Malign the next generation all you want but tsitsipas, Medvedev, and zverev are a thousand times better than Roddick and Ljubicic. I think his talent was always undeniable but you knew watching him at the time he was never tested mentally during his prime the way Pete, Andre, Becker, Edberg were. Then when competition came he was revealed to not be that great.
But he played with far worse opponents then now. If both Rafa and Novak were his age, he would not have as many GS titles. If he does not have to hit a perfect ball that falls on the line to win a point, he can be more cavalier with the point and try something that otherwise would not have won him a point against Rafa or Novak.

The change in court speeds starting in ‘08/‘09 really helped the grinder/defensive players like Novak. Watching Fed in ‘04 courts it looks so much different. Props to Fed for thriving in both eras. If the courts weren’t slowed down Fed probably have 25+ Grandslams. It looks like now the ATP/each event is speeding up the courts a bit.

That’s the only reason why Djokovic won it because that “slow speed” of rallies gave him such an upper edge and “technically” an unfair advantage. Fast courts can also benefit counterpunchers/defensive players like Djokovic as well, but slow courts will never be beneficial at all for aggressive/attacking players like Federer. Would’ve been a different outcome had Wimbledon grass remained fast like how it’s supposed to be. These tournament organizers are a disgrace to the traditions of Wimbledon...
I think they started slowing courts down I. The early 2000s because serve and volley makes for shit TV. But they really started slowing them down near 2009 because having Fed win everything other than the French also made shit TV.
I'm a Rafa fan but when Fed's detractors - many of them Novak fans - call him the "Weak Era Champ" it's utterly laughable. You don't win 20 GS along with boatloads of other historical achievements without being one of the GOATs, and there was a reason Prime Fed demolished most of his competition: he was insanely good. (Still is damn good despite being 40!)

As a guy who grew up watching Federer's magic, i can tell. This guy was during 237 weeks n1, insane record! He fucking did 10 grand slams finals in a row from Wimbledon 2005 to US Open 2007. He did 5 or 6 times more than 25 consecutive wins in all surfaces. From august 2006 till march 2007 he won 41 consecutives matches. Literally from Wimbledon 2005 till Australian Open 2008, he just lost to Rafa in the Roland Garros in grand slam finals, he just lost 2 times in grand slam for 2 years and half ! Just to remember the people, Fed at that time did something crazy that none of the specialists or journalists just point : 3 three- quarters slams in 4 years, damn it ! This will never happen again. Nadal did it in 2010, Djokovic in 2011, 2015, and 2021, but Fed did it in 4 years, extraordinary accomplishment. I would say that Rafa is probably a better player mentally, and Djokovic is more all- round better player, but the technique of Rodger was unbeatable in that time, i would suggest that his elegance and timing is probably the best of all time. During 2004- 2008 reign, he was just a monster. He was so good that he didn't even compete with one other guy of his generation, so he had to play at the highest level with guys who were already 4-5 years younger than him (Djokovic- Nadal- Murray- Wawrinka- Ferrer- Tsonga), even 10 years younger (Nishikori- Raonic- Zverev- Dimitrov- etc). What he did from 2004 to 2008 was 4 years of pure genius, even though i love Djokovic and Nadal.
Yeah, Roger was ahead of time in that period, he started playing new era tennis before anyone else... He invented it but Nadal and Novak mastered it and brought to another level. Anyway, all 3 of them, together made best era of tennis ever.
For those who didn't see him in his prime, the fact he lost (because of his mistake not because his oponent played better) 2019 wimbledon at 39 years of age against a much younger Djoko shows what a beast he was.

Why I think Fed is the GOAT is that he had to play in both Era's. Fast hard / grass courts and slow hard / grass courts. He was successful at both speeds. Truthfully Djoker and Nadal are not from same generation as Fed in tennis years. Rog had to adjust style of play and adapt to racket technology more than the other two. I just don't see Nole or Rafa putting up a fight against Rog on those old US open fast hard courts. Also 37 year old Fed pushing Joker to the limit in Wimby final 2019.....Cmon. enough said.

