This is the first video I've watched on this channel which I was brought to after watching the Novitiate trailer myself. I'm a cradle Catholic, and was very surprised at much of what was said in your video. Doubting how "realistic" the premise of Novitiate may be nearly invalidated this entire "reaction" video for me. I'm only 32, but my parents were born in 1950 and went through Vatican II during some of the most formative and vulnerable years of their lives. The priest would publicly call them out and make them kneel on the concrete for TWO HOURS if they got caught talking during mass. I, myself, have a distant relative who was a priest that carried on a sexually abusive relationship with a teenage boy for years (and presumably other young men). So OF COURSE I have no problem believing there were scary, hard core nuns who coped with their own fragility by dehumanizing other people. Abuse of power is not a Catholic problem, it's a human problem... But where we do have fault as a church, is when we feign naïveté, use bias, or even straight up lie about problems within the Church. The best way to defend the Catholic Church is to own these terrible stories, not deny them, thereby fostering the kind of sincerity and authenticity that actually allows people to open (or re-open) themselves up to Catholicism.

the movie exagerates and have some premises wrong. Vatican II didnt invalidate nuns for example just reform some monastic concepts and traditions, like the self punishment, that's to name one problem with the movie. I wasnt offended for the "nun-zilla" role of Melissa Leo, I think it was exagerated, Qualley's role, besides being great, makes a few mistakes, an unbaptized person wouldnt be able to enter a monastic life and so on. But the message of the movie it's on the end but I think misses the mark of being more of a exploration of encountering yourself rather than being just another "anti Catholic" stereotypes. I think the alternate ending should be in there as well.

I think you should watch this film then do a review. The trailer isn't misleading but there are several layers to this film that can't be displayed in a 3-minute set of clips. There's a story about Cathleen herself/her group of postulates then novices, a story about Vatican II, and a story about nun life. Several characters struggle with their faith and vows but statistically that probably does happen with a percentage of people who choose to go into religious life.

The mother superior in this movie is not a classic villain. She feels as though something she's invested her whole life is being changed and diminished by Vatican II. There is a crisis of faith in this story, but the issues brought up are issues that every thinking human should address as a part of maturing as a human . There isn't any new ground being covered here. It's just a snapshot into a period of time.

From the perspective of a Non-Catholic that was lucky enough to portray one of the older nuns on this movie, thank you for watching & reviewing the trailer. I found the trailer intriguing myself, more than scary. Melissa Leo did play an intense Mother Superior & stayed in character throughout filming. She was fabulous, deserves another Oscar & had the crew terrified (seriously)right up to her final scene. My feeling from being on set was that this is going to be a quality film, made to tell the story of how these changes impacted the lives of the nuns that had given there entire life to the church, only to now be told they were not special in the eyes of God. The main focus is on the younger nuns through, & their storylines. I expect to see a well written & artsy film, lacking in catholic bashing. It was filmed in Nashville, so a bunch of the extras will be seeing in en masse there in October. The few crew lucky enough to already see it were impressed. The R rating is for an incredible scene & that's all I'll say. Please see the movie, if your movie review is as intelligent as the trailer review, I look forward to it.

I don't have a doubt that stories like this did take place. The female commenter seemed shocked about this. I was raised Catholic and no longer practice. I am protestant now. Watching this trailer made me angry but it is because it reminded me of nuns and priests I dealt with in the past. I was not even born in 1964.

