Snagging a hook is the worst! I like the simpler way you added the body and the hackle. KG's method takes time and when there are more steps I tend to forget one. Nice!
The best stuff I've found for protecting my fingers from those dangerous sharp hooks is the plastic cover of speaker's connector wire. It fits tightly on the point of the hook. You can get a lot of pieces from just a few inches and the added value is you can use the silver and copper wire as fine ribbing material. By the way .... amazing action of the streamer and very good tutorial.
I usually tie some sparkle hair in the tail and use a marabou feather on the head section on the end to cover the beads a little better, also I cut the underside of the head flatter like a zoo cougar to have it move really erratically when stripped and it turns down better when you let it hang. Just my 2 cents. Other than that, great tie! I love yalls videos!
Been in his shop a few more times but it just keeps slipping my mind, no big deal, your method works perfectly, thanks again. And if by chance I do remember I will ask him....!
When im not on the coast fly fishing in the salt i fish the back creeks here in eastern NC for Bowfin aka Blackfish- and id have to say Kelly's patterns are what works.Iv tied Alot of different flies but kelly's flies are the biggest producers. Thanks for the vids.
The rod size depends on your personal comfort level. I have seen guys fishing 6wt-8wt with this size of fly. I have gotten away from Beadalon since I shot this video. I now use a coated beading wire found at Wal-Mart. It is a little bit thicker than Beadalon and the coating is a little more "rough" so it grabs the thread better, which holds it in place better so the rear fly doesn't tweak as bad.
I use seven strand uncoated 30lb braided wire, it helps alot and woulnt wear out. big predators wear alot of the other stuff out too quick. the uncoated wire helps with binding it down with no slippage. i catch fish in the 7lb to 50 with it.
Seriously excellent video! I've been tying that fly over here in Scotland for the last few days... Looking forward to using it in Montana and Alaska this Summer.
I am not a guy that is dead-set on one kind of thread. I have found that I like a smaller diameter thread for a lot of these flies than some other guys (mostly because I like to have a little more stretch in thread than some other people). When you start spinning deer hair though, I tend to go a little bigger in diameter and stronger.
COOL video very fast and great looking fly. I think I can bigger fish in western rivers on a spinning rod than a guy will on a streamer but I only wade not float.
hey just wondering why you never tie a marabou tail on your front fly like Kelly does. any reason or just preference? I noticed yours all have the beads visible and kellys are hidden by the marabou tail. nice videos by the way.
I get these comments now and then.....but I am not looking to teach a beginner fly tier how to tie these flies. I will let the monotone, boring, 45 minute video makers make that type of video. I am going to entertain and show already profficient tiers (those guys that don't need their hand held all the way through an articulated fly) how to tie these flies. Sit back and watch them man.....they are fun.
Do as you must, your deal but this old timer would counsel that you keep your arrogant comments to yourself. You are not the greatest tier ..... try not to divert attention to bad tying with equally bad ad negative commentary.
Funny how people from the Ozarks like to have self delusions of grander! I find it funny.( I don't have time to teach new fly tiers) what a derp !! Psh unreal all really simple techniques. Even this simpleton can do it.
Great video! What size rod do you use for flies that large? 9/10 weight? And I looked up the beadalon stuff and there are a lot of choices. What size/type do you use? Thanks for posting a non-boring fly tying vid, and especially the footage of the flies in action!!!
Brian... I do not see anything wrong with the way you trimmed the front of the fly. I think you did a great job on the whole fly. Sorry you stuck your finger but we have all done that at one time or the other.
@MrQuist123 Thanks! I have a lot of underwater footage but will have to shoot some more for the future videos. I have probably 20 patterns lined up for this style of video so I will be doing them for a while.
@notquiteflyfishing Sally Hansen's Hard as Nails....found in the fingernail polish isle at Wal-Mart. (gives you a good reason to go down that isle and look like you are interested when shopping with the opposite sex)
Was fishing on the Madison this past weekend and stopped in Kelly's shop. I asked him about the Sex Dungeon and he told me that he uses dubbing for the body, not chenille, was in a hurry so I did not inquire, but on Wednesday when I will stop in again I will ask him which type.
Technically, the front hook is a longer shanked hook making it seem bigger. You can tweak the hook size to fit your needs though. You could go with a #1 in the front and a #2 in the back or a 1/0 in the front and a #1 in the back.
Awesome stuff man, these videos are bomb. I saw that hook shots video with you and Joe cermele, pretty sick. Were you guys using sink tips with those big articulated flies or actual sinking lines?
+morsi Thanks, love doing the videos.....they are a lot of fun. The Hook Shots episode was SOLID, those guys are cool. I am a total sink tip guy. But these sink tips aren't the old loop-to-loop stuff we had years ago....the line companies are making integrated sink-tips and they are absolutely awesome. A full sinking line is a pain in every way and doesn't give you any more "pluses" than a sink tip that is WAY easier to manipulate when it is on the water, cast, and just generally fish.
In all seriousness, and all things aside. Try Beadalon, Galloup is a huge fan, as are all of the other major streamer tiers I know. I started off using mono but hate how it wants to slip and slide around the hook....Beadalon doesn't slip around the hook.
I tried one of these with salmon hooks and I felt stupid having to go to the hospital to get the thing removed from my hand because it would not come out ,the doctor asked me what was I gonna catch like that .
Love these videos. This was the first one I saw when I got interested in tying articulated streamers. Now at the age of 14 I sell the things commercially, and I just made my first fly tying video. My page on facebook is Vtflyplace. Please keep these videos coming!
Nah, not defensive. Criticism makes the world go 'round....I am a happy debater (kind of sounds funny lol) and just like debating. I have Mike Schmidt's "Meal Ticket" coming out tomorrow, subscribe and you can be one of the first to see it!
The Sex Dungeon has a deer hair head.....the Circus Peanut has a chenille (Cactus Chenille) head giving it TOTALLY different movement in the water. I asure you, this is the Sex Dungeon Google "Circus Peanut Fly" and then Google "Sex Dungeon Fly" and you will see what I am saying.
great looking fly, but far from Galloup's masterpiece. he I've dubs the rear hook and also builds up a big, nasty collar at the head. good work though. I'd use it.
Josh Higdon all the rear dubbing is for is to protect the schlappen stem. It barely affects appearance. The only real difference is that he doesn't tie marabou on the front hook
Check out the video description for all of my MUST HAVE tying tools, fishing tools, AND camera equipment.