So djokovic could do the same thing like Nadal did , attack his backhand. He would rely more on slice then and that would be problematic against djokovic
I am so glad that I got to witness Fed in his prime. He was an absolute monster from 04-07, pretty much untouchable outside of clay. He has, in my opinion, the greatest offensive game ever. And while he doesn't get recognized for it, his defensive game was just as good.

He had the likes of Hewitt, Safin, Nalbandian, Ferrero, Roddick, and Agassi was still playing at a high level during a couple of Fed's prime years. Let's not forget that Djoker, Rafa, and Sir Andy are years younger than Roger. I would take 2005 Roger over anyone in the history of the sport. However, I would love to see that version of Roger against 2016 Novak. That would be an epic clash.

Sampras, Becker, Edberg, and Krajicek would be getting passed and hitting volleys from their shoes all day long. It's just a different game now. If you were to take Federer, at his peak, and put him into the Sampras, Becker, Edberg era, I have no doubt Federer would have rained supreme. I also think Djokovic could have played with those guys and dominated. Sampras' backhand would not hold up against Federer, and it certainly wouldn't hold up against Novak. And both guys return too good, so I think Pete's serve would have been nullified just a bit. Now if he plays both guys on 90s era grass, I think he may could get some wins, but he wouldn't consistently beat them.
The first tennis match I saw was the us open final 2003, after that I became a Roddick fan. I was so pissed that Federer always won against him in every slam after that lol
I have simply never seen anyone play tennis like Federer; there’s simply no one else like him! Absolutely mind boggling to see the extreme angles and precision placement of the ball many times from what appears to originate from a sort of “flippy” quick racquet swing! It’s just amazing to see! This man has brought me and millions of others utter astonishment and joy for all of the reasons mentioned below. If one could count every completely improvisational, once and only once, shot he has invented as a separate ‘type’ of shot, combined with the more ‘standard’ shots (like a perfectly placed blind backhand overhead smash ; ) in his repertoire, I wonder how many it would add up to. The number would be very, very large, and, I believe it would dwarf that of any other player ever to hold a racket. I admit that this is an overly analytical way of contemplating what he brought to tennis, and for that matter sports more generally: sheer, unequaled genius.
Federer is the definition of tennis. His all court play is way better than Djokovic and Nadal baseline play. Roger mastered all shots and strokes unlike Djokovic and Nadal.

People need to remember Federer's game was moulded for fast courts, not these slow courts we see these days. Prime Fed on a fast court was unstoppable, almost to the level of Nadal on clay.
Curious to hear why the tournaments would be killing their golden goose? And, if this was correct, then you would expect him to be losing to grinders, right? Wrong! At Wimbledon (other than to Nadal, who is a bad matchup and to Nole, who is simply better) he's lost to Tsonga, Raonic, Berdych, Anderson, and those players are total opposite of what you call a grinder. If the surface had been faster, you would probably add Roddick and maybe someone else like Isner to that group. Yes, it's true that there is no indoor carpet, yes, it's true that Wimbledon is slower than it used to be, but everything else is ranges from a bit slower to a bit faster, and everything is suited to Roger's and Nadal's taste. Theirs, and no one else's.
This is definitely a factor in the progression of the sport. Granted racquet technology had a huge impact on the modern game, but the ATP made a concentrated effort around the middle of Fed's prime to slow the courts. On one hand, they kind of had to cause the 90's saw matches such as Sampras-Ivanisevic where they just blasted 130mph unreturnable serves at each other with 3-4 shot rallies max and it wasn't good for the game. Fed came on the scene as a SnV'er and won his first couple Wimbledon's using that style. Nadal's emergence in 06 forced him to diversify his game which led to some truly historic matches. As for the speed of the court, Fed's best tournament by far was Cincinatti, which was the fastest surface in the game today. Not to mention all those indoor carpet tournaments he was unstoppable at.
Yup, I remember back in the day around 02-03 thinking American tennis was in good hands. Agassi still kicking but more important to the future Roddick had burst on the scene and literally dominated everyone he played. Then there was Blake, hyper talented player with the sky being his limit if he could put it all together, mainly consistency and confidence. Then Federer showed up and just destroyed their careers and ended US tennis, which has been a joke ever since. And plenty of other potential greats just became hurdles in Fed's story too - he literally kept an entire generation down. This guy was scary good in his peak. Like, probably a level never seen before and not reached even by Djokovic. Djoker is obviously the 🐐 by now, but thats in large part because his peak has, absurdly, continued into its 11th year by now. No one is saying Djoker is not the best in terms of records (he is) but it is more of a discussion on how good Fed was in his Prime that others looked really mediocre and couldn't win much.

