Can you GAME on a 14 year old laptop? - A review of the HP Compaq 6910p

- Today I'll be testing the HP Compaq 6910p. This laptop, originally released in may of 2008 has a core 2 duo T8300 alongside a intel GMA x3100 GPU. Let's test just how usable it still is 14 years down the line in 2022!!

I have managed to run Windows 11 on this laptop. With HDD replaced to SSD it is much usable. Love the ergonomics of this laptop.
I would love to run windows 11 on this laptop, I just found out about a windows 11 version called Tiny11, which should run pretty good on this laptop but sadly I don't have it anymore :(

This is the most nostalgic laptop ever to me. In my childhood, Hp compaq Nc4400, and 6910p. The good old days with Need For Speed World ; )
Yeah, this laptop is also pretty nostalgic to me, I basically grew up with hp laptops and my first laptop was a nc6320. I used it for playing minecraft back in 2015 lol
Nice review you have right here about the laptop. As a fellow 6910p owner, I do have a few things to add:
The trackpoint should just work even without any drivers. In your case I suspect either the very finicky cable isn't plugged in all the way or that the cable is torn.
The fingerprint reader would work with Windows hello if you manually download the drivers off Microsoft update catalog. The device is called AuthenTec Inc. AES2501B. It would be shocking to you that this fingerprint sensor is crazy fast and very accurate.
While the speakers do sound good, there are NO speakers on the left side of SDCard reader - that's your hard drive instead. It has stereo speakers but both are on the right!
Also it seems like you did not route the wifi antennae properly and hence right hinge cover isn't sitting totally flush. Routing is very confusing and you'd want to refer to HP's service manual on their website for this.
As for the LCD bezel screws, if you don't have the bottom bezel screws, I'd highly recommend you carefully open the LCD bezel and tighten the hinge screws inside. These hinges are small and designed to require the strength of the magnesium lid to be durable.
If you are into more performance on this laptop, getting this laptop modded to 1066Mhz front side bus is extremely easy and involves SPD modding RAM and then moving one resistor and soldering one wire all under the RAM slot under the keyboard. It allows cheap Core 2 duo T8100's to run at 2.8Ghz, T6600 at 2.93Ghz (with some battery life penalty, and T8300 would crash at 3.2Ghz), or any of the 1066Mhz FSB T9x00/P series CPU's to work, though for this you lose sleep function in my testing.
Lastly, if you can find the bluetooth module for this laptop, it would work perfectly fine in Windows 10 and works with my Galaxy Buds perfectly.
Thank you! I've just finished editing a more in depth review of this laptop but I wish I would've seen your comment earlier. I'll investigate the trackpoint and wifi antenna, I also didn't know that about the speakers but looking at them right now, that makes a lot of sense! I got the fingerprint reader up and running and it definitly is quite a good fingerprint reader! I had some trouble with setting up (it flawlessly added one of my fingers but it was giving me a hard time adding another one of my fingers) but it works well and it's also pretty fast! Thanks so much for your comment, I've never received such a detailed comment about a laptop that I've reviewed before!!
@@TygoDoesStuff Well I have this laptop and I am much more technical about these things and how to get the absolute most out of them. The main competitors of this laptop are the Dell Latitude D630 and Lenovo ThinkPad T61 14.1" widescreen, and here with that competition in mind this laptop has its charm of packing the same components inside a slightly smaller chassis with smaller LCD bezels than the other 2!
Here are more things you might not know about:
1. It's nice that you got the HP Quick launch button software installed, but it seems like you did not install the required .net framework for full functionality. After installing that, you have a much fancier animation for the volume/brightness display and you can configure the 2 shortcut touch buttons to do whatever you want!
2. This laptop has an ambient light sensor and unlike Dell's implementation, this one doesn't suck and adjusts reasonably well! Fn+F11 to toggle between on and off.
3. The optical drive is hot swappable. This is a big misconception as HP put a screw so it doesn't eject during shipping and people thought it's not hot swappable. The screw is not necessary and the drive holds itself in with a satisfying push mechanism.
4. If your battery is working well like mine (I am lucky it came with a 2010 genuine replacement from the recall of exploding Sony cells), HP's battery check software gives thorough detail about your battery's behaviour and health (select advanced options in the app)
5. It's absolutely crucial you use a HP genuine charger of at least 90W capacity. If you use a Dell charger on this, the laptop WILL play dead!

My laptop recently broke down as it shows a message in boot saying that there's no hard drive.. Also, the BIOS isn't working but that hasn't caused a problem starting the laptop before.
My question is how can I retrieve my data from this dead hard drive?
I got a 6510b and just installed 4 gb rams today. It is fully functional, except the fan. The fan never stops and a google search revealed there was a kind of design flaw that caused the fan always running. Hope yours doesn't have the issue.
I've never heard of that design flaw, this 6910p luckily didn't suffer from it, but I also just bought a 6510b ( what a coincidence lol), so I'll have to see if that laptop suffers from that design flaw, the seller said it was in working order so I'm hoping for the best
It’s a feature where it will always run when plugged in. It can be turned off in the bios. And having the fan continuously running is a good thing.

Yes you can play games on it. You just have to play appropriate games from the era the computer is from. Asking it to play new games is very unfair.
Back in the day, I would play a lot of Star Wars Empire at War or Command and Conquer The First Decade on my 6910P

That beast can run Half life 2 on low specs but only the original half life not the other 2 episodes and it run doom 3 at 25 fps and battlefield vietnam run pretty well.

I have this laptop, this is my 1st laptop that I bought. It has Core 2 duo T8100, 3GB DDR2 667MHz Ram and a 120GB SSD which I installed about 4 years ago. I run it occasionally now. Like once or twice in a month. I have a question. Did USB boot worked in your laptop? I tried a lot but mine does not boot up from usb at all. I had to use a usb dvd drive to install windows. Couldn’t boot from the built in dvd rom either.
I have one and using rufus (or WinSetupFromUSB) I can get it working.

Lmao I'm writing this comment of this very laptop. I just got it for free today and put windows 10 on it. It has the core 2 duo T7500, 2GB of DDR2, and somehow it supports 5g WIFI? Also the battery still works which is incredible.
I also am writing ths comment on the 6910p, I have the same cpu as yours. And yeah I am mesmerised that it can dee and connect to 5g networks.

If u have beamng from steam you can select "beta" version of the game that runs on dx10 but it will not run good. . .

Still a perfect laptop to work with.

Ohh that sounds good! The next reviews im making are about laptops which probably won't even run the first version of beamng but if I'll be reviewing a somewhat more capable laptop I'll definitely make sure to give it a try

It could be that the cable for the power button has become disconnected/damaged, that ribbon cable is located under the keyboard, next to the cooling fan
