Great job as always Noel. You are hands down the best board coach on the web. Its easy to tell how much thought and effort you put into creating these videos. If anyone should be able to do this for a career, you're the guy.
The way you bring all this information across really helps me to understand more and more how surfboards work. Everything gets explained so simpel so it really helps to gain knowledge. I learn a lot with every video that I watch. Thank you Noel, I really appreciate that!
@@guy-jayb3909 The RW has a sharper outline. The BV2 has a wider nose and tail. The BV2 is faster down the line. The RW offers more performance in the pocket.
Enjoyed that review! I currently use a 5'8 Sharpeye storms 25.8l but want something better suited for smaller 1-3ft weak waves. Do you think the 5'7 Rocketwide PU would be good or should I go with something shorter? I was also thinking #44 by CI (groveler dims) but not heard much about it. Thanks.
The RW out performs the Mashup in the pocket. The RW draws more high performance lines and makes the Mash Up fell like a cruiser. The Mashup paddles a little better, it feels looser underfoot and might carry a little more speed in 1-2’ surf. The Mashup wave range is best in 1-3’ surf.
Looking for my next small wave board to replace my Pizel Gremlin 5'5" (28.2L) which doesn't work so well for me. I'm kinda sold on the Rocket Wide. Just in doubt between a 5'5" (25.8L) or a 5'6" (27.2L) Spinetek EPS. The board that works best for me all around is a CI Black/White 5'9" (24.9L). I'm 5'7", at 136lbs. Which size would you recommend for a Rocket Wide?
Sitting here with my favourite drink (fresh coconut) on a beach in Indo enjoying the episode and looking forward to getting this board now! Thanks Noel!
Morning Noel, currently have a rocket 9 thats running out of life. Need some input on if I should get another rocket 9 (really enjoyed the board), or if i should get a rocket wide. Would be used as my daily driver for 2-6 surf. Seems like you enjoyed the wide more, but can it handle those 6 foot days like the 9 does? Main concern would be the flatter entry rocker for steeper faces. Currently ride my 9 as a 2+1
Great video! I am 6’0, 195lbs and have the 6’0 rocketwide spinetek intermediate/advanced. I feel like it is a little big for me as I struggle to put it where I want in small surf and pivot as quick as I’d like. I currently ride it with large reactor fcs2 fins. Do you think 2+1 AMT fins would help? In large given my size? Thanks!
@@surfnshowreviews7777 thanks very much for such a speedy response. Have ordered them, looking forward to testing! Would you say that for my height/weight/ability, I should be more in 32-34l range rather than 37l that I currently have? Reason I ask is I want to buy a Pyzel Phantom, but not sure on size. The 6’0 is 32.6l and 6’1 34.4l. Thanks for help!
Hey Noel, I’ve noticed you’ve said the squash tail RW has improved on the swallow tail model. How would you compare the Squash RW with the Neckbeard 2? Would the NB2 still be your go to board in regard to small wave performance?
Hey Noel, awesome review. Wasn't surprised to hear you say it was one of the best ever for 1-3'. I have a 5'9 / 32L which I love, but only been surfing 2 years and I wonder if I would progress faster if I had 3 more liters and trade out for for 5'11 / 6'0? I'm 5'11 / 170 lbs. Do you think that would make sense to make the jump here for faster progress?
Here are some volume ranges to consider for your weight at different skill levels. Pro/Expert 27-29L Advanced 29-31L Intermediate 32-34L Beg/Int 35-37L You could go up to 34-35L to catch more waves and have a bit more stability under your feet
Hi Noël, i was thinking of ordering this board custom, taking the 5'7 original dims and stretching it to 5'9 and adding a round tail. The Idea is to keep the easy paddling characteristic but widening the wave range to make it look more like a daily driver. Do you think it's a good Idea? Or would a nb3 would just better suit my need ? For info i'm 5'10, 150lbs and low intermediate.
Hey Noel im going for the stock 6'2 which is 6'2 x 21 x 2 7/8 = 40.7 L.I usually go 2 3/4 on the thickness.Im unable to see the board before ordering unfortunately but do you think the rails will be big and boxy or more med-low performance type rails. My concern on boxy rails is the inability to bury the rail on the wave face. Please advise what you think.
How would you compare/recommend the rocket wide vs pyzel white tiger vs CI G-Skate? I live on the East Coast and want a groveler for North Florida, South Carolina, or OBX. Usually looking to surf a smaller board in 3-5 ft waves because that is a good day on this coast lol. Thanks!
Hey Noel great show keep it up. My buddy just bought the Rocket Wide but in PU. Do you think when the waves reach 3-5 feet that the PU would actually feel better than the EPS?? You did mention that the EPS didnt feel as sharp in the 3-4 feet.
I don't think the PU will matter when the surf gets bigger... I think it's the board design. It will go in 4' surf but that's not the ideal wave size for this model. I like EPS in 1-4' surf better compared to PU but it's a preference. Cheers!!
The board is one of my favorite boards to surf. I get excited when the waves are small because of the Rocket Wide in the Spine Tex. The CI website says the board is good up to head high? I wonder why it got sticky for you so quickly. I’ve surfed this board up to head high and didn’t feel the sticking. I suppose I have a lot more rail line @ 5’ 11”. Out of all the boards that you have tested, which board feels similar to the Rocket Wide in bigger/ better waves?
Thanks for all the great videos. Volume question: I’m in good shape, experienced, and I surf 6 days a week on Oahu (North and South). I like extra foam because I’m 52 years old and 180 pounds. Also, of course, Hawaii has long paddles, strong trade winds, currents, skilled crowds, and tough waves to catch in general. In overhead waves I ride a CI “Happy” at 33L. Feels maybe a touch small, but it’s fun to push myself. My tiny wave groveler is 39L and works great. I plan to surf the Rocket Wide in small to average surf (when the waves are too good for a 39L groveler but not good enough for the Happy). Unfortunately, I have mediocre skills, especially when it comes to building speed and approaching the lip vertically. I’m not sure if the extra volume, or not enough volume for my skill set, is making that worse? I’m trying to choose between 34.5 liters and 37 liters. One is closer to the groveler and one is closer to the Happy. What does your intuition tell you about the correct size for me? Thanks!
