Very difficult for Julian as the 1980s was too close to John's passing and not enough time had elapsed to let the next generation of musicians digest the coolness of The Beatles - that's didn't take root until the "indie scene" started to happen in the 90s. Julian was caught between two stools with no real sound of his own thus defaulting to the producers of the day who were considered kingmakers - the 1990s echoed the 1960s a lot more where artists had more confidence to do their own thing and the labels let them run with it. The 1980s had more in common with the 2000s in the sense that producers took more control and the record companies had less faith in artists ability to write songs. Saying that Jules did come up trump's with "Saltwater" in 1991 - ironic that that particular song was not actually written by him.
