This is pretty accurate, I don't know what the comments are talking about. I've been a psych tech for 2 years as a side job for college, and it's a phenomenal job. However, it's not for everyone. you need to be able to work 12 hour shifts, and you have to be able to handle incredibly emotional situations while remaining rational. You do a lot of group activities with the patients, and you check their vital signs as well as check up on them in intervals. You have to be sensitive, but you can't be TOO sensitive; it sounds cruel, but you have to be able to laugh about things you see in the facility, or else you'll become one of the patients yourself. And if you're in a place that has a lot of people with substance abuse problems, prepare to be manipulated.
Is there anything you would recommend reading to help prepare? I am going to start as a tech and any resource that can better prepare me will be appreciated.

The great thing about this is that you can emphatise with the patients. You can easily put your feet in their shoes and they may feel at ease when they know that you experience the same feelings that they go through. You may make them feel not alone.
I think you’d be great and I hope you ended up in that field! I don’t think anyone who does any job has all the answers or all their ducks in a row when they start. This is a total dog and pony show. Not realistic at all. Been in the game for over 20+yrs and I've got more common sense than the nurse or doctor. Therapy used is outdated and the meds are even worse. People need talk therapy not dope and restraints. The love juice they put in your body is terrible. I could right a book and make a movie based on what I've seen in the mental health field.
sandman15697 I agree that many docs and RN’s I have worked with should not be in the field but otherwise your comments are dangerous! Medications in the type of environment I work in (I am a Licensed PT in the state of California working at a locked, state hospital with PC 2972 patients) are absolutely necessary in conjunction with other forms of treatment and it’s irresponsible for you to say otherwise. I was assaulted brutally 3 years ago by a patient who was highly psychotic and grossly under-medicated! I would say the fact that he beat me brutally and wasn’t going to stop hurting me or himself unless they placed him in restraints was necessary. When a patient beats his head into a wall and refuses to stop hurting himself I would say restraints are necessary. I would say the patient whose doctor lowered their meds so low that the patients med levels were no longer therapeutic and then this patient sexually assaulted and tried to choke to death one of my female coworkers was just as irresponsible as your comments here! 🤦🏼♀️
Ashley Chandler Ashley Chandler medications are a necessary part of the treatment plan for most psych patients, especially the very violent ones that will hurt you in an instant especially when they’re under medicated, patients do not become “immune” they build what’s called a tolerance, and I’m sorry for your Uncle but unfortunately one of the possible side effects of antidepressants is suicidal ideation..... and FYI there is no cure for mental illness only treatment and as many patients age their symptoms lesson and we don’t lock our patients in rooms they have rights while being held. You should educated yourself further on this entire subject and actually talk with people like myself who work mental health. 🤦🏼♀️

That has to be one of the worst jobs on the planet!!! Being around that energy day in and day out has to take it's toll on an individual's overall well being. The question is What type of consciousness would draw an experience where you would have a job as this. From a higher prospective Both are in need of tremendous healing. The employees are not aware of it Though. Life is a reflection of the inner.
The BLU Phoenix Sky I currently work with Adolescents on this level. I have always been completely enveloped in helping people throughout my life. I feel that one does this job, first to assist others in leading happy lives, and second as a source of experience prior to moving on to the work they would really love to do. Most people do not want to work as Direct Care staff forever. It pays like crap, and it is INTENSE, especially when working with an acute behavioral population. I strongly agree that nobody enters this field without their share of trauma, whether firsthand or secondary (a family member or friend, or maybe even classmate). But I will also say that not all of us are as you are describing us to be. Arguably, you must absolutely embrace everything you are and can be in order to work in Psych. If you aren't able to take feedback and understand harsh truths about you, then there is no business in you being there. You can not support anyone if you are lacking self-awareness. Although a good program does require employees to participate in therapy and incident debriefing to minimize the risk of additional secondary traumas. If you ever have a chance to volunteer with a non-profit that provides these services, know that the experience is highly recommended.
Where did the idea of putting random people with strange various unknown diseases of the brain altogether come from and why did they think it would be healing or therapeutic to anyone involved? It’s basically just get patients on large doses (probably too large) of sedatives and call it healing.

