The tap dancing scene was actually done without any digital effects, they actually shot it during several magic hours for a few days in a row (after extensive rehearsals)

Danielle CG Naw, the romantic parts are good, but it's all about the ones at the beginning. Even the one at the beginning that clearly had absolutely nothing to do with the plot was amazing.

La La Land sounds like an absolute delight and I know I'll have a good time seeing it because I love those old school musicals and I think my husband might enjoy it as well. He introduced me to Singin' In The Rain while we were dating and I just fell in love with that movie. I introduced him to The Sound of Music and he liked it.

Dough represents Channel Awesome and after what happened behind the scence a few years ago with some producers, including Alison and Phelan, some people just have enough of that company. And its actually more dislike for the CEO Mike Mchaud than for the Walkers, but it gets mostly projected onto Doug since he's the face of the company. Not to forget them blowing the money they raised on Indigogo and that they never resolved the accusations of using that money that was supposed to go to new shows for personal enrichtment.

Justin Hurwitz wrote the music like months and months before the shooting, as you do for a musical, and Gosling spent something like 6 months practicing the pieces everyday so he could play it effortlessly for the shooting, also he learned more dancing styles to expand on what he already knew

I am so glad this movie is getting rave reviews and has been a decent hit at the box office. I'm a huge musical theater nerd, and I love a good love story, so I'm pretty much exactly this movie's target audience. The music in the trailer alone got me hyped for it. Who knew Emma Stone had such a beautiful singing voice?

sonicjrjr14 musicals have more than one song. And the song is typically used to further the plot. One song at the end of a movie doesn't constitute a musical.

I've expected great and I got perfect. This film is made for the big screen - so go and support it, everybody!
It's corny, then realistic, funny, then sad, uplifting, then depressing.
The most important bit, the music, is outstanding. The costumes, cinematography and acting are superb.
Also, the ending is just perfect for this particular plot.
I'm gonna watch this multiple times at the cinema.

  • @donnylurch4207
    @donnylurch4207 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Sorry to double post, but I forgot to mention my unusual theater experience. I saw this at a late showing, 2 months after it came out, so there was a very small crowd. However, there was this very engaged group of 20-something white girls who seemed very into it, laughing at all the funny parts and whatnot. As my date and I sat in our seats while the credits rolled, I saw these women going down the steps very happy, one of them dancing her way down, and then she danced through an aisle with one of her friends. So, if you're the kind of person that gets that excited by a good musical, you might want to catch this one before it's gone!

As a concert pianist with perfect pitch, I was able to tell that they cleaned up Ryan Gosling's piano playing A LOT from what we were seeing. He was definitely playing the songs that were being played, but definitely not as accurately. Seemed like he was doing a really, really good job considering he learned how to play piano FOR this movie, but there were at least a couple inconsistencies.
My guess is that he played along with a professional recording and they used the audio from the recording, so his playing syncs up and looks real, but he's not playing it quite as well as what we're hearing.
(Note: I don't consider this a flaw of the movie, as only someone in the audience with my level of expertise would be able to tell. It was a *wonderful* movie, probably my favorite of 2016 (although I still have to see a couple big ones like Moonlight and Arrival).

Having seen La La Land myself, I have to say that while it is incredibly well-made and well-acted, I could not get invested in the story or the characters. Not the fault of the movie at all, it's just me. I was reminded of Saturday Night Fever, another excellent movie that I was unable to get invested in. Same for Moonlight. After watching La La Land, I rewatched the 1999 South Park movie. Still my favourite musical movie.

I'm just pointing out the contradiction. Not judging it one way or the other. It's always amusing to me to hear a so-called critic use something as a criticism of a movie in one instance and dismiss the exact same thing in another. Especially since in the case of that moment...he made a HUGE deal out of it. In multiple videos as I recall. If he's come to see it as a baseless criticism then, good, I agree with him. But it's something that's worth calling out. at least in my opinion.

I genuinely do not like Musicals, and think that for the most part it's a terrible style to make a movie. But when it's used cleverly it comes off as a unique form of expression within a dramatic or parody film or whatever.
Citizen Kane, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind and La La Land are the best movies I've ever seen IMHO.

I saw it today (it opened yesterday in Italy) and I liked it fine, but... not in a 'best film of the year, 14 nominations, Best Picture Academy Award in the bag' way. If that makes sense... Also, Sebastian was a pretty big dick at the beginning, and I loved how he 'thawed out', THEN I read out that his going into John Legend's band was supposed to be him betraying his ambitions and I was annoyed... So according to the movie he was 100% in the right? WTF?
The movie at times also seemed to lift quite a bit from 'Les Parapluies De Cherbourg', in particular the ending...
Btw, apparently, the audition where Mia is giving that emotional performance and is rudely interrupted is an audition that happened in real life to Ryan Gosling.

There's actually a German word for a cross between talking and singing, its called: "Sprechstimme". Its sounds pretty bizarre when performed, the most famous example is probably this: th-cam.com/video/eOZH7qqlDkQ/w-d-xo.html

Just saw it today. While I still liked it better than Les Miserables and I admired it on a technical level, I couldn't get emotionally connected to this couple and I did not remember any of the songs once the movie was over (outside of the audition song). I wanted to like it and I wanted to connect with the dreamers aspiring for greater things, but the music actually was so dismissible that it took me out of it. The movie really needed a better songwriter.

I'm kinda hoping Moonlight wins Best Picture in a surprise upset, but I wouldn't be surprised at all if La La Land wins.
