I'm a 72 year old American and I have been watching L&L for a few years now. I don't really think that I will ever be able to visit the UK, so I am vacationing vicariously through your channel. I am very sorry for all the bad that is hopefully in your past now, but very glad for the good. I continue to be impressed how such a young person such as your self can accomplish so much. The money you save on children go towards retirement and long term care insurance if you need it.
Haven’t regretted it in over 50 yrs.

Advice to people wanting to get married. Please do not compromise on things like having children, how you discipline the children, cultural expectations, where you want to live, family culture etc. Please do not compromise on these things if they mean alot to you. Just walk away. Marriage is not a thing to take lightly
@@lkae4 totally agree. It's different in Africa where children are viewed as a gift not a hindrance. People in the West use to know what sacrifices meant. Today people are praised for nothing other than being selfish. Sad

@@lkae4 Hate children? Just because you choose not to have children doesn't mean you hate children. I only had one child, my husband's choice, who had a very sad childhood. He loved children but didn't want any more. We enjoyed being Aunt and Uncle.

I'm from NYC and in London for 3 years now. I can relate to a few things - like being more conscious of my American accent:-). Agree London is super expensive but you get a lot more for it than in NYC (more space etc). I'm also self employed and it's a relief to have stellar healthcare and not pay anything for it (except in the form of very high taxes). I always cried when I paid US taxes because I felt like I got nothing for it in return or nothing that was noticeable. But here I don't mind the high tax because I feel like I'm taken care of in so many ways! I love it here! I feel like I'm in center of the universe over here. Continue to enjoy life in London!
I am British and have paid taxes for 33 years. I am more than happy that my contribution through taxation has helped my fellow man ie through the NHS. This is what a civilised society should be.
I don't even think taxes here are that much higher when you take into account both federal and state! but yes exactly, happy to pay it for what we get healthcare wise, and I also know that I have access to it even when I don't pay taxes because I haven't made any money. It's a dream!
@@loveandlondon Thank you so much. It's great to have another person's opinion on the way we work in the UK, especially concerning healthcare. As for the cynics, healthcare includes the word "care".
As a European I m curious to know what the US government spends taxes on. Could someone enlighten me ?
@@margheritacardelable weapons/military! at least this what stands out to me the most. US also has few social care programs such as medicare (healthcare when you're old) and medicaid (healthcare assistance when you're at poverty level) that American tax payers fund
Americans are great, warm, welcoming people and its a plus when an American is able or choses to live in Britain. The British people are generally kind and welcoming and have a good sense of humour while Americans bring energy, optimism, clear communication which compliments some of the qualities of the British. So its win -win for both. Another huge advantage to living in the UK Is its proximity to Europe with most of Europe being less than a 2 hour flight away or a 3 hour train journey to places like Paris or Amsterdam. You also generally have 4-6 weeks annual holiday and can travel back to the US 2-3 times / year.

I didn't have children till I was 45, my wife's 7 years younger and know exactly what you mean, both parties have to be ready as its the biggest commitment your ever going to make. Take your time and enjoy life..
Being older and having kids has actually worked well for me, I think I bring far more to the table in that respect.
I’m a military wife & after 10 years, my husband and I sat down and discussed seriously for a few days about having children and we decided not to have children due to my husband said that he loves our life the way it is and he doesn’t want to share me with anyone: we have an amazing life and I’ve never done what society says I should be doing: I do my own thing. I wish the best for you

Sorry but it sounds like an unbalanced decision making process- you said you decided not to have children ‘due to your husband not wanting to share you with anyone and liking your life just the way it is now’ . What was your opinion on this ? You didn’t mention that . Your husband sounds selfish and your life won’t stay exactly the way it is now - things change over time, so you should not depend on that, no matter what he says now. I totally respect people not wanting children- but you sound as though you are being dictated to by him, this is a huge decision for a woman.