Every single patient that was here for abusing a child was once themselves abused as a child.
Every
Single
One.
😑
@@JoshDisher hi! I live in Texas so either here or maybe Colorado. It’s so sad and so true about the abused child circle, it’s like that phrase about bullies getting bullied at home, it’s an endless cycle until someone who truly understands comes along. I haven’t been through addiction or alchoholism myself, but I have definitely had it around me and with people in my close circle. I’m currently almost done with my bachelors in psychology, so I’m hoping that means I am understanding lol. I’m proud of you for doing all your research and Thankyou for getting back to me
i begin a job on a crisis unit. im so nervous but excited
I hope you safe but good luck
I have a job interview for a Behavioral Health Associate at a psych hospital for teens and children, but I have suffered with anxiety and depression myself. Is that okay? Would this be a safe profession for me to go into? I've always been into psychology, but I don't want to make anyone worse.
The great thing about this is that you can emphatise with the patients. You can easily put your feet in their shoes and they may feel at ease when they know that you experience the same feelings that they go through. You may make them feel not alone.

Try teaching
I think you’d be great and I hope you ended up in that field! I don’t think anyone who does any job has all the answers or all their ducks in a row when they start. Don’t worry about failing, the simple fact that you care says a lot and you never know who you might help by you being you! Even if it’s just one person, you went through everything you went through for a reason and you’re called to helping others for a reason!
If you’re someone that suffer with depression & anxiety yourself, so u think this would be a good job for the person that suffers?
Absolutely! Who could understand the patients more than you? It's like a Peer Specialist position.
Yes! Those who have experience from disorders etc that finally cured themselves... Can be easy for you cuz you understand more what the patients is feeling...
Unless if your interested of doing this tho...
I want to!!
as long as you don’t get triggered by anything
lksdflmff somlkmkm thank you for the advice
This video makes me cry . I battle with depression, but the question still remains
Is this post-traumatic stressing or am I suppressing rage?
And my doctor tries to tell me that I'm going through a phase
Yeah, it's not a fucking phase, I just wanna feel okay, okay?
If I were younger this would have been the job I would have wanted I worked in doctor office but this job would have been ideal for me to help others I have anxiety and panic disorder take medication 💊 this would have been ideal for me to help others like I was helped
i’m going to be doing this in a prison. man
What has your experience been like?
I don't get why you need medical school or degrees to do this. This is exactly what I did at High Point under a different "title" and I got paid a lot less and came in a lot for other people's shifts.
I work in IT and thinking of changing careers to become a phsytech
Zalo Alvarez’s me too I’m going to school for web developing but this sounds interesting and I know I’m about helping people anyway I can

Hello I hope someone reads this question: Do I need to get a certification to start working as a technician. Also, where would I go to be certified. Please comment.
I Cali
In most States you need at least 2 years of college, then you need to get a license.
Google
I'm having two illnesses but I always do in hell I'm going to spend in a psych ward
The Sterile walls still breed an anxiety from me
i don't know why.

I’ve been thinking about checking myself in one of these but I’ll be scared and I’ll be away from my mom. Plus the other thing I’ll hate is not being able to have my phone to listen to music
Mysticofshadowyhearts if you need it go yeah it sucks no phone but your health is so important goodluck love✨
It may suck but you will be more happier and in good health I mean at the end it will prob be worth it 😀
You know what you need and sometimes it's just a temporary experience to kick you into the next gear of your life... you can do well, believe it will get better and it will.
@Ashley Chandler it's terrible
@David Vanpatten yep that's how it goes passing stupid ass doctors who lack common sense
Happy psychiatric Technicians Day January 16.
One of the techs is wearing a lanyard..one of the techs walks in the room corners herself, with an agitated pt. Nurse walks in stetoscope just hanging around her neck. Tech sitting down with a pt showing aggresive behavior with a pen on her front pocket loooool. There are so many things wrong with this video. The girl says be on guard but the guy initiates physical contact with a pt. This video shows what not to do at all costs working a psych unit
Maybe there’s level of patients. And these aren’t what would call a danger to anyone.
What is the career advancement ladder above a Psych Tech?
Latrine Attendant
(With the exception of California)
in my state, there are what they called, psych tech I II III, but some mental hospital dont offer such advancement and youre literally stuck at the bottom unless you get yoursel a degree which you can become a case manager.
my dream job🥺
mine too
LOL! what a fucking commercial! the reality is pure nuts!!! it IS like the movies! ive been a patient, and Arizona state mental hospital is just one of many examples.
Is a psych tech the same as a support worker?
Kate Edwards psych techs are nurses. We take the same test as an LVN and are licensed. But this video shows part of what we do we also administer medication and implement treatments.
@@crimsonwastaken5229 psychiatric nurse is different than psychiatric technician, psychiatric technician are comparable to cna than nurse thats why they are called "technician"
@@apdroidgeek1737 CNAs dont adminster drugs and implement treatments we're on the same level as LVNs but get paid more in CA lol
@@CarlosHerrera-fv2kq actually in my state CNA can administer drugs. Also in my state mental health technicians are not even licensed or certified, the state of california is the only state required to have a licensese and a 2 year degree which imo might aswell go with ADN.
I have a mental illness myself. If anyone needs payer let me know how I can help.
I’m a political kind of person I probably maybe can solve out your life problems but I’m not a psychology kind of person
I don't think most of these places require a hs diploma for this. That's the type of people who work in these joints.
interesting video.

