      @@GearGasms I tried today to run just analog pedals on both gain channels. There is just too much noise. I would love to use the Marshall amp tone, but it's a no go even with a Boss noise gate. I've had great success with a digitech RP200 which I'm discovering is a staple in my sound. I've been using them since the early 2000s since they came out. Awesome pedal by the way. That's my conclusion and it sounds awesome 🤘

      @@GearGasms also in addition to the RP200, I'm running either a TS9 or mini 808 both tube screamers, an MXR classic distortion, Behringer Vintage tube screamer like pedal, MXR 10 band eq for a mid boost, Boss noise gate, and a cheap caline TS9/ts808 combo which is the Death overdrive. The Boss sd-1 sounds good but I ran out of room and it had to go🤣.

    The majority of great marshall metal tones that you've heard in your life are boosted with an od. It's fairly common with any high gain amp even if it doesn't fart like a dsl.
    The "common" boost setting is gain at zero or very low, volume maxed and tone to taste. Tubescreamers work great for that but with marshalls, my favorite is the boss sd-1. A boosted dsl on lead 1 with the amp gain around 6-8 is an awesome high gain tone! Keep on rocking!

    Green ultra gain channel on about 6 with an OD boost in the front works pretty good for me. I added an EQ pedal in the loop and a BBE mini sonic stomp pedal at the end of my pedal chain and the amp sounded great IMO. I don't use the red ultra gain channel at all. Like you said it's fizzy and unusable after about 5 on the gain knob. But I was like you, I bought the amp and figured it would sound awesome just plugging into the front with a guitar and no pedals.

    I'd love to hear another comparison on sounds if you tightened up the bottom end by dropping the bass a bit, or by cranking the tone a bit more on your boost pedal as it all sounded a bit muddy to me. You'd get a much tighter and driven sound. I've got a TC Spark that I use as a booster through a friend's DSL100 and it sounds blisteringly good.

      An SD1 will fix that right up . Any DSL should automatically come with an SD1 . One of the cheapest ODs you can get and the ultra gain or modern sounding channels really love the DS1 it cuts a lot of the mud out of the low end. Something like an OCD takes the classic gain channel to almost modded 800 tones, you can get some plexi vibes from the classic gain and some boost , for the money the DSL range is hard to beat if you want the Marshall sounds but like most amps they need some help. SD1 into Marshalls just work , check out Euge’d channel his main boost is a SD1 it’s cheap and most people looking at DS1 probably don’t have the budget for a JVM so that 40 dollar yellow box is the trick.

    With large high gain tube amps,ya gotta dial in a decent tone and then turn it up loud and then back off gain if needed to compensate from tubes getting hot and adding their own gain,warmth and compression. Dial in from there. But,yeah...for lower volumes in your bedroom or for recording...you gotta fix it.

  • @xtravyx1
    @xtravyx1 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    There aren’t many pros that use any amp without a little boost to tighten up the low end and boost the mids. Also many amateur players expect to start with the volume down and the gain way up. Wrong. Too much gain on any amp leads to overly compressed mushy tone. Use your presence, back out the bass and increase the mids and highs. And back off the gain…… also the volume sweet spot on most high gain amps is at least 5. Or an attenuator. If you listen to your favorite guitar songs, you’ll find that they don’t actually have the gain that high, are mostly using the amps gain with an sd1 with the gain on the sd1 on about 2.

    I played bass in a band with two guitarists using UK JCM 2000 Marshall DSL's. Those amps had some issues and were in the shop for repairs a lot because the circuit boards became conductive with age and heat and the tubes would have a runaway bias issue that ruined power tubes and trandsformers or something. Anyhow one guys amp was louder than the others for whatever reason. He would set his volume at 4 or 5 and the other guy set his volume to 6 or 7. They sounded like fire breathing demons. When they were at bedroom level they sounded thin, scooped, and fizzy bees in a can.

    Oh another thing, this amp is not high gain. They tried to make it , but the gain is really useless at some point. It is only a a bit more gainy then a jcm800. Accept this will help a lot. Use the od1 only, keep gain maximum at 1 o clock and use boosts for more gain (with a bit of bass cut if possible, like a TS or od-1). Use resonance wisely. You will get a really good and defined tone, but it will not be ultra metal gain at all.

