I think the message is lost on a lot of people here. This is about dressing professionally, speaking properly and presenting yourself in a confident way. Behavior that should be expected in a professional environment.

This is exactly how it works. And this is the reason why so many posers get into positions they do not deserve. That's why so many managers fail, leave companies to join other ones and repeat their failure. It's all about self-presentation and definitely not about skills! Good luck, world!

Look at all those people who can't handle reality. Sit back and consider how times you dismissed someone out of hand and why you did it. I'm betting their presentation was a deciding factor.

Main thing I took away from this video is have confidence in yourself. For some it may be conforming to how your peers speak and dress, for others it may be enbracing their culture. Either way she changed the way she spoke and dressed in order to have confidence in herself. Nothing wrong with that. Whatever floats your boat or finds your lost remonte

@@imageadvisorsinternational7935 What a contemptible person you are and you are disgusting thinking poor people are poor because they deserve to be. It isn't a character flaw to be fired at fifty just because you are deemed too old and have to start all over again. Hewlett married a wealthy man who had been married previously. She "worked" as an "economist" in an Ivy League school until she was "denied tenure"-fired-because she in fact "lacked focus." She went into government and didn't really make a "big success" for herself there. She did okay, but she had hubby's income to fall back on "just in case." She wrote books few people read and were infamous for being factually challenged. I doubt she has "made millions." You don't "make millions" pandering to a tiny sector of the working population and have thinly veiled contempt for those who are not in your social class like she does. I personally regard people like you as failures as human beings because of your contempt for the poor.

If I assume best intentions, I don’t think her research reflects the world we want to live, but rather reflects the Western World (chiefly the US) as it is... with our struggle with having a congruent value system that is anything more than ego-centric, and rife with hubris, privilege, unconscious bias, and only promotes convergent thinking from neurotypical persons. I’m sorry... I don’t want to live in a world like that.

I see a lot of people already shooting this video down because of its subliminal elitist notions. And I agree with a lot of them that professionalism is bullshit. The only people who would care about a system like that probably created it or uphold it, for the sake of justifying certain behaviors. But it is also important to remember that certain mannerisms can influence you for the better. Maybe not necessarily being well-spoken or well-dressed, but maybe being well-hearted is what helps you improve. Whatever you do. do it to improve yourself as a person. If being well-spoken and well-dressed is what that means to you, have at it.

Her dishonesty goes way back, when she was trashing the women's movement while benefiting from the real gains in the workplace by that very movement. She has shifted her focus somewhat since she cannot identify at all with any women outside her social class (millionaires, big-shot executives).

  • @figins

I believe that this woman's point of view encourages more homogeneity and narrows opportunity for people of all backgrounds. I for one feel comfortable wearing ripped up jeans and throwing on a plain t shirt. If I show up this way to an interview however I will be seen as a lazy or rebellious person. The truth is I graduated in the top 10% of my school and am on my way to college. I am also an introverted and quiet person. People would think I have no ambitions and that I prefer to be in the background, the truth is I love being on stage, I've been in two bands so far, and I hope to continue making music in college. Don't let people limit you and what you can accomplish. Go be the first electric guitarist with a PHD in Astrophysics... nevermind, Brian May has done that already :)

Forget this conformist video and be yourself. How you look and speak are only decorations. If you have a thick accent then keep it. If you have a distinct personality don't throw it away. These are the characteristics you had when you were getting the experience and knowledge over time which amounted to your skills which are, after all, what count. The business and managerial world is built on delusion because, at the end of the day, managers are not necessary and pretentious behavior is their skill set.
Those who build and run the factories are more important and, likewise, a power station worker's attire, accent and boardroom whimsy is not going to get him a job when he has no idea how to stop an arc fault breaker from tripping and causing a hazardous power surge through the electrical system. Likewise a computer programmer's attire and haircut is not going to come into much play when he has to find an error in the thousands of lines of machine code he is compiling into a graphic user interface.
The further away your job is to actual work, the more ways there are to fool yourself from how certain actions are meaningless.

