But this video is out of date so essentially gives beginners bad advice, it's much better and cheaper to use a cheap USB mic into your computer and mix on free/bundled/cheap software. Another option for making credible demo tapes is using a DAW app on your phone. This video demonstrates a really strange combination of gear that sort of works. 😅

Your grasp on basic electronics seems to be based on sound footing (pun intended) :-) I have 40 years of experience in professional audio, and I can say from my experience that the way you have explained the basics of sound recording is way too mature and lucid. I really think if you are a recording novice this video tutorial is absolutely exceptional. It is extremely informative in a wonderfully uncomplicated and jargon free manner. It is also very honest and really does offer good advice on the minimum requirements. Best of all the young lady comunicates very well just how within reach a satisfying little home set up can be. I would gladly use this as a teaching aid and think it would hopfully inspire young people. All your videos are superb.
first off, REALLY, all you need is a mic, interface, and that's it. Then the software or D.A.W of your choice. If you really want a low budget yet, legit sounding recordings, get the Focusrite Scarlett Studio bundle! for DAW, Mixcraft is great, very easy and very simple.
I heard the mic that comes in that bundle isn't that great? What is your thoughts on this? I was actually thinking of going with the Behringer UM2 Audio Interface, have you seen this one before it's fairly new!
emkplayboy6 The bundle is very good. Personally, I'm not too big on the headphones, but that's just a minor detail. For the price, it's extremely difficult to beat. With any recording set up, to get a good sounding product, you have to be patient and determined. With very affordable set ups, you can get very nice and even professional sounding results. DIY musicians like Plini, Sithu Aye, CloudKicker, Bulb started with very affordable set ups and produced amazing songs with them.

Nice presentation and you are a very bright young lady,but consider this; it appears to me,that you have a $300 field recorder and a $100 hardware mixer(totaling $400). As a much superior alternative..how about buying a $250 Acer Apsire computer,and a Presonus AudioBox USB(audio interface)..that has an included copy of Presonus Studio One Artist(which is a audio/midi multi-tracking program) and for around the same money,you would have the ability to record as many tracks as you like and add all of the vocal effects you like. Also...for another $119...you could get an M-Audio Oxygen 25 midi controller keyboard and make music tracks of your very own(rather than hooking up lousy MP3 player).

You are right, pre-amp is the part of the mixer. Preamp is designed to amplify very feeble signal without adding much noise. Amplifier amplifies more stronger signal to drive speakers or headphones. You need a pre-amp to amplify a small signal like a microphone and then feed the pre-amp output to the amplifier. Mixer has multiple pre-amps to amplify multiple mics and provides an easy way to mix the signals from those mics together into a stereo mix. Hope this helps.
You wanna "Siri" sing your songs? Or you gonna record voice with the frying pan? Internal audio interfaces are almost always too weak to rock the condenser microphone, only electret or kinda (sure, if you are not using active microphone). So you can't record any sound without phantom power. Mixer is a nice thing, it has preamps and other goodies. Recorders are also very important, they're designed only to record sounds (unlike phones and media players) so they do it brilliant. Anyway if you'll finally discover after some tracks that you are not as good in singins songs as you thought - you can sell your stuff for pretty nice money, 'case pro-audio equipment became cheaper slowly. Thx for attention.
ebay,what about a mackie satelite with traction,90 dollars,thanks but it seems like a step backwards,and what if u sing great until the the last note of the song,Sing the entire song all over again?,however the gear seems perfect for live recordings like recording you own perfomances concerts etc.
***** well if you dont wanna go computer software, there is always digital multitrack recorders,and they are selling dirt cheap on ebay,you can find a multitrack with 8 to 16 tracks,mixer and effects,and alot have a cd recorder built right into them,thats about the best middle ground i can thinkof (rice crispy treats please (:)
there are some multitracks with 8 inputs,i have the tascam 2488,which has 8 inputs and i think records 8 inputs at once(idk for sure)but lets say u get a usb interface or multitrack with only 2 inputs and u wanted to mic a whole band i would get a 8 line mixer for my drums,its up to you haw to record,i personaly would record every instrument seperatly,so i could fine tune the eq,compression reverb,etc,hope this was helpful

I agree with Teddy Herrera, if your a beginner or just want ur own home studio all you need is Scarlett Studio Package includes: Scarlett 2i2 USB 2.0 audio interface CM25 condenser mic HP60 monitoring headphones XLR cable its easy to use and doesn't take much space also pro software included :)
...might be a bit much for most youtubers, but running vocs, keys and gtrs, then finally, the whole mix (mastered) through a separate, good quality 2 channel preamp (between the mic and mixer) can increase sound quality exponentially... and startlingly! :) ...if you do this, make sure the preamps on your mixer (or interface) are turned down completely to prevent their influence on your recording.

