imagine being a punk back there, you did the hair, you did the boots you did the jacket and the spikes and you thought you were hard...then HR shows up with his church sundays outfit.
It's not the back flip, it's that his shirt stays perfectly tucked in after a back flip, that is the over-the-top stunt that impress's me the most!!! I've been pushing to make back flips in a 3 piece suit an olympic event! HR gets an honorary gold medal!!!
First time I heard Bad Brains was from an alternative radio show. I thought WTF was that. Upto now still dont know all the song titles but for sure I know its Bad Brains playing when I hear it.
Thanks. I had no idea what he was saying. I heard something like, “lies are up” Anyway, his vocal style reminds me a little of the singer in Mars, a no wave band, contemporaries of Bad Brains. They weren’t as frantic but the lead singer and HR had a similar way of slurring words
Icing on the Punk cake ! Amazing ! I have seen allot of live shows and have never seen such a brilliant spectacle of acrobatic punk performance . This footage is from 1979 mind you! HR set the bar high. I have not seen anybody since that has hit that rung with such perfectly timed style !
I've seen a video where HR perfectly Matrix dodges a beer bottle that got whipped at him. He just tilts his head to the side for one second while a bottle whizzes past his ear, like he had the Force or something.
Just love that '79 period, for me their most interesting era. H.R. looked like he was about to apply for a corporate hellhole and said "Fuck it" and went to the gig instead. Is that Earl on the skins? He sure beefed up that night.
So true ! I was 3yrs old but I have a intrinsic draw toward 79' as well. BB is one of my favs and this footage is golden. I have it on replay so I dont miss a thing . Dawn of Punk in reaction to line dancing disco that was so choreographed and stiff...lol HR for President ! He would have really cleared out the swamp of D.C.! So much so he got banned ....lol
What a contribution to thrash metal these boys made but criminally overlooked. A huge cut above the other hardcore punk bands of their time in how they could play.
were they overlooked ? I dunno everyone who was around at this time knew who bad brains were and loved them. they were the daddy's of hardcore I mean this show is 1979 thats like a year into hardcore and they are playing CBGB's
@@mikepette4422 Bad Brains weren't overlooked at the time nor in the hardcore scene but it was their contribution to thrash metal that emerged about 5 years later that certainly was. This was just about the thrashiest thing kickin' around in 1979 and way more so than any of the metal bands that later shaped the style.Bad Brains had the musical proficiency and able to incorporate heavy rock elements to their high energy, full speed ahead delivery. Hence, the early similarity.
@@PretentioFilms No doubt Diamond Head were a huge influence on the genre's emergence, especially their astounding 'Am I Evil?' track. However, Diamond Head always seem to be credited for their contribution and Bad Brains very rarely. Plus the fact Bad Brains were still a lot faster.
The bad Brains were in a class of themselves, without them how many bands would never existed. Hats off and cudos to HR and Dr Know and the rest of the guys, you made being a youth in the 80s a place to belong. LOVE YOU GUYS 😎❤️❤️
CBGB stood for Country, BlueGrass, Blues. Since there was little demand for such music in New York city in the 70's the owner of the club decided to hire punk and New wave bands into the club because no other clubs were willing to book these types of bands so "CBGB's" became the first club to book punk and New wave bands in New York and the owner became quite wealthy!
HR on throat has the most incredible stage presents that I have ever witnessed! A freaking backflip on cue !Amazing reggae punk energy !Thanks for posting !
I've seen the bad brains in various formations and HR solo several times. Whatever formation or solo act; HR & crew bring it every fookin' time. Then again, that was over 30 years ago. Lol! Awesome HxC.
He looks like he just got off the stock market floor for Goldman / Sachs . Good thing he went Reggae Punk he is the forerunning founding father of Punk as we know it today !
@@yubari2517 I know the bass well ...Hisashi sold it too me . It's still alive and well and will play again if and when the plague lifts. I took / wore off the INDETERMINATE.
I will tell you from direct firsthand experience at CBGB in December 1982, the Bad Brains plus CBGBs killer sound system and acoustics gave this music a low end power and intensity more powerful than any live instrument performance I have ever experience, before or since, and I have been to many hundreds of live shows
Holy crap, that backflip
exactly timed
NINJAHRASTA
HR was on point while landing with the beat kicking back in too!

badass
I don't have to imagine, I saw them at the 9:30 Club and I was never the same again.

Don't kid yourself, There was no punk before this, literally a fashion style before these men showed us what it was all about.
this might just be the most important gig in the history of hardcore
It's should be digitally archived at the Smithsonian . And locked in a vault in Case of a nuclear holocaust ! Priceless !
no question 😂 hands down one of the most amazing hc clips

I was thinking more of Bruce Lee but same thing for me I guess
I love his backflip

You can tell HR genuinely loves the music the band was playing
Who cares about the vocals and lyrics when you're doing back flips! HR was one epic front man. This is my favorite Bad Brains era 79-82.
I always dug HR's rude boy suits and attire back then, too.

@@eldiablo3794 You have to remember Ska and Punk had plenty of shared DNA.
I Against I is a great album in its own right. But I agree, there's something uniquely special about their earliest work.
I finally tracked down the lyrics: “DoobakaubarabathonitulAH!ThebadooahthiascoobiturAH!”
You forgot 1-2-3-4!
For those wondering..."Yeah we're jammin at the Atlantis tonight" is what he's saying. Over and over lol
*jammin
The same kinda pronunciation he uses on Pay To Cum.

Wow 1979 , kinda ahead of times , HC before it exists . And HR with a suit , impressive!!
I own that guitar that Dr. Know is playing in this video. I also saw the Bad Brains numerous times in the 80s and 90s. They are great.