I haven't finished watching this video yet but I can't help but say something now. When I watched the trailer, there's this one part of the movie when the Mother had said something to the effect of "nuns don't ask questions". That part, or that line, reminds me so much of what had happened to my mom. To give some background, my mom and my dad were Catholics before converting into Mormons, I was Catholic until I was two when they got converted. My mom has a special place in her heart for Catholics. My dad on the other hand.... well.... You don't want to know. Anyways, for what she had told me, my mom years ago, before she met my dad, was the one who had taught the youth group or had a certain calling in her congregation. When she would ask certain questions of Catholic doctrines the nuns had pretty much called her the black sheep because they thought she was questioning the church. In my church (the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints; aka the Mormon church) our leaders would always encourage us to ask questions, even the holy scriptures always had encouraged us to ask questions. Asking questions and questioning the church are two completely different things. Asking questions helps you learn and grow whereas questioning the church or the gospel is like cutting down the branches and pretty soon the tree that you had planted and grew. While I'm a devoted LDS Mormon, I am also pretty open minded person. I do respect people of other faiths and religions and I love this channel so much because it teaches somethings I've wondered about growing up. While my parents were very devoted to the LDS Mormon church, my parents would sometimes bring me to Catholic Churches because either a relative had died and there's a funeral there or there's baby baptisms we're invited to go to.

Christina C You are delusional. The LDS/Mormon church is very quick to excommunicate anyone who questions the history of the church, or the authority of the so- called prophets.

kay jay my church is quick to excommunicate someone who either decides to practice polygamy or leads themselves & others astray. If anyone is quick to excommunicate someone who questions the church and its history, it would be the fundamentalist Mormons who practice polygamy.

    • @tessa7413
      @tessa7413 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Christina,
It's possible that some misguided Catholics (even those wearing habits can be wrong & misguided) in your parents life caused them to have a bad experience and bad impression of the faith.. but bad experiences & some bad or misguided people in the Church don't make it "untrue." I've heard Mormons say (about mormonism), that "The church is perfect, but the members aren't." This is basically the same thing that Catholics believe about the Catholic Church. The Church is perfect and Holy, but many of the members (at least those on earth) are far from perfection, and still striving towards becoming the saints we are called to be.
Catholicism actually has a *very* rich intellectual history. We believe that faith & reason go hand in hand, and aren't at all at odds with one another. Questioning things is a *good* thing! It's even not necessarily bad to have doubts once in a while, because it prompts you to actually ponder and think about what you believe. If Catholics weren't supposed to question things, we wouldn't have had such a rich history in philosophy, scholasticism, academia, the sciences, or our very rich, deep & rational theology.
I pray that eventually you and your family will be led back home to the Catholic Church (which is *the* Church established by Christ). There was never a complete and total apostasy - that's just a relatively modern man-made myth held by some heretical sects in attempt to revise history to discredit the Catholic Church, and seemingly give credence to their own claims of "validity." To believe that there was an actual complete Apostasy of Christ's Church is contrary to both historical & scriptural evidence, and it would actually make Christ out to be a liar or failed prophet.. and in that case, why even follow Him?
I encourage you to seek truth honestly and objectively, and continue to research!
Here are some good resources I recommend to learn more about Catholicism -
"The Coming Home Network" www.chnetwork.org - this website has great resources, like "The Journey Home" hosted by Marcus Grodi (a show featuring hundreds of conversion stories/testimonies of converts & reverts to the Church from various backgrounds, including a handful of former Mormons, many former atheists, people with coming from Judaism, other religions, & over a couple hundred from former Protestant pastors), and excellent & very informative "Deep in History" talks, & "Deep in Scripture talks." Here's the link to The Coming Home Network's TH-cam Channel:
      th-cam.com/users/ComingHomeNetwork
A few excellent radio "call-in" shows (where anyone having questions about Catholicism can call in to ask) are :
"Catholic Answers Live" - airs each weekday on EWTN radio @ 5pm-7pm central time, (www.ewtn.com), and can also be found on TH-cam & www.catholic.com
"Called to Communion" with Dr. David Anders - airs each weekday on EWTN & on TH-cam @ 1pm central time.