Thanks for the reply. I found out the cause. Where the mic cable connects inside the mic, there must be a loose connection so its movement caused the scratchy sound. I taped up the cable to the mic to arrest the cable movement near the mic and this has fixed it (until I get a new one like the SB58.
As others did I also wondered why you weren't recording directly into the DAW since that would be a lot easier but for that you would of course need a better DAW than Audacity and a esp. a very good soundcard since Audacity doesn't support USB (digital) audio. The "split trick" would work on any DAW. Agree with your choice on mixer (Behringer). Great voice, even when recorded 'dry'! Thanks, nice video!

Great overview on your setup. I have had great success using a Zoom H2 (similar to your Sony) with its USB interface & laptop running Audacity. The H2 has a great mic, or plug in an external mic, such as a lav mic clipped to your shirt. Load the audio track into Audacity, check overdub in prefs. Record your voice in new channel in Audacity. Setup 1) Laptop (or desktop) computer w/usb 2) Digital Audio Recorder w/usb (Zoom H1/H2, etc.) 3) Headphones to monitor background track 3) Audacity
You listen to any music in your iPod or CD player, they all have only two channels L and R. Now guess how many mics they use in a music recording studio to get that two channel of sound? Just to record a drum set, we generally use about three to five mics! It is the mixer where the sound engineer mixes all those mics together into two L-R channels. Hope this explains.

Ritwika, Nice Video n Good Explanation, definitely going to help, main reason you need the mixer is when we connect large diaphragm Microphone like wise have shown MXL needs +48V phantom power (fantom), XLR Balanced connection, we can use unbalance cable but phantom power is must for Large Diaphragm Mics, 3 ways to provide the 48 volt is use external phantom power unit or use sound card capable of providing +48V or some mixer with phantom power, like wise here you have used Behringer Mixer.
The most simple setup today, is 1. Mic 2. soundcard/audio interface 3 any audio Engine/Recording software. MP3 playes,Mixers/preamps and DI recorders are not needed. Audiolink Mk I audio interface is more than enough MC-80 condenser microphone comes with cable and shock mount and mic stand the Audiolink Mk I comes with Cubase 6 LE in two copies Bundlepack with FL studio 7 demo and Midiclick And finally it comes with stereo cables so that you can plug the soundcard into active speaker(Monitors)
External recorders generally have much better audio recording capability than most DSLRS, so if you record audio in an external recorder, and use the externally recorded audio tracks for your video, the audio will sound way better.

Philo's point has weight, as i do the same with Ableton sound recording software which i got a free lite copy with M-Audio M-Track device, I use to mix the vocals with Karaoke Music. in order to add effects into my voice I use VE-5 from Boss, these devices will give you long mileage and are very flexible, hence, worth the investment.

I thinking of getting my granddaughter an in home recording system because she loves to sing. She done a number of contest and plays a has done very well. that's all right when your just starting off i remember when i first started i first had a small mixer but the deeper you go into music and start using eqs and compressors it starts getting more complex and you'll find you'll need a different type of mixer and that's when it will get more complex and expensive
@CastleRecordz I am sorry to hear that, sound booth is good, I wish I also have one. Listen to your voice only track. If it sounds bad, then replace your microphone, cable and preamp. Also check your equalization setting in DAW. Try rolling off low frequency and slightly boost frequencies around 3000 Hz. Hope this helps.
talking about budget, with this setup one can record on their computer, provided he has ASIO Drivers, DAW, Good Processor (CPU) and RAM, with ASIO any decent in build sound card will provide 5 MS delay or less on out put. During my initial days I have tried similar setup and successfully recorded couple of Demo Songs with CD quality.
I love Fostex, it produces very natural organic life like sound. With a proper mic, you can record very real life like sound which very few other recorder at that price can. It is a league apart from consumer grade products like Zoom H4n etc. It also can be used as an USB audio interface for your PC or Mac. You will need a recorder like Fostex as well as a PC pr Mac to run your DAW to edit the sound. Like you need a digital camera to take a photo and then you need a PC or Mac to run photoshop.

there are some multitracks with 8 inputs,i have the tascam 2488,which has 8 inputs and i think records 8 inputs at once(idk for sure)but lets say u get a usb interface or multitrack with only 2 inputs and u wanted to mic a whole band i would get a 8 line mixer for my drums,its up to you haw to record,i personaly would record every instrument seperatly,so i could fine tune the eq,compression reverb,etc,hope this was helpful

its easy to use and doesn't take much space also pro software included :)
...might be a bit much for most youtubers, but running vocs, keys and gtrs, then finally, the whole mix (mastered) through a separate, good quality 2 channel preamp (between the mic and mixer) can increase sound quality exponentially... and startlingly! :)
...if you do this, make sure the preamps on your mixer (or interface) are turned down completely to prevent their influence on your recording.

