Growing up in Kenya in the 80’s this shoes were very common, we called them “akala” most kids & adults wore them in my area which was mostly dry with many species of plants that had long sharp thorns like agave,acacia trees etc, this kind of thorns would easily penetrate through the regular store brand shoes but rarely did they get through the “akala”

I live in the Southwest desert of Arizona. It gets so hot here in summer, the concrete & asphalt melts the soles if you don't keep moving. Like walking on jelly. This is genius! Also, what a great idea. American's do not realize that many areas parasites also invade the feet of people in you part of the world. Causing much illness. What we take advantage of here that so many would love to have just one pair of shoes. Be blessed!

Natives have been making these sandals in Perú from old worn tires for over 80 years. My dad even bought a pair
and used them at the beach for easily 25 years.
The narrator stressed Africa and it kept me wondering. I can categorically say he ended up not mentioning where Malcom hails from. Africa for me is too wide.
My father told me that after ww2 his dad repaired the familys shoes using old tyres as things were in very short supply.

These types of sandals are what I remember, seeing and wearing, in the early 70's(I was born in 1967'). I've only seen them a few times since then, this video, and a similar story 15-20 years ago (?).