Great review as usual Noel. How would compare the RW to the Sampler? I absolutely love the Sampler, and also have a Pod Mod. Does the RW fit between those two, or would it take the same spot in my quiver as the Sampler? Cheers!
Robert marks I like your choices so far... the Sampler and PM were favorites of mine. The RW fits better in the pocket compared to the Sampler and pocket surfs better compared to the PM. The RW is really quick like the Sampler but the PM out paddles them both. All 3 boards are sick but if I had to choose 1 for surf in 1-3’ range I would go RW in Spine-Tek. It does it all in small surf..... cheers
I personally think it would be rad to have you as a Wildcard on the next Trestles event. You'd rip out there and it'd be a nice change from the typical wildcards that usually get called into that event.
just ordered a custom spine-tek RW. thanks for all the reviews noel. surfnshow is my first stop when researching a new ride. 🤙. curious on your thoughts for a 2+1 setup for futures. what would you recommend?
Just got one of these guys yesterday, I took it out the first day with the black sticks as a thruster in weak 2 to 3 foot surf. The fins and board kept wanting to jump out of the water which was great in weak mushy close outs. Today, I did the 2 plus one setup (kaipas with a nubster). The board was super fun and playful but when I took it out in punchy surf it was quick and responsive in the critical parts of the wave with the spine tek. My buddy let me borrow his in the PU, which I felt handled the top end of the wave spectrum (handling better than the spine tek in bigger surf). So all in all, a super fun summer board that seems to perform better in better surf with the single to double set up. Lastly, after all boards that I field test in the water I always ask myself the same question at the end My session “Do I have aspirations to surf this board in better surf”? You know what I’ve been meaning to ask you, wouldn’t it be sick to review carver Boards that feel like surf when the waves are subpar? Just a thought like things to better your surf when the waves suck
Hey Noel...torn between the Pyzel Astro POP and RW...which board will be a better overall option? In terms of ability which you reckon offers more?...sweet channel bro🤙🏼
Hey Noel love the reviews have a question after riding both what board would you say is a better groveler between the rocket wide and the lost hydra? Or what conditions would you recommend one in more than the other?
Hi Noel, Getting the 6’0 squash tail as a mushy 1-3ft groveller and I’d love to give a 2+1 setup a go to give more speed in the smaller, weak stuff however I’m not sure if it will work with the squash tail compared to the swallow? Also what would be your 2+1 recommendation for futures? Sick review as always🤙🏽
I like the Al Merrick Twins + Trailer for small wave performance boards. They will go good in the RE Squash tail too. Another 2+ Trailer in futures that’s good is the T1.
Hi noel, Iv got the rw and the mini ghost. I realy Like the rw for 2 feet beach break. It feels great under my back feet(like arocket). Looking for the most similar board to the rw(not ci). What do you recon? Cheers
Hey Noel, I've got the RW and I'm trying to decide on which pivot fin to get for small sized waves. You recently started testing the NVS peregrine lately but also noticed you riding the futures P8 in the surfboard wars episode. Which one do you like best? Thanks!
Cory Brown I like the Peregrine’s better. However.... I like the RW best in 1-2’ surf with the AMT Twin + Trailer. The AMT is Al Merrick Twins and they are super upright. You can shred the RW with the AMT’s in 1-4’ surf no problem and it’s a game changer in speed. I recommend those fins first in Honeycomb.
Hi noel?did you try the rw in PU?does it steel feel fast and easy paddling?Do you recommend take a half little more if its Pu? I'm 5.9 165 lbs 45 yes old surf 25 years in 1-3 ft waves.i have the sampler in 29.4 liter, fells a bit stucked for me,and I have new flyer 27.9 liter,my best board ever but I need more foam for paddling.how many liter do you recommend?cheers
Hi, thank you for your great reviews! I want to order the rocket wide model What is better for medditrian waves 1'-4' ft, Swallow or squash tail, and what is the difference?
Hi Noel, I’m debating between the rocket 9 w/ dual fusion core and the rocket wide. Which board would have a wider range? Would the dual fusion core rocket 9 function just as well in 1-3 ft? Trying to look for an all around board. Thanks!
Dustin Lang The RW is a Groveler for 1-3’ surf. The Rocket 9 is more of a daily Driver... I don’t recommend it for Groveling. It has too much rocker. Not even in the Dual Core.
Hi Noel, if I'm looking for more versatile options in FCS2 range for RW what do you think between FCS II Matt Biolos PC Carbon and FCS II AM PC? First seems to fit more for such a low entry rocker groveler, second is AM and by some reviews it seems to fit quite well, however it has much more rake.
Gábor Ádám I think the MB fins will suit the RW good in some peaky beach break waves. The AM fins have excellent built in speed with the rake but it will pivot a bit slower. It’s really up to you on how you want to surf that board. Another set of fins to consider for the RW is the AM Twin + Trailer. They are very upright and go insane in the RW.
Hey Noel, I'm looking at the Rocket Wide, JS Psycho Nitro and the Mayhem Psycho Killer. I just sold my awesome V3 Rocket 6ft 34.5 ltrs as I need a bit more foam- I'm 85kgs and surf mostly beach breaks near Sydney from waist to head high. Can you recommend between these as a board that will perform with about 36-37 ltrs. Thanks Geoff
Hi Noel, not sure whether you have ridden the CIS Groveller 4. I have one in a 5'9 at 30.5lts, I am 51yo 5'7 and 72 kg's. I was wondering what are the differences between the Rocket Wide, Grovellor 4 and the PJHP? DOes this board ride much differently to them? Thanks in advance. Ricky
Ricky Cole The #4 Groveler is pretty sick... I liked that board. It’s been a while since I rode it but it carries good speed and shreds small pockets. Not sure if I like it better compared to PJHP or RW...