I saw the film. Interestingly, it was recommended to me by a life-long Irish Catholic who is forty years my senior.
Personally, I did not feel that traditional Catholics, specifically the Reverend Mother, were vilified. Rather, it portrayed the anguish and turmoil that both the young (progressive) or old (traditional) nuns felt at the time of Vatican II, as it asked sisters to essentially leave behind much of made them who they were as Brides of Christ.
The interpretation of the Reverend Mother's actions as hyperbolic or stereotypical is a fair criticism, but I saw most of her character more as a portrayal of the anger, and mental illness, that accompanies abandonment- and yes, that existed and continues to exist in parts of the Clergy.
The film was well made, and did a decent job of portraying the protagonist's love of God and the Church as something pure and beautiful- but it also did showcase the doubt and struggles that Catholics can have in their faith. Acknowledging those struggles does not necessarily have to be anti-Catholic.
Anyway, thats just my two cents. Great work as always.

From the perspective of a Non-Catholic, this trailer is giving me the same anti-Catholicism vibes that Spotlight did. Knowing that it did well at the Sundance Film Festival, which is notoriously left leaning, leads me to believe that it is not going to portray traditional Catholics in a very positive light.

The only major problem with the otherwise-sobering and sharply-written Spotlight was when the guy from the victims' group said that the scandal has "nothing to do with being gay". The 2004 study by the National Review Board, with assistance from the John Jay College of Criminal Justice, found that around 4 out of 5 cases involved male victims older than 14 years of age. Ephebophilia, not pedophilia, should be the proper term for the psychological cause. I also find striking how the earliest cases occurred around the time that the gay rights movement really started to pick up in the United States for the first time. Spotlight is a great film and in my top 10 for 2015, but it does disappoint that writer-director Tom McCarthy and co. chose to sidestep a major factor in the widespread and devastating scandal.

David, Renée, Ned and Joe, you keep stating that the time period around the Second Vatican Council was tumultuous, yet you find it hard to believe that some members of a religious community would find these changes to be difficult and result in reactions presented in the trailer. Many religious communities (religious sisters, religious priests, religious brothers) saw dramatic change in their formation process with Novice Directors being replaced, burnt out, or simply no longer interested in the work of forming young people in their communities tradition. That same time we have also seen a mass exodus of men and women from the priesthood and religious life.
I am 38 years old, so I too did not live through the changes of the Second Vatican Council, however, I feel I have a good grasp on aspects of the Church based on the religious community I am a part of and hearing from my parents and grandparents. In speaking with members of my community that were formed (entered Novitiate) during this time period there were practices that are very similar to what have been shown - entering the community with 6 pairs of socks, t shirts, 3 pairs of black pants, etc. and laying prostate and renouncing the world as part of their entrance into the community. There were brother sent to from the US to Canada and told that they would not go home for 3 years (again echoing the idea that you had renounced the world for love of God). There have been a lot of social changes and secular assumptions that have impacted the Church that most traditional Catholic I encounter do not take into consideration (maybe they are just taken for granted).
Obviously, this is a trailer meant to get you into a movie, so it will be provocative. But it also seems to capture the reaction of some people at the time... ...imagine if the thing you committed your entire adult life to suddenly changed in some pretty dramatic ways. Would you embrace the much younger, more progressive members of the community? Or would you react like the religious sister in the trailer and feel out of control, out of touch? I do agree that the final verdict cannot be given until I see the entire film.

As a Traditional Catholic, I felt the same trepidation as Joe. The Reverend Mother felt like the Spanish-Inquisition-stereotype cult that the world likes to portray Catholics as, while putting a whimsical touch to the rebellious postulants dancing around a bonfire shouting about their love for God. As Joe said, this trailer made me rather scared, and sickened about the number of movies concerning Catholic topics made by people who have no clue what they're doing, and the harm they therefore do to the Church.