I'd say Roger's prime was 03-10. He had an off year in 08, and he still reached 3 GS finals, winning one. That was Nadal's breakthrough year, so there's no shame in that. 09 saw Roger back on the top, he started 2010 where he left off but Nadal was once again the best. Roger was at his absolute best from 03-09, was still the #2 player in 08, 2010, 2014 and 2015. 2012 and 2017 I'd say was a split. 2012 between him and Nole, with Nole being slightly on 5ip, and 2017 between him and Rafa, with Rafa being the year end #1 but Roger dominating the rivalry during the year and having the best winning percentage. He was still up there in 2018 and 2019, being bested by no other than Nole. Frankly it's just this year, where Roger finally saw his demise. Let's hope he can return to good levels in 2022
as much as I am a huge Federer fan, I think he is just a little too old, and probably will never play like he used to ever again. maybe still top 50 but nowhere near as good as Nadal or djokovic

One should also remember he is doing all this with obsolete technique(one handed backhand, crazy slices, drop shots, volleys, etc)only he is talented enough to pull off in modern times with racquet tech from 1982. Would be like someone destroying everyone on the PGA tour using wood drivers and never taking a divot because they can time release to perfection. Those who know, really know he is the GOAT. No has even come close in totality. Titles don’t tell the whole story. If so much tech and court speed hand’t been so heavily adjusted to widen the opportunity for the less talented, he would likely have near 60 majors.
His technique is not obsolete, the one handed backhand has its drawbacks, no doubt, but Tzitsipas and Thiem show that you can be successful with this style even in these days. Furthermore, a slice is hugely underestimated, it changes the pace, and it is very difficult to hit a powerful shot when returning a slice. And in certain situations volleys still work, just the old style serve and volley players cannot compete with the strong baseliners as the pace of the shots has increased dramatically down the years. However, I agree that Federer is the GOAT!!

For sure in 2005,2006,2007. He was unbeatable except Rafa on Clay. Would have been hell of a record but Rafa really spoiled the party :). Fed and Djoker have been spoiling Rafa's party at Wimbledon and Aus Open though :) after 2009.
If federer might have delayed family life for 6 more years and focussed on strength & durability buliding, strategically working on his opponents weakness with better strategic coaches, we might have had a different tennis history. But finally it is what it is .AUS 2017 final is an example what he can do if he want to do.
agree.., the real mistake was post 2007 Wimbledon...right there he should have started working on his game..the backhand side and court positioning in rallies and on return..the work did not being until 2014-15...shame..
Such magical years for Federer. They got me back into watching tennis. The amazing, fluid movement and the shotmaking were unparalleled. His dominance during this period became his enemy, though. I think it delayed him switching to a more modern racket by several years, and I think that probably cost him several Grand Slams.
It's incredible to see how quiet and unassuming these players were. So much respect for one another as professionals. Some of the shots Federer hit in these highlights would have current players doing racket shakes and playing up the crowd with arm waving and ear pointing ..but Federer, nope, just moves calmly to the next point barely any expression ... total class and humility. In comparison today's players are like spoilt children way too much self-awareness and much less mental toughness.
As a tennis fan who grew up watching Roger during his prime years, it's no wonder why many people consider him as the Greatest even after many years had passed and many records that he set had already been broken (e.g. is GS Records which Rafa and Nole have surpassed), and I could understand the biases people have towards Federer... Guys let me tell you, during 2004-2007 I was in my junior days, and everything about his game was just UNREAL. There was no player, EVER up until the time he came to the Tennis scene that moved so gracefully to the court, and the way he made the game look so EASY to the eyes; the forehand whip, the backhand flick, the poetry of a motion in his service, the ridiculous drop shots and lobs and his footwork that looks like he was floating in the air. None of players that came before him (Agassi, Sampras, Hewitt, Roddick, Nalbandian) did those things like Federer, and the hype that was building around him was just SURREAL. I remember when I first saw him on the TV, it was year 2005 of AO, and he was ranked #1 already, and I didn't pay that much attention, he lost the SF with Safin... Then afterwards I never watched him again until 2007, and when I saw him again, the one thing that struck me was that infamous #1 ranking in his name; I thought, "HE IS STILL Rank #1!?" The media often talked about how Federer is the greatest, even at some point he only just won his 4th Wimbledon title during '06. When he won the French Open in 2009, many pundits have already put a definite period on him that HE WAS THE GREATEST. Fast forward, yes, Federer may not be the greatest in statistics, but he definitely won the hearts of many, (including mine) not just by his exquisite style of play, but by his enduring legacy as a Tennis player who truly defined tennis to its core; as an ART to be spectacled, and I'm very lucky to witness it all from his prime years down to his retirement. It's Federer who inspired me to play tennis as a recreation sport, and no athlete had convinced me this much to play the game as much as he did (before I used to play only Basketball). A confident Federer was unbeatable. His talent took over and nobody could hang with him. Even in his mid to late 30s he could still beat anyone when he played his best. For my money the highest level of tennis in history is Federer 05-07. 09 Rafa is close, but I have to give Fed the title.

