Casio ProTrek PRW50 In Depth Review

  • This episode of the Good Timekeeping Show is an in-depth review of the Casio ProTrek PRW-50Y-1B, which uses Module 5620. These set-up instructions also apply to other versions of the PRW-50 and the PRW-60. The PRW-60 uses a different module (5578) but the features and functions are all the same.
    These watches each have Casio's Tough Solar power supply to keep the batteries charged automatically with normal exposure to normal lighting conditions during daylight hours. They have Multi Band 6 atomic time reception to automatically keep them set to the correct time every day. They have Casio's Triple Sensor Version 3, which includes a compass, a thermometer and a barometer, which is used both to show barometric pressure readings and to calculate altitude measurements. The Triple Sensor readings can be displayed in metric or non-metric values (meters/feet, C/F, etc.). The user can also record altitude readings for later review or to track altitude changes while climbing and hiking.
    These watches also feature five daily alarms, an hourly chime, a 24-hour stopwatch, a countdown timer (up to 60 minutes) and a World Time mode to display the time in another time zone anywhere in the world. The analog display features an hour, minute and second hand which can each move independently to quickly display time changes and to display other non-timekeeping functions. The hands will automatically re-align themselves for flawless operation on an ongoing basis, but a manual re-alignment function is also available.
    The watch in this video has a silicon "Dura Soft" watch band.
    In this video I go over all of the functions, features and set-up procedures for this watch. Again, these instructions are applicable for other PRW-50 and PRW-60 watches.
    In late 2019, when I recorded this video, the watch featured here was available through sellers in Japan via eBay. The price was somewhere in the range of $350 to $400 generally. Other versions of the PRW-50 and PRW-60 are also available, sometimes through U.S.-based retailers like Amazon with some prices ranging from $250 to over $500.

    Really like your channel! You have found good info that other channels haven’t. Diagnostics mode you have shown in some watches is cool. I was surprised this has a screw down crown like a dive watch, but given the crown’s functionality it makes sense.

    I bought this watch a while ago but with the black dial. I figured out some of the functions in the bulky manual but it were too much to read through. Now I found your video and now I know all the functions. I have missed the function pressing the light and the mode button at the same time to get the hands away from the display. And there were some other things also that I found out by looking at this video. Casio should hire you to do video-manuals for their watches instead of their messy booklet that they send with the watch. Thanks a lot for a great review.

    You can only adjust the declination manually. Yes, the compass might need calibration at time. However, declination depends on what part of the world you are in, and the unit does not have a GPS in order to determine this. But a great review, and I want one!

    I recently got the black dial version of this for max legibility. Has a great field watch look. One of the nice things I've not seen on other ProTreks is the ability to very easily change the strap. Bought some curved lugs pins so I could put it on a Nato. Only thing I wish this watch had is a snooze alarm.

    • @tobiasra1
      @tobiasra1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Cool. Though isn't black-on-white conventionally seen as the higher legibility in most cases, due to the contrast?
      That's my general impression from both screen (amoled and transreflective) and physical watch dial usage.
      I hear the night blacklight in the watch is not as effective on the white version.
      Have just ordered the white from Japan. Will see.

    I'm really digging your channel and all the square coverage. Recently I've been into the GMWB5000 series with the resin straps but I also really like the Pro Treks. Keep up the good work. As for the watch in the video, I love the color but the hands are too skinny for me.

    I wanted one of these but went with the 60 instead. Printed indices with no loom and the handset was a turn-off. I will admit I like the thinner hands on this off white dial more. Hopefully with the new bioplastic versions we will get a 51 with some loomed/raised numeric indicies.

    Just got one for a reasonable price off eBay. Satisfied with functions and everything, compass seems stable.
    But even on my above-average wrist, the watch feels way too large. Very happy I didn't get one of the even bigger similar 50mm Protreks.
    I think partial reason for it might be the snub of the wrist band sticking in shirt sleeves and such. Ordered a homogenous stainless steel band which should solve this problem to see if it feels better. 23mm stainless bands with quick adjust weren't exactly easy to find, but do exist.

    • @tobiasra1
      @tobiasra1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Could update with that this strategy worked perfectly. A slim stainless steel band made the thing perfectly wearable for any business. OPTIMAL size for me would be probably 2-3 millimeter less diameter still, but you can't have everything. Great watch.

    Hi, I hope this is the right place to send this. I have the Casio Pro Trek prw-50y-1bjf. When I first got the watch it tried to relieve the atomic signal but could not. Since then I have been unable to turn the auto receive on. When I rotate the button it says off but will not show on no matter which way I turn it. Is there something else I need to do? Thanks for any help..

    • @dianewade5342

      Wanted to update this. I had something about the barometric pressure digital screen interfering with the RC reading and this is true, at least for me. I was keeping the barometric pressure screen on in the digital screen. After I moved back to the day and date screen it almost immediately picked up the atomic signal. If anyone else has this issue, that's what it is. I have several Casio watches. This is my absolute favorite! Also the band is 23mm. The standard seems to be 22mm.
