Terrible movie but a once in a life time event that I will always remember. Before this movie came out and back then with no spoilers me my pops thought that Jackie Chan will be the monkey king and was the main character not some white boy 😂
I rewarched this film recently on Prime Video, and only after pausing it and seeing the characters names written down did I realise that Jason's last name is Tripitakas, as in Tripataka, the name of the monk in Journey to the West in one of the English translations! Such a cool little detail Regarding the characters speaking English, I was always under the impression that they were always speaking Chinese, but Jason could understand them if he cared to listen, which is why Jackie's character was speaking Chinese when they first met, until he says to Jason "THATS BECAUSE YOU'RE NOT LISTENING"
There's a scene right after Jackie and Jet's fight where they speak Chinese to each other because Jason entered the room, which seemed more like a choice by them instead of Jason "not listening". For a movie like this kind of a minor nitpick and I understand it's easier for the audience with more English.
This was the first movie featuring Jackie Chan and Jet li in the same film, like a kungku movie fan's dream. Although it doesn't settle the decades long question "Who is the better kungfu actor, Jackie Chan or Jet li?", it finally have them playing against each other. Spoiler: Kinda like the destined one in BMW, Jet li's character: silent monk, is transformed from one of Sun wukong's hair, destined to save the real Sun wukong.
Yes, I knew I wasn't the only one thinking of this game when I saw the new Black Myth Wukong video game. I knew I recognised the Monkey King character from somewhere, and Jet Lee played him very well. His expressions were downright amusing.
I always remembered this movie when I was watching Wukong gameplays. Thank you for bringing this to TH-cam. Jackie Chan was my fav character from that era. His Drunken style fighting is super funny. One of the best Drunken fights movie was Drunken Master .
I watched this movie because of this video and I will say it was my opinion that rather than the Chinese characters speaking English it was more that Jackie Chans character allowed our protagonist to understand the language via magic. Also the reason we had an American weakling character as our lead was more to give us the story of a journey to the west. He fit the tripitaka role very well and it was a great way to tell this story. Thanks for making this video it showed me a very fun telling of this story if only through it's spirit.
Absolutely love this movie! This was my introduction to Wukong. Also Jackie Chan and Jet Li in the same movie! Hell yeah! Dream come true. So when the game finally got announced I was ready for this, even rewatched it before it released.
I really wish their first movie together wasn't Hollywood but a pure HK action flick. They should've been the main characters in their movie, but we got this movie about a goofy American kid with Jackie and Jet as supporting characters. With that said, this movie still delivered some good fight choreography from the two legends.
I just watched this movie again last week. Great movie. When Jackie chan says "You are not listening" is a magical moment when he is able to understand Chinese and I don't think the Lord changed him into stone. He changed himself into stone .
I remember that movie, and I enjoyed it growing up as a silly movie. Now that I'm older, I feel like it was both a parody and celebration of the older martial arts films, and I'm glad to see that some others remember it.
i will also add i fully believe Jackie's outfit is a reference to Yuen Siu Tien who played his mentor in master with the cracked fingers, snake in eagles shadow, and the original drunken master in the role of teacher he is playing homage
When Jackie and Jet fought... I got very thrilled. I think that was the first time i've seen them together in a movie. Not sure if they were in a movie before this one tho.
The language part is like in Vikings. They speak english to make the viewers understand. Jackie's first line, in english, was ''Because you are not listening''. So the main character understands at that moment chinese, but for the viewers it remained in english.
I commented this to someone else, there's a scene right after Jackie and Jet's fight where they speak Chinese to each other because Jason entered the room, which seemed more like a choice by them instead of Jason "not listening". I like that reasoning and totally understand that it was better for the audience to have them speaking English though. For a movie like this it's not really an issue, just something I found strange.
@@breadballer it could be that, if Jason isn't in the room to "translate" to the audience, then they will speak Chinese. But anyway, I'm pretty sure he's not in many scenes and they still speak English. It's been a long time since I saw the film, but I think they made the right choice to use English
I also loved this movie, and as a younger person I kind of interpreted the moment where Jackie's character says "thats because you are not listening" as a literal magical moment where he is able to understand chinese because of the staff or something idk.