Federer's prime is 2004-2009, not 2004-2007. He didn't magically stop being at his prime aged 26 just because he lost to Nadal in 3 consecutive Slam matches (RG 2008, WB 2008, AO 2009). Nadal just had a superior prime level.
Prime Federer was amazing. Totally agree!! FYI, Federer and Djokovic played for the first time at Monte Carlo in 2006. Djokovic was age 18 at the time and lost that match in 3 sets. We can all agree that Federer was in his prime, but he was pushed by the young Djokovic. Djokovic lost his next three matches to Federer, but did take another set off him in 2007 at Dubai at age 19. To recap, Federer won their first four encounters when Djokovic was a teenager, but half of those matches went the distance. Djokovic finally got him at the Masters 1000 in Canada in the summer of 2007 at age 20--an epic 3-set win. Federer was at his peak with a massive forehand and supreme athleticism. They duo met two more times in the next six months at the 2007 US Open final and 2008 Australian Open semi-final. To recap, Djokovic won two of their first three meetings after he turned age 20. How did teenage / 20 year old Djokovic play prime Federer so tough?
Roger's instincts were unmatchable. He knew where the ball would be hit before the player hit the ball. I don't know if he moved based on the opponents body movements or racket head or just plain guessed. But he was right most of the time.
I dunno why tennis fans always have to determine who is goat, in reality no one set up a definition of the goat @tolendoi123 I believe Djokovic will have the best statistics in most terms and he is the most consistent player among the others. But it does not make him to be the goat. Federer may have the most beautiful game, his prime form maybe even stronger but nothing can be proven so please just enjoy the big 3 period and stop argueing really.

I actually think 2017 was his prime in terms of overall skill. 2004-2007 he was younger and so much better than the peer at that time. But in 2017 Australian open, he improved his backhands to another level and beat prime Nadal at the final. Therefore I think 2017 Federer was the best.
He made the Racket switch about 3 years later than he should’ve. Probably cost him a few Grandslams. And then he also let a few GS Finals get away from him when he had the lead. Just didn’t close. He should be sitting at 23-27 Grandslams.
100% agree. I watched this TH-cam video called "The Week Roger Federer Perfected Tennis" which I believe was during the 2015 Western & Southern Open, and his dominance on the court during that tournament is unmatched. To some degree, Federer even improved during his 30's with better serving accuracy, etc.
I'll need to watch that video, thanks. I think some of it has to do with some people feeling that by saying he had a longer prime, it is somehow an admission of his ability being diminished especially in relation to GOAT debates. I don't think that matters at all. I see him having a longer prime or higher level of tennis as something that only increases his impact to the game. When a player has won almost half his grand slam totals outside of his prime, then maybe their prime needs reconsidering, if it can even be defined at all.
@jo mamma Well I have only seen data between 2011-2015, but Federer actually decreased his amount of unforced errors versus winners, whilst his service speed remained the same relatively. Whilst yes as he got older his speed did decrease, I don't remember his speed dropping off massively after 2008, and Federers footwork has always been amazing, in my opinion probably the best ever. I still don't think we can easily categorise his prime, but I still think if we are, that there's a very strong arguement that it went on past 2008.
@jo mamma The stats are a breakdown of the individual years, interestingly his unforced error win percentage in 2013 was exactly the same as his 2011 count, 2014 and 2015 was better than his 2011 and 2012 count as well in that respect, in some ways he became a better player as he got older. Statistically speaking, Federer may not be considered as the GOAT (with Djokovic having been ranked #1 the longest and Nadal having the most grand slams). However, Federer is still the most naturally talented among the three of them, as well as the player whose serves, groundstrokes, and volleys most textbook, and smoothest footwork. His playing style is also the least “affected” of the three. I don’t know if I will miss Djokovic or Nadal when they retire, but I know for certain that tennis has not been the same for me since Federer has been sidelined with injury and will not be the same when he retires.

