  • We own a fleet of vintage red London buses, each one the iconic AEC Routemaster London bus. Built in the 1960's they all need constant attention, so if you want to find out what it takes to keep a London bus on the road then make sure you check out our maintenance videos...
    In this episode the Routemaster 4 Hire team find the window rubbers are leaking and they get a bus ready for some TV work!
    Here is the seventh in a series of videos following the restoration and repair of an AEC Routemaster London double decker bus. RM1214 is the latest AEC Routemaster to join the Routemaster4Hire fleet, but before she can carry passengers again we need to undertake some long overdue work on this iconic double-decker bus.
    Please subscribe to our channel @Routemaster 4 Hire to follow our progress as we get this 58 year old bus fit to carry passengers again.
    Also don't forget to check out our other videos of AEC Routemaster RM1214's restoration on this playlist...

    Website: www.routemaster4hire.co.uk
    Based in Wrexham, North Wales and Serving Cheshire, the North West, North Wales and North Shropshire we are an independent family run business; we are proud to have the privilege of owning one of London’s most recognisable sights - the iconic London Routemaster Double Decker Bus!
    Our beautifully restored red London double-decker buses are available for Weddings and Special Events, they add some nostalgic novelty and a touch of class to any occasion.

    All our buses are the iconic Routemaster London Double-Decker bus; each vehicle has been beautifully restored back to the original 1960's condition. With immaculate paint and bodywork, they are real head-turners. Inside they are equally pleasing with comfortable re-upholstered seats and authentic 1960s colour scheme; the interior paintwork is complemented by varnished wooden floors and tungsten lighting which create a warm homely glow inside the bus.

    Hi David, Just enjoyed watching episode 7. I would recommend leaving the adverts on if the film company has no further need for them. It adds additional character to the bus.

  • @rarerufus8864

    Certainly keep the side adverts ... but I must pick you up on the destination blinds ... I do not recall ever seeing 'VICTORIA STN' on a Routemaster and I think you will find that if your film makers wish to remain authentic they ought to revert to 'VICTORIA'. Just a thought but worth researching I think.

      @@theflyingfool By the same token, why don't we all flog off the spaces for ads on our cars, then? It could be done, easily. Wrap our cars in ads for Nike trainers, or airlines, like black cabs do. We don't because it looks tacky, and identifies us as money-grubbers. Same with bus operators. Are they such, or do they take a pride in their function, to serve the public?

    • @theflyingfool
      @theflyingfool 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@allenwilliams1306 I think you're missing the point here. This is an example of something a bus operator did. It's got nothing to do with Joe Public & his car. It was, & still is, a way for a business to have more than one income stream, nothing more & nothing less. If a business chooses to do it then the fact that you don't like it is completely irrelevant.

    • @allenwilliams1306
      @allenwilliams1306 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@theflyingfool I am talking about the aesthetics of advertising in and on vehicles in general. In that, my opinion is as valid as anybody else's, and I don't like it. Any owner of vehicles, private, revenue-earning or preserved, has every right to disagree with me, and to do whatever the hell they want with their vehicles. All I am saying is that if they have pride in the appearance of those vehicles, per se, they will not besmirch them with advertisements, which are invariably a detriment in this respect.

    In the matter of the smell: The 409 was one of my local routes to school, and in early October 1965 it got brand new RMLs to replace the RTs. So I was a very early rider of those buses. The smell was horrendous! Acrid and pungent it took literally months to dissipate to an inoffensive level. My guess is that this was not just the Rexine, but the adhesive that was used as well. I can still remember that smell, and it was not pleasant. Free glue-sniffing on trips to and from school, anybody?

    • @Routemaster4Hire
      @Routemaster4Hire  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Allen, where did you catch the 409? I used to occasionally catch the 409 to School. I went to Purly High School for Boys in Old Couldson.

    • @allenwilliams1306
      @allenwilliams1306 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Routemaster4Hire I lived in Coulsdon in The Grove 1955-68 and in Starrock Road 1968-71. I went to Whitgift School 1963-70, so I was travelling the other way to you to school. To 1968 I could either get the bus at the bottom of The Avenue, or the bottom of The Drive. The Avenue was a shorter walk, but The Drive offered the 409 and 411 which The Avenue option did not. I remember the Routemasters for the 409/10/11 being delivered because from the back windows at home you could see, across the valley, buses ascending Coulsdon Road up to Old Coulsdon. I spotted one red Routemaster and though it odd, but dismissed it as a trial run or something, but then another one, green this time, and another one a bit later. This went on all afternoon, on and off, so it became obvious what was going on.
      I was going to ask you why you have 190 blinds for your Routemasters, even though the main subject of your video couldn't have been allocated to the route. Also why one has a 190 offside blind, although offside blinds had been discontinued long before RMs appeared on the 190. I had my suspicions, but you have now confirmed them. 190 was also my favourite Central Area route, though favourite route overall was 414.
      Incidentally, I have ridden on the star of your show, when it was in Halifax in Tony Blackman's fleet. I thought Tony must have had his hands on it when you revealed it had the big engine in it. The whole Blackman family and their friends had a penchant for putting these in any AEC in which they would fit.
      Best Wishes

      What a small world! I grew up in Howard Road, we moved there when I was 5 in 1971 and my parents lived there until 1995 when they moved to Kingswood.
      I have the 190 blinds in all my buses as it was the route I took to School and back everyday, plus after leaving School I took the same route (albeit in the opposite direction) to Croydon - my first job was in a Jewellers shop in the Whitgift Centre. Although I did have a choice of routes travelling from Coulsdon to Croydon (166, 409, 411) my preference was the 190 as it was the only route still operating Routemasters.
      My first Routemaster RM765 was based at South Croydon garage at the time when I was travelling on the 190 to School, so there is every chance I travelled on that bus as a teenager. I have since had the 190 blinds reproduced for all my Routemasters even though as you say RM1214 would have never served that route.
      David

      @allenwilliams1306 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Routemaster4Hire Ah, yes, Howard Road is at the top of the alleyway leading from The Grove to Woodcote Grove Road. I remember taking a photo of a Routemaster on the 190 when they were first introduced (on Saturdays only), but 1971 was my last year in Coulsdon before moving north, so, to me, the 190 is associated with the RT, though I did go back to see how the Southend PD3s coped (quite well, I thought). The 166 was replaced by SMSs. Everybody hated them, and there was a large public campaign to have them replaced by RTs again. While this was not successful, LT did take them away, and put on DMSs instead. Not popular, but at least the burghers of Coulsdon could get a seat. The SMSs were called “cattle trucks”. Prior to the DMSs, people in Coulsdon would shun them, and wait for a 190, 405, or 414.

    Love following these videos, you're doing a great job. Definitely favour keeping the advertisements. If the film crew are basing this in 1962, the blinds are not right. As someone else says, the destination should read VICTORIA, and the via points are incorrect. In any case, I don't recall ever seeing an RM on the 38's as early as 1962. Ah well!

Upstairs the previous lighting holes were covered over with a plate, but down stairs we cannot work out where the original lighting went. We will have to drill new holes for the lighting. Approx where in the panels downstairs are the bulbs located?

      Hi Chris, they will be located in the middle of each coving section in the lower salon. If not let me know as I can give you details of a company that had some made.
