I used to hack so many MCI long distance codes as a teenager in the 80's. It was so easy for me.

Wow bought the system from pacific bell and not once did pacific bell tell them about security. It is crazy that att and pac bell wont admit they screwed up and instead say the business needs to pay them $300K. It would be different if the business had their own system, but they paid the phone company for the system.

Definitely not the 80's. End-to-end 56kb and Windows 3.11, use of the word 'hackers', video instead of film, and the clothing; give it away. The techs are also all very much early 90's.

@@The_Conspiracy_Analyst The computer the hacker was using was running ProComm on Windows 3.1 This was early 90s since Windows 3.1 was released in 1992.

the 80s still relied on film? interesting. didn't know that. good observation.

Back then I had a minimum wage job tracking that down at many companies. It was pretty prevalent. I was very good at shutting the scams down but the place that hired me to do it wouldn't give me a raise after a year so I left and only then realized how much more I could get paid elsewhere, for doing actual engineering. The place I left had no idea how to do what I did so the backlog of work just sat once I left. I think many companies were just content to take the losses on their taxes.

this was just the tip of the iceberg with phreaking. I was born too late but I seen a few things, even house lines were easy to take over in person

Esquire magazine. October, 1971. Article title: "Secrets of the little blue box" That made this stuff from the 1980s look very tame by comparison...

I won't admit to anything that might be used against me in a court of law but I dabbled in this scene in the early 90s and would never have done it for a profit. I did it for fun and to learn something interesting. There were a ton of Mexican and Puerto Rican kids in my school and I would help them call their friends back home but never asked for money, although I would accept a home cooked meal once in a while.

I immediately noticed that right off the bat. They didn't care about the monopoly power of the companies, just shaming people who dared take advantage of it a little bit. AT&T blaming that Alexon business guy...SMH.
Just like they cover your random crook who are a few hundred in lottery theft but not the billions stolen in wage theft.