@@surfnshowreviews7777 Thanks Noel. yes, it's a great board. If there is not a major difference between the 4 and the Rocket Wide I will stick with it for a while. Love watching your reviews! Rick
Thanks for those reviews you are the best ! I sell out 3 boards to renovate my quiver, and now I have these boards: (I am 6,2 185 lbs in shape.) 6,2 rook 15, to difficult to make turns, feels like good board only for experts, but solid. 5,11 gamma helium beach model ( not hp ) 5,9 go fish for small days and to feel a good fish I think it’s enougt for 1-8 feet but... I want another board and feeling to surf small waves 2-4 feet when I look for fun not to practise my surfing like the gamma surfing.what would you recommend me? Rocket wide, holy grail, neck beard 2
great review. i like that you cover a lot with fins how they surf , keeps it fresh ever time a watch a review of you with a new board. It feels that i learn something new every time :)
Hi Noel, great review. I’m 6’1, 76kg. I use for most of my board 30L. I’m just about to buy one, thinking about this dimensions. What do you recomend? 5’8 19 1/2 2 1/2 30.3L. Thanks a million fin Ireland
Hey Noel. Once again you have educated me, have watched every review & have a quiver full of your favourites so thank you! Quick question regarding the your recommendation for choppy beach break wind swell (2/3ft) waves in Queensland East Coast Australia? Have heard u say in the past (and agree) epoxy boards do move around a bit more so thinking PU for sure. My level is sometimes intermediate & weigh 160 pounds height 5’10”. Thinking OG or Rocket Wide? Have a fever and holy grail plus puddle jumper in CW - love em all but don’t like the lost stealth (in PU). Any info would be awesome! P.S how about a review on JS Air17x?
Hey Noel thanks for the review, getting this board bcuz of you!! What size should I get? 6’2 175 lbs intermediate surfer. I was looking at the 5’10 with 33 liters, what do you think? Looks great under your feet man.
coming in a little late here, Noel but was wondering if you could help this 44yr old get his sizing right for this sled. Living in SC and surfing mostly T-St and State Park/Rivi mixed in. Im 5’9 x 167lbs dry and consider myself an intermediate but just love getting out there and trying to better my surf each time. All my past boards have been PU but trying something new sounds exciting and just might get me even more stoked to surf. Could you share you opinion on sizing for both constructions if possible. Thx in advance!!
Hi Noel, I love your reviews, they are very useful! What are the differences between the Rocket Wide and Sampler? for an beginner - intermediate surfer that rides small to medium waves? Cheers!
Miguel Marquina Yes it is for me... it fits in the pocket better of the small waves being 5’5” as opposed to the Sampler being 5’7”. Both boards are sick though...
If you want a highly responsive short board, that feels "alive" between turns, get the spine ten, it is worth the money. I'm 5'10" 175lb and 51yrs and ride the 5'9" It's my favorite board when surf is 2-6' on the face, which is most of the time in So Cal. Good luck!
As always very good and professional review! I’m myself having hard time to choose between the rocket wide and the lost California twin... I’m from Israel and most of the time the waves are week and between 1-4 foot... thanks for the help... I’m now surfing with the lost beanbag
Hi Noel, I’ve had the Rocket Wide in spine tek for a few months now with the FCS II AM Tri Fins in large. I’m experiencing feeling like I’m getting stuck at the top of the wave when I’m paddling into it a wave on this board like I don’t on my other boards. In addition, I don’t feel the liveliness in and out of turns. I’m wondering if I went a touch to big on the board or the fins. I’m 5’7” 155lbs and got the 5’7” RW in Spine Tek. I’m thinking it might be the fins for me. I normally like a bigger drivier fin like you do. Any thoughts or suggestions? Thanks for any advice! Love the videos!
@jason g I think you got a bit too much volume with the board, especially with epoxy. That might be the issue, I've had the same problem in the past and it was because I had too much volume and it was felt in the thickness of the rails.
Hi Noel, great review as always. I got the RW Spintek a few months back and love it. I gotta say I catch about 50% more waves in any given session even when the waves are not great. I am 5'10 145 (+ 7ish lbs with a 4/3 wetsuit) and went for the 5'10 (34.5 liters) as it was what was available at the time. While this extra foam is super helpful easily getting me in to waves and less noticable in bigger surf, I kind of feel that in the small stuff it feels a bit bulky. So, was thinking about downsizing a bit but not wanting to go too low on the volume. Thoughts on the 5'10 vs 5'9? I am hoping to keep the "ease of catching waves" and remove the "bulkiness" :)
Thanks for this nice review Noel 👌 I got a CI fever in 5’11 (27,9L) which works great in the 2-3 feet but Its harder for me to really generate speed down the line in the 1ft range, and the paddle can be sometimes exhausting ahah Should I take the rocket wide with the same volume than my shortboard you Reckon, like the 5’7 (even a bit more than the fever) Or add a bit a volume, like the 5,8. Im 1’88 tall and 75 kilos, intermediate plus level. Thank you for your advise !!
A lerpi The 5’7” is roughly 1 liter more compared to your Fever... you should be good. That extra 1 liter will float roughly 10 more pounds. The 5’8” at 30.3 liters seems to big. I would go 5’7”!!!!
Hi Noel Thanks for you reviews, always helped to me. I have the Seaside machado firewire 5´8 34l and works amazing in small waves,my best board in smal surf ever. Im intermediate average surf, but im in god shape. Im really interested in the Rocket Wide,to get more vertical turns,in 6" size waves Do you thin i can get the 5,9 32l ...or is better the 5´10 33,5 l for me im afraid to fell a lot diferent,to much sensitive in a more power waves Really thans for your work...and Good waves for everybody
Hi Noel. How would you compare this vs the Sampler in punchy low tide beachies and softer say high tide and which do you reckon goes best in lumpy surf? Appreciated.
Ben Post Both boards will go good in those conditions. The RW will fit in tighter pockets and do tight turns in the hook too. The Sampler will be bit faster down the line.
Hey Noel, great reviews like always. Between the RW, disco cheater or modern 2 what would you recommend best for 1 to 3 ft surf a little bit on the fatter side at times. Im cutting back, carving, snaps and reos pretty consistently in larger surf on sci fi and frk atm. Or is there another board youd recommend? Also im 5ft10 and 65kg so board size im also not sure about with small wave boards
Jake Formosa RW offers more performance surfing compared to the DC or M2. The DC and M2 are faster and paddle better though. I like the RW for you due to you being so tall and lightweight. Another board I like for Groveling is the Astro POP.
