I can watch videos all day about how great the van life is but I'm hard pressed to find one that will tell me why they gave it up. I understand why one wouldn't want to talk about that topic, but I believe it would be a great contribution to those who are thinking about this lifestyle and refuse to fantasize about it.

Ryan Boundless Here is my why I gave it up story...I lived in a van like very much like this one for 5 of the 6 summers I owned it. Actually, May to Nov. I worked a traveling job that had me busy and as I zig zagged across the country I got to see a ton and do a ton. It was great until you get tired of doing stuff alone (or just with your dog), and great as long as there was decent weather. My Novembers were spent in FL and Az. When the time changes and you are stuck indoors more cause it is dark it pretty much sucks. So does, driving, parking, camping in the snow in Colorado which is my primary home. That is why in the winter I did not do it. I stopped altogether cause I was tired of the alone life, and after 80,000 miles my 2008 sprinter (which I sold at 146000 mi) was costing me more in towing and mechanicals than a place to rent. I/we now have a class c with a ford engine (way more places work on them and cost way less when work is needed). We do not live in it but spend A TON of time in it. It works nicely in all seasons for me, bf and two med dogs. :)

Eric Baker mine was a dodge with a Mercedes engine...it just kept breaking down. And $1000 to tow it for $125 computer rest was just too much for me after it happened 3 times. Dealer is the only one that could do the reset.

Hi, the most difficult part is making the decision! We, did the same thing, sold gear, got to basics, bought a van and went fishing all around New Zealand for a year. Lived off the land, sea, rivers and lakes. Great experience with memories for life. I now know why the Kiwi calls this country "God's Own" !!!

If you live like this you should have alternative plans if you become sick. I am in shape and was really active with sports and skiing and I became very sick. I had to have a number of operations with many days living in a hospital. Lucky I have health insurance and a home I worked hard for but all I am saying before adventuring out make sure you are able to support yourself if something unfortunate happens in your life or you have a relative you can live with.

This lifestyle is great - but make sure you plan for old age. My brother lived in a boat until he became ill - totally impracticable, as would van living.
No if you look at retired people .... there are thousands in RVs now ... many sell everything and migrate all over the US.
That's when you sell the van and live with family or go to a nursing home/assisted living.
Oh go live with family who worked 9-5 and planned for their future old age. Your plan is to piggyback on them and pay your share with stories of your adventurous life? Or nursing home assisted living at currently more than 3k a month? Rawk on! Nice life if you can swing it I guess....
lol I didn't say that was my plan but historically that's what most people do if you think about it. I don't plan on piggy backing on anyone if I can help it.

Your assumptions are incorrect. My SO loves to adventure just as much as I do. And after meeting her, we made plans for a m th long road trip through the Rockies. The pros you're seeing there are mostly from that trip. Would you believe me if I told you that she and I met while I was living in the van already!? She must have been crazy to fall for a guy living in a van. Turns out she's the good sort of crazy and we're already looking for a new project van for more adventures.

How do you take a shower, and get clean..!??
Most of the time I would shower at a , YMCA or Rec center. When I would be in one place for a while I'd simply pay the month membership. It's still cheaper than any rent! On the road I also have a solar bag shower that works surprisingly well.
some of these people should drive for uber to raise money. since you can make a lot of money doing it full time and he has little expenses
It's good that you've found the life you want for yourself, but the idea that you have to leave your possessions behind, or choose this over that in order to be happy, is nonsense. Different people find all sorts of things enjoyable and fulfilling. I enjoy great experiences and cool toys (possessions) and sometimes doing absolutely nothing. I love to travel and I also love chilling in my house and watching movies in my home theater. Personally, I'd never want to travel full-time, but when I'm in the proper mind-frame for it, nothing makes me happier. Finding the right balance between all aspects of life is the key to a happy and fulfilling existence. It's not a zero-sum proposition.
Good for you not going back to a 9-5 and living a good life doing things you enjoy and getting paid for it. I think you will be going through Withdrawal of Betty White once she is sold.
Thanks! I already am missing the vanlife but I see it as a temporary change. Betty has afforded me so many opportunities over the past year. The opportunity I have now to start a business of building a life of travel and adventure for others is one I cannot pass up!

That sounds pretty good for a van. What kind of vans do you know of that get much higher?

Well all our mpg is pretty pathetic compared to EU. They won't allow us to have the same really nice and high mpg diesel vehicles. Probably something to do with emissions nonsense.
And you could be right in that it is just a difference of gas vs diesel, so if they had diesel, they would get better mpg. I'm no van expert, I was just asking what kinds of vans would be better.
There is a 20 percent, aprox., difference between the U.S. gallon and Imperial, with the U.S. gallon being smaller. 20 mpg is excellent in U.S. gallons.
20 mpg is great for a large van like this, probably weighing several tons fully loaded. It depends mostly on the amount of weight on board, 4wd uses more fuel too.
