff really comes into its own riding in the UK. French roads seem almost perfect according to your videos. I guess you may not need the stuff, but if you get any issues then this stuff works great . Have a good week and love to all at your pad. : )
Good vid, the outlay for a compressor not worth it imo. The link you put on is for a Tilswall hvlp spray gun, believe yours is a erbauar gun! has the name changed? (I personally wouldn't spray on handlebar grips & foot pegs though.....😮
Hi, grips and handle bars wipe off fine👍 The sprayer I have is not made anymore, it was a good investment and has lasted many hours of use. I wouldnt but a compresser either, HVLP gun is the best way 👍 Thanks for your time watching 🙏
I bought a hand held electric paint sprayer from screwfix for £15, put acf in the pot, put the pot in hot water for 5 mins and it works a bloody treat!! No need for hoover sized spayers, no offence 👍
It might be best if you leave this job to someone else Graham. Give it 50 years and I think you will be ready for this video. Well done for getting the information superhighway a go though...your doing great!
good idea , you can warm the stuff up to make the sprayer work , but those bottles are crap , mines broken , and went to lube a lock today , it fell apart again , covered me , the floor , non in the lock , i went mad and if i was at their show stand it would be lobbed at them , rip off ;
Yes they are pretty rubbish. The good thing with this HVLP set up is when its running it blows warm air anyway so no need to warm it up, it does it for you .
you did not add that i had to make a account with amazon so i could order ACF 50 as i can not find it anywhere else here in the states. lol then i shipped it to my address from 15 years ago and had to order it again. lol i am coming over this afternoon and i would like to see how it works on a american motorcycle with out an english accent. seriously, i did not know you just leave it on. i keep wiping it off. but i like your way better.
I leave mine on quite thick while I lay the bikes up for a few weeks but then give them a wipe down when it comes to riding again if they are still heavily covered. It's good for them to have a soak I think . Have a good week Blake.
My friend said he tried it but said it made things work and his hair started to fallout ,then got a Harley stuck in a field so noI wouldn't if I were you.
Tbh simply sticking to something simply because it's all you know, and used and ignoring others which could and are better is a little closed minded tbh, if you check out the Bennetts testing of anti corrosion protection, and if you haven't I'd strongly recommend it, you'll see that XCP rust blocker or their clear coat is easier to use than acf-50 and produces better results, which is not to say acf-50 is bad just no longer the best, especially as it tends to wash of in a few weeks dependant on the weather
Not a matter of closed minded, more a case of I can't do it all. kids family and mortgage plus a struggling business, I only have so much time and money I can invest. ACF works great for me, I'll try more when I can but I just wanted to get across how much easier application is with a HVLP sprayer rather than any other means. I will try others when things get easier. Thanks
@@exeterrider fair enough and that's understandable, and you certainly did get it across well in the video on the sprayer application front, but my point was that in the opening section you spoke as if acf-50 was almost the only option, skirting over in a vague way other possibly better products, even mis quoting the name of xcp almost as a kinda throw away point which dismisses how effective it is,now okay I get it that your main point was to show what in your experience is the better way to apply the treatment on the bike, but personally I've seen many videos about anti corrosion treatments and there seems a heavy bias in a lot of people's minds to acf-50 possibly because it's been around so long as if it's a magic bullet, but the fact is there are certainly equal or superior options, which is not to say that acf-50 is bad but just that it's far from the only choice available.
@ @ Bearing in mind the fuss that's been caused because you didn't try everything else on the market, for gawds sake don't mention what oil you use! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤭
Being a fair weather rider, ER, I don't use ACF50. I did once on my Honda and it made, in my opinion, a bit of a mess. Perhaps I slapped a bit too much on. Occasionally I now use Silkolene Pro Prep which dries to a hard coat.
I was just talking to someone else ref to older bikes...I'm not so sure this stuff suits older bikes with Magnesium cases and other bits. They need a different type of care perhaps.... I also go out less in the wet or cold stuff, mainly because I have to drop the lads off to the bus stop in the morning etc at the moment so not worth going home to mess around getting the wheels out. I haven't heard of Silkolene Pro Prep....another one to try! Have a good week Jim.
Don't be silly, you must be the odd one out. Nothing wrong with spraying the pegs and grips within using common sense. Your not going to get to those hard to reach places with a microfiber cloth are you.

If warm up the liquid helps it atomise. I always have something in the ground as drips even with hvlp
Good plan!
That’s a handy gadget for doing that. Cheers mate😊
Yeap, so much easier, quicker and better!
I get ceramic coating done on my bike. I find it less sticky so it does not attract dirt.
It’s mainly for the hard to get metal places. Well worth it.
ceramic coat is good stuff as long as you keep up with it. Thanks
@@exeterrider Yep. Ya, I get it re-coated at leaat every 6months at most. Coated professionally….