Jake Formosa Size wise... get one roughly the same liters as your HPSB. I recommend EPS for 1-4’ waves. If your worried about the AStro POP being to short then go with the RW in Spinetek
Hey Noel! Your reviews r the best!! Im an inter/beg surfer. 76k-77k Though about the Rocket in 5.10 or the seaside in 5.6 or the black baron in 5.9😅 what do u think will be the best groveler surfboard for me? Thnks
Sick looking board!! 🔥 Noel, thanks for another 10/10 review. You can really see the passion in your eyes when you talk about surfing, love it. And you absolutely destroyed these little nuggets YEEW 🤙
Hey Noel, great review as always. I've been learning a lot with your videos. Btw, wich fins you've choose for that 3 4' f surf? Do you think that any other fins could fix it? Maybe speed control series... Thank you again
Aloha Noel, Amazing review once again! I have the Pod Mod, but I was wondering how you would compare the rocket wide to it? Thinking of adding rocket wide to quiver, but wondering if it’s another small wave board... mahalo!
G K PM grovels better in 1-3’ surf. The RW is sharper in the pocket and better in the lip due to more rail line and a bit more of a performance outline
Miguel Marquina Sseaside will paddle better and carry more down the line speed. RW is excellent performance in the pocket with tight wraps. Seaside grovels way better
Hi Noel, can you please share your thoughts on which is the board you would choose between the new Fishbeard and the Rocket Wide? thanks mate , luv your shows
ROBERT TEAL My choice is the NB2... its faster and a bit more radical and it pushes my surfing. Check out our Surfboard War between the RW and NB2. You can see the difference between the two pretty easily.
Brody Skelton Pod Mod is a bit shorter... so less rail line for bottom turns and rail turns. The RW is a bit smoother... both boards are epic. I prefer the RW.
Sorry, back again. I'm on the verge of buying a Gremlin but was curious how you felt it compared to the Rocket Wide and the Sampler. I've ridden both of these boards: Rocket Wide seemed to hang up/push back when dropping in (relative to my style), not an issue with Sampler and great range, just lacks tail rocker so does not go vertical well, flat/skatey feel. Do like better than the Rocket Wide. So how would you compare the Gremlin to these two boards? As always, thanks for the the feedback.
Water Dog Gremlin is a Groveler... the RW and Sampler are more like small wave performance board. Not a good comparison... I like the Gremlin for 1-4’ surf and it does pocket surfing pretty good. Very fast down the line but not a lot of tail rocker.
So the ultra joe goes better when the surf gets above 3 feet? I know I shouldn’t compare the rocket wide and the ultra joe but I really like these two boards and was leaning towards the rw until you said it started to struggle above 3 ft and I remember you saying the uj went good from 1-4+
The Overstoker Watch the Surfboard Wars on the RW... I pushed it some bigger surf and it went better. The RW and UJ will shred 1-4’ surf... beyond that I say get on a Fever.
Hi noel, I have the Merrick 2 plus 1 fins you recommended in my rocket wide. Not convinced with that setup. Could I try a normal size fin in the rear? Out would that definitely not work?
Ripping like always. Perfect summer groveler! Great review Noel! Great feedback on the foot positioning when going from super short summer boards to our normal everyday drivers. So true. Happy Friday my man! My Futures Tech 1's are on the way.
Thanks for your hard work with these reviews Noel, I’m 5’9 180lbs beginner/intermediate, can build speed down the line no huge turns yet currently riding Roberts dream catcher plus 55l past year here in southern nj was wondering if 44l in this board is too big of a jump for upcoming spring/summer, torn between this and the NB2 but thought I should progress more before going NB2, if you point me in right direction I’d appreciate it so much, thanks brother
Great review as usual Noel! I'm an inch over 6ft, and around 150 pounds. I'm 16 years old so keep in mind I will probably still grow a bit more. My normal shortboard is a 5'10 ½ Fever from Channel Islands, and about 26.4 liters. I recently picked up a 5'8 Rocket Wide, and its about 30.3 liters. I took for a few surfs already, and it feels much to big for me. Not in length but in the thickness and how buoyant it is. I'm pretty skinny for my height, and the Rocket Wide feels thick enough to the point of where I feel like I can't whip through turns very well. It just feels very big under my feet. I'm going to trade it in for a shorter version of the Rocket Wide, but was wanting your opinion on what size you think I should downsize to. I was thinking a 5'6 or a 5'7. What are your thoughts? I would appreciate it if you would respond. Thanks!
Noel, Any reports about the Rocket Wide as a quad? Wondering if I should order it with 3 or 5 fin boxes? And what's your opinion about how much having empty Futures Fins boxes affects the water flow under the board and thus the ride of the board? I noticed that neither you or any other high level surfer seem to use the Futures Fins filler inserts to fill any empty fin box gaps. Have you ever tried the box fillers?
caleb odam I haven’t heard of anyone trying the RW as a Quad. I am sure it’s fun though.... if your a big Quad guy then I would go 5 fin boxes. My thoughts are not on the boxes being empty and affecting water flow. I am sure there are some issues there but not too worried about that. For me it’s more about flex in the tail.... 3 fin boxes will minimize tail flex and 5 fin boxes even more. I don’t think I realized how much it affects the flex until I tried some glass on fins. I say have fun and if you like Quads then you should try it and if your worried about water flow then use the inserts when your not rocking the Quad set up.
Hi Noel, another Great well articulated review ! I have been riding the rocket wide in Spine Tech around Asia for month's, It's an awesome little board in 1 - 3 Agree it does not have enough rail line in the water for 4 ft up ish but don't think it's meant too, it definitely feels like a small wave pocket performer than can still grovel also when the waves are lacking, My question would be what do you think would be a good Daily Driver to overlap the Rocket Wides higher end Like a HS Holy Grail or a Pyzel Phantom without going into OG Flyer territory ? Love to see you do the New JS Black Box 3 In Hi Fi Epoxy tech too, Cheer's Mate !
Beach Shak The HG and Phantom are both incredible. The Phantom is so easy to paddle and surf as a HPSB. I love HS FF technology too. I would say both the HG and Phantom will overlap in the OG Flyer territory but they all surf a little different.