I did the opposite, i moved to the US to get married a long time ago and it didn’t work out. I’m now in my late 50’s (no kids ) and remarried for 25 years. I’m glad to hear you’re in a good position mentally and physically. I still miss things in the UK after all this time.
I moved from Inner South East London just 2 miles, in one direction, from Brixton and Peckham and just over 2 miles the other way from Central London and though I only moved 10 miles to The Outer S E London/Kent Suburbs in 1983 I STILL miss the vibe and stimulation of the heart of London to this day though it is not difficult to return as I am only 1/2 mile from a London Postal District.

Hello M8. I have lived 50 yards from Danson Park since I moved 38 years ago. I love the area and everything about it though it has changed a little.
I might be going back to Waterloo this weekend and b4 Covid went back regularly as I miss the S E London vibe as I lived over East Lane market next to The Walworth Road and was used to thousands of people nearby so I STILL find it quiet. We can easily get out into Kent,Surrey and Sussex, as well.

If I moved I would miss the Comedy, Banter,Theatre,Football,Wimbledon.The Open Golf, Cricket,Horse and Greyhound Racing, The Countryside.
I would miss England's Green and Pleasant Land and the rest of the beautiful UK. Easy access to France,Spain,Italy and Europe generally. Our 4 seasons.
Bluebells,Primroses and Daffodils and Summer Flowers. London where I was born 67 years ago. Kew Gardens,Hampstead Heath,Richmond Park,The South Bank, Central London, Notting Hill,Kensington,Camden. Easy access to The Home Counties and 1,000 other things...:)
I have always been convinced I didn't want children and when I was younger lots of people told me I would change my mind.
Well, I will be 49 this year and I never changed my mind and I have no regrets whatsoever.
No disrespect to those who do have children, but parenthood isn't for all of us.
Me too. I'm 60 never saw myself as a father figure. I'm so grateful I didn't have to go through all that child-rearing. If I had, I might have an adult child living with me now - ergh! I know I'd have the same feelings, even if I wasn't Gay!
It's so much better to know what you want. I married someone older who wanted children. I didn't feel ready but compromised and had three kids. After my spouse had some issues with addiction he decided that he needed a new start and I was left to raise my kids on my own. It's so much better for people to say no from the beginning than to decide afterwards that parenthood is interfering with their life.
Between myself & my 2 siblings I always thought I'd be either the childless one, or having children later on in life. But, as it turned out, I was the first & I have 2 children - both adults now & parents themselves. My sister had a child a few months after my 2nd was born, and she is now a grandmother.
Our brother & oh, who are amazing with kids, chose (for their own, private reasons) to not have children!

My daughter is 28 and doesn’t want children either. I had another child two years ago and she now says, her mind will never ever change lol
As a mother of 3, I totally get that you don't want to have children. Motherhood completely changes the focus of your life, and not everyone needs to want that for them. I live in a different city than the rest of my family, and even though I am just a few hours away, I really empathise with you in many of the things you said. I'm glad you are much happier now. I lived in Europe for 6 years. I understand about your life disappearing after some time. When I came back, everyone’s life had moved on. We didn’t connect as much because I had all these new experiences. Some stayed but some left.

Jess, I’ve been following your videos for several months now, as we plan a family trip to London. They always impress me as especially generous. Both in your efforts to present top opportunities, and in the way you invest your self and presenting them. This particular video outdoes them all. Again, very generous, but also notably brave. You put it out there for others to learn from (or even share their own experiences or attempts at advice). If we live right, we’re learning all the way. You have so much to offer, and surely so many great things ahead of you. Enjoy it all.
Ah the 'C Word', children. Thankfully, I came around to the idea that my wife didn't want children and 25 years on, we are still together. We were pressured by family, but we stuck to our guns and remained childless. I really hope that you thrive in your new life. This is a great video, thank you.
Good for you. I was always told that I'd change my mind later on. Nope! I turned down a proposal because he wanted kids and l did not. Now married to a guy who didn't want kids either. 15 year anniversary pretty soon. People should stop pressuring others into making horrible decisions. The pressure is horrific, especially for those who are gullible. I just tell them to piss off and mind their children :-).

