I see your channel is still quite in the beginning phase (with now about 195 subscribers). I appreciate it that you put effort in trying to help other people. Just some remarks, and when you look back your own video, you may come to the same conclusion. If this is a tutorial for ppl that want to repurpose an old Mac: - Be aware that the settings panel may look quite different (as older Macs do not support newer OS-X versions). There are solutions for upgrading such Macs. You may mention that possibility briefly. - Try to create a real ‘from scratch’ situation, as that is what others will see. So no IP-addresses or network connections that appear magically as they are still there due to a previously made connection. It will also make your video more clean and compact. - That local IP address could also look different from 192.168.x.x. It depends on the router brand or what your internet provider prepared for you. 10.0.x.x. or 172.x.x.x. is an other variant. When the video is aimed at people that never enabled a shared location, such things may look like details, but could be quite important. This all can be confusing for beginners. That being said, Keep up the good work!
Thank you, yea as I make videos I’ve slowly noticed how beginners might need more filler information. I appreciate the feedback as I am always looking to improve the videos. ❤️
Thank you so much trevor, I just tried it and it works. We need more people like you on TH-cam. Productive and can actually use an older product for different purpose.
With the introduction of the M4 Mini, I plan on buying one. I"m still using my M1 Mini as my daily driver and it's awesome -- but once I get my M4, I'm dropping my (2012) Mini Server and want to replace it with my much less power hungry M1 mini. I've done tests with it to see how it acts across various devices I use on my network.. One disturbing thing I noticed was that, even though I only selected a specific folder to be shared, I could still see the whole drive. I couldn't access anything but the shared folder, but it bothers me that the rest of the drive can still be seen... I changed "everyone" to "no access" and was still able to see everything.. I was even able to access it from my windows machine without even logging in! Apple really needs to bring back their Server OS. Currently I have Ubuntu server running on my old 2012 Mini as my file server, but I'd really rather run MacOS when I switch over, because then I can use screen sharing to directly interact with the server, rather than using the CLI... Not really sure what's going on with MacOS and lack of security with file sharing, but I'm gonna research more.. Thanks for the video!
With the new Mac mini I might have to do a follow up video on this to see everything I can plan out with it as well, I would like to only see the folder I’m allowing access to and not the entire drive.
@@trevorhanson3489 I've been doing some testing & here's what I found so far: I created a "sharing only" user. Then I followed the normal sharing process and shared a specific folder. Under the "users" part of the sharing settings, I added the "sharing only" user to the allowed user list. I went to my laptop and was only able to see the shared folder, logged in as the "sharing only" user. I haven't tested it from a Windows machine yet. On the Mac itself, you can't log in to a "sharing only" user account -- it doesn't create a home directory or anything, just allows someone to log in over the network and see the folders you've set up to share on your main (admin) account. After work tomorrow I think I'll explore this more with my Win machine. Your vid has taken me down this rabbit hole :)
Hello Trevor, thank you in advance for your helpful video. I still have a question about understanding. I currently have a Macbook Pro and would like to buy an iMac as well. I would like to have both computers always on the same data set, including the desktop image. When I have worked on the desktop, the data is transferred to the iMac (automatically as soon as I am back on the WiFi). Is this possible without a network? Thank you in advance for your answer. Andy
Hmm, I am not too sure if there’s a way without some sort of network connection, at least not in this situation. Unless you back everything up to a drive and then manually transfer to the other device
Great video, thank you!

Thanks for this video, exactly what I was looking for!
I appreciate the feedback!
Nice video. Btw, how do we connect this from external network connections from outside?
Great answer you got. 😂

Appreciate it, mind if I ask what model?

That’s really cool to see and hear about. That’s why I enjoy exploring tech and all of it’s intricacies
