Glad you are still doing the thing! I follow only a few wine experts, largely do to the overt sense of wine-elitism and lack of personality from too many that make me feel there is some "us versus them" in the wine community. You have your own unique personality that makes me want to know what you have to say , providing information that projects that you do not judge consumers' tastes, knowledge level, or financial status. Your approach epitomizes the adage "you like what you like", but also- "I want to provide information so that you can find more wine to explore and more information to further increase your appreciation for the art of wine making." Many thanks.

Happy Holidays Matthew. I'm in Budapest for the holidays and we enjoyed a few glasses of the vesztergombi Bikaver you tasted at the end. Funny you mentioned that Bikaver reminds you of Chianti classico! I told my wife that I was given this blind I'd probably call it a Chianti Rufina!

Great video! I have enjoyed your wine journey for a couple of years now, and even your down moments have been educational. I'm so glad to hear that your fan base is growing - I hope it will continue so you will keep your channel going. As far as how my wine year has gone, I've had a challenging year and have forgotten most of the wines I've tried, but Margaret River cabs stand out, as well as Tannat blends from Uruguay and Madiran. For reliably good stuff when I don't feel up to exploring, I usually fall back on the Southern Rhone. GSM blends seem to hit the sweet spot for me.

Great video Matt. I can't believe you almost gave up because this year has been a great year for you and some of my other favourites such as Konstantin, John and Agnes. TH-cam wine channels used to really low key and disconnected without a sense of community but in the past few years that's changed thanks to you guys. There's no doubt that your personal styles of delivery have helped in the transition from dry, stuffy reviews to enjoyable channel content.
Some wonderful and interesting wines on your list and long may that variety continue. My own wine epiphany this year has been my born again appreciation of great quality low intervention wine, especially white wine from Spain. Happy Christmas Matt. 🍷

Btw too many to list but my top 5 wines of 2023:
    1. Saffredi 2019 - incredible nose and lively tuscan fruits n texture
    2. Bargylus rouge 2013 - incredible quality from a war torn syria im from SG so this blew my mind
    3. Klein Constantia Vin De Constance 2018 - Epic sweet wine period. Could not stop drinking, goes with anything or simply by itself best
    4. Produttori Barbaresco 2018 - Amazing quality from a co-op and unbeatable value
    5. Cap Royal Bordeaux Superieur 2019 - Proof that very affordable wines (sgd $24) can be very well made as well
    Cheers!!

Great year of tasting! This year my favourite new wines were: Paleo 2019, Salwey Kirchberg Weißburgunder GG 2021, Chryseia 2019, Donjon Cheateuaneuf 2019 and Tondonia Reserva 2011 in that order. There were others that were great too but sticking to no more than one per country to hit just the most impressive wines that´s probably my list. Here´s to more brilliant drinking in 2024 especially with 2019 Brunello on the way...

I'm with you about trying wines from lessor known regions. I just tried a Xinomavro from Alpha Estates in Greece. It was a 2014 I found on the shelf at my local liquor store. It was absolutely beautiful and elegant. I put it up there as my favorite wine of the year. At $30 CAD it's a steal! Happy Holidays.

I am so glad that you didn't give up Matthew. It shows that when we keep going even when things look bleak, eventually we will achieve a breakthrough. In a earlier video I listed my favorite wines of the year. But briefly Italy, Hungary, Germany, Austria, and Georgia stand out. Being in Hungary I agree with you that Hungarian wines are underappreciated, good news for wine geeks without very deep pockets.🤣. Yes, young dry Furmints from Tokaj aged in oak don't show well in their youth, but after 5--6 years in bottle they come into their own. We had the Arvay Tokaji Single Vineyard Selection Furmint 2018 this year and it really sang. The fruit and tertiary elements were very well integrated.
They are often more approachable when blended with Harslevelu, which brings a floral and fruity element to Furmint. Yes, Villany wines are the fullest bodied wines in Hungary, with Eger reds being lighter or more savory. Szekszard reds are an in between point between the two; I haven't tried Vestergombi yet. But so far my favorite Szekszardi producer is Pal Meszaros and Eszterbauer make some good ones too. Interesting to hear you talk about Serbian wines and the 2023 Wine Vision Open Balkan, as I am reading about it in my Decanter November 2023 supplement.

Ive got some catena Zapata Adrianna River 2019 in my stash but not popped any yet. Thinking i may drink one over the Christmas period. Wine of the year for me this year was a domaine confurion les suchot. Les suchot is probably my favourite patch in burgundy (that i can afford that is.) Vilafonte series C was pretty good for a Bordeaux blend. Also had some gerd stepp sandstein Spatsburgunder which was really punching above its weight. I had a chateau Margaux 1995 in October which was obviously great but not a wine of the year contender great. Still always appreciate the rare chance to drink first growth Bordeaux!

      The story gets better.
My friend from work brought it in and we tried it after shift and all had loads of fun and really enjoyed it.
Six months later she asked what my favourite wine was and I said that usual thing of “oh well, you know” and then confessed that my favourite was probably the Riesling because it was so fun.
It turns out that is what she had wrapped up for my birthday present! 🥰

Great video my friend, today we have a blind taste and i try tomas postigo 3er year 2021 (was impresive if you come you need to try or 2018, 2019, 2021) Don Tomas know how to do wine (don't buy 2020 was a dissapointment compared to the other years). I try Hacienda Monasterio reserva 2017, Viña ardanza 2009, Ramon Bilbao gran reserva 2011, Paco Mulero 20 meses 2021, El linze 2021. Tomas Postigo was the winer today, next El Linze 2021 and Paco Mulero 20 meses 2021. All the wine was very good top quality. (P.D: when finish we buy 2 bottles each of Ramon Bilbao Gran Reserva 2011 because for a Gran Reserva this wine was pretty young purple and whit tannins and alredy is top but in a few years omg...and 20€ bottle)