Honestly, this trailer looks like the mother superior is having a crisis of faith, and that the sisters are exploring a more "progressive" notion of spirituality. Notice the seen where the sisters have removed much of their habits and are dancing around the fire and proclaiming with a smile "I love you God." So, it seems to be portraying the tension between Progressive Catholicism and the rest of the faith. There's the potential, also, that this film could cover the sisters leaving the faith to discover this "greater" spirituality, considering that during this era a lot of religious left the faith and really put us in position of the priest shortage (though it effected convents as well).
Considering that the Mother Superior is overtedly stating her motivation seems to be flawed characterization. People usually aren't self reflective enough to declare things like "You're destroying my identity." This seems to be more of a "progressive" view that the resistence there was too the spirit of Vatican II had to do more with people fearing a loss in identity. But obviously such people would not self-describe themselves in that light. They'd likely be more concerned with people being led astray out of the faith, as well as going through an existential crisis if they felt that the changes the Church was going through was a sign that the Holy Spirit actually wasn't protecting the Church. Probably only after someone lost the faith would they see the pain of losing their faith as tied to their personal identity, especially if they were a nun. But again, stating that while she's in the middle of the existential crisis seems unrealistic and more aimed at trying to tell the audience how to interpret the character's actions.
The contrast in tone between smiling nuns removing their habits and saying "isn't reform a good thing" put in opposition with the tone the mother superior brings, plus the extremism she goes to seems to indicate to me that this is really going to be a journey where the progressive younger generation plays a heroic role against the villian of the mother superior.

  • @gridcaster
    @gridcaster 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

I think the Catholic setting of the movie is mostly incidental, unless of course you are a Catholic who cares about the portrayal of the Church.
This movie seems to me to be more about an all-woman world that is still controlled by a male existential force. Within that world, the struggle of young liberal love and passion against tradition and conservative values.
While this isn't a subject that is totally fictional for religious life during Vatican II it is highly stylized to fit the story needs of the director. It is no more directly about the Catholic Church than Oliver Twist is about the Industrial Revolution in England; its about the girls and their passions.

On the one hand, it kinda paints the Church as some sort of cult. And it did well at the notoriously secular Sundance Festival.

After watching the film... the trailer did not do it justice at all or reflect its nature. While I imagine some scenes wouldn't entirely sit well with some Catholics (ie the intimate scenes) they were shot in a tasteful manner aren't explicit or fetishistic. What I found interesting about the film was that it didn't feel to me as though it was placing a judgment on the Church or Catholicism itself. As a viewer the film was well written and acted such that I empathized with the traditionalist's Mother Superior's struggle and grief at the Vatican II reforms and her resolve to stay devoted to God even though she felt He was turning his back on her, just as I empathized with the gentle and loving soul of Sister Mary Grace who loses her faith in the Mother Superior (but not in the Church). And most of the younger novitiates as well and their different paths. I felt for the protagonist's mother's dismay at her desire to devote her life to God, but meanwhile I was rooting for the protagonist to succeed in becoming a nun. The film is mostly neutral and does not try to moralize about which is right and which is wrong (traditionalism vs reformism, staying or leaving etc.) except for one aspect, that I found interesting: I believe the film opines that nuns were heavily let down by Vatican II, that their exclusion in the decision making process ended up hurting them and overall hurting the Church. I am not myself Catholic so my perspective might be different, but respectfully I think this was an interesting film and I was surprised to learn about the mass exodus of nuns post Vatican II.

As for the film, it looks to me like it has potential to give a genuine representation of how it was to go through Vatican II for some people - I believe there definitely were some religious institutions that were close to what this trailer has - the Redemptorists, amoung others were known to have used the 'discipline' which I'm going to say was definitely too extreme whatever way you look at it....