I use XCP give it ago steve it's not sticky and drys clear .. under testing just piped ACF 50 ..
Hi Andy I used XCP last year on the 125 and found the road dirt stuck to it like sh!t to a blanket. It was a real pain to remove. I bought ACF months ago but clean the bike, ride it and get it dirty again forgetting every time to apply it!!!😮
Yes will give it a go sometime...only if I can spray it on though : ) its the future!
@daveanderson70 had mine done when it was ceramic coated never have anything stick ...😁
I tried this once, but it needed degreaser to get it off again. Definitely better protection, BUT very hard to remove.
@PaulCopp fair enough, I don't find it too bad tbh. My bikes love the stuff👍
Hi Steve, ACF50 can get very gloopy when it’s cool. How do you stop your sprayer clogging up? Great video by the way. Keep up the great work.
Have a look at time stamp 2:48 mate, all explained there : )
@@exeterridersorry mate, didn’t explain myself properly. What I meant was how do you keep the sprayer nozzle from clogging up when you are not using?
Ahh I see, I flush mine through with water when I finish spraying.
I should have said that on the video in hindsight 👍
Hi Steve, good machine for putting it on.
It's perfect, gets into those non reachables👍
I use the sprayer, use just a little, let it migrate and spread overnight, then spread it some more with a rag, then wait a little more, then wipe any excess off.
Yeap, I leave it on heavy while I lay the bikes up for 3-6 weeks in the colder months , then wipe excess off when I take them out again.
@exeterrider but first do you wash the bikes "within an inch of their lives"? 🤣🤣🤣
🤣
Do you need clothes to buff up plastics after uv sprayed them
I leave it on until I ride the bike again in which case I just give it a wipe down before I go out. Thanks for watching.
Nice one…I will be looking into this. However, more tempted to spray outside and not in an enclosed area. Mask? Thanks again. 👍🏻 edit: it comes with 3 spray nozzle sizes. What size do you use?
Yes always spray outside, purely for camera lighting reasons....I have a different gun than the linked gun...It's just a guide for people. Thanks
Nice easy way to get that done 👌
I suppose one of those fence sprayers would do the same, do you think??
I take it you don't ride them for a while after spraying them Steve?
Fence sprayer is fine, Thats what this HVLP gun is I use and also used for the fence. Worth the money mate.
Hi what do you clean your gun out with once uve finished spraying
I blast out with water, I should have said.
Pete 🇫🇷
Hi Pete,
Yes some have said the same that the grime is hard to come off, but I've never found this to be the case tbh, but each to their own I guess.
I do find the dirt sticks to it but washes off OK.
Not much salt here at the moment but it wont be long till the spreaders are out!
Have a good week in France mate
@@exeterriderthe spray gun changes everything I think Steve with the trigger bottle it puts it on to thick.
100% mate
Always apply with a 1/2 paint brush personally then wipe excess off with an old T-shirt that is kept for just that purpose. Over time that T-shirt becomes loaded with it allowing for quick wipe down every week.
Fair enough, lots of ways of doing it 👍🍻
That spray gun seems to have worked well and very quick. First time I tried ACF 50 I tried using a few different spray bottles and just found that I was wasting too much product so went with a small dish of product and a paint brush and just painted it on. I found that I could target specific areas a lot better and get more of the product on the bike than on the floor which is nice.
Yeap those bottles they supply are not very good at all tbh
What are u using to power the spray gun? Thanks
its a 230v plug in job...very easy : )
I’d like to get one of those sprayers you used for the ACF50. Couldn’t make out its name, please will you advise. Thanks.
Hi, it's a HVLP spray gun. Amazon link to one is at the top of these messages.
Stand the bottle of ACF50 in warm water then give it a shake before applying
Cover the pegs and seat surely?
Not really, legs can have a light coating, and the seat, some people spray depending on material, done don't.
I don't myself on mine.
All within common sense really but the pegs are worth spraying.
Hi Dave,
I've heard that Exmouth council likes to lay down a lot of salt on the roads ( rather than just letting the sea do it for them 🤷♂ ) so this seems like a good idea to me !
Love to you and the Exmouth crew,
Marcel et Sofie en France
Hey up Barry,
Yes I think this stuff really comes into its own riding in the UK. French roads seem almost perfect according to your videos.
I guess you may not need the stuff, but if you get any issues then this stuff works great .
Have a good week and love to all at your pad. : )
What nozzle size do you use?
A fine one, but you will have to see what works for you.👍
Once you’ve sprayed the bike when it dirty do you still wash it 🤔
Wash it first👍
Good vid, the outlay for a compressor not worth it imo. The link you put on is for a Tilswall hvlp spray gun, believe yours is a erbauar gun! has the name changed?