Old video but amazing, love the multiple bits of underwater footage. Thanks for posting

Take an eraser off a pencil, stick it on the hook point. Excellent tie, great video!

Great video. I always put an ERASER @ THE POINT I Don't need more disabilities. Hooyah the Journey Continues.
I tear up my fingers a lot tying bass bugs and my favorite solution is a chunk of wine cork. Just cut it and use on of the crumbled pieces
Excellent tutorial...Great Streamer... Heard its deadly for big Browns...Not easy on fingers or thumbs either....Ouch that hurts!
COOL video very fast and great looking fly. I think I can bigger fish in western rivers on a spinning rod than a guy will on a streamer but I only wade not float.
Awesome stuff guys enjoy every video you've posted. Really glad I found you help my tying a ton...
The music adds nothing and you need to take some lessons from Mr. Gallup ...... you are also arrogant .... put a sock i it.
I'm actually quite encouraged to see that much more experienced fly tiers often end up bleeding for the fly too.

Totally get that. I appreciate the long ones but there are many times I am clicking ahead to see what they are doing
all your videos are awesome thank you for posting these
Are you using a 2 for the back because the b10s is generally shorter than other hooks?
Great video! What size rod do you use for flies that large? 9/10 weight? And I looked up the beadalon stuff and there are a lot of choices. What size/type do you use? Thanks for posting a non-boring fly tying vid, and especially the footage of the flies in action!!!
what kind of thread do you guys like to use in your streamer pattern videos?
Great video for a super nice fly! What size beads are you using for this one (never used beads myself, have no frame of reference)?
I believe they are 6mm Czech Glass Beads.
@flyfishingtheozarks I would like to thank God, the Academy, and Chuck Norris.
Brian... I do not see anything wrong with the way you trimmed the front of the fly. I think you did a great job on the whole fly. Sorry you stuck your finger but we have all done that at one time or the other.
a pencil eraser or piece of foam over the point should help keep you from poking yourself... nice fly!

Where do you buy the beads that you use in your articulated streamers? I know they are glass beads but any more specific than that? Thanks in advance.
I buy mine at Hobby Lobby. They are "Czech Beads".
Thank you. Do you buy them in a color assortment, and these are 6MM with 2MM(?) hole?
Probably posted already but what kind of thread do you use? Awesome video by the way.
Awesome video mate ! Which lense do you use ?
what size wire/beads for the articulation point?
My dad bird hunts w Kelly Gallup lol going to have him train me... I didn’t know he was this known
I tare my thumbs every time on this fly to I found that if you put fome over the hook you save your fingers remove it when ur done triming the fly
how about small vinyl tub like the ones on bokins

So both the hooks are size 2? Also you’re just using a razor to shape the head correct ? Great video !
Technically, the front hook is a longer shanked hook making it seem bigger. You can tweak the hook size to fit your needs though. You could go with a #1 in the front and a #2 in the back or a 1/0 in the front and a #1 in the back.
Yes, just a plain flexible double sided razor blade to shape the head. They are nice because you can bend them to help get the shape you want.
Awesome stuff man, these videos are bomb. I saw that hook shots video with you and Joe cermele, pretty sick. Were you guys using sink tips with those big articulated flies or actual sinking lines?

