When you watch the self driving scenes in modern HD, you can see that the driver is dressed up as the car seat. Easy to not notice in 80s standard definition.

I think like when the two were together it was usually stunt Coordinater Jack Gill playing Garthe and stuff
Otherwise in separate shots it was just David.