How to be a psych tech after graduating as a psych student? Someone pls answer
I just graduated with an associates in mental health and social work and got hired for a psyc tech, I applied through indeed
I need help
With what? Tell me
Wish a dr told parents to give strict diet
You could end up somewhere like that if you got to strict with the diet.
My mom was talking about sending me to one. I got really scared. And I get That there not all the same but now I'm not as scared.
Why would she send you to one?
@@HATE_Trious she saw that i cut myself. And my dad said he found broken glass in my room. Witch is a total lie because i used scissors. I haven't cut in like 2 weeks tho, so im doing good😊
Bruh 😂😂 this is not accurate at all dude this job is horrible it's hard and not at all easy but it pays well
This is the most amazing job ever. I have a degree in psychiatric rehabilitation, and being able to talk with these people and live with them knowing they trust you and love you no matter what means the world to me. It's something you have to love
@Desire Sawwan hi! Well, I'm from Italy so idk how much I can help you getting into it in a foreign State
@Desire Sawwan where I work all management positions were actually created for psych techs. Even Nursing Coordinator. There is a lot of advancement opportunities. However, I don’t know how it is at other facilities.
@@xjulesbottleyou majoring into psychology but I’m trying to think if I ever can be into political position jobs like studying politics if I wanna to go back to school. I know psychology and politics are two different subjects but we both actually study about the human behaviors.
I’ve been to a mental hospital in the adolescent unit 5 times yeet
And you’re boasting about it. Attention seeker
Stay strong sister. It's a war inside. Get that sword and fight hard! God bless you always.
@@cringefest7841 She's not boasting smart guy... she's reaching for help and a word of encouragement... geez I sure hope you never try to work in this field man....
...this video is a joke. Not the job, THIS video. This is not an accurate portrayal of what a mental health specialist goes through in a day... I was so hopeful to find support in this video. I've been a mental health specialist for four years and this is not what my job is like.

It only depends on who's running the clinic , everything in professional is propaganda
Yeah you guys fight get your asses handed to you by some of these guys in the psychiatric facility but hey why little crazy sometimes
Why not just train parents instead of random PPL that keeps changing
You guys should study how an insane man thinks thanks you might be intriguing even interested and how he thinks the way you thinks just an idea I don't pass around the crazy Winnie bag and just yet
Do psychiatric technicians wipe ass?
Psych is not for everyone.
Typically no blood though, or infectious diseases, that’s a major plus.
sounds like a dangerous job. I wonder if they teach you Karate or Judo too.
+From The Bottom of My Heart are you kidding lol
we get taught MAB.
management of assaultive behaviors . do you work in one in Calif? i was at Coalinga back when it first opened
Randolph Agarn, I now this is late but if you're still there I'd like to ask you a question...
I currently live in Coalinga and wanted to apply but I have no training or studies on this subject. A psytech nearby told me to apply with my current status, that they would train me and enroll me in a program to get certified.
Is that true or what do you suggest I do? The last thing I want is to get rejected and not be able to reapply.
THANKS in advance.
Ed. l am so sorry l didnt see this post till now. go to the hospital to get your foot in the door, then get out and go to CDCR, Pleasent Valley if you can i was there for 5 months. lf you are not a psych tech yet i dont know how to go about doing the 20/ 20 program, i didnt do that. i was a psych tech long before i went to the state. l went to psych tech school a million years ago. l worked private first. i loved PVSP but i got a SPT spot at CEN and moved for the promotion. i was not sad to leave Coalinga the town. You mean besides abusing the patients?
propaganda
Recruitment, dummy
That has to be one of the worst jobs on the planet!!! Being around that energy day in and day out has to take it's toll on an individual's overall well being. The question is What type of consciousness would draw an experience where you would have a job as this. From a higher prospective Both are in need of tremendous healing. The employees are not aware of it Though. Life is a reflection of the inner.
The BLU Phoenix Sky Very true. But bc of their experiences, the employee can relate
The BLU Phoenix Sky
I currently work with Adolescents on this level.
Dena l did my first 7 years as a psych tech on an Adolescent unit in a private psych hospital. then one year on adult then went to CDCR/ corrections.
This is exactly my thought process.
Where did the idea of putting random people with strange various unknown diseases of the brain altogether come from and why did they think it would be healing or therapeutic to anyone involved? It’s basically just get patients on large doses (probably too large) of sedatives and call it healing.