Perfect video. Thanks!
Thank you Thank you Thank you. I do not need to be told again and again to put a thread base down etc... Just get on with the fly. Great format.
In all seriousness, and all things aside. Try Beadalon, Galloup is a huge fan, as are all of the other major streamer tiers I know. I started off using mono but hate how it wants to slip and slide around the hook....Beadalon doesn't slip around the hook.
Beadalon is top 3 articulation points sold for these flies....great stuff. Look a little closer at the material list.....it's there.
totally and utterly awesome
Can you make a video for the rainbow trout?
Tip for not staring yourself is put e pencil eraser on the top of the hook and you’ll feel the eraser before the hook lol
What vise do you use for these big flies?
The Peak LIRS.....PERIOD. There is literally no other vise that has the ability to hold a hook as solid as it.
@@flyfishingtheozarks I'll look into that :) cheers buddy and thanks for the video
is that a shaped razor blade?
@BDBone7018 Glad I can help! Hopefully you are as entertained as you learn something. :)
Brian what kind of razors are you using to trim the head?
The kind I use are called Dorco.
ok cool thanks ive been looking all over for them and cant find them
www.amazon.com/Dorco-ST300-Double-Stainless-Original/dp/B004WS95AM/ref=sr_1_5_s_it?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1469194217&sr=1-5&keywords=dorco+razor+blades
Any Walmart, Walgreens, etc will have them. They are the old style blades, double sided.
I tried one of these with salmon hooks and I felt stupid having to go to the hospital to get the thing removed from my hand because it would not come out ,the doctor asked me what was I gonna catch like that .
super fly!
what's the name of the track?!
I tear my thumbs apart too. Over and over.
what vise are you using?
it is a Peak vise....love it.
+flyfishingtheozarks I'll have to check it out, thank you!
Would this work for bass
yep
I smoke the smallmouth with them.
sick vid nice tracks

LOL... I bleed like that when I tie my flies too
These vids make me tingle in my naughty bits.

This is “vintage” TH-cam right here…
Can u catch trout on this
Only rubes and chumps leave the hook point and barb sticking out of the vise jaw.
You're kidding, right? Proper hook placement in any vise has the barb and point exposed...
WD40 straw trimmed on point works for me...
The Sex Dungeon has a deer hair head.....the Circus Peanut has a chenille (Cactus Chenille) head giving it TOTALLY different movement in the water. I asure you, this is the Sex Dungeon
Google "Circus Peanut Fly" and then Google "Sex Dungeon Fly" and you will see what I am saying.
Thanks!
Perfect 👍
Those hooks are sharp, aren't they
Beadalon is wire.....braid sucks and I don't use it either.
Were you forced to change the music in the video? It's not the same as it used to plus at some point there's absolutly no sound at all.
mlevesque33 I noticed that as well. It's like that on all Gallup vids now
Fly Fishing Eastern sierras Not just Galloup videos and I told Brian about it.
FUNNY :-) in a good way! You have a face for radio. More of your Trophy! NICE!
The first one is just a bigger version of a wooly bugger.
i just watched your vids again for the first time in a couple of months and the music seems to have changed? Kinda sucks right now
Check out the beginning of my 2012 Greatest Hits Video.....I swam the Snare. :)
@grizzly5028 Thanks!

Yeah, probably Ice Dub or something similar.
first cast, snag on rock under water: lose fly. F%@K!

4:09 at least it wasn't your thread
Smear blood on your fly it will look even better
if you would slow down a bit, you wouldn't stick your fingers on the hook point so much. :-)
You should slow down..
Joshua Wilkins you sure you want a 15-30 min video?
He stuck himself with a hook.. Just joking.
Oh I thought you meant to play the videos at normal speed. My bad, sorry
I stuck a b10-s through my thumbnail tying one of his flies
Nope, same music as always.
I think I got ahead of my ⛷️...rides hook down correct?
Haha, yep...hook down.
@@flyfishingtheozarks Thanks. All was well until I got the razor out 🥸
