Takes a lot of courage to put this out there Glen. I can honestly say that your story helps keep me sober. Only you can decide where you are at and whether controlled drinking works for you or not. I know it would not work for me but that doesn't mean it can't be your path. Thank you for sharing your journey

Probably the only answer is a straight zero tolerance policy. And the knowledge that with one drink comes thousands more. My brother died of alcoholism in June 2017. I don't need any other reasons to avoid alcohol.

Thanks for sharing Glen. I know where you are coming from when you say you've got to start thinking sober. The grog has a habit of re-wiring your drinking-thinking brain when you start back on it. One thing that gets me through is the the detrimental effect that one drink will do to your health. If ever I get a craving, I imagine the drink being a glass of poison (which it is of course) and then downing a pint of water. The craving then goes. Just a mind trick I've learnt, that seems to work.

Hey Glenn--this is exactly what I'm currently doing: a couple of days off, a couple of days on. It's not the optimal solution, but. . . we'll see where it takes me.

One more thing I forgot to say, was thank your lucky stars that you 're not lying in bed all day without any motivation to do anything but drink, look how much you 've turned your life around to exercise and eating healthy most of the time, that in itself is bloody priceless, you 're absolutely too hard on yourself, we 're never ever going to be perfect, and we all try to be the best we can be, ok, so you 've had a few drinks, its not the end of the world, keep on trying, from my experience when the time comes when you 've really done so well for yourself in the say and all you want to do is reward yourself with a drink or crap food, take a drive, go for another walk, the feeling will pass and its just getting use to different routines, then you 'll be so tired all you 'll want to do is go to sleep, lol! Just keep repeating the same thing then it will become your norm! Hard I know, but you 'll wake up in the morning thinking completely different! Good luck

Hi Glenn: we are all in this together. Miss you and your crazy views on The Way Back. We all do stupid things and that is also a part of recovery. I would post this on The Way Back. It may help someone out there that is struggling. Hang in there.

It's very hard to comment or give any advice when one does nt know the whole picture, did you have a health scare in the past? How much and long have you been drinking and how has it affected your life? Do or have you had regular blood tests, etc, have you had any health problems due to drink? What's been the problem? Obviously you 've drunk well beyond the recommended amount, but......? As far as smoking goes, why don't you swap that for e cig? It's a much less dangerous habit, I smoked 30 a day for years, thought no way would I stop, but you just get use to another habit after a while! I can absolutely relate to everything you 've said, I can't tell you how many times I 've been there! The major problem I have to live with now is the affect my drinking had on my 5 kids over the years, I can never turn back the clock, but that's the price you pay for addiction. I did nt mean any harm to anyone, and being a single parent and bringing up 5 kids on your own cos your partner of 20 years dropped dead suddenly, doesn't matter to them, All that matters is that I drank alcohol, and I still do but not purely to relax and not get out of my head! I don't kniw what advice to give cos everyone's story is so different but I just wish you All the strength in the world to be where you want to be, incidently, my kids all turned out lovely people, no drugs no drink and no smoke, I must have had the adverse affect! Amazing lol

Okay, my question is - are you getting any other psychological help? Because here's my experience. I liked a drink. I never considered myself an alcoholic, but there's no denying that I liked a (regular) drink to excess. Cutting a long story short, I suffered a bout of depression - bad enough to see a doctor. I got pills.
Now, given that I'd regularly had a drink for 30 years, something amazing happened. I didn't decide not to drink. I didn't even think about it. I just stopped. Once my head was sorted out, whatever corner of my brain that was wired for booze, was closed off. I haven't had a drink in five years. I don't feel that's any kind of achievement, because it's taken no real effort on my part. In other words, I believe I solved the real problem, and that cleared up all the symptoms - one of which was drinking.
So, I wonder if you've pursued getting medical help?