I suggest you an old dark version of wukong movie directed by stephen chow (from kungfu hustle and shaolin soccer) the first one called " journey to the west : conquering the demon (2013)"
bro this movie is one of my favorite movies of all time, the music is incredible, the action scenes are awesome and it's just a fun movie that doesn't take itself too seriously. I'm so glad you're talking about it because I can never find people talking about this film
Dude, that movie is my favorite bad martial arts movie and it has so much in common with the wukong game, i think they took things from that movie, and not just that it's another retelling of wukong
I've always wanted to see this and never got the chance didn't know it was tied to the Monkey King, and Jackie Chan's Drunken Master movie was so crazy
See how no one had a problem back then when they would put a foreign character in a story that had nothing to do with westerners? Now it’s woke if the characters happen to be black
@@oddvariation1541 That's extremely disingenuous. Very few people have a problem with Heimdall being black or nick fury in marvel. The main issue is shoehorned garbage to make a quota for DEI. Black Ariel, white woman Ancient One to appease China, etc.
Its so funny i like that Movie prob watched it 4-5 times in the last couple of Years it came back instantly when i played Black Myth Wukong .. Alot of similaritys..
I have such a weird memory of this movie, it was my introduction into some of the Chinese lore around the monkey king, I really want to read the books in English does anyone know where to buy them? I just need a reliable site
I think the one by Anthony C. Yu is a complete translation and therefore lauded as the most 1:1 English copy. I see it on Amazon but that might depend on your country.
As this was basically a Hollywood movie with a Chinese theme/story, it was rather white-washed, due to Angarano as the main character all the way through, since it was a production targeted for mainly western audiences. Still, even though it was for western audiences, it did help a little bit bring the story of Wukong to many who are not aware of it. It was a fresh story for many in western culture who were more aware of western myths, such as ancient Greek, Roman & Norse gods. It is different in Eastern/Asian culture & nations though, that know more about Wukong than they do the ancient Greeks etc. Of course, the main attraction of the movie was the first ever major onscreen collaboration between the 2 modern-day martial arts actors, famous in both eastern & western cinema. The movie indeed only shows a tiny snippet of Wukong, his story & skills, but it was just enough of an appetizer for any viewer who got more curious about that lore. I liked the movie back then, it did its job, mediocre or otherwise. Thus in a way, Forbidden Kingdom sort of helped Journey to the West actually go even farther `west`, if you know what I mean. Today, the Black Myth computer game has done its job even further bringing this lore to even more western audiences (gamers) like it has never done before. It even enlightened many clueless people that Goku from DBZ was inspired by Wukong, not the other way around. And the game also brought political controversy, which that even helped fuel the game`s awareness further in global journalism. 09/11/24
It’s highly based off the journey to the west but it’s basically it’s own story. Either the directors wanted to make their own story with huge inspiration or they just simply had a million misconceptions but were too lazy to do research.
I don't know if your remark about Jackie Chan being a drunk martial arts master was a reference to it or not but if you haven't seen it yet, look up Legend of the Drunken Master. I believe it's actually a sequel.
Yep thank god someone else knows this. I believe jet Li's monk character was a revisit of a previous played character he did too. I haven't seen many jet Li movies, but Jackie's definitely is a continuation of the character he did
I''m glad I'm not the only person who fondly remembers this movie. It's silly and downright goofy at times just like how Jet Li's Monkey King is.
As someone that grew up watching The Journey to the West. Jet Li's version was a disgrace lol
Terrible movie but a once in a life time event that I will always remember. Before this movie came out and back then with no spoilers me my pops thought that Jackie Chan will be the monkey king and was the main character not some white boy 😂

This movie helped exlain wukong to soooo many friends. Chinese culture is phenomenal, great the stories are shared far and wide.
This was one of my favorites growing up
A favorite movie of mine growing up. This brought back some good nostalgia. Now I need to watch it again.

Stephen Chow also has a two part movie on Wukong, called a Chinese Odyssey.
Actually Black Myth Wukong took some inspiration from those Stephen Chow movies
One of the most amazing movies I remember watching along with my best friend along with drinks. Too damn good.
I'll never forget this movie... Grew up watching Jet and Jackie movies so seeing this collab was phenomenal!