But the big 3 have been a real blessing to the sport, some of the matches they've all been part of, it's just crazy.
He made a lot of changes to his backhand, and that's what made him a monster again in 2017 -2019. Watching him learn to adapt to his older body and win the Aussie Open was incredible

To actual fans of tennis that can be unbiased for a second, do you think that just pure level of tennis wise, Novak Djokovic in 2011 or 2015 is at the same level of, lower then or above 2004-2007 Federer?
Surely novak's level lower than roger's. U can't compare Roger's peak/god mode to any player on non clay courts.. He likes to dictate points and hit winners every second or third shot unlike other players who forces their opponents to errors to win points.. His aggressive level of play which is very risky and to even think to pull it off on a consistent basis is something phenomenal.. That's why his peak level is the best ever.. Best example is RG 2011,shanghai 2014..
In my opinion, JUST MY OPINION, Federer is slightly above. Continuous resistance and a good number of victory against peak Nole even in his old age, and probably the fact that Roger was, in Roddick's words, the best attacker AND the best defender in the game, at his peak, makes me think that probably Roger would be complete enough and not hindered too much against Nole to take it. Slightly, very narrowly, but he would take it. But again it's just my opinion and people can definitely think it in another way, I don't want to start a debate on this, just give my thoughts

I think this honestly makes for a more interesting debate for a Federer fan who often values high level of attacking tennis which Novak pulled off in 2011. Also in 2006 Roger simply played more matches than Novak in 2015, hence them having the same amount of loses. In 2015 Novak made the final of every tournament that he played. The change in court speeds starting in ‘08/‘09 really helped the grinder/defensive players like Novak. Watching Fed in ‘04 courts it looks so much different. Props to Fed for thriving in both eras. If the courts weren’t slowed down Fed probably have 25+ Grandslams. It looks like now the ATP/each event is speeding up the courts a bit.

As a guy who grew up watching Federer's magic, i can tell. This guy was during 237 weeks n1, insane record!
He fucking did 10 grand slams finals in a row from Wimbledon 2005 to US Open 2007. He did 5 or 6 times more than 25 consecutive wins in all surfaces. From august 2006 till march 2007 he won 41 consecutives matches.
Literally from Wimbledon 2005 till Australian Open 2008, he just lost to Rafa in the Roland Garros in grand slam finals, he just lost 2 times in grand slam for 2 years and half !
Just to remember the people, Fed at that time did something crazy that none of the specialists or journalists just point : 3 three- quarters slams in 4 years, damn it ! This will never happen again. Nadal did it in 2010, Djokovic in 2011, 2015, and 2021, but Fed did it in 4 years, extraordinary accomplishment.
I would say that Rafa is probably a better player mentally, and Djokovic is more all- round better player, but the technique of Rodger was unbeatable in that time, i would suggest that his elegance and timing is probably the best of all time. During 2004- 2008 reign, he was just a monster. He was so good that he didn't even compete with one other guy of his generation, so he had to play at the highest level with guys who were already 4-5 years younger than him (Djokovic- Nadal- Murray- Wawrinka- Ferrer- Tsonga), even 10 years younger (Nishikori- Raonic- Zverev- Dimitrov- etc).