Hi, I just stumbled upon this review/reaction while searching for a link to watch the film. My impression from the few reviews I read about it is that it is not meant to be a film about Catholicism so much as it is a film about women and ultimately the human struggle between faith and desire (as well as love (in this case, of God) identity and humanity). I think in that sense it is not meant to demonize or glorify catholicism. It sounds like the backdrop could've been anything else. One thing that is interesting is that the director has mostly a non-fiction and documentary background and that supposedly transpires (in the quiet, rhythmic way ritualistic convent life is portrayed, so I do not thing it is a film intended to be edgy or artsy). This is her first feature-length film. Anyhoo, going to see if I can track it down and I'll come back with a proper opinion, if I do.
Unrelated to the film itself, but rather to one of David's comments: my mother was born left handed and she was repeatedly hit by nuns with rulers or other similar objects until she wrote with her right hand. To this day she uses her left hand for mostly everything besides writing, but writes with her right. (I'm 25 so that gives you an approx idea of how old she is). My grandmother could also talk about the turmoils during Vatican II, as she was not raised a Catholic, but converted in the 50s, living in a predominantly Catholic country and majoritarily (at the time) Catholic region.
If any of you read this in the next week or so, I wish you all a Merry Christmas and a happy new year!

I grew up in the 1940's and 50's and attended a Catholic Grammar School in Brooklyn, N.Y. We had approximately 16 nuns who taught in our school. They were very bright and they taught English, Math, History, Geography, Religion, Spelling, Writing, etc. all day in each class. There was not one instance of anyone in the school ever being beaten, smacked, yelled at or any physical punishment in the eight years I was there. My cousins also attended and have never heard of any actions of this type by the nuns to any student.
I would like to make a comment regarding the Catholics who are called Traditional and the Neo-Catholics (after Vat. II.). Your panel members are too young to know anything about what it was like to be a Catholic before Vat. II. You rely on the memories of your parents (who are also too young) and grandparents who may be old enough to remember. Imagine that all your life, up to say. January 1st, you were taught that no one other than a priest should touch the Sacred Host, the Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity of Jesus Christ as only the priests' hands are consecrated to touch it. For a lay person to touch the Host would be a sacrilege (a very serious sin). Even if It fell on the ground, you were not to touch it. The priest would take care of it. Now, suppose you went to Mass on January 2nd and the priest told you you were now allowed to receive Communion in the hand and it would be perfectly alright. Everyone now has the right to touch the Sacred Species. How would you feel?
Regarding the Mass in Latin, Catholics had a Missal they followed during Mass with the Latin on one side of the page and the English Translation on the opposite page. Some people say they never knew what the priest was saying at Mass so they were happy to have the Mass in English. I guess they didn't go to Catholic school or didn't bother to buy a Missal. The problem with the Mass in English is that the Latin was not translated word for word into English. In fact, many sentences were changed, many words were changed and there were many large segments of the Latin were left out altogether. Some of the changes led to the Mass being less reverent, less respectful of God, and more "people oriented". Extraordinary ministers of Communion were to only be allowed under "Extraordinary Circumstances" such as a huge number of people attending a Mass perhaps in a very large hall or theater or a ball park. It was not for Masses every Sunday where there may be 200 people or so attending. None of these changes actually came out of Vat. II but were instituted after the close of the Vatican Council according to the Modernists Theologians and priests who had been trying to change the Catholic religion since the late 1800's. Read about George Turrell, S. J. and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin S.J. for the truth about Modernism and how it has affected the Catholic Faith.
Catechism has been watered down. I worked with nurses in the ER and a discussion came up about the Immaculate Conception. 6 out of 10 nurses were Catholic and between 30 and 40 years of age. None of them knew the definition. They insisted it was the Virgin Birth. When I disagreed with them they refused to believe me. Wonder what else they weren't taught. The Church is in big trouble and the saddest part is that most Catholics don't know it.

I'm not sure that, as many of the comments say here, the movie is not an attack on Catholics (even traditional). It's mostly about how characters deal with certain issues in a given historical context. The mother superior is not a symbol of ALL catholics. She's a symbol of someone who believes something so strongly that, when even her own community starts evolving, those changes question her own identity. You could tell the same story with a cadre in the Communist Party at the end of the Cold War, in my opinion.

