- Fertilizer burn happens from over applying or accidentally spilling too much high nitrogen fertilizer in one area at once. Fertilizer burn usually happens from synthetic fertilizers. If you see too much fertilizer piled up in one area try to remove as much you can as quickly as possible or you'll end up like this.

I’m new to lawn care, I made a silly mistake of fertilizing without a spreader, leaving large chunks of fertilizer in places. I had a ton of burn and the grass was clearly dead.
Followed this method in every spot seeding with KBG now my lawn is slowly coming back to life.
Thank you!
Yea it happens to all of us lol I made that same mistake before. 😅 I'm glad I could help you out thank you for your support
I've just done the same lol....I feel silly, but it seems like a common mistake!

Great video! Thanks for showing how to repair the problem. Many videos just talk about the issue and how to correct it but don't demonstrate how to actually repair the grass problem.

Great video. I just had new sod installed and using a Scott's spreader with a non-Scott's fertilizer lead to laying down way too much fertilizer and now have fertilizer burn. Good video--appreciate you walking it through step by step. The only thing I would have liked to have seen was the after. Maybe do a quick little clip from a few weeks after this process. But, over all, awesome video!
What kind of grass seed did you use and also do you have a video showing an update on the grass?
I used Turf type tall fescue by Greenview
I have plenty of videos on my channel about lawn care.
Thank you
I over fertilized kentucky bluegrass about 2 weeks ago. I there are several burns, I see some parts coming back. I have watered burned spots most every day. Is now a good time to remove burn spots, lay top soil, and re-seed? I live in the northeast

Excellent video. Just put down new lawn rolls and over fertilised them. Thought I would have to buy new ones, gonna try this method. Subscribed!
Thank you
Very nicely explained and done. Great results with this method.
Just torched sections of my lawn. So a question: if you create a new seed bed can you put the new seed bed down immediately after having applied the weed and feed? The ever helpful instructions say wait a month.
Yea you have to wait because those parts of the lawn that were burned are still considered Hot. So you have to atleast 2 or 3 weeks to see the final damage the weed and feed did.
Great stuff and good looking lawn. Way to rep 👍🏿💪🏿
I appreciate it bro ✊🏾
Thank you so much! You've been wonderful help for Me! I lost my Mother. She took care of the lawn maintenance and knew what to do. I'm here still learning at home. I don't know what I'm doing and I messed up areas of my lawn and burnt the grass. ☹️ What kind of grass seeding do you recommend??
Sorry for your loss 🙏🏾. What area you leave in?
@LawnAmateur Thank you! ❤️ I live in Suffolk County which is Long Island, New York.
@aliciajames7207 Ok, you can use Scotts commercial or contractors mix either one are good. Both have a good variety. You can get it from Walmart, Home Depot, or Lowe's. I hope this information helps

