Nigeria's illegal oil refineries (2010)

  • Across delta swamps, oil thieves refine billions of dollars of stolen oil in makeshift operations resulting in frequent oil spills.
Nigerian airlines suspend plans to ground local flights over cost of jet fuel
Nigerian airlines have suspended plans to ground all local flights due to the soaring cost of jet fuel just hours before the move was due to take effect, the airline operators association said on Sunday.
The Airline Operators of Nigeria has been under pressure from the government, consumer protection bodies and customers to shelve the planned shut down since it was announced on Friday.
Airlines are complaining about paying for jet fuel upfront in cash at 700 naira ($1.69) per liter, a price that has more than doubled this year, partly as a result of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, increasing their operating costs by around 95%.
Dollar shortages in Nigeria and a weaker local currency have worsened the woes for the sector, which also faces the country-wide challenges stemming from double-digit inflation, slow growth and mounting unemployment and insecurity.

The USA and other countries who export oil , should give back to NIGERIA somehow.
      1. Pay for oil spill clean up and revegetation of areas affected. Just like they do here in USA after any type of spill or in the ocean.
      2. A Fund directed for clean water headed by a trustworthy group.
      3. Electric for the people in remote areas. Many taxi out to charge their gadgets or flashlights etc.
      4. Teach people how to grow community gardens and become self sufficient.
I have been to Nigeria and in the villages. Lack of employment is high due to not having any type of industrial plants. Other countries have been TAKING EVERYTHING THEY CAN from the Nigerian region and from the African People in all of this continent. Destroying such a beautiful country’s scenery, creatures, habitats… etc.
When will the TAKERS give the NIGERIAN/AFRICAN PEOPLE something in return!!! They are hungry for work, their families are hungry for food. Why should they beg for things that should be paid for by the people who are depleting all of their resources for hundreds of years.

Not at all, Nigerians don't give a shit about investment in technology, they are like Nigerian technology is not dependable, even those who graduate from universites, they have to either pretend to be of foreign origin in order to gain acceptance, so the chances of GOVERNMENT asking these people to TEACH, naaa the philosophy here is far too primitive to even reason in that direction and I mean even educated people who have even acquired PhD. For Nigerians, if it's a Nigerian and it's not Entertainment then it's bullshit, they're like "This stuff is not durable because a Nigerian made it" coming from a fellow Nigerian too. It's pathetic though, much reason so many Nigerians travel out.

Nigeria is indeed a paradox of poverty amidst plenty. We are richly blessed with crude oil but our government and wealthy citizens have failed to invest in the oil refining business within the country.
We export crude oil at a fixed rate and import the components at a flexible rate thereby reducing the value of our currency and making refined products difficult to buy.
Instead of educating youths who are refining within the country and building capacity to refine our crude oil, the government prefer to have them arrested and tag them as criminals while they deliberately ensure our refineries don't work just so they can import refined components into the country and make proceeds at the expense of it's citizens.