I get an anti-Catholic propaganda vibe from it. I felt that it's like a more serious counter-measure to the absolutely ridiculous and openly vile anti-Catholic propaganda of "The Little Hours", which coincidentally also revolves around nuns. As someone else mentioned in the comments, it definitely has a "Spotlight" feel to it. Of course, I'm never opposed for the creative telling of truth in film, especially if it's scandalous, because suppressing or whitewashing it would be intellectually dishonest. Yet, despite that I'm always aware with these opportunities the evil one will do his best to influence artists to twist plots and manipulate narratives by exaggerating legitimate faults and mistakes.
Man I miss good quality portrayals of the faith in films... Like: The Mission, A Man For All Seasons, Becket, Jesus of Nazareth, and The Passion. For Greater Glory, Risen, Ignatius of Loyola, and The Nativity Story were really good too. But yeah, at least the mockeries aren't very memorable despite being pushed by major film studios.
Anyway, looking forward to checking it out and also hearing your reviews on it! Thanks! And welcome back Renee!

I don't think this trailer effected me like everyone else did. I think we see a Nun who is used to Tradition, Mortification, and Penance. Do I have experience working in the Convents? Sure don't. Though as a member of the Old Catholic Generation who has spent time just watching what has happened during Vat II and researching the past, I find myself sympathizing with the Nun in this short trailer.

What a great movie. It really shows us what a devastating change Vatican II has had on nuns. And we wonder why we have a lack of vocations...a little hind, they don't feel special anymore. Vatican II has taken away the beauty of sacrifice for God. It's a pity that Catholics today need to be so soft.
Maybe it's time to think about reviewing what we have really lost since Vatican II. 90,000 nuns left the convent after Vatican II because they took away so much.

Save Mary. I am religious.I'm from Brazil. I am Sister Sofia of the Holy Face. Of the Servants of the Sacred Face. And honestly this film, in my view, is another example of how cinemas want to belittle the Catholic faith, while at the same time giving an idea against those who wish to reach the Catholic tradition more, since after the Second Vatican Council it really left great openings for many liturgical abuse and against the Catholic faith which is centered on the Eucharist. Remember that you should not rate a movie as purely non-committed spectators, but as Catholics, and so see that this kind of movie in the reality we are in is actually an affront to the Catholic faith and a bottom-up lie in the background. nothing. With a very free interpretation of the facts of the story. Paganized and atheistic cinema like the present must not be taken into account, for it has always fought and will purposely try to disparage the Church and the faith. So be careful what you watch and remember that you are Catholic and not mere spectators with no commitment to anything. God bless you

The films shouldn't make anyone scared. I'm Catholic, it didn't scare me. I watched it. I understood where it was coming from. If it was from another religious point of view and discussed a different religion, I'd probably think the same. We can't look at our religion in a way that we have anxiety about anything that potentially critiques it. If there are inaccuracies that's one thing, but this is fiction probably inspired by facts. The issue is "is the trailer/ film interesting"? To me, yes it is. No religious institution is perfect, especially if it's run by imperfect creatures like human beings. Take it for what it's worth, Art which is subjective.

We are. Those pushing for the redefinition of marriage have been sending death threats, censoring, bullying, protesting at churches and not letting them out. Unfortunately we even have lay "Catholics" and priests saying we should be for redefining marriage because its the compassionate thing to do. Most people I talk to aren't even voting because they don't even care which is alarming.

    @MigiMabp 7 ปีที่แล้ว

After hearing about the movie, I looked it up and found some advance reviews.
Going off of what I read (and finding out that it's very rightly rated R), it seems to take a very cynical view of not just the reactions following Vatican II, but also of life as a nun. As I understand it, Vatican II isn't even really the main focus at all (I could have misinterpreted what I read, of course), and it's just more of the usual view of religious as repressed and ultimately unsatisfied beings.
I confess, it irks me whenever I hear about these movies, because they really do tend to focus on those negative aspects within the Church in their attempt to give an honest portrayal. That last part makes me want to add quotation marks to some degree, but ah well.
Ultimately, I'm with those who have concerns about the film (that's probably obvious, sorry!), but I'm glad the four of you are planning to tackle it together.

