This is great! I am currently a Medical Assistant and I have been working in a family practice office but my goal is to become a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner as I am working through school I wanted something that would build up my experience in behavioral health. I recently applied for a Mental Health Tech position and was offered the job and am finishing up at my current job. I know a lot about it because I worked as a Mental Health Tech through home health. I came looking for other people's experiences working in a hospital setting. I really liked your video and good luck!

I'm a Psych Major, with the desire to be a Counselling Psychologist in the future. I'm thinking about joining the Army NG as a Behavioral Health Specialist (68x) next year, then getting into entry level psychology jobs after training.

I just changed my major to psychology and completely changed from in person school to online. I also just got a job offer as a psych tech! I’m a little nervous to see what I’ll be doing, but I worked at a jail as a corrections officer, so I think I’ve might’ve seen it all lol! Thanks for the info!

Great video! I’m a new grad and I’m going to start my new job at a psych facility. I’m quite intimidated to be honest. I have experience as a CNA/mental health worker but I have a license now. I was working as a psych yeah straight out of school a few months ago but it was a nightmare and not bc of the patients it was the person who was training me, she was not nice. I really got a bad taste in my mouth but I’m going at it again and hoping this will be a better experience.

i’m located in SoCal and you just need to be a cna for this job and if you want a more advanced position then you just need a certificate in Licensed pych tech no need a for 4 year degree but it’s useful experience for those studying pych to become clinical psychologist
I’m pretty sure a CNA can take on this position as well without a degree if they have experience and training! That’s so awesome! 💕

I have an interview for this position and I’m wondering if it will be more like an orderly where I’m holding down aggressive patients since it’s not in a hospital setting. Also very interested in the de-escalation techniques and if anyone has lost it with you. A bit hesitant to take the job. I have a bachelor’s in psych but don’t recall learning about de-escalation, only abnormal behaviors and whatnot which I found pretty interesting.

I was so happy to see this video!! I just graduated with my BA in Psych in December and currently doing orientation for my new job as an MHT at a psychiatric facility! Unfortunately, my orientation training is only like a week, maybe 2.... I’m more nervous than I thought I’d be and I’m so afraid someone might get hurt because of something I do wrong like missing something during a room check, etc. 🙁 My supervisors and directors said it’ll be common to be cussed out, but that part does not scare me, as I’ve been called every name under the sun since a young age and it’s not a trigger for me. 😅 I want to get my MSW as well! Good luck on your journey! Do you have any helpful tips or things you wish you would have known going into this job position? :)

And I totally get feeling scared about that but just remember we can never always 100% know what someone can do and we can’t always prevent them from hurting themselves, we can only do our best! Just do what you can and everything will be okay ☺️💕

I just graduated with my bachelors this May in psychology ! & I’ve been looking into becoming a psych tech for awhile before I go back for my masters in clinical health psychology but you mentioned you have to do duties such as personal care.. you have to change & clean the patients??? ...
That’s awesome congrats! And yes I would have to do that if we had patients who were in wheelchairs or who were older but usually the CNA’s did those duties and I just helped them! It happened rarely tho!

Hey! I’m in need for help. I’m trying to pass my exam. Having a hard time any suggestions?
I really want to do it, but I’m scared. People tell me that it’s a tough job and some tech get assaulted by the patients and I’m scared because I weight less than 120 and I’m 5.0. Do you think it’s better to work in the ED unit or in an inpatient unit?
are you the one that administers the medicine for the patients or gives them their daily dose of medicine or is that a specific kind of nurses job? I am getting my perquisites in nursing because that is what I want to do but if this is what a psych technician does I can finish school with a faster psych tech program here in California. Thank you I was inspired by a relative who spent a month in a psych hospital and described this certain nurse or maybe psych tech job description. Also did you have to lift heavy objects/ patients. I suffer from back problems and cant carry things that are too heavy. I have heard psych techs in prisons do not have to carry patients or heavy objects but I would much rather work at a psych hospital
Hello! I know some psych techs do administer medication but for my particular role I didn’t! And I think the only sometimes heavy things I lifted were some patient belongings like suitcases or heavy bags but I didn’t have to lift patients, security usually did that in emergency situations! Hope this helped!

Can you still be a pysch tech with a certification instead of a degree? How similar is it to a CNA?
I believe you can, it depends on where you live! It is kind of similar to CNA!

I need to know: do you have some privacy or are you being watched at all times? Can you have your cell phone on you in case you have a family emergency? I have a puppy I need to keep an eye on 24 hours a day. So I’m worried about her firstly. Do you have to stand the whole shift????
You are usually spending all your time on the floor with patients, and there’s always nurses around with you and other staff, and they usually discourage having cell phones on you but you can leave it in the nurses station and check it! And no you don’t have to stand the whole shift but some days you sit more and other days you’re always on your feet if it’s busy! Hope this helps! ☺️

So you don’t need a certification? I have a psychology degree from another school
I didn’t need one for my job because the job provided on the job training!
Hi! Is it required that you have a BA degree to get into this position?
It will depend on your state and where you apply but for my position it was strongly recommended to have a bachelors but not required!

This is so late but in some places you only need a CNA license
is being a psych tech needs a license to get that job? im interested in psych tech hehe
For me I didn’t need a license because we had on the job training but it could be different based on where you live! 🤎

I did not have to get drug tested and I did have to get a tetanus shot! 💕
What certifications do I need to become a psych tech?
None. Just a HSD or GED.