You are entitled to not regret your children, I'm entitled to understand my own thoughts and feelings and make a decision based on it. It's incredibly rude and insulting for you to say, especially when it has absolutely no bearing on you or anyone, except for the children I WON'T have because I wouldn't be a happy person for them if I did! Have a look at a bunch of the other commenters on this video and you'll see plenty of people who are older and haven't regretted not having children for one second, and maybe take some time to reflect on why you are so sure that a woman will feel upset at not becoming a mother and why it has made YOU so upset.
We never had kids, 1) couldn't afford it 2) too immature 3) didn't want the responsibility 4) scared .
We are now 62/75 years old and have NO regrets and are weathy because we saved so much money.

I feel sorry for you, I also didn’t want children in the beginning but after I had children I now wouldn’t want to be without them. Believe me, on your deathbed you’re not getting any love from your bushels of cash,you’ll want someone there who loves and cares for you, and for most people that means their children and grandchildren.

I am a divorce survivor so take it from me -- look at this as a new chapter in your life. Sometimes certain people and certain relationships are only meant for a certain time in our lives. And that's okay. You made the right decision. If you know you don't want children (and that's okay!), you are being responsible in not giving in to someone else's wishes and having children for him.

I am 31, I have followed you ever since you first started this channel, not consistently recently though since I have made the choice to be on social media less in the last 4 yrs. I popped up on here to check on what you've been doing lately and it's a shock to see where you were at before to you being single now. But it's a good shock. I'm saddened that you went through a divorce, but I'm glad you are still able to live in London and continue your work despite all the hardships, and on your own it makes everything much harder but also more rewarding because you're doing everything for you. You're very lucky to continue to do what you want to do, but I know it's your own determination that keeps pushing you. There were many struggles but you're still doing you. It's crazy to see how much one can grow from a carefree 23 yr old to an experienced 31 yr old. I'm super proud of you, girl.

Well, I’m delighted to have discovered your channel! I’m glad you shared where you have been on your external and internal journey. More importantly, I’m so glad you are beginning to understand the ‘value’ of your own life, and you are enjoying it. I married young. Fell in love with my in-laws and extended family, not so much my husband, I fell out of love with him! Marriage took up most of my 20’s. The sad thing for me about all of this was I am and have been all my life, a diehard Anglophile (maiden name-)Browning) and I studied Romance languages all through school. Eight years of French, two of Italian and Spanish. I have never been to England, anywhere in Great Britain, or Europe. Approaching 70 now, for a variety of reasons I don’t think I will be able to travel now. The reason I share aspects of my story is that I want you to use that information to have a larger appreciation for where you are at this point in your life other than just from your own perspective or that of your friends. I don’t know you, but from watching your face through the entire piece I’d say your do understand that there are good and bad aspects to everything in life-APPRECIATE what you have been able to do on your own. Too many people marry far too young before they know themselves at all. Now, I follow blogs from people all over the world. In particular at the moment, people living in France. You are the very FIRST person in Britain I have found (do you think of yourself as an American ex-pat, or consider that contrived) that I have found to be willing to share who you are evolving to become. All I can say is YOU GO GIRL! Your family may miss you but they should also be so proud of your ability to recover and rebuild. I am SO looking forward to watching many more entries on your channel, I am a new follower!

I spent a total of 6 years in London when I was growing up (I was a Military Brat). London is still my favorite city and it is not even close.

Divorce is a traumatic experience. We all change as we get 'older'. Life is full of challenges and we need friends but we also need our own 'space'. I trust that you go forward and are appreciated and respected for who you are. London is a 'fast paced' city but also has numerous green spaces and beautiful parks and historic buildings.