As I remember from St Teresa of Avila, you are to choose a cerebral spiritual director over a holy spiritual director. So this reverend mother, whilst unpleasant, might possibly be the best choice for so many people wanting to advance their spiritual life.

    • @bokarndiaye323
      @bokarndiaye323 6 ปีที่แล้ว

Well, what do you define as cerebral ? In my opinion, "cerebral" (in the sense of pragmatic/rational) would mean one realise that inciting a novitiate to slap herself with a whip, or to walk on broken glass, causes a physical harm that can have bad consequences on them. Therefore, that wouldn't make her the best choice for anyone trying to advance spiritually.

As someone raised Catholic, and now is 100% secular, hearing "left", "liberal", and "artsy movie" used as a pegoritive was very disappointing. I always felt that Catholics were above the toxic elements of the new era conservatism you can find all over the internet. That being said, I know part of this behavior also stems from the culture of the area you guys and gals live in, and the make up of said community/communities.
As for the trailer, it looks well made, and with an interesting story. I'll probably take the wife out to go see it. Judging the from the reactions of this trailer, it's seems that you all aren't comfortable with films that aren't portraying the Church in a favorable way. There are tons of films that some would call propeganda in favor of the Church, others historically accurate (as accurate as a two hour film can be), documentaries of all sorts, and films that criticize the Church, both fictional and non-fictional. Art is art. Appreciate it for what it is, and try not to discredit things as "left", "liberal", "artsy". That kind of speech is for unintelligent internet trolls who think they're being edgy. Have intelligent discussions, and opinions based on facts and open-mindededness as you would for something you support or created.
Again, as someone who once shared views similar to your own (religiously speaking) I have higher expectations from you all when it comes to discourse and open-mindededness.
P.S. This is the first times I've seen or heard of this channel. I might stick around and maybe even become a patreon, but if it takes on the elements expected from Milo Yiannopoulos, Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, and the likes, obviously I wouldn't be able to support this channel, though I'm fairly certain this channel would still thrive off of like-minded individuals. Anyways, best of luck to you all and your loved ones, and take care.

LandInbetween As stated in my earlier wall of text, you can find films that range from blindly praising all things Catholic, to films that blindly bash all things Catholic. That's how the world works for all topics. I expected more than the knee jerk reactions from this video. I actually expected intelligent discussions, but, hey, not in 2017. As time goes on, I see the intelligent conversations about all things religion (films, books, music, etc) that I grew up with being put away in favor of deconstructive toxic attitudes and anti-intellectualism.
I guess this is what modern day Catholicism/Christianity is. I'll always have the fond memories of my Church inviting Jewish and Muslim groups over to celebrate the new year and share views of the world and more. I hate to say it, but religion in the United States today is in a ugly and scary state, and more and more people (inside and outside of the Church) see that everyday.