Why I think Fed is the GOAT is that he had to play in both Era's. Fast hard / grass courts and slow hard / grass courts. He was successful at both speeds. Truthfully Djoker and Nadal are not from same generation as Fed in tennis years. Rog had to adjust style of play and adapt to racket technology more than the other two. I just don't see Nole or Rafa putting up a fight against Rog on those old US open fast hard courts. Also 37 year old Fed pushing Joker to the limit in Wimby final 2019.....Cmon. enough said.

Federer never won on fast grass. Also thus year Djokovic won the australian open which had a cpi of 50 fastest court allowed.
I am so glad that I got to witness Fed in his prime. He was an absolute monster from 04-07, pretty much untouchable outside of clay. He has, in my opinion, the greatest offensive game ever. And while he doesn't get recognized for it, his defensive game was just as good.

Sampras, Becker, Edberg, and Krajicek would be getting passed and hitting volleys from their shoes all day long. It's just a different game now. If you were to take Federer, at his peak, and put him into the Sampras, Becker, Edberg era, I have no doubt Federer would have rained supreme. I also think Djokovic could have played with those guys and dominated. Sampras' backhand would not hold up against Federer, and it certainly wouldn't hold up against Novak. And both guys return too good, so I think Pete's serve would have been nullified just a bit. Now if he plays both guys on 90s era grass, I think he may could get some wins, but he wouldn't consistently beat them.
The first tennis match I saw was the us open final 2003, after that I became a Roddick fan. I was so pissed that Federer always won against him in every slam after that lol

Absolutely mind boggling to see the extreme angles and precision placement of the ball many times from what appears to originate from a sort of “flippy” quick racquet swing! It’s just amazing to see! This man has brought me and millions of others utter astonishment and joy for all of the reasons mentioned below. If one could count every completely improvisational, once and only once, shot he has invented as a separate ‘type’ of shot, combined with the more ‘standard’ shots (like a perfectly placed blind backhand overhead smash ; ) in his repertoire, I wonder how many it would add up to. The number would be very, very large, and, I believe it would dwarf that of any other player ever to hold a racket. I admit that this is an overly analytical way of contemplating what he brought to tennis, and for that matter sports more generally: sheer, unequaled genius.

People need to remember Federer's game was moulded for fast courts, not these slow courts we see these days. Prime Fed on a fast court was unstoppable, almost to the level of Nadal on clay.

And, if this was correct, then you would expect him to be losing to grinders, right? Wrong! At Wimbledon (other than to Nadal, who is a bad matchup and to Nole, who is simply better) he's lost to Tsonga, Raonic, Berdych, Anderson, and those players are total opposite of what you call a grinder. If the surface had been faster, you would probably add Roddick and maybe someone else like Isner to that group. Yes, it's true that there is no indoor carpet, yes, it's true that Wimbledon is slower than it used to be, but everything else is ranges from a bit slower to a bit faster, and everything is suited to Roger's and Nadal's taste. Theirs, and no one else's.
This is definitely a factor in the progression of the sport. Granted racquet technology had a huge impact on the modern game, but the ATP made a concentrated effort around the middle of Fed's prime to slow the courts. On one hand, they kind of had to cause the 90's saw matches such as Sampras-Ivanisevic where they just blasted 130mph unreturnable serves at each other with 3-4 shot rallies max and it wasn't good for the game. Fed came on the scene as a SnV'er and won his first couple Wimbledon's using that style. Nadal's emergence in 06 forced him to diversify his game which led to some truly historic matches. As for the speed of the court, Fed's best tournament by far was Cincinatti, which was the fastest surface in the game today. Not to mention all those indoor carpet tournaments he was unstoppable at.
Yup, I remember back in the day around 02-03 thinking American tennis was in good hands. Agassi still kicking but more important to the future Roddick had burst on the scene and literally dominated everyone he played. Then there was Blake, hyper talented player with the sky being his limit if he could put it all together, mainly consistency and confidence. Then Federer showed up and just destroyed their careers and ended US tennis, which has been a joke ever since. And plenty of other potential greats just became hurdles in Fed's story too - he literally kept an entire generation down. This guy was scary good in his peak. Like, probably a level never seen before and not reached even by Djokovic. Djoker is obviously the 🐐 by now, but thats in large part because his peak has, absurdly, continued into its 11th year by now. Fed, for the 4-5 year stretch of his prime - highest level ever seen, I'd say

No one is saying Djoker is not the best in terms of records (he is) but it is more of a discussion on how good Fed was in his Prime that others looked really mediocre and couldn't win much.