Noel you have really got me thinking about the fin setups on this board.late last year I bought a 5,8 in spinetek(30.3 litres) and I had originally borrowed the polyurethane 5,8 as a demo before I made the purchase.right away the spinetek felt faster and more responsive but had less bite and hold than the PU and at first I was thinking I should have got the 5,7 in spinetek but then I tried these 2 side fins that were on my longboard with the blue almerrickfin(large)(fcs1)in centre and think I've gotten back the hold I was after.(the 2 side fins were considerably larger than the standard largethruster fins but smaller than a twin.and now I'm thinking because this is such a loose board anyway, you have the 2+1 setup.if you could get a 3rd fin the same size as the twins it may really increase the drive and power off the turns.seems like a lot of fin in the water but I don't think many people have tried it.maybe in 2 ft plus surf.worth a try?
Noel, can you identify what part of the board makes for the feeling of a board you can pump with (i.e. you move your feet and board is controlled by you not the other way around) and a board that you cannot. I find I move very rapidly and need a board that I can pump and move around quickly? 6'3" at 220 lbs. My go to is a board that is 6'4"ish at 38-41 liters. How much does the width affect vs. over volume?
Vinny P Good question... volume is a guide that compliments Dimensions of a board. Some surfers think Volume dictates but I think board designer and board design dictate dimensions and volume. Usually a board maker will have their stock DIMS real close to what is ideal for each board model. If I do a custom I will always look at the Manufactures website and use the Stock DIMS as a guide and maybe go a little wider/narrower by 1/4” according to length and thickness. My point here is don’t let the DIMS dictate completely or Volume dictate completely how you order a custom but use them together. Now I am not sure I understand the question you have about moving your feet around. Please ask me again and reword it so I can try to understand your question. Sorry
some boards feel like you can move your feet and the board moves right away sometimes i ride boards that seem sluggish to change and are harder to pump down the line. i am wondering if this responsiveness is based on board narrowness or more rocker or less volume? for me its hard to think of riding a board narrower than 20.5 but maybe thats what i need to look at?
Vinny P Ok I got what your saying. Boards with continuous rocker are going to be looser and more responsive compared to a board with flat rocker under the belly. A wider board will also tighten things up a bit and sometimes using a upright fin will loosen it up a bit and make it a bit more responsive.
Do you have any reviews of using the same board and showing what symptoms a board that is too small, too big and just right will produce? Also, do you know of any similar review channels on youtube or instagram for surfers my size 6'3" 220lbs , shoot the only pro I know of my height is owen wright and he is a beast, plus I out weigh him. All the boards that are "standard" for my size volume are like 7'0, I believe a wave has a max board length.
Vinny P I am working on a review right now that will talk about some of these symptoms. Just type in Surfboard reviews in the You Tube search button and you find other board reviewers. One board you should check out is the CI Weirdo Ripper. Great performance board thats short and full of volume. Love that board.
I’m 6’2, can taller surfers ride boards the size of the one reviewed in this video? For a guy my size would you recommend this board longer, or would the extra length take away from the performance?
Hi Noel, I was hoping you could give me your 2 cents between the RW and the Sharpeye Modern 2. I've got my eyes set on one of these boards and I'd really love to hear which one you prefer.
Emilio Carrasco Both boards are sick. The RW has a more high performance feel to it and it can do tight turns in the pocket. The RW is still my favorite 1-2’ Groveler to date. The Modern Two has a Groveler feel to it with a lot of foam forward. Good speed and rail to rail surfing but no match for the RW when it comes to performance surfing.
Hi Noel, i m looking to replace my Uber driver for small waves 1-4ft. I catch often in the nose with it when it ger a bit steeper, problem i Never have with dominator2. I m maybe a bit front foot oriented. Looking astropop, rnf96 or rocket wide swallow, do you know if one of those would not be catchy? Thanks++
Hey Noel, great review! Can’t wait to get my hands on those proto future fins in the near future. I am torn between the neckbeard 2 and the rocket wide, both in spine tek. I have actually tried both boards as demos but didn’t have the ideal waves to really feel out the boards. I surf in Santa Cruz where the majority are mushier waves. I have a PU OG flyer as a daily driver (I’m getting spinetek partially for better durability). What did you like and dislike about each board? since you were able to try both in ideal conditions. I’m looking for the board I’ll get the most out of, that I can take out in most conditions leading up to the days I should use my flyer.
Kainalu The RW has excellent speed and good pocket surfing in 1-3’ surf. For a Groveler in 1-3’ surf the RW is unmatched for performance for me. The NB2 can do it all very well... the 1 board quiver. It’s the best Daily Driver I have ridden to date. 1-6’ surf this NB2 shines. Good speed, performance, airs, sick off the bottom. You cannot go wrong with either. Both boards excel in mushy waves. Cheers
Recently bought a Lost Puddle Fish in 5'8" 34.25 L and paddles super easy for me and it goes in s fat/slow waves amazingly. . Would a rocket wide in 33 L be good addition for slightly more walled up waves or should i also go with ~34L on that. In good/ bowled up small to medium waves i ride a 31L weirdo ripper. Thanks for the video. (I'm 5'10 and about 177lb)
@@surfnshowreviews7777 I bought the 5'10" today. Thanks a lot for the review video and reply, it helped my decision. Its actually a good board for our "good days"/ better days here in Florida. Surfed it on some hurricane swell today and super happy with it.
@@surfnshowreviews7777 Ive had time now to get used to the RW (34L). For some reason, it does not go rail to rail nearly as well for me as my Weirdo Ripper (31.7L). Could that be the extra double concave and vee in the tail on the Weirdo Ripper giving me that better rail to rail, turning capability? I noticed my Dumpster Diver has similar bottom as the RW and similar feel off the bottom. Thanks for any feedback.
Hey Noel. Awesome Review as usual. Picked up a RW last week. After a few surfs I can say that your Review is spot on. Very easy, user friendly board.. for sure! Was looking for s suggestion on fin. What fin do you suggest.. Im 190lbs 6'3 with FCSII. Looking for a Tri-fin that maximizes drive to allows this board to truly be a "rocket".. Thoughts?
cheeehuuuuuu! Love Surf'n Show! Hey surfboard question for ya Noel. I'm 210lbs and looking for a shorter summer board that fits in the 2-3+ foot surf of north county sd. How much thicker in the dims from stock do you think is reasonable? Generally speaking.
