Thank you very much Miki and Def for this interview. As always, she was very open and candid, but I did notice the edits after some possible tricky responses, which is fair and fine. Lush has had a big part in my life as a person and as a musician, and reading her book was quite revealing, not only for understanding her life and where she came from, but also in what her songs represent.
I'm from Panama, in Central America, and my band Uva, just by chance, became a sort of lushesque thing: my guitar playing, my singing and my songs were very influenced by her, and the line up was even a bizarro Lush, with a female rhythm section and two male guitarists. We even had a Chinese drummer! (I know Miki is Japanese, but you know what I mean!).
And right from the Blind Spot EP, throughout Piroshka and now with MB3, she's writing her best music ever. Like Slowdive and Ride, their music and reputations have had a resurgence that has seen those musicians thrive again and be better than they were all those years ago. So happy endings, after all!
Check out what I mean about Uva:

When I first heard Gala in 1991 it was like a musical revolution in my mind.

Do tell! Would love to hear more. What about it felt so revolutionary to you? (Gala was my first exposure as well, and it was also in '91. As I mention in the video, the music takes me back!)

@@feedbackdef I also heard Loveless around the same time, and they both had that effect on me. I saw Lush the following year at Lolla (I mainly went for them). They were the first band, and opened with Sweetness and Light. That moment when the drums kicked in was life changing.

@@rong2912 That's awesome! Thanks for sharing. As you know if you watched the interview, I missed Lush at Lolla '92, which I'm still upset about.

Miki is very philosophical and intelligent. Her IQ must be in the 140+ range. Not surprising considering her father was a Jewish journalist, and herJapanese actress mom.

Thirty years ago, yhea, you could let your 10 yr. old go out and ride the London tube without too much concern. A couple of things have changed since then, shall we call them Elephants In The Room?

I used to be a huge lush fan, and still have all thier albums and singles, I never paid any attention to any interviews in over 25 years, I, only loved the music and album artwork. This is the first Lush interview I have heard in 25 years, but I never thought of Miki as behaving like a total trash chav, very disappointing, she never used to never speak and curse this way. She used to be so well spoken and intelligent, and personable. She is very talented and a brilliant musician, but her demeanor now is that of a very bitter and sad person

Very bizarre take; I've listened to a lot of interviews with her and have never walked away thinking she seemed "bitter" -- perhaps you need to shed your puritanical views regarding dropping f-bombs.

I'm sure this is always who she was but couldn't say on tv these words on mtv in th 90's. But I sort of understand your comment like I was watching Slash on Jonesy's Jukebox years ago and it's like dude you are clean and sober and the guy from the Sex Pistols has to remind you not to curse repeatedly on public radio?