I'd say Roger's prime was 03-10.
He had an off year in 08, and he still reached 3 GS finals, winning one. That was Nadal's breakthrough year, so there's no shame in that.
09 saw Roger back on the top, he started 2010 where he left off but Nadal was once again the best.
Roger was at his absolute best from 03-09, was still the #2 player in 08, 2010, 2014 and 2015.
2012 and 2017 I'd say was a split. 2012 between him and Nole, with Nole being slightly on 5ip, and 2017 between him and Rafa, with Rafa being the year end #1 but Roger dominating the rivalry during the year and having the best winning percentage.
He was still up there in 2018 and 2019, being bested by no other than Nole.
Frankly it's just this year, where Roger finally saw his demise. Let's hope he can return to good levels in 2022

His technique is not obsolete, the one handed backhand has its drawbacks, no doubt, but Tzitsipas and Thiem show that you can be successful with this style even in these days. Furthermore, a slice is hugely underestimated, it changes the pace, and it is very difficult to hit a powerful shot when returning a slice. And in certain situations volleys still work, just the old style serve and volley players cannot compete with the strong baseliners as the pace of the shots has increased dramatically down the years. However, I agree that Federer is the GOAT!!

It's incredible to see how quiet and unassuming these players were. So much respect for one another as professionals. Some of the shots Federer hit in these highlights would have current players doing racket shakes and playing up the crowd with arm waving and ear pointing ..but Federer, nope, just moves calmly to the next point barely any expression ... total class and humility. As a tennis fan who grew up watching Roger during his prime years, it's no wonder why many people consider him as the Greatest even after many years had passed and many records that he set had already been broken (e.g. is GS Records which Rafa and Nole have surpassed), and I could understand the biases people have towards Federer...
Guys let me tell you, during 2004-2007 I was in my junior days, and everything about his game was just UNREAL. There was no player, EVER up until the time he came to the Tennis scene that moved so gracefully to the court, and the way he made the game look so EASY to the eyes; the forehand whip, the backhand flick, the poetry of a motion in his service, the ridiculous drop shots and lobs and his footwork that looks like he was floating in the air. None of players that came before him (Agassi, Sampras, Hewitt, Roddick, Nalbandian) did those things like Federer, and the hype that was building around him was just SURREAL.
I remember when I first saw him on the TV, it was year 2005 of AO, and he was ranked #1 already, and I didn't pay that much attention, he lost the SF with Safin... Then afterwards I never watched him again until 2007, and when I saw him again, the one thing that struck me was that infamous #1 ranking in his name; I thought, "HE IS STILL Rank #1!?"
The media often talked about how Federer is the greatest, even at some point he only just won his 4th Wimbledon title during '06. When he won the French Open in 2009, many pundits have already put a definite period on him that HE WAS THE GREATEST.
Fast forward, yes, Federer may not be the greatest in statistics, but he definitely won the hearts of many, (including mine) not just by his exquisite style of play, but by his enduring legacy as a Tennis player who truly defined tennis to its core; as an ART to be spectacled, and I'm very lucky to witness it all from his prime years down to his retirement.
It's Federer who inspired me to play tennis as a recreation sport, and no athlete had convinced me this much to play the game as much as he did (before I used to play only Basketball).

A confident Federer was unbeatable. His talent took over and nobody could hang with him. Even in his mid to late 30s he could still beat anyone when he played his best. For my money the highest level of tennis in history is Federer 05-07. 09 Rafa is close, but I have to give Fed the title.
I’m a Federer fan as much as anyone but what’s more amazing are the errors that his opponents make. This is a video that shows how he takes advantage of the errors - not his true greatness.