You would know to put the right guitar, the right pickups, and the right player, and it all works. Now, I do have 3 large pedalboards, from pedaltrain, loaded, and I can enhance, and perfect the tone to perfection. I love all of my Marshall's, Orange, Peavey, and Fender monsters I have at my disposal. I have a JCM800, a JCM900 and a DSL100H. Yes it's a fizz monster, no idea why they'd design it to sound that way. Unless having it sound like a glorious 1980's modded JCM800 roar would cut into the profits of the $3000 JCM800 reissues. The JCM900 isn't an 800 but it's closer, and if you use a tube screamer into the front end and an eq (and a gate is good too) in the loop it gets a heck of a lot closer, especially working the power stage hard. DSL100 is hopeless un less you get ALL the distortion from a really good pedal (Angry Charlie, etc.) and just use it as a clean tube power amp (but even the JCM800 used as a clean pedal platform has more mojo).

  • @Kothas01
    @Kothas01 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    My experiences with Marshall heads..... 2 o'clock on my jcm 800 was max volume without farting. As you turn the gain up you hit a little node it compresses. Set gain just before that spot. Now on that amp each section of gain stage (I believe its like 3 different levels) you have to set one to that spot with reference to where you have that bass shift set. I am rarely in ultra. I use a pedal to take me to that point (its probably like 10 more db gain without hunting a schematic. ) I don't have that head but I believe it to be similar to DSL 40. Remember 50 watts to 100 watts is about 6db. Not so big of a level jump as it is giving you more girth. I had a 9200 in my rack that shook the earth with a clean G chord.

    • @GearGasms

    The only high gain fix for this amp is to lower the living shite out of the pickups. Or a boost that cuts the low end. Lower until the low e palm mute chunk fart disappears. The thing about this amps its like the only amp you have to do this with. Virtually no other amp ive had was this sensitive to humbuckers. They just over power the front end of this amp too much. Unless youre going for that borderline fuzz thing. You can hear the amps on some Zeppelin songs break up the same way.

      Pre-amp V1 tube swap. Easy 20$ for a JJ ECC823 from Eurotubes and it knocks the gain off the Ultra side only, making it way more tuneable/usable. The right speaker combo really tightens the bass too. This is the way.

      @@GearGasms Creamback/Greenbacks are great if not instrumental as the amp is a bit modern and scooped depending on speakers. They fix that and they tighten up the bass you are dealing with so it's not sloppy anymore. There's some magic in this combo setup.
      As for settings, this is what you want for Classic rock stuff.
      Treble 6, Mids 7, Bass 1, Presence 5, Resonance 0....Classic Crunch Channel at Gain of 3, OD1 Gain at 4 or 5 depending on your guitar. If you want to play some Metal...keep the settings the same but roll the bass to 8 and click in the Tone Shift (assuming speaker fix is in)...then go to OD2 on gain 6-ish. It'll hit hard but be tighter and more responsive.
      The next fix for the "dimed gain" is you replace your V1 Pre-amp tube with a 20$ ECC823 tube from JJ (Eurotubes). It'll knock down the sloppy gain on the Ultra Gain side, but leave the Classic Gain side un-touched (it's a special tube only JJ makes). That, plus the Creambacks and your settings fix...will make this thing kickass. And be super, super versatile. Works for the DSL40CR too.

    The EQ on this amp actually works, that's a first for Marshalls, use it.
    If raising the gain sags the sound, your volume is too low.
    Every volume and gain setting must be EQ'd, what is working at bedroom levels won't work at practice levels and that won't work for performance volume, there's no magic all around setting, this is an analog circuit not digital.
    The only issue to fix is precisely the need for unbearable volumes, that's universal for overpowered amps. 20w is the way to go for 21th century and even so, it's too much.
    You can, in order of importance:
    Use a treble booster
    Parametric EQ
    Boost the signal with an overdrive
    Use a resistance unit / power soak / attenuator whatever you call them. They're not absurdly expensive as they used to, I advice against them nonetheless, they defeat entirely the purpose of a highly powered amp and put the full stress on them making it a total waste of very expensive parts like tubes and transformers just to play without waking granny up.
    And last, using a distortion pedal.
    Switching between distortion pedals to fix an issue is running circles.

    I have a DSL100HR head 2X12 Marshall Cabinet. I have to say, use a boost pedal and an EQ pedal. Also, kicking in a compressor pedal is a great trick. Really smooths out those leads. Run them through the effect loop. First the compressor, Boost pedal. Caline Boost pedal works great for this head, EQ pedal like the BOSS GE-7 I have. I have many other pedals as well in my effects like my Delay pedals and Reverb HOF II pedal. I also run a Moore 012 preamp pedal, and a looper. But the first 4 will do you well. Then I run a Chorus and Phase 90 Script pedal in the front. It rocks!
