- In Book 8, Zeus forbids the gods from intervening in the conflict and declares that the day will favor the Trojans. From Mount Ida, Zeus uses his golden scales to weigh the fates of the two armies, tipping the balance in favor of Troy. Inspired by Zeus’ decree, the Trojans, led by Hector, drive the Greeks back toward their ships, gaining the upper hand in the battle.
Despite their struggles, the Greeks regroup, with Diomedes and Nestor leading a counterattack. However, when Zeus hurls thunderbolts at the Greeks, they are forced to retreat, further boosting Trojan morale. As night falls, Hector orders the Trojan army to camp on the battlefield, vowing to press their advantage the next day by burning the Greek ships. The book closes with the Greeks in despair, while the Trojans celebrate their newfound dominance under Hector’s leadership. This pivotal chapter demonstrates the Trojans' growing momentum and sets the stage for escalating tensions in the war.
The Iliad is one of the oldest and most celebrated works of Western literature, attributed to the ancient Greek poet Homer. Composed around the 8th century BCE, this epic poem is set during the final year of the Trojan War, a legendary conflict between the Greeks (Achaeans) and Trojans over the abduction of Helen. Rich in poetic imagery and timeless themes, The Iliad explores the wrath of Achilles, the futility of war, and the pursuit of honor and glory amidst the horrors of battle. This foundational text delves into human emotions, the influence of the gods, and the struggles of mortals against fate, making it a cornerstone of classical literature and a timeless exploration of human nature.