Federer's prime is 2004-2009, not 2004-2007. He didn't magically stop being at his prime aged 26 just because he lost to Nadal in 3 consecutive Slam matches (RG 2008, WB 2008, AO 2009). Nadal just had a superior prime level.
Prime Federer was amazing. Totally agree!! FYI, Federer and Djokovic played for the first time at Monte Carlo in 2006. Djokovic was age 18 at the time and lost that match in 3 sets. We can all agree that Federer was in his prime, but he was pushed by the young Djokovic. Djokovic lost his next three matches to Federer, but did take another set off him in 2007 at Dubai at age 19. To recap, Federer won their first four encounters when Djokovic was a teenager, but half of those matches went the distance.
Djokovic finally got him at the Masters 1000 in Canada in the summer of 2007 at age 20--an epic 3-set win. Federer was at his peak with a massive forehand and supreme athleticism. They duo met two more times in the next six months at the 2007 US Open final and 2008 Australian Open semi-final. To recap, Djokovic won two of their first three meetings after he turned age 20. Roger's instincts were unmatchable. He knew where the ball would be hit before the player hit the ball. I don't know if he moved based on the opponents body movements or racket head or just plain guessed. But he was right most of the time.

I actually think 2017 was his prime in terms of overall skill. 2004-2007 he was younger and so much better than the peer at that time. But in 2017 Australian open, he improved his backhands to another level and beat prime Nadal at the final. Therefore I think 2017 Federer was the best.

I watched this TH-cam video called "The Week Roger Federer Perfected Tennis" which I believe was during the 2015 Western & Southern Open, and his dominance on the court during that tournament is unmatched. To some degree, Federer even improved during his 30's with better serving accuracy, etc.
I'll need to watch that video, thanks. I think some of it has to do with some people feeling that by saying he had a longer prime, it is somehow an admission of his ability being diminished especially in relation to GOAT debates. I don't think that matters at all. I see him having a longer prime or higher level of tennis as something that only increases his impact to the game. When a player has won almost half his grand slam totals outside of his prime, then maybe their prime needs reconsidering, if it can even be defined at all.
@jo mamma Well I have only seen data between 2011-2015, but Federer actually decreased his amount of unforced errors versus winners, whilst his service speed remained the same relatively. Whilst yes as he got older his speed did decrease, I don't remember his speed dropping off massively after 2008, and Federers footwork has always been amazing, in my opinion probably the best ever. I still don't think we can easily categorise his prime, but I still think if we are, that there's a very strong arguement that it went on past 2008.
@jo mamma The stats are a breakdown of the individual years, interestingly his unforced error win percentage in 2013 was exactly the same as his 2011 count, 2014 and 2015 was better than his 2011 and 2012 count as well in that respect, in some ways he became a better player as he got older. Statistically speaking, Federer may not be considered as the GOAT (with Djokovic having been ranked #1 the longest and Nadal having the most grand slams). However, Federer is still the most naturally talented among the three of them, as well as the player whose serves, groundstrokes, and volleys most textbook, and smoothest footwork. His playing style is also the least “affected” of the three. I don’t know if I will miss Djokovic or Nadal when they retire, but I know for certain that tennis has not been the same for me since Federer has been sidelined with injury and will not be the same when he retires.

To actual fans of tennis that can be unbiased for a second, do you think that just pure level of tennis wise, Novak Djokovic in 2011 or 2015 is at the same level of, lower then or above 2004-2007 Federer?
Surely novak's level lower than roger's. U can't compare Roger's peak/god mode to any player on non clay courts.. He likes to dictate points and hit winners every second or third shot unlike other players who forces their opponents to errors to win points.. His aggressive level of play which is very risky and to even think to pull it off on a consistent basis is something phenomenal.. That's why his peak level is the best ever.. Best example is RG 2011,shanghai 2014..
In my opinion, JUST MY OPINION, Federer is slightly above. Continuous resistance and a good number of victory against peak Nole even in his old age, and probably the fact that Roger was, in Roddick's words, the best attacker AND the best defender in the game, at his peak, makes me think that probably Roger would be complete enough and not hindered too much against Nole to take it. Slightly, very narrowly, but he would take it.
But again it's just my opinion and people can definitely think it in another way, I don't want to start a debate on this, just give my thoughts

@Logan Legend Well you did a great analysis of Novak's 2015 form, however how do you think things could be different if Novak is in 2011 mode where he is I attack mode. I think this honestly makes for a more interesting debate for a Federer fan who often values high level of attacking tennis which Novak pulled off in 2011. Also in 2006 Roger simply played more matches than Novak in 2015, hence them having the same amount of loses. In 2015 Novak made the final of every tournament that he played. Just something to think about stats wise.