As a Brit living in the US, I relate to you on so many levels although, after so many years here, I miss home more and more. Plus I miss having access to London, easy trips to other cities (no flying involved) and trains. For a nice beach, you should go to Sandbanks near Bournemouth or better still, Cornwall. Hey, new business idea, FroYo by weight:) Also, I recently lost my job, it's terrifying not to have decent healthcare to fall back on and it's such an expensive hassle to find coverage that won't rip you off somehow.

Thanks for sharing your story! I love the UK and hope to make it back there someday. I can’t imagine moving out there and being all alone and starting from scratch too - that must take some pretty incredible strength. I struggle with social anxiety and although I would love to travel more the thought of traveling alone in a foreign place is tough for me - so I really appreciate videos like yours that make me feel more comfortable about planning and getting a feel for what’s around.

As an American I’ve watched you on and off for years between my handful of trips to London. Where I always wanted to live. Having grown up in Boston. I also decided in my late 20’s I didn’t want children because I really loved my (demanding) career. And I felt you can’t do both well. My husband went along. I just want you to know that decades later we are both still comfortable with our decision.

Very honest! I'm glad you are well. I went through the same - being in a foreign country losing a bunch of family (his - which I loved) and friends - it is a hard process. I hear you about health care - living in the US for 25 yrs - always having health insurance - but still struggling with high bills - it's detrimental!

I’m originally from St. Albans in Hertfordshire and often visited London with my mates. I now live in Switzerland and love it here and I’m taking my 17 year old son for the first time to London. Thanks for all the information you have given us on what to do and what not to do. I also wanted to say that it was refreshing to hear you being so positive about London, keep up the good work!
I moved to southeast Ireland by myself at 62 years old from Michigan 6 years ago. I could never go back, but I do miss Jif peanut butter, noisy beautiful thunderstorms, and baseball…
Do you mind me asking - how bad are the taxes? I am considering the same in a few years.
@@CydnieDaniel My house taxes (property tax in US) are about €100 a year. There are no additional taxes on purchases. The VAT (value added tax) is built in to prices, so if I find a pair of trousers and the price tag says €20, I pay exactly €20. I cannot talk about tax on earnings as I moved here to retire, but I haven't heard any complaining. The only complaints I hear from youtubers who've moved to Ireland are from the people who try to live in Dublin. City living is über expensive everywhere.

@@vickifenlon2235, thank you for your time! I would also be retired. I hear “stay in the US” or you will pay extra in retirement on top of what you pay US. I am trying to research, but not much out there.
@@CydnieDaniel the feds (SSA) are happy to deposit my soc sec check into my Irish bank account. I do still file US taxes because I receive a state pension. I have enough deducted before payout, that I get part of it back each year. I have never been in a more secure financial position in my life…
Regarding choosing not to have children- I’m thrilled I didn’t have children & have never regretted my decision- hope you do too! Exploring the world is what I invested in & have had a wonderful life!

To me, a European in NYC for 20 years, many “expat” perspectives that you describe sound very familiar, including going through the changes in one’s relationship life and all the emotional aspects that come with them. I applaud you for sharing your reflections in such fair and candid fashion.
Jess, it was so fun to hear about your last eight years in London. My husband and I lived there for 8 years due to his job and I loved every minute of it! We travelled all over visiting all the wonderful places outside the city many times. Transportation in London is fab thus not needing a car. And, it was so easy to travel to Europe - Paris for a weekend made my American friends envious! I made friends through the American expat community and had a couple of English and Australian friends. We lived in Canary Wharf where my husband’s job was and it was great. I miss it very much and we plan to go back next year for a visit. Hopefully, the city will be back to normal again. I can relate. My divorce was finalized November of last year and now that a lot of restrictions are being lifted in many places I plan on doing some traveling. I plan on going to London by myself in May. Flight and hotel are booked. I’ve watched all of your videos especially the solo trip one and I feel more confident in how I want to experience the city. You need to get yourself with some mates in a car, drive down to North Cornwall (South West England) for some of the most beautiful beaches. The drive is long but the rewards are amazing

