Vladimir Vavilov’s Ave Maria Caccini is a haunting and beautiful aria that has been recorded by many singers and instrumentalists. The aria was composed by Vavilov around 1970, but he published and recorded it as an anonymous work. He claimed that he had found the score in a library and that it was written by the 16th-century Italian composer Giulio Caccini. However, this was a hoax, as there is no evidence that Caccini ever wrote such a piece. Vavilov was known for his forgeries of ancient music, and he probably wanted to avoid copyright issues or to gain more popularity.
The aria is written in a Baroque style, with a simple melody and a basso continuo accompaniment. The melody is expressive and cantabile, meaning “singing” in Italian. The lyrics are based on the traditional Catholic prayer “Hail Mary”, which praises the Virgin Mary as the mother of Jesus. The aria has a serene and solemn mood, conveying a sense of devotion and reverence.
The aria became famous worldwide after Vavilov’s death in 1973, when other musicians started to perform and arrange it. One of the first to do so was the organist Mark Shakhin, who attributed the work to Caccini and gave the score to other performers. The organist Oleg Yanchenko then made an arrangement of the aria for a recording by the soprano Irina Arkhipova in 1987. Since then, many versions of the aria have been made for different instruments and voices, such as violin, cello, guitar, flute, trumpet, horn, accordion, choir and more.
Vladimir Vavilov’s Ave Maria Caccini is a remarkable piece of music that has touched many hearts with its beauty and simplicity. It is a testament to Vavilov’s talent as a composer and a mystery as to why he chose to hide his authorship.

I have never heard such a beautiful and exalting chant to the Holy Virgin Mary. But not only the music is so incredibly beautiful, but Nina Solodovnikova's voice and her expression when she sings, my God, she is so marvellous and Nina understands so well what our feelings are towards the Blessed Virgin Mary, Holy mother of God. I guess Nina believes in God and His Mother as otherwise she couldn't sing with all the deep feelings she enjoys to sing this beautiful work by Vavilov. “Ave Maria” Vladimir Vavilov
This popular "Ave Maria" was born illegally, as a hoax. Therefore, here is more information.
Soviet guitarist and lutenist Vladimir Vavilov was a talented self-taught man with a single diploma from a music school. He was engaged in concert activities and made arrangements of various compositions for guitar and lute. And at the same time, he composed his own in the spirit of ancient music.
When it came to publishing a collection of sheet music, and then releasing a record, he came up with the idea of naming his stylizations after composers of the 16th and 17th centuries. At that time, their music was not known to many people, the fashion for the Baroque was just beginning.
In 1970, the famous record with lute music of the 16-17 centuries was released, performed by Vavilov himself (and not only). Its success was simply sensational: such classics our audience has not yet known. Simple and beautiful melodies, actual guitar sound-everyone liked it, not only the regulars of the Philharmonic. The record was reissued several times, such was the fantastic demand for it.
As for the Ave Maria, the cover said, " unknown author of the seventeenth century."
Four years later, it was sung and recorded on a record (“Old arias”) by Irina Bogacheva. There Is “Ave Maria” already had the authorship: Giulio Caccini. According to the singer, it was Vavilov who gave her the sheet music and indicated the author's name.
To the authentic music of Caccini " Ave Maria” Vavilova looks about the same as Isaac Dunaevsky looks like Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, but at that time the ideas about music of the 17th century were quite vague, so no one really thought about how Caccini was 200 years ahead of his time in terms of harmonic language.
But then this hoax was discovered, and the sister of the deceased by that time Vavilov confirmed the facts.
But still " Ave Maria” Vavilova is sung and recorded all over the world under the authorship of Caccini.
Even Cecilia Bartoli, who all her life studies from manuscripts and sings Italian Baroque (including the original Caccini), released a CD with " Ave Maria” Caccini, and not Vavilov. Which, of course, does not mean that she is ignorant, but about the exact marketing calculation.
Please note that the lyrics of this song are limited to the endless repetition of only two words: "ave Maria". Perhaps Vavilov was afraid that the full text of the Catholic prayer would not appeal to the Soviet censors.

It happened in USSR so there were two factors in play:
1) Zero chances of releasing a religious track such as "Ave Maria" written by a Soviet composer. Firstly, it'd be killed by censors and secondly, wouldn't be released by music studios, as all of them been owned by the anti-religious government. Like, really zero chances and huge negative consequences for an author.
2) What would be the chances of having a record of an unknown self-taught guy? Same thing. Close to zero.
Vavilov wanted his creations to be heard more than he wanted to rich and famous so he went for a hoax and we know and love some of his creations, not always knowing who's the author.
One more melody from the record got uber-famous in USSR and later in Russia. "The City of Gold" or "Heaven", or "Over the blue sky".

Anri Volkhonsky, a Soviet poet, wrote a poem on the music from this album, not knowing the author.
It's utterly beautiful and eerily unearthful. Once I heard it in the dark forest played on a guitar and flute and sang with a beautiful woman voice and I was carried sooo far away...
It became famous as a quite popular Russian singer who's been a bit of an underground musician at the time sang it in a cult film "Assa". He changed the words a bit, changing the city from "over the sky" to "below the sky", kinda stating that the promised land and heaven should be here. I don't agree with the idea, but from that moment the song was mostly known in that variant.
The author of the song got the permit to emigrate from the Soviet Union just a year later and left, still not knowing at the moment who was the author of the music.
It's a true story, but if you'd see that kind of story in a movie, you'd think that that's too much, right?
That one guy with just a musical school education writing a piece of music and hoaxing the whole thing till it's released by a chthonic Soviet giant of record releases right under the censorship noses, risking everything in case he'd been busted. Another guy who's one year from leaving his motherland forever writing the poem, longing for his co-author who left Moscow for Leningrad. And the whole thing becomes one of _the_ most known songs in USSR and later in Russia.