(I personally wouldn't spray on handlebar grips & foot pegs though.....😮
Hi, grips and handle bars wipe off fine👍
The sprayer I have is not made anymore, it was a good investment and has lasted many hours of use.
I wouldnt but a compresser either, HVLP gun is the best way 👍
Thanks for your time watching 🙏
I bought a hand held electric paint sprayer from screwfix for £15, put acf in the pot, put the pot in hot water for 5 mins and it works a bloody treat!! No need for hoover sized spayers, no offence 👍
I agree, I've had it for years so things have moved on 👍
Used to use ACF 50, now use SDoc100.
Hi, never heard of that , I'll look it up!
Depending on market could be called just S100
Aaaah, the joys of ACF50. Marvellous stuff (not). Necessary I guess, but not Mint flavoured like BSA's own offering 😉
or even better PTFE spray. Lovely stuff that is , but she says "don't wear it on date night" Can't win with em!
I’ve got an LP player. It’s also got a 45 setting. Do I need to use 33 or will 45 be quicker?
It might be best if you leave this job to someone else Graham. Give it 50 years and I think you will be ready for this video. Well done for getting the information superhighway a go though...your doing great!
@@exeterrider I just realised it’s got a 78 setting too.
@@exeterriderif I’m riding at 112 then I certainly will 😂.
I’ll probably be long gone by then.
@@exeterrider can you fax us the information?
@@craigyllyn Telegraph is quicker
I use a brush and paint it on. Neater
👍🍻
good idea , you can warm the stuff up to make the sprayer work , but those bottles are crap , mines broken , and went to lube a lock today , it fell apart again , covered me , the floor , non in the lock , i went mad and if i was at their show stand it would be lobbed at them , rip off ;
Yes they are pretty rubbish. The good thing with this HVLP set up is when its running it blows warm air anyway so no need to warm it up, it does it for you .
I've been using ACF-50 since I first salt flat racing in 2011 and it certainly makes a big difference.
I noticed your a ACF man . Its great stuff... I can't believe how well this video has taken off! Have a good week : )
you did not add that i had to make a account with amazon so i could order ACF 50 as i can not find it anywhere else here in the states. lol then i shipped it to my address from 15 years ago and had to order it again. lol i am coming over this afternoon and i would like to see how it works on a american motorcycle with out an english accent. seriously, i did not know you just leave it on. i keep wiping it off. but i like your way better.
I leave mine on quite thick while I lay the bikes up for a few weeks but then give them a wipe down when it comes to riding again if they are still heavily covered. It's good for them to have a soak I think . Have a good week Blake.
Used to was the BMW during winter every trip. I didn’t use any protection. Even then it ruined them.
So you’re doing us a good service
Protection is important...you can end up in a right mess financially.
@ definitely. I always wear a condom for every ride these days
😂
1:26 condensation! My ADV lives outside, rain, etc
esssh, with a cover on I hope lol!
ah ,,, thats handy to know , maybe include in your video that your sprayer warms the stuff up . as this will improve the job no end ;;
All there at 3:17 mate🙂
@@exeterrider oh, sorry , i must have had a blonde moment ;; ha , ha ,,
No bother mate😂👍
Can you use it on a person for anti-ageing effect? Asking for a friend 🤫😃
My friend said he tried it but said it made things work and his hair started to fallout ,then got a Harley stuck in a field so noI wouldn't if I were you.
I still have my own hair and teeth. But I use Bob Martins and scotch
@@exeterrider did it make him do heavy breathing ? 🤐
Won’t stop you ageing but guaranteed you’ll never rust
Gt85
Good as well
XCP clear coat is excellent & cheaper than ACF50.
ill have to give it a try. Thanks
@kenbrooks7794 😂or tyres
The spray gun was less than £40.00 on the link
👍
Think I’ll stick with spray on a cloth and wipe on, your way leaves the bike very greasy
Only through choice because I'm not using the bikes for weeks now.
Normally I spray them much more lightly than this👍
Being a fair weather rider, ER, I don't use ACF50.
Tut Tut !! Cant believe you didnt cover your foot pegs and grips ..Great product and the good old microfibre cloth is weapon of choice..
🏍️💨
Don't be silly, you must be the odd one out.
Nothing wrong with spraying the pegs and grips within using common sense.
Your not going to get to those hard to reach places with a microfiber cloth are you.
ACF50 bloody awful stuff! Good effort though!😊
Fair enough!👍
Yep spray bottle is sh$$ I use a top fed spray gun and compressor gets into all places 👍
Who sprays it on their paintwork ffs
Most people, you must be the odd one out.
So your not going to spray your swing arm where most rust starts? Crazy
Better with GT 85 comes in spray can
fair enough, Thanks