Noel awesome reviews!! How does the Rocket Wide compare head to head with the Uber Driver?? I'm in Fl so we don't have the push your waves have. Out of the two boards which do you feel might have the better/quicker performance feel? Also will you be doing any DHD reviews? Specifically the DNA.
I will be in Huntington in a couple of weeks. Im bringing two of the 4 board choices I have. which would be best for Huntington? Uber Driver Physco Killer OG Flyer Or Rocket Wide
Hey Noel, if by chance you found my comment, really loved the review and I can say enough how much progress you've done in your videos. Impressive ! Any recommandation for a similar board in 2021 ? (maybe for something in just a bit bigger wave like 5') Thanks for the help !
@@surfnshowreviews7777 Hey Noel, thanks for your answer. I'm hesitating between the phantom and the RW. Those boards seems to cover the same range of wave, yet surfing completely different. With the rocket wide looking better in 1-2' surf and the phantom in 4-6' wave. I kind of surf "not so good/mushy" waves, around 2' to 4' most of the time, so both boards could fit my needs. I'm looking for a board to have fun, so super user friendly with ton of speed. Not too much into extra performance. Both your reviews seems to make the board shines, but I thinks it's because of your incredible skills to adapt to any boards ... I'm kinda lost, what would you advise to an intermiediate surfer, weekend warriors ? Thanks !
@@kekoustuts3748 I suggest the RW in Spinetek for 2-4’ mushy waves. For extra speed run the Al Merrick Twin + Trailer. They are very upright so the will pivot quickly too.
@@surfnshowreviews7777 Thank you so much for your help, this is really valuable to me ! Thanks so much. Already own those fins, so it's perfect ! One last question to be sure. I'm 6' tall for 166lbs. Thanks to your video, I should probably go around 31L, you think it's good or I should add a little more volume ? Thanks !! Have a nice day !
Great review and definitely getting this board, but stuck between sizes. 5.9 vs. 5.10 - thoughts? 167lbs. 6’ and currently surfing the pod mod 5.6.. thanks
Not sure if you will see this but I am getting ready to order a rocket wide here pretty soon. I am usually surfing huntington pier or state beach so 2-6 foot usually. I am 5'8 1/2 and 130 pounds. I dont want to get it too small because i want to grow into it a little bit. would a 5'8 be a good size with stock dimensions?
Surf n Show Reviews this will actually be my first shortboard/groveler. I surfed the no brainer decently well today and it was at 29.9 L for a 5’7 stock. Boards seem to be somewhat similar, so the 5’8 Rocket wide would be 30.2 for the stock dims
For all those wondering, just hear Noel's words about it being the best 1-3 ft groveler, I would agree. Just got this board in Spine-Tek which is ridiculously good. I surfed it twice so far in 2-4 ft waves at (Beacons in SD) that are kind of rolly with steep inside sections. It is crazy fun to surf because it generates an insane amount of speed through all of the flat spots. Speed is the key to everything we do as surfers and this board has it in spades. I was smiling like crazy at how great it is. I had the CI AM2's in it and they are a lethal combo together. I would also say go Spine-Tek if you've never surfed it because of the way that tech launches you out of rebounds and turns also enhances the speed characteristics of the board. I have a Holy Grail, CI Fever, and now this Rocket Wide and those are pretty much the best 3 boards I have ever surfed. Times are great for us all and with Noel's stellar reviews, it's a win-win for all. For all the SoCal friends, get ready, some nice SW is filling in and let the fun begin. :)
Hey dude thanks for the informative comment! I'm seriously thinking about getting a rocketwide... is there any reason you'd choose to ride your holygrail or Fever in 1-3ft surf over the rocketwide?
No worries my pleasure. Honestly, all 3 of those boards are so good I can have fun on any of them. My Fever is a PU, but it still goes great in even smaller stuff. I rode the Grail today in 2-4 foot surf, but just as easily could have taken the RW. The RW is so much fun, I think you should definitely get one. I've only ridden it twice, but is a magical board. I will most likely surf the Fever 3 foot plus when the waves have some punch. All 3 of those boards are so much fun, you could just about pull any of them off the rack and surf them in 1-4 foot surf and have an amazing time. I am going to take the RW out this Friday in some smaller stuff, but I was quite surprised at how well it went in some solid four footers. I really feel like I have dream quiver now. I love all 3 of those boards equally. I think that is the goal. If you get a RW, you will not regret it. Good luck and post back how it goes if you get one.
Thanks for the quick reply legend! Yeah i'm honestly tossing up between RW and a podmod... I'm pretty much the same height and weight as noel so its sick seeing him in action and although he says he likes the RW best in my opinion he looks better on the pod mod! You ever ridden a pod?
LOVE your reviews Noel! I wanted to try out the Beta AM2...went to Futures site but not available. Is that where they are going to sell them? You liked them? Different ride than the Honeycomb?
PremEye Yes that is where you will buy them. Very different feel compared to the Honeycomb. They have a bit more flex, so they are very alive feeling under foot and will give you more speed out of turns. I would call over to Futures ASAP and get a set of those over the phone. Cheers
Miguel Marquina Both are good... it’s s preference... I like both. The JF Generation is a bit more upright compared to the AM2 Prototype so it pivots faster. The JF felt a tad stiffer too even though they are both are roughly a 8 on the ride number.
Does the RW have better low end than the Pyzel phantom? It seems like the RW would sit right between a pyzel gremlin and phantom (2 boards I have experience with).
These reviews are superb. Some of the most informative, intelligent surf content on the internet. Keep it up!
Great job as always Noel. You are hands down the best board coach on the web. Its easy to tell how much thought and effort you put into creating these videos. If anyone should be able to do this for a career, you're the guy.
Gary Conley That would be the dream job for my brother and I.. cheers for the kind words.
The way you bring all this information across really helps me to understand more and more how surfboards work. Everything gets explained so simpel so it really helps to gain knowledge. I learn a lot with every video that I watch. Thank you Noel, I really appreciate that!