I am from southern Europe living in London and the disconnection you had 4 years into living here is what I have been feeling too! It is so true that your friendships back home and other relationships start to weaken and people do not understand. Also feel disconnected here in London neither I have a group of friends. I am glad you said this as it felt like a comfort to me as someone like you understands! :) I am on your side thinking you don't want children! Hi, if I have to be completely honest. This was one of my very favorite videos. Because I got to know you better. I am very envious of your position of being able to live in London and am so supportive of you and all that you do. From my perspective (I have a few years on you) you are going to thrive and conquer. Thanks for sharing all of this and if I am able (covid restrictions) I would love to grab a cup of tea or just say hello when I come to London late this year. It is my most favorite place in the world and to share that perspective, with someone that lives it and appreciates it and is making a living out of your passion. I am so sorry for your pain in the past few years. Divorce really does suck. But, you stood fast to what you wanted in life. I know you are not at the point to say "everything happens for a reason". You are not wrong for your decision. Children are not something to gamble on, and unless you're 100% into having children, it's best to not have them. My husband and I are childfree, and that's the only reason we can afford to go to London. You're an amazing person.

Love the easy going nature in which you describe your time over here and that you don’t attempt to always compare London with New York. I have lived in both and can say that whilst they have much in common, they are also quite different and are great places in their own right. By the time I was 23 I had two children. It was hard and we lived in a few countries - now we live in Australia and I have three grandchildren. I lost my 12 year old son when he fell from a tree. I don’t regret having children but I wouldn’t bring children into this World now.

Bless your heart, i have to say I am so greatful ive had no children now, I love children and that is why I chose not to have any ; i think it is eminently unfair to bring children in right now; the future is too unsure and the next generations are going to have a difficult time adjusting to climate change.

I studied in London and stayed to teach in secondary schools. I then worked in computing so spent 10 years in central London. I moved to Cambridge with lower pollution and a slower pace of life. I found in London friends were at the far ends of a tube journey and now they are over 30 minutes drive away and tied up with their immediate family. I do miss the choices and available of a wide range of food from all over the world.
Thank you for sharing your difficulties with your previous marriage. I appreciate how open you are here on this video as it takes guts to sharing something so personal on TH-cam. I'm from HK but grew up in London. I returned to the city 5 years ago after starting my career in Asia. This city is amazing but it does take some getting used to for a while as the English are not known to warm up to strangers quickly. I agree that having a community of friends that are your own is definitely very important. I am glad that you did not choose to leave London because of your divorce. I certainly know people who would want to leave behind a place that in their mind is not home and strongly associated with an unhappy time.

Felt this. I'm a Brit that moved to America for a woman but we broke up because I didn't want kids and wanted to move back to England because of muppets with guns and healthcare. For the rest, I am sorry to hear about the end of your marriage. I am also sorry to hear about the isolation that somehow you experienced when moving to a different country.
I moved to Belgium about 10 years ago, I am from Rome. Weather, culture, food, everything was different, and even today I feel the difference. I moved here as reaction after breaking up with my first gf, and suddenly I was alone, friends stopped texting, and yes, I experienced the same as you. My family always supported me, as well as few real friends, but the latter also tended to disappear in time.
I have met some more Italian friends in Belgium, but the relationships are not the same as what I used to in Italy, also because of the different life style and work duties.
I have been so lucky to meet here my wife (also Italian from Rome): I can guarantee that, besides love and trust, having the experience of previous “failures” helped us in recognising exactly what we wanted, and we started growing up together.
Keep your motivation high, your heart open and be aware of your needs: with your enthusiasm, visibility and surrounded by all the opportunities in London, you’ll pass this period and you’ll find the right person for your life.