The trick is that I'm left handed 🤣🤣🤣. Thank you for your support I appreciate it
Great video. What if I have a larger area of fertilizer burn instead of scissors can I just mow the affected area of the lawn to get most of the yellow grass out?
Yes mowing is best option for larger area
@@LawnAmateur thanks
Last week I was walking across my lawn with a spray tank of roundup. For some reason wbile momentarily stopping in the middle of the lawn I squeezed the spray trigger and 4 days later my lawn had a spot exactly like yours. In my case I chose to take a 6 inch round grass plug from my lawn next to the woods, dug the yellowed and dead area out and inserted the grass plug and watered. You would never know. Instant gratification. I fixed the hole made from the removed plug at the lawns edge in the same manner as you did yours with the addition of a slight amount of starter fertilizer.. You are doing very well with your lawn. I'm sure BYD is pleased.
By the way, how is your front lawn doing?
I did the same thing a while back lol smh. That was a smart move to plug the area from the back lawn. The front lawn is doing great.
Nice video! Straight and to the point!
I accidentally burned some spots on my lawn too...thanks for the tips.
No problem thank you for watching
Thanks for the info! The fertilizer bag recommended waiting 30 days before reseeding. Can I speed that up a little if I'm doing extra watering?
You can try reseeding in about 10 days
Great video. I performed this task today. Worked very well.
Thank you I'm glad I could help
Thanks for the info. I just went out and used my Garden Weasel Rotary Cultivator to break up the soil, put down some bagged top soil, tossed some Titan RX Tall Turf fescue, weaseled, put out some peat moss, weaseled some more, tossed out some more seed, weaseled some more and gave a good drink of water. I had my yard looking great, but the wife looked out the window and said, what is that spot in the middle of the yard? So I had to take action!!!
🤣🤣 that'll do it once they point out that slight imperfection you have to go out and take action immediately because it'll continue to stand out from that point on
@@LawnAmateur no doubt. I saw it yesterday and just hoped it would go away!!! I have switched or I am going to attempt to switch to an all liquid diet for my lawn. Will see how this season goes. My first application was granular but I have to get off the mower to open the spreader and by time I get on and take off, it has dropped a pile.
I just burned my lawn like 4-5 spots but it is already Sept, I think I will do next spring lol.
I have three dogs I have a 5 gallon bucket full of seed and another 5 gallon bucket full of peat on standby at all time. Water, drop fill and water all summer long. I feel you!
I have big patches throughout my lawn , what’s the best method. I had beautiful grass, it’s ruined thanks
Are they fertilizer burn spots?
Thank you! I live in NC (getting 80 and 90F). Can I repair fertilizer burned grass now or should I wait till the Fall?
You can repair it now if it's just a spot. Just keep it moist
Great informative video. I have Kentucky Bluegrass. What is the best seed to buy for my type of grass?
Thank you. Scotts, Pennington, are the top in store brands. Then you have Expert Garden (walmart brand), Vigoro (Home Depot brand). Then you have the high end grass seed brands Jonathan Green, and Greenview thats what I use. There's plenty others also but I just named a few and it all depends on what your budget is and willing to spend. But its all about your maintenance and care for the lawn to enhance your overall appearance. I'm sorry about the long reply. I hope this helps
@@LawnAmateur thank you 😊. Should I only use Kentucky Bluegrass seeds or a mix? For instance Kentucky and Rye? If so, what should the ratio be? Sorry for all the questions
@tamarajenkins3035 the questions are ok lol. You can do a mixture they have bags already pre mixed with Kentucky bluegrass, Ryegrass and Fescue or like you said Kentucky bluegrass/ryegrass. These are some of the best grass varieties because you'll have more than one grass type in the yard and thats good when it comes to say diseases or fungus. One grass type may be stronger than the other at fighting off disease so if you did catch a disease your whole lawn wouldn't be destroyed. So having a variety mixed lawn is a major plus
Thank you so much
Could you please provide the links of the products that you used in this video? Also, Can I also repair the burn spots in my lawn?
I'm working on getting links to the products. You can use this method for burn spots also
@@LawnAmateur Thank you !
Great tips! I’ll try this out on a spot that I got heavy handed with.
Thank you
Is it necessary to put down the top soil? Can you put the seed on the bare ground then cover it with moss or straw? Thanks!
No you don't need top soil. You can just break up the current soil and throw down seed and cover it lightly with moss or straw and you'll be fine.
I was hoping for an follow up video :( I have really bad fertilizer burns. Thanks for sharing
I will do an update soon
What do you do for winter with your liquid fertilizers bring inside to basement or leave in garage or shed
I store everything in my basement during the winter
@@LawnAmateur me too bags i leave in garage in 50 gal drum last yr i didn't realize i had so much liquid going to start moving them this week except for a few I'll use yet thanx
Great video! Very detailed and thorough.

Soooo I fertilized my entire yard front and back… whole yard burned😞🤦🏽♀️. It’s been about three weeks, it has rained pretty good here (Alabama) but still brown. HELP!!!
If the lawn is brown or has a yellowish tent and doesn't have a dry crunchy feel then It'll regrow as long as you keep watering it. If its brown, feel crunchy and dry then you'll probably have to reseed because the roots may be dead. Take a walk in the lawn and touch those spots to get a better idea.
@@LawnAmateur Will do, thanks for responding😊
What seeds did you use ?
Thanks 🙏
I used turf type tall fescue by Greenview
Can you lay down grass clippings on top instead of Petemoss?
I wouldn't do that because the grass clippings can smother out the grass seeds especially if laid too thick. Peat moss will help the grass seeds germinate by holding moisture
@@LawnAmateur thanks
Your method is so much better than mine. I opted for nuking it...not from orbit, but all up close & personal. Thanks for this. I have decided to feed my lawn steak & caviar. (It eats better than I do) . I thought I had spots in my yard that I was not watering enough. Come to find out? She just got to hot & couldn't handle the heat & kitchen! I am just gonna throw ice cubes on her till she decides to chill.

Should i plant new seed without fertilizer added?
I do. I like plant my grass seed 1st and then come back 7-10 later and put fertilizer down
Did you add a slow release organic fertilizer later on?
I was using Scott's lawn food

@@stereohuda twice a day for the next 2 weeks

How soon should you see grass?? In the spring?
It depends on what grass seed was planted and the temperature. Some grass varieties take longer to germinate but you could see germination 7-10 after planting in optimal weather but it could take as long as 21 days also

How do I know what seed to
Get for my lawn?
It all depends on where you live. Most lawns where I live are a mixture of fescue, Kentucky bluegrass, and ryegrass.
Just what I needed!
This exact same thing happened to me ): thanks for the video!
No problem 👌🏾
Nice job. I'm curious as to why you didn't just dig out the burned area, as opposed to using scissors.
Just to cut down the tall grass to even it out. Instead of digging it out and having to replace the whole area because sometimes the burnt grass can repair itself if its not burnt too bad.
@@LawnAmateur Thanks again.
Do you water it after the pest moss?
Yes you water after peat moss
Great video! I was about to jack up my yard until I found this video.
Lol. Thanks I'm glad I could save you the trouble
I burned my lawn. How.long does it take to recover if I don't overseed those areas?
