    Every time a bike lane goes in anywhere, a bunch of locals freak out and make the same exact complaints. It's like a broken record. But then after a few months they forget about it and get used to it. Nobody ever says let's go back to what it was before. Fear of change?

    Public safety is not a popularity contest. We know that bike lanes enable children, adults, and the elderly to commute to their school, work, or errands safely. Everyone deserves safe mobility. The public right-of-way is not their own personal driveway.

    In September 2023, the community found out about the bike lane only after construction began. In October 2023, there was a community board meeting where hundreds of residents showed up to protest and the police had to get involved. There were numerous petitions. Local elected politicians cosigned a letter against the bike lanes. People literally put up ugly red yard signs in front of their homes. The NYCDOT went ahead anyways. Streets belong to the people. Car drivers want to use the whole street and bike riders want safe ways to travel on the street. Because it's public infrastructure the best way is to compromise. The people of the neighborhood would have been fine with sharing the road with bikes. The road was wide enough to fit two bike lanes, two driving lanes, and two parking lanes. For no logical reason, the city made the bike lanes enormous and removed parking on an entire side of the street. On some streets, parking was removed on both sides of the street. The people who lost parking on both sides of the street are trapped. These streets are lined with mostly single family homes and this is a suburban neighborhood. The neighborhood is generally very quiet with little car traffic except for the people who live in the neighborhood because there are no businesses here, only homes.

The road space may have not have been enough to accommodate two travel lanes two bike lanes and two lanes for car parking and so the parking should be sacrificed . That is fair because in the above scenario, 4 lanes are for automotive use and only two for bikes. If two have to go, it must be the two automobile parking lanes. The same boring and overused arguments that people against bike lanes use, ignoring every single study which shows how much bike lanes benefit a neighborhood compared to parking.
    Every house over there has a driveway, what are you complaining about?
    And you didn’t see it coming?
    The DOT makes many meetings, and publishes many documents explaining their plans. If you didn’t see it coming, it’s not the DOT’s problem
    “Nobody really uses them”, well, what should I say? The DOT is still building up a network, so allow the DOT to work and see how things change. In transportation planning there is a very simple phrase which applies to all modes of transportation, “if you build it, they’ll come”

    • @Veritech
      @Veritech 18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      - Which study are you referring to and how does it apply to this specific neighborhood?
      - So if a household has four people with four cars, where are the three other people supposed to go? What about if a guest comes over? Where is the guest supposed to go?
      - Quite literally at least 99% of the neighborhood had no idea about the bike lane until construction began. Why is that not the DOT's problem? That supports the idea that the DOT was trying to sneak it past the community. The community pays taxes and funds the DOT. This community pays more taxes than others.
      - It's been almost a year and still no bikes. Because where exactly would the bikes go? This is a residential neighborhood. There are no businesses here so unless the destination is to another person's house in the neighborhood, there is no reason for using this bike lane.

      1) Google “Protected bike lane statistics” and the first link from “people for bikes” will provide you with a multitude of studies, and their conclusions
      4) literally no household in NYC has 4 adults in it with 4 cars. A quick look at google maps shows guest can arrive by train as the bayside neighborhood has a station, or via the multiple bus line cris-crossing the neighborhood.
      3) Again, if 99%, which I assume is a made up statistic due to it’s implausibility, it is a they problem, as the DOT of New York constantly has community meetings and presentations, easily available online as well, which would allow you to voice your concerns. If they don’t bother to inform themselves on the current events in their neighborhood, it is their problem
      4) A quick look at google maps will show you that there are at least 2 schools along the bike lane, and 2 churches, which to you are not destinations? Additionally, multiple businesses can be found on parallel or perpendicular roads, which are thought not directly, still accessible via this bike lane, if you are willing to ride on a few neighborhood roads