Thanks for the reply. I found out the cause. Where the mic cable connects inside the mic, there must be a loose connection so its movement caused the scratchy sound. I taped up the cable to the mic to arrest the cable movement near the mic and this has fixed it (until I get a new one like the SB58.
As others did I also wondered why you weren't recording directly into the DAW since that would be a lot easier but for that you would of course need a better DAW than Audacity and a esp. a very good soundcard since Audacity doesn't support USB (digital) audio. The "split trick" would work on any DAW. Agree with your choice on mixer (Behringer). Great voice, even when recorded 'dry'! Thanks, nice video!

Great overview on your setup. I have had great success using a Zoom H2 (similar to your Sony) with its USB interface & laptop running Audacity. The H2 has a great mic, or plug in an external mic, such as a lav mic clipped to your shirt.
Load the audio track into Audacity, check overdub in prefs. Record your voice in new channel in Audacity.
Setup
1) Laptop (or desktop) computer w/usb
2) Digital Audio Recorder w/usb (Zoom H1/H2, etc.)
3) Headphones to monitor background track
3) Audacity

You listen to any music in your iPod or CD player, they all have only two channels L and R. Now guess how many mics they use in a music recording studio to get that two channel of sound? Just to record a drum set, we generally use about three to five mics! It is the mixer where the sound engineer mixes all those mics together into two L-R channels. Hope this explains.

Ritwika, Nice Video n Good Explanation, definitely going to help, main reason you need the mixer is when we connect large diaphragm Microphone like wise have shown MXL needs +48V phantom power (fantom), XLR Balanced connection, we can use unbalance cable but phantom power is must for Large Diaphragm Mics, 3 ways to provide the 48 volt is use external phantom power unit or use sound card capable of providing +48V or some mixer with phantom power, like wise here you have used Behringer Mixer.

1. Mic
2. soundcard/audio interface
3 any audio Engine/Recording software.
MP3 playes,Mixers/preamps and DI recorders are not needed.
Audiolink Mk I audio interface is more than enough
MC-80 condenser microphone comes with cable and shock mount and mic stand
the Audiolink Mk I comes with Cubase 6 LE in two copies
Bundlepack with FL studio 7 demo and Midiclick And finally it comes with stereo cables so that you can plug the soundcard into active speaker(Monitors)
External recorders generally have much better audio recording capability than most DSLRS, so if you record audio in an external recorder, and use the externally recorded audio tracks for your video, the audio will sound way better.

Philo's point has weight, as i do the same with Ableton sound recording software which i got a free lite copy with M-Audio M-Track device, I use to mix the vocals with Karaoke Music. in order to add effects into my voice I use VE-5 from Boss, these devices will give you long mileage and are very flexible, hence, worth the investment.
Number how old are you and how in the world did you become knowledgeable. I mean I am very impressed. Great job! I thinking of getting my granddaughter an in home recording system because she loves to sing. She done a number of contest and plays a has done very well. great mic choice. i have Nuemanns but my go to mic many times is that MXL v67. they're great all around mic's.

that's all right when your just starting off i remember when i first started i first had a small mixer but the deeper you go into music and start using eqs and compressors it starts getting more complex and you'll find you'll need a different type of mixer and that's when it will get more complex and expensive

@CastleRecordz I am sorry to hear that, sound booth is good, I wish I also have one. Listen to your voice only track. If it sounds bad, then replace your microphone, cable and preamp. Also check your equalization setting in DAW. Try rolling off low frequency and slightly boost frequencies around 3000 Hz. Hope this helps.

talking about budget, with this setup one can record on their computer, provided he has ASIO Drivers, DAW, Good Processor (CPU) and RAM, with ASIO any decent in build sound card will provide 5 MS delay or less on out put. During my initial days I have tried similar setup and successfully recorded couple of Demo Songs with CD quality.
I love Fostex, it produces very natural organic life like sound. With a proper mic, you can record very real life like sound which very few other recorder at that price can. It is a league apart from consumer grade products like Zoom H4n etc. It also can be used as an USB audio interface for your PC or Mac. You will need a recorder like Fostex as well as a PC pr Mac to run your DAW to edit the sound. Like you need a digital camera to take a photo and then you need a PC or Mac to run photoshop.
