This has honestly been on my mind a lot lately. I don’t open a ton of product but when I do all I can think about is the plastic waste and single use items that I could only hope make it to recycling, but we all know that in the USA we don’t value recycling like we should. Great work spreading the word and bringing awareness to this issue in the TCG world
Alt arts in CR are super underrated other than the Moltres which everyone knows is insane. The Calyrex alt arts are super clean and deserve a lot more love.
Having Chilling Reign sandwiched between CP and PoGo is so dirty lol. I would implore anyone to look at the top 10 CR cards and say it’s not S tier. Bad pull rates? Sure. But man it has some amazing cards.
@@crogat2298 Jake took the point of view of a ripper, not a collector. So, imagine someone who buys a box and rips it open. The pull rates will weigh more than the card list, at that point. What good is having amazing cards in the set if you pull one okay card for the experience of ripping a box? Keep in mind, many people will only open one box and move on, because they may have limited financial resources with which to buy products. I don't agree with this perspective but that is the one that Jake is making these videos for. A collector, on the other hand, who buys graded slabs or singles of the cards he or she already knows they want will have a different opinion about the set because they are targeting their top desired cards directly and not being let down by pull rates of a random box. Collectors know that ripping wax is a fool's errand and the best way to build a collection is to buy singles of the card you know you want rather than spend money on a chance to get the card you want with a lot of additional disappointment of common cards, etc. So, yes, I agree with you. Take what Jake says with a grain of salt. I know what he means, but he needs better disclosure with his presentation and claims. There are also people that are completionists. They are not after just the top card, "chase card," of a set like Jake seems to imply. They want every card, even the commons to fill a binder. And even the commons hide some gems of beautiful cards. So, jakes perspective is narrow and does not encompass the entire community that collects, build sets, etc. He seems to focus on the heat of the moment "investor" types and the hype community that chases "chase cards." Chilling Reign is a beautiful set list that any collector would be happy to build and collect. It's not all just about the opening experience, especially with predetermined commitments to "hitting chase cards." I agree that Chilling Reign was poorly placed on this list. We just need a true collector to make a video about this topic. Most of the Pokémon TH-camrs are not true collectors, though they are Pokémon content veterans. A true collector would give praise to some beautiful cards from this era which outshine most alt arts and other "chase" cards. The Arcanine Sun & Moon Holofoil Rare Holo for example is a gorgeous card. Most wouldn't notice it because it is a common rare card, not a "chase" alt art or full trainer. It is a sun and moon card, which means it is older by one generation, but I don't know of an equivalent card in SWSH era that can dethrone it. These are the kinds of discussions all the Poketubers avoid to instead focus on the hype of the moment type content, which results in odd lists like the one Jake put together, because they are considering other things that may not even matter in the long run. Sorry for the long reply.

I bought some cards recently from Silver Tempest, I have been away from game a while but what I have been doing this year is: I have been collecting 10 packs per month, then everyday throughout december I will be opening 4 a day, then 18 packs on christmas day!, it is like a personal calender and it isn't too expensive, 2 years ago I only did 2 packs a month and had 24 packs (bought the last 2 on the 2nd of december), so then it was 1 a day, that alone way crazy fun, I even filmed it, It makes the countdown to christmas fun and of course you can still open more during the year, only those you choose to save every month are those you open in december, Silver Tempest is a set I just bought, can't wait to open that set for the first time at christmas! :)
Pretty solid list Jake! The biggest one that stiff for me was how high SF was. I’d put it right next to VV considering it’s a similar pack opening experience with the chase of 1 or 2 big chase cards.

When you said opening Celebrations is only decent and not that much fun, it's important to point out that when everyone had their fill of XY Evolutions between 2017 and 2018, everyone said it wasn't much fun to open either. Now, I'd say it's probably the single most fun set to open due to all the base set reprints and super unique Mega full arts and secret rares. Small set, yes, but wildly fun pull rates, and even the commons, which are holos, all feature legendary Pokemon with nice artwork. My top 3 - chilling, brilliant, evolving... champions, go and celebrations are all trash. But I like large sets where I'm not opening the same cards over and over again.