Great review Noel.
How does the rocket wide compare to Chilli Bv2
The outline seems similiar
And which of the boards do you prefer
Thank you
@@guy-jayb3909 The RW has a sharper outline.
Thanks.
RW and Storms are pretty similar in 1-3’ surf. I think the RW Squash might be a little faster.
I also like the NB2… it’s fast and pivots quickly too
Ripping! How would you compare this to the firewire mash up?
The RW out performs the Mashup in the pocket. The RW draws more high performance lines and makes the Mash Up fell like a cruiser.
The Mashup paddles a little better, it feels looser underfoot and might carry a little more speed in 1-2’ surf. The Mashup wave range is best in 1-3’ surf.
Perfect question 😂 why I came here
Looking for my next small wave board to replace my Pizel Gremlin 5'5" (28.2L) which doesn't work so well for me.
Alexandre Zanoni Go 5’5” RW in Spinetek

Morning Noel, currently have a rocket 9 thats running out of life. Need some input on if I should get another rocket 9 (really enjoyed the board), or if i should get a rocket wide. Would be used as my daily driver for 2-6 surf. Seems like you enjoyed the wide more, but can it handle those 6 foot days like the 9 does? Main concern would be the flatter entry rocker for steeper faces. Currently ride my 9 as a 2+1
Christian Bondra The RW cannot handle 5-6’ surf very well. Maybe stick with the R9.... and ride it with the Twin +1. Cheers
Thanks!
Absolutely… get the AMT’s

Hi Noël, i was thinking of ordering this board custom, taking the 5'7 original dims and stretching it to 5'9 and adding a round tail. The Idea is to keep the easy paddling characteristic but widening the wave range to make it look more like a daily driver. Do you think it's a good Idea? Or would a nb3 would just better suit my need ?
For info i'm 5'10, 150lbs and low intermediate.
Just go NB3
Hey Noel im going for the stock 6'2 which is 6'2 x 21 x 2 7/8 = 40.7 L.I usually go 2 3/4 on the thickness.Im unable to see the board before ordering unfortunately but do you think the rails will be big and boxy or more med-low performance type rails. My concern on boxy rails is the inability to bury the rail on the wave face. Please advise what you think.
Ryan The Rock It will be good... the rail is somewhere between the two rails you mention.
Hi Noel, I have a Holy Grail. Can you compare both? I am thinking on adding a Rocket Wide to my quiver for the 1-3 feet waves.
That a good 2 board quiver… the RW is faster in smaller waves and it will grovel better
Thanks!
White Tiger is a way better Groveler
Volume question:
I’m in good shape, experienced, and I surf 6 days a week on Oahu (North and South).

Would be interesting to see which board he will ride then.
Great idea kinjuk15.. I agree it would be great to see!
just ordered a custom spine-tek RW. thanks for all the reviews noel. surfnshow is my first stop when researching a new ride. 🤙. curious on your thoughts for a 2+1 setup for futures. what would you recommend?
@Matt Cotton Did you get it in a swallow or squash tail ?
Would this board be suitable for beginner/intermediate?
Miguel Marquina Good stuff bro and yes shredding a Carver is so fun and I think it can help your surfing technique too. Cheers bro
Hey Noel...torn between the Pyzel Astro POP and RW...which board will be a better overall option? In terms of ability which you reckon offers more?...sweet channel bro🤙🏼
Ryan S.H RW is more high performance in the pocket. The AP grovels better, paddles better, and it’s faster down the line.
Hey Noel love the reviews have a question after riding both what board would you say is a better groveler between the rocket wide and the lost hydra? Or what conditions would you recommend one in more than the other?
Hydra is a way better Groveler in 1-2’ mushy surf. The RW is more of a small wave performance board best in 1-5’ surf.
Hi Noel,
Getting the 6’0 squash tail as a mushy 1-3ft groveller and I’d love to give a 2+1 setup a go to give more speed in the smaller, weak stuff however I’m not sure if it will work with the squash tail compared to the swallow? Also what would be your 2+1 recommendation for futures? Sick review as always🤙🏽

@@surfnshowreviews7777 Thanks for getting back and for the advice!

Hey Noel thanks for the review, getting this board bcuz of you!! What size should I get? 6’2 175 lbs intermediate surfer. I was looking at the 5’10 with 33 liters, what do you think? Looks great under your feet man.
Nick Silver Too much volume at 33 liters. I like the 5’8 or 5’9” for you. Your liters should be 31-32 at most... so 5’8” in Spinetek or 5’9” PU.

I’m myself having hard time to choose between the rocket wide and the lost California twin... I’m from Israel and most of the time the waves are week and between 1-4 foot... thanks for the help... I’m now surfing with the lost beanbag
CA Twin paddles better and carries way more speed in mushy waves.
Jason G Try some other fins that you like in other boards first then we can talk about how much volume this board has.
Go 5’9” or else the liters will still be too much
@@surfnshowreviews7777 Thanks!!
Thanks for this nice review Noel 👌
I got a CI fever in 5’11 (27,9L) which works great in the 2-3 feet but Its harder for me to really generate speed down the line in the 1ft range, and the paddle can be sometimes exhausting ahah
Should I take the rocket wide with the same volume than my shortboard you Reckon, like the 5’7 (even a bit more than the fever)
Or add a bit a volume, like the 5,8.
I would go 5’7”!!!!
thanks mate !!
Hi Noel
Thanks for you reviews, always helped to me.
I have the Seaside machado firewire 5´8 34l and works amazing in small waves,my best board in smal surf ever.
Im intermediate average surf, but im in god shape.
Im really interested in the Rocket Wide,to get more vertical turns,in 6" size waves
Do you thin i can get the 5,9 32l ...or is better the 5´10 33,5 l for me
im afraid to fell a lot diferent,to much sensitive in a more power waves
Really thans for your work...and
Good waves for everybody
Jacobosuarezcernuda Sc How tall are you and how much do you weigh?
@@surfnshowreviews7777

Jacobosuarezcernuda Sc Go 5’9” at 32 liters.
Does the rocket wide or Astro pop have more short feel and characteristics?
