    There seems to be some confusion about the premise of this video. That's on me. Let me clarify. I recently found out Amazon keeps an updated best sellers list of just about every category of products they sell. As luck would have it, BBQ rubs are one of them. Here is that list...
    Top 5 BBQ SEASONINGS (Updated hourly): amzn.to/30eC4My
    Once I saw that list, I had an idea for a video. I thought it would be fun to buy whatever the top selling bbq rubs are and give them a shot and see which one I liked best. To clarify, this isn't MY list. They are simply the top 5 best selling bbq rubs on amazon that are appropriate to use on pork which was my meat of choice for this experiment (since that's what most of my experiments are about.)
    This was just a side-by-side comparison of the top selling rubs on Amazon from their list. The market has spoken (and because of this list, we know what the market likes), I thought it would be fun to compare them. That's as deep as it goes.
    Thanks for watching, guys. I'll try to be more clear in the future.

    The BBQ Rub from killer hogs is the rub for BBQ not the “AP” rub. AP rub is just an “all purpose” salt pepper and garlic mixture. The BBQ Rub from killer hogs is the actual rub and it’s the best one I’ve ever used.

    • @BabyBackManiac
      @BabyBackManiac  5 ปีที่แล้ว +21

      *edited 9/14 to address more common confusion*
      OK. I'm started to understand why there was confusion. Here are some common themes I am hearing in comments.
      1) “Why didn’t I use a different rub by Killer Hogs?” For the same reason I didn’t use a different rub by Special Ship or KosmoQ.
      The premise of this video was to compare the rubs in Amazon’s top 5 best selling barbecue rubs list which is here (updated hourly):amzn.to/30eC4MyThat list is what I worked off of. There are a lot of great rubs I could have included had I just been looking for the 5 best rubs I could find, but again, that was not the point. The point was to used the ones on the Amazon best seller barbecue list.
      Amazon is such a huge retailer that best selling on Amazon may very well translate to some of the best selling in the world so I thought it would be interesting to see if they were any good.
      2)Some of you have questioned whether the KH AP rub was intended for pork. Pork is actually the first protein suggested on the bottle.
      3)Some of you have also questioned whether KH AP rub was meant to be a stand alone rub. Again, the directions clearly state it is designed to stand alone but you can also combine it with others if you want. So It’s designed to be used either way. I personally (like many of you) think it’s optimally used combined with other flavors…
      ...which is exactly what I said and did in this video so I don’t really understand the confusion on this one. My guess is you guys are commenting before the video is over.
      Either way, thank you for leaving the comment because it helped me understand the confusion. I'll try to do a better job of explaining these things in the future.

    • @Homecooking-lq6yv
      @Homecooking-lq6yv 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Baby Back Maniac Yeah I get that, my only thing is I don’t consider the “AP” seasoning a rub like the other ones it was up against. But I was just pointing out that it’s not that brands actually rub but as you stated I’m sure you realize that. Thanks for the video.

      I was just about to leave this same comment, so now I won’t! Instead I’ll just say that I now buy Killer Hog’s “The BBQ Rub” by the five pound bag because we like it on almost everything we smoke. Great vid as always. Scott

    Like so many have said, AP is All Purpose SPG rub. You finally got there with the approach to base later. Malcolm knows his stuff and if you spend some time watching his videos you would see he uses the AP as a base and then covers with his BBQ rub which is an awesome rub. I use it all the time and works great on ribs. Kosmo’s honey rub is another if you like the sweeter flavor and combine with his Hot for a little sweet heat.

  • @shalmanezer4193

  • @evandurkovic6662
    @evandurkovic6662 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You hit the nail on the head with the K.H. AP Rub review. It's definitely a base layer, not intended as a stand-alone rub. Malcom Reed always puts a layer of AP and a layer of something else, usually his The BBQ Rub.

  • @uberquellen
    @uberquellen 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    This is why I make my own rubs. I’m not a big fan of salt so I like to control the level I use. Plus it’s cheaper to make your own.

  • @405BackyardBBQ
    @405BackyardBBQ 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have used the killer hog AP Rub as a base rub many times. It works real well with his killer hog The BBQ Rub. Also Kosmos has a Honey Chipotle Killer Bee Rub that works well on ribs. Great video though I like to see how the different flavor profiles play out at the same time and conditions. Good job.

    Great to see you making videos once again and this one was another fantastic video Justin. I have not tried Killer Hog rubs, so I'll be getting me some of that. I personally didn't care for the Byron Butt rub when I tried it. And yes, I love everything KosmosQ has put out for rubs and sauces. I loved the outtake at the end!!! See ya soon my friend!

  • @DavePruett
    @DavePruett 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You are correct about the AP Rub: Malcolm Reed always uses it as a base rube and then adds one or more other layers on top. I get that you were just using Amazon's best sellers and really enjoyed the video.

    Hey in fairness Mr. Maniac the AP Rub is a pre rub its only for pre seasoning Its Salt Pepper Garlic. Malcom Reed ( killer hogs) has a barbeque rub that is dyno might! Oh I see you discovered that. Thanks for this! Always enjoy comparisons.

  • @David-burrito
    @David-burrito 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    That Lone Star is a beautiful monster! On his channel, How to BBQ Right, Malcom Reed uses his AP rub exactly as you said, as a base. He them goes over it with his The BBQ Rub when he's doing ribs.