      @ AgentZeroNine1:
      >As someone raised Catholic, and now is 100% secular, hearing "left", "liberal", and "artsy movie" used as a pegoritive was very disappointing. I always felt that Catholics were above the toxic elements of the new era conservatism you can find all over the internet.
This makes little sense. This video has zero elements of what you're speaking of, about the "toxic elements of the new era conservatism." And it seems to me you've been looking at MSM (or been purposefully looking for these "toxic elements") who's been freaking out over "new era conservatism". On a political base, the entertainment industry is rather liberal if not left, and it rarely portrays Christianity in a positive let alone objective, intelligent light. The skepticism of devout Christians is reasonable.
Ned, the person who said he "smelled an artsy movie" at mark 15:56, is a film buff. It wasn't meant to be a pejorative.
Joe at the 14:58 mark uses "liberal" in beliefs and concepts in context of establishing new practices within the RCC.
And "left", in terms of politics, was never used. The word was only used when Ned was talking about his step-dad being left-handed.
      >That being said, I know part of this behavior also stems from the culture of the area you guys and gals live in, and the make up of said community/communities.
What are you implying? Yes, they attend a relatively conservative Catholic university but their reactions are not so much a product of their environment. As I said above anyone who is familiar with how Christianity is portrayed in the entertainment industry, and if they're honest about their rundown of how Christianity is portrayed, will probably share similar sentiment of the four college students.
      >As for the trailer, it looks well made, and with an interesting story. I'll probably take the wife out to go see it. Judging the from the reactions of this trailer, it's seems that you all aren't comfortable with films that aren't portraying the Church in a favorable way.
And they're suppose to be happy or relieved? Their reactions (watch the entirety of the video if you haven't) are reasonable and thoughtful.
      >There are tons of films that some would call propeganda in favor of the Church, others historically accurate (as accurate as a two hour film can be), documentaries of all sorts, and films that criticize the Church, both fictional and non-fictional.
It seems to me that you're implying that favorable Church movies/documentaries may possibly equal propaganda while unfavorable is not.
Also, list the "tons of films that some would call propeganda in favor of the Church." God's Not Dead isn't one because that's mainly a Protestant movie. The Da Vinci Code doesn't count.
      >Art is art. Appreciate it for what it is, and try not to discredit things as "left", "liberal", "artsy".
They never did. Again, you either didn't actual listen to the video or you just stopped after the six minute mark.
      >That kind of speech is for unintelligent internet trolls who think they're being edgy.
Again, they never did such a thing. And even if they did, if they showed skepticism based on politics, I neither think it's unintelligent nor trollish given how liberalism and leftism treat Christianity.
      >Have intelligent discussions, and opinions based on facts and open-mindededness as you would for something you support or created.
Because the "new era conservatism" doesn't have intelligent discussions which aren't based on facts and are narrow-minded? I'm just going off what you've written in previous quotes.
It's not that the mother none was losing her control for her barbaric ways over the nuns is that day the Catholic Church Vatican II was telling her that the 40 years that she's been in there was for nothing because it made all nuns is equal as normal practicing Catholics I grew up doing those times as a Catholic and my mother was upset that it was no longer a sin to eat meat on the Sabbath that she practiced all her life so to dedicate yourself to God for 40 years is a nun and to live under their strict rules and all the sudden somebody tells you it was all for nothing you didn't mean nothing your marriage to did Jesus was no in void so imagine how that must have felt I think it was like 90,000 nuns left the convent after that and the church said it was changing with the times me personally I think they just didn't want to support all those nuns It's All About the Money with the church

    Weird looking movie trailer
Sundance awarded movies are usually not too pro Christian so I doubt it will have a positive outlook on the Catholic Church

Unfortunately this kind of practice existed before .. it may not today ... But some people used religions to do bad thing

What practice? You're using the "people used religion to do bad things" card when the trailer was more so about a young woman entering religious life, meeting a strict head nun, and questioning her devoutness.

You take far too long to get into the point of your video.

Can you review the Lady Bird (2017) trailer directed by Greta Erwig? It's not a movie about Catholicism per se but the main character attends a Catholic high school with nuns and priests having roles.
Edit: I believe it's fair to accuse the indie circuit of Hollywood of cultural appropriation.
Edit 2: I don't think preferring the EF and/or being critical of VII and its effects on the mass (yes it has changed... See the rubrics of EF and OF) makes one an "extremist."

I’m really sorry I saw it. Typically I like nun films with mean conservative mother superiors but this was made with no idea of what Catholicism is and has. It was basically the awful disclosures of Maria Monk written by a black lesbian

The director/writer is a lesbian? If so, go figure on the sodomy portrayed in the film. You'd think that trope was more in line with a seminarian at that time.

I didn't like the movie, because the Mother was portrayed as having mental issues and because of homsexuality between nuns.

A lot of mistakes about religious life in this movie