Your point is morally valid, if somewhat idealistic. However, when it comes to filling a management position (particularly one that deals directly with customers and/or outside entities), all qualifications being equal, presentation will always be the deciding factor. This speaker isn't talking about presentation INSTEAD OF qualification; she's talking about presentation IN ADDITION TO qualification.

Muon Ray yeah that's definitely true because I think at the end of the day no matter what kind of style one way you present yourself if it's obvious that you're being yourself and being real people are going to respect you even if that isn't there a particular style of comporting themselves they are going to respect you and see you as being just a genuine person

It's actually condescending and I dare say unhelpful to say this when you already speak in a way that wouldn't be marginalized. It would be more effective and authentic to address those that marginalize.

I'm Welsh and am understandably very upset by this video. No person should have to change their accent/identity to prove the validity of their message. The quality of your word and perspective should supersede any distinctions of class, I do not need to adopt a different accent to pronounce any jargon.

She's right... but I hate that she's right. We've evolved to be extremely good at pattern recognition, which oftentimes results in stereotyping that can be nearly impossible to overcome with objectivity. One truly does need to be well spoken and presentable to be taken seriously, especially in the professional world. I hope that we'll eventually get over these superficial judgments and follow ideas rather than charisma. Until then, brush up on your grammar and buy a nice suit. (Or say fuck everyone and work for yourself)

I agree with the well-spoken part, but Gandhi led an entire nation dressed in commoner's clothing. And he's not some extreme example. In fact many other respected leaders choose not to dress in rich attire and admired for their humility whereas those (many politicians) who flaunt their wealth in expensive designer clothing are met with scorn and perceived as egotistical.

Many of friends who went to convent school got job early on as they could speak " good english" as many consulting indian company wanted that. I took the hard route. Finished my masters . now doing far better job . also i worked on my communication as its really important to be well spoken so that others can understand you. most convent school friends git burnt out working in indian consulting firms and have stopped working now . Being well spoken and well dressed is good if you want to be followed, but not necessarily if you want to lead. Followers can be passive and simply watch you, but if you want to lead, you must have some way of convincing people to change themselves. Helping people change themselves is true leadership. Making a bunch of people follow you without encouraging them to change themselves is false leadership.

Great advice: be rich and lucky enough to have not been born with a lisp or a quiet voice. Yea...those are totally things you have control of. *facepalm* Not to mention her blatant sexism ignoring all of the gender inequality issues at play in the topics she relates to.
Also what's with that creepy smile she gives after each sentence? It's totally creeping me out and it looks intentional.
What happened to you Big Think? You went from making gloriously accurate, progressive, countercultural statements like "Religion is child abuse" to saying backward things like "if you were lucky enough to be born with certain advantages, you'll probably be more successful than those who aren't" Sure, it may be true, but that doesn't make it a good thing that we should be promoting. We should be addressing the real social problems that lead to such inequality rather than pretending that anyone can make it if they just mold themselves enough.

Sadly enough most of what she says is true in today's world. If you're good looking, well postured, and don't sound like a complete idiot when you open your mouth, you'll most likely get much further ahead than the hard working, dedicated, intelligent, loyal one. If you don't believe me; look around specially if you work in an office. Sit back and observe your surroundings; you probably haven't noticed because you're the hard working one.

Evoletization He didn't say that, he implicates that people get discriminated by looks in sectors where looks shouldn't matter ( in modelling and such it of course does matter). Big think should, in stead of self help videos like this there are other places for these kind of videos, talk about how to resolve the problem of discrimination cause of looks and other factors.

Lieven De Langhe Discrimination of people who happen to be lazy would be quite interesting. It's like being ugly, you can't do much to change that, yet it's seen as a guilt.

Utter rubbish. Buying a tailor made suit, speech improvement lessons and learning how to think 3 steps in front of your opponent does not make you a great leader.
If you want to lead, you need to concentrate less on your 'self' and more on how you make others feel. This means you have to listen and empathize with them.
This is where it gets difficult for most, they are so worried about their own 'self' because they carry so much 'mental baggage' that they are unable to listen 100% to someone else. People don't trust them.
    It's about authenticity.
People want leaders they can trust and this wasn't captured in this video.