RW has a HPSB feel
@@surfnshowreviews7777 Hey Noel! Thanks what size would you recommend with the astro pop and RW? Cheers
Thnks
Ore Tabak Lahav Seaside
Sick looking board!! 🔥
Noel, thanks for another 10/10 review.

GGN Maybe some other fins will go a little better. Maybe something with less rake..... more upright.
@@surfnshowreviews7777 thanks for the feedback! Cheers
Aloha Noel,
Amazing review once again!
Noel how does the rocket wide compare to the untitled. I know the ride differently but are they designed for the same type of surf conditions??
michael koch The Untitled is more of a Daily Driver. It can grovel pretty good but I like it better 2-6’ surf. The RW is best in 1-3’+.
I'm torn between to boards. What paddle's better between the rocket wide and the Pyzel Gremlin. Cheers keep up the good work
Steven Press Gremlin paddles better.... both boards are sick and you will be stoked on either.
seaside or rocket wide in the smaller surf?
Miguel Marquina Sseaside will paddle better and carry more down the line speed. RW is excellent performance in the pocket with tight wraps. Seaside grovels way better
Hi Noel, can you please share your thoughts on which is the board you would choose between the new Fishbeard and the Rocket Wide?
thanks mate , luv your shows
ROBERT TEAL My choice is the NB2... its faster and a bit more radical and it pushes my surfing. Check out our Surfboard War between the RW and NB2. You can see the difference between the two pretty easily.
What’s the difference between this and the pod mod? / what do you prefer?
Thanks
Johnny Pp What doesn’t feel good about it? Too loose, too stiff???
Ripping like always. Perfect summer groveler! Great review Noel! Great feedback on the foot positioning when going from super short summer boards to our normal everyday drivers. So true. Happy Friday my man! My Futures Tech 1's are on the way.
SoCal Boys Stiked you will love those RTM Tech 1 Funs in your new Rocket Wide and Fever. Oh yea they will go mental in your HG too!!!
For sure. Grabbed the last pair off of Amazon? Keep shralping my man.
Zac Wojnar I recommend 36-38 liters for you. The RW will go good in Summer waves.
Sounds good brother! Thanks so much!
Thanks!
Nate Cox That’s way to big for you... I like the liters on your Fever. Try to stay roughly the same.... 5’6” sounds about right
Noel, Any reports about the Rocket Wide as a quad?
Aiden Hauser You will want one a bit longer... I’m thinking 5’10
Surf n Show Reviews thanks!
you are really good at your job here Noel and only getting better. Awesome!
Brian Newport Cheers
Hi Noel, I was hoping you could give me your 2 cents between the RW and the Sharpeye Modern 2. I've got my eyes set on one of these boards and I'd really love to hear which one you prefer.
Emilio Carrasco Both boards are sick. The RW has a more high performance feel to it and it can do tight turns in the pocket. The RW is still my favorite 1-2’ Groveler to date.
The Modern Two has a Groveler feel to it with a lot of foam forward. Good speed and rail to rail surfing but no match for the RW when it comes to performance surfing.
@@surfnshowreviews7777 Thanks!
Aloha Noel,
Amazing review! How would you compare this to the pod mod? Mahalo in advance~
G K PM grovels better in 1-2’ surf... better paddler too. The RW will out performs the PM top to bottom and in the pocket. Cheers
Hi Noel, i m looking to replace my Uber driver for small waves 1-4ft. I catch often in the nose with it when it ger a bit steeper, problem i Never have with dominator2. RW Swallow sounds good.

Cheers
Recently bought a Lost Puddle Fish in 5'8" 34.25 L and paddles super easy for me and it goes in s fat/slow waves amazingly. . @@surfnshowreviews7777 Ive had time now to get used to the RW (34L). For some reason, it does not go rail to rail nearly as well for me as my Weirdo Ripper (31.7L). Great review Noel as always ! How does it compare to the Sharp Eye Modern 2? I was about to pull the trigger on a 5’6 M2 in E2 tech

How does the Rocket Wide compare head to head with the Uber Driver?? I'm in Fl so we don't have the push your waves have. Out of the two boards which do you feel might have the better/quicker performance feel?
Also will you be doing any DHD reviews? Specifically the DNA.
Gary Allred For your waves I like the CI RW or the Lost PJHP. I think the UD might not project as well because the tail is not super wide.

Uber Driver
Physco Killer

I like the Driver 2.0, Phantom, and Fever. The Phantom is most user friendly in 3-7’ surf.
Alexander Smith Is the 5’8” liters close to what your used to riding?
Surf n Show Reviews this will actually be my first shortboard/groveler. I surfed the no brainer decently well today and it was at 29.9 L for a 5’7 stock. Boards seem to be somewhat similar, so the 5’8 Rocket wide would be 30.2 for the stock dims
Alexander Smith Sounds about right... if the No Brainer felt good then you are good to go on the RW
Surf n Show Reviews awesome and you think the stock dims should be good? 5’8 19 1/2 2 1/2 and 30.2L, I am 5’8 1/2 130lb and still going to grow a bit.
Alexander Smith Go 5’8” for now

Hi Noel, How come you'r riding th RW with less volume than the fever ? Thanks for your work
vini ruemel2 When I did the Fever review I weighed 170lbs and now I weigh 160lbs. Since I lost 10lbs I dropped roughly 1 Liter of foam.
SoCal Boys Epic comments... so stoked you found some sick sleds!!! You got 3 nuggets for sure!!! Cheers
Yes I did my friend...many thanks and keep up the amazing work. Yew!
Cheers
Hey PremEye, check again they should be live on the site.
Thanks Brother! Looking forward to the Phantom and Gremlin reviews!
Just ordered!
Hey Noel, why a flat fin in smaller surf rather than the V2 foil?
Miguel Marquina Both are good... it’s s preference... I like both. The JF Generation is a bit more upright compared to the AM2 Prototype so it pivots faster. The JF felt a tad stiffer too even though they are both are roughly a 8 on the ride number.
Does the RW have better low end than the Pyzel phantom? It seems like the RW would sit right between a pyzel gremlin and phantom (2 boards I have experience with).
Daily Flow Fitness Absolutely correct