Great video! Love the insight and great advice to a new collector! Love collecting Pokemon with my son age 11. Appreciate the opportunity!!! Thank you!
To me the evolving skies score is a bit to high, I agree with the 10s, but the 8 feels kind of to high. I've opened over 200 packs of Evolving Skies and I don't know if it was just my luck or something else, so I'd rate it closer to a 6 for pack opening.
Gotta pay homage to Vivid Voltage - It was the S&S set that was released closest to the time I started getting back into the hobby. The excitement for this set was real - it was perfect - had Pikachu as it's chase card - introduced a new 'type' of card - the Amazing Rares but my favourte S&S set would have to be Brilliant Stars - - Charizard focused set with multiple Zard pulls - introduction of trainer gallery (reminiscent of the Pokemon/Trainer art from Cosmic Eclipse) - the big birds in the gold rare Well rounded set with ample opportunity to have some great pulls!
I think fusion strike and chilling reign are way too low and vivid voltage is too high. There are no good cards in vivid voltage exept for pikachu vmax.
Hey Jake! I’m interested in pickup up some vstar universe but everything I’m seeing is around $100 usd. Do you think they will decrease in price after release? Maybe around $60-70? Thanks!!!
I was a bit surprised about Shining Fates not being your number 1, although looking at your ranking sheet I understand why. Still, I seem to remember you having more fun opening Shining Fates products than Evolving Skies. If pull rates were the biggest issue, I'm sure Evolving Skies would've ended a lot lower.
I wonder if the Error CR etbs will do anything. I have a few. I managed to get some Evolving Skies etbs at Msrp yesterday. Definitely hard to find now. Glad i have some boosters for it
Im sorry but I dont not have the same opinion for shinning fates. As a collector there’s only one real chase card. Half of the baby Shinies are for Pokemon that most of us don’t even know and they don’t feel very exciting when you pull them. I’ll admit on release the set had a lot of hype and I think they will have good longevity, but honestly I would rather open a pack of astral. Great video though 👍
1.) Evolving Skies (Just bought 10 Cardboard Sleeved Packs after restock at Walmart earlier wish me luck please!) 2.) Astral Radiance (Mainly because I pulled the Alt Art Machamp V from mai first ever cardpack via the Cardboard Sleeved Single Pack Variant ☺️) 3.) Brilliant Stars & Silver Tempest & Shining Fates & Celebrations are interchangeable for this spot for me

I bought some too, I have been away from game a while but what I have been doing this year is: I have been collecting 10 packs per month, then everyday throughout december I will be opening 4 a day, then 18 packs on christmas day!, it is like a personal calender and it isn't too expensive, 2 years ago I only did 2 packs a month and had 24 packs (bought the last 2 on the 2nd of december), so then it was 1 a day, that alone way crazy fun, I even filmed it, It makes the countdown to christmas fun and of course you can still open more during the year, only those you choose to save every month are those you open in december, silver tempest is a set I just bought, can't wait to open that set for the first time at christmas! :)
@@randomisedgaming8135 it's a good set. I'm doing a booster box or 2 every weekend then buying some crown zenith when it comes out and keeping them sealed while I finish tempest
@@dustinschafer5024 Nice! sounds really nice actually!, planning to also keep those sealed and forgetting about them.
My top 3 - chilling, brilliant, evolving... champions, go and celebrations are all trash. But I like large sets where I'm not opening the same cards over and over again.
Amazing rares are also in Shining Fates.
Thanks for posting the sheet!
Amazing rares are in shining fates too. Not just vivid voltage
Great video! Love the insight and great advice to a new collector! Love collecting Pokemon with my son age 11. Appreciate the opportunity!!! Thank you!
Brilliant Stars is #1 in my book
Vivid over chilling reign is crazy
To me the evolving skies score is a bit to high, I agree with the 10s, but the 8 feels kind of to high. I've opened over 200 packs of Evolving Skies and I don't know if it was just my luck or something else, so I'd rate it closer to a 6 for pack opening.