    Love the video. Always good to get some honest opinions on store bought rubs. I like that you mentioned the saltiness. That's been my beef (or pork or chicken) with bought rubs. I always feel like I need to do something to them to offset the saltiness. Mostly I just make my own at home. Would love to see a cool video about homemade sauces and rubs. Keep up the good work! Always entertaining.

    Pretty much always make my own rub with brown sugar and spices. But yeah, it's nice to have a pre-made rub when you just don't feel like making one. McCormick's barbecue rub is actually pretty good too for a mass produced rub.

    • @victorbitter583
      @victorbitter583 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, a lil SPG with the McCormicks chipotle and some chili flakes and a lil tarragon with hotted up Buffalo wing sauce on wings makes some killer wings. I'll be doing them tomorrow.

    Really like these comparison videos. I use the AP as a base rub or binder rub. Put it on, let the ribs sweat and then add the next layers. Great for what it is. I have used that cinnamon danish rub as a finishing rub on apple flavored ribs, worked great for that. Usually use it on my breakfast bagels though, LOL. Kosmos is my favorite of the ones you had though. Mix that with the Dirty Bird rub and you got yourself a fantastic blend. Great video, thanks!

    I tried similar experiment, Byrons just made everything taste like polish sausage. I found Kosmos Honey Killer Bee was the best for store bought rub as it has a lil sweetness. I've been trying marinades and rubs to find a perfect blend. I usually do 2-3 racks a week on a Yoder pellet smoker, and test flavors on friends and family. 2 years in Pellets just don't have the flavor profile like a stick burner! Good, bad, mediocre...its all fun!

    Thanks for the comparison! I snagged some wonderful rubs off the clearance rack at meijer. Urban accents red tandoori(its amazing on everything),the American 6 fire and seafood rubs, a Cajun life seafood and mesquite rubs, modern mill sweet & spicy rub, spicology Mediterranean rub, and some other things I’m not digging through the pantry to find. Walked out spending 30 dollars on 100 dollars of spices. The clearance rack is a gold mine.

  • @chads7796

    FYI for jerk rub/paste try Eaton's (available on Amazon). It is way better then Walker's Wood, has more well rounded flavor, tastes fresher, and has a bit more sweetness (while still being spicy). Walker's wood is what is sold to American's as it is more commercial...Eaton's is what us Jamaicans use (when making from scratch; I use the Eaton's Hot actually).
    Also, try using the jerk and after marinating put on a rub (brown sugar, smoked paprika, and some SPG) before the cook. It will add a bit more BBQ depth to all that jerk flavor and help create a better bark. Then, glaze with bbq sauce spiked with pepper jelly and/or mango or pineapple juice.

Grills rub up and down each other all the time in the dark. Not my fault they multiply when no one is looking.

    Your editing is great Justin and awesome comparison video on the rubs. That would be great if you did some more videos like these but into different categories like top 5 Brisket,Rib,Chicken etc... Victory lane, Meat church, Suckle busters, kosmo q, heaven made products, and many more. Just comparing the rubs and what stands out to you as the best !!!

    Mr. Maniac, first off, glad your back! Great vid.😁 now I think you may be costing me more money. Weber Summit Charcoal, check. Your review of it pushed me to purchase one. Don’t worry I waited a year. Great results with it by the way.
    been thinking about moving on to a stick burner. Please give a review of that beautiful smoker. Because we all need more than one way to BBQ/ Smoke our meat. Take care Jason😂. Sorry I just like that story.

    The best all around rib & pork rub is Mudflap rub made in Speedway, Indiana. I have tried at least 30 different rubs from all over the US and Mudflap is the best by far.

  • @ELRORRITO1

    Exactly... Malcolm's AP rub is that All Purpose Seasoning. You apply AP first followed by the BBQ rub from Killer Hogs. Malcolm's rub is the best.

    Great video Justin your right the Killer Hogs AP rub is a base layer, their BBQ rub is awesome with it. Now if you use the Killer Hogs AP rub on hamburgers by itself they are amazing. Keep up the great work. Love your videos

    For a really nice change of pace try Tajin seasoning with fresh ground black pepper. Its from Mexico and can be found at most Walmarts. Do 3-2-1 method sprinkle with brown sugar before wrapping and put in no juice. People freak on these. Kind of a drunken experiment one day that just turned out amazing.

    Hey Justin, as always enjoy your videos.. good ship. Realize this review was based on Amazons best sellers.. but Killer Hogs also has a BBQ rub that I think you'd really enjoy on ribs. It's flavor profile and coloring is more in line with the other seasonings use.
    Thanks for the informative and funny videos!!

  • @martyvanord984

    Would be nice to see the best for grilling chicken. I know that a lot of people complain about Bad Byron's for being too salty but I like that it can go to 400 and not burn.It is also affordable at $16 for 26 ounces. This as compared to $26 for 12 ounces for The BBQ Rub from Killer Hogs on Amazon. It drops to .69 cents a pound if you spent $56 for 5 pounds on Amazon. I would love to try The BBQ Rub but not at this price.

    I have the Kosmos Cow cover but have not tried it on pork. Only used it on steaks so far. When applied as Kosmos does it in his videos it is too salty. May have to try it on rubs though.

    Killer Hogs "The Rub" is the one you want. The AP rub is just a base or good for flavoring food Kosmos Dirty Bird is great on pork, and beef as well. Butt rub is like a good ole standby.