Chilling Reign so far down, and giving Evolving Skies an 8/10 in pack opening experience is just insane
evolving skies pull rates are as bad as FS though?
I think evolving skies pulls are better thanks to it having a larger pool of alt arts. But your experience could differ from mine
I made a tier list where the 24 most expensive cards from each set chose the placement, chilling reign was number 2 on the list, truly underated
Gotta pay homage to Vivid Voltage - It was the S&S set that was released closest to the time I started getting back into the hobby.
The excitement for this set was real - it was perfect
- had Pikachu as it's chase card
- introduced a new 'type' of card - the Amazing Rares
but my favourte S&S set would have to be Brilliant Stars -
- Charizard focused set with multiple Zard pulls
- introduction of trainer gallery (reminiscent of the Pokemon/Trainer art from Cosmic Eclipse)
- the big birds in the gold rare
Well rounded set with ample opportunity to have some great pulls!
Thanks!!!
I think they will because vmax climax did drop but it took 3 - 6 months after release
Drink every time he says “pack opening experience” 😂
Can you do a video detailing the difference between complete/master sets as well as potential value?
complete is just 1 copy of each card, master set includes both holo/nonholo and their reverse holos
You should do one about Japanese set
I wonder where crown zenith will be ranked. It’ll prob be at the top in terms for artwork
Do you see battle styles etbs going down to 15 dollars or less?
Chilling Reign is underrated here...needs to be top 5 at least. IMO it's just behind brilliant stars and on par with Lost Origin.
There's Full Art Sonia Trainer drawn by Naoki Saito in Rebel Clash.
I wonder if the Error CR etbs will do anything. I have a few. I managed to get some Evolving Skies etbs at Msrp yesterday. Definitely hard to find now. Glad i have some boosters for it
Chilling reign and battle styles two of the most underrated sets , vivid voltage and celebration two most overrated set
Tyranitar alt art from Battle Styles should've got a mention
how do i know when a set is going to stop being printed/sold? is it year by year or set by set or will a set stay out for a few years? how do i know?
The typical rule is 2 years since that's when older sets rotate out of play. But officially the pokemon company can print more of any set they want
@@TwicebakedJake outstanding thank you so much!
I agree with this tbf.
If you were to compare shining fates to hidden fates, hidden is 10x better imo!
Me and all 3 of the other Battle Styles fans waiting to see how low it scores 😂
the pokemon go japanese booster box, was the best expirience to open for me
I rejoined the hobby at CR after almost 20 years so im gunna try and get a master set if i can
Great video. Champion’s Path is too high on the list. 😂 Shining Fates is too high in my opinion. 😂 🙂👍
Brilliant stars always number 1!
Battle styles is gonna go to the moon( because I'm hoping the booster box goes up lol)
Fun video - thanks. Mostly agree - the only one that stood out for me was Vivid Voltage - I would rate it a few notches lower. Thx!!!
Wasnt expecting chilling Reign and Fusion strike to be that low on the list.
What happened in 20.48?
Amazing rares are also in the shining fates set(3of them) combine with the six from vivid voltage you have 9 amazing rare. One of each Pokémon type.
You might want to double check your facts. You said Amazing Rares were only printed in Vivid Voltage. That is 100% incorrect
My top 3:
Evolving Skies
Celebrations
Chilling Reign
1.) Evolving Skies (Just bought 10 Cardboard Sleeved Packs after restock at Walmart earlier wish me luck please!)
2.) Astral Radiance (Mainly because I pulled the Alt Art Machamp V from mai first ever cardpack via the Cardboard Sleeved Single Pack Variant ☺️)
3.) Brilliant Stars & Silver Tempest & Shining Fates & Celebrations are interchangeable for this spot for me
Nice top 10 pretty Acurate
Ngl I never understand when people rate Vivid Voltage. But I think you had to be there when it dropped, because it created a memorable hype
Battle Styles being under Champions Path is psychotic lmao
And Chilling Reign lmaooooo
Why nobody talks about crown zenith?
