@@simonerz8248 Ending a manga doesn't mean that the mangaka run out of ideas (at least not every time). In case of Kimetsu no Yaiba, Promised neverland or Ansatsu no Kyoshitsu, the mangaka had a clear ending in mind and just told everything they wanted to. One piece focuses more on the adventure, and as such it can tell a much longer story. All the others had a very clear objective - be it Killing Muzan, killing kori-sensei or freeing humanity from demons. Finding the one piece is more vague, so it can expand with sagas to reach that objective that is not that clear how to do so.

Chainsaw Man is literally the only shonen I've ever read or watched that actually feels like it was planned from the get-go. Fujimoto said what he wanted to say, then dipped out. So, so many stories, particularly in a medium that highly encourages long-running stories, feel excruciatingly drawn out. Chainsaw Man feels like it was meticulously thought-out, so Fujimoto's only job during its actual run was to draw it.
Yeah, people say that it was rushed, but I think it had exactly the time fujimoto needed to show WHAT is Chainsaw Man. Some people even think part 2 was just a jump push and Fujimoto wasn't intending to do it, but I think the mand knows what he's doing considering since the end of the series he said it would have 3 parts in total.

When One Piece ends, it will actually mean an Age of opportunity for the small time series, as Jump will drastically reduce its standards. Allowing some series that normally would've been Axed to continue. There are some series that have been able to turn into relatively popular series that way. Then again One Piece still has around 5-10 years to end, so i am sure some unexpected hit will come in that time.

What this video showed me is that the quality of the anime adaptation can really define a series. Doctor Stone received a good enough anime adaptation that relied mostly on the writing quality of the original material, and as a result the series got a modest increase in sales. Promised Neverland received a great anime adaptation and as a result managed to crack the top 3, and even outsell Naruto at its peak. And then finally Kimetsu no Yaiba received one of the best anime adaptations ever and thus managed to even sell Shonen God One Piece. Please let the Act-Age adaptation be good!!
Act-Age is the hard one to adapt in my oppinion. You need strong staff who know about acting and theater (ill give this to Furukawa Tomohiro. He still a new guy but doing a great job with anime base on theater called Revue Starlight) + strong cast. Im affraid to see galatic railroad theater crumbled down :(.

Chainsaw Man always makes me feel some type of way. Sometimes is profoundly sad, other times is absolutely excited, the next chapter is a deeply nostalgic feeling. I love that it never leaves me indifferent to it, making me feel things beyond the excitement for the actions scenes. An oft cited mark of a good artist is the creative compulsion to move forward. Whether it be improvements or sheer experimentation, for them to look backwards and like what they saw, it must strike a very personal chord, even under its rough condition.
If you like Chainsaw Man, be sure to also check out Fire Punch, an older manga from the same author, about a guy who's set on fire with a magical flame that never goes out until it burns through its fuel, but, because he can continuously regenerate, he's constantly on fire and cannot die from it. After a few excruciating years spent getting used to the pain, he regains his bearings and starts wandering the land looking for revenge. It's one of my faves.

I remember when my social media was flooded with articles about how Demon Slayer topped One Piece and how controversial it was. Half my friends were arguing that they were happy to see one piece drop, and the other half claiming demon slayer didn't deserve it. So i did explain on my podcast that the annual sales of a newly popular series does not equate over a decade of success and with demon slayer wrapping up it means it will never do what one piece did. I am happy to see a youtuber i admire talk about this exact subject in a way that does not feel bias to either series.

The thing is that too many animes just adapt the manga without making the real work of making it fit as an anime first of all. As much as I dislike the anime of Black Clover at least it's trying to be it's own thing by imitating the long runners of old (and one piece) and even if I think that the low pace breaks the charm that it keeps with it's troupe heavy use it makes it a work of it's own and a good gateway for younger audiences.

I feel like Chainsawman has been great so far because it fixes a lot of the problems that Fire Punch had around pacing and plotting. It feels much more straightforward, way less meandering, and has a clear and concise goal for its main characters both externally and developmentally. I think as a result it's much stronger since, in my opinion, Fire Punch was way too nihilistic to be enjoyable. Chainsawman tempers its cynicism with genuine empathy and care for its characters along with more humor to make the story a lot more palatable. It's been a great improvement on Fire Punch so far especially in the pacing department.
Fire Punch wasn't trying to be a shounen series at all though, its entire point was its nihilism. I still consider it one of my favorite manga of all time largely because of its highly subversive nature, trying its hardest at pretty much all times to drag away from the main story to become commentary on media and emotions, completely evading traditional story structure at seemingly all costs. Its definitely rough around the edges and its inherent subversive nature makes it really hard to digest, but I found it to be very powerful and wouldn't have it any other way.
@@EEEdoman Dude, chapter 45 ("become the fire punch for me") is probably the hardest I've ever been hit by a chapter. Series went from balls to the wall horrific, to just plain horrific. Fujimoto is an under-rated master.
@@EEEdoman I acknowledge the experimental qualities of Fire Punch as very interesting stuff to discuss, but I'm not sure if the rejection of common storytelling stuff actually served the story in any meaningful way. I also dont think it's a shonen at all, it's very clearly a seinen, but I'm more focused on the meta plot of the story (as you said the media stuff) and how it kind of overtook the story itself. It certainly made it different, but at the cost of hurting a really interesting premise. Especially when it started to become really meandering around the end.
i'm going to still say: Demon Slayer would have not been popular if they made Nekuzo his girlfriend/fiancee. It's because it's his sister that everyone can sympathize with Tanjiro about his goal to cure his sister.
Lol, nah. Although I think that helps in Japan since part of the reason demon slayer was so popular is because it holds the Japanese culture value or something like that. Also, ufotable.
Can’t believe I teared up because of chainsaw mans mention. Such an underrated king of manga, didn’t understand why I felt so much emotion when I was initially reading it. When Denji asked what was breakfast I couldn’t help but cry abit. Thanks for letting more people know of this great manga
Doctor Stone's recent arc was great and concluded really well. It does a great job of not losing focus of its themes. Anyway Chainsawman more than deserves top 10 status, hope it gets there this year. It reminds of some of my favorite aspects of BLEACH, but more than that, it's just really well written and paced. The way that Denji finally overcomes the Samurai Sword/Katana Devil is the best I've read in shonen in a long time--the means of defeating him is something foreshadowed, doesn't have to be explained to the reader, and makes genuine sense while being really clever and cool. If the same team over at BONES that animated Mob Psycho 101 could do an adaptation of Chainsawman, I'd lose my mind.
I've long seen Promised Neverland as the proper descendant of Death Note, and hope that more tightly plotted stories will turn up in the future. But my current favourite title is Act Age for precisely the reasons is baffles Wolf; it is low stakes compared to The Fate of The World, but it is emotive like nothing else, has some layered and surprising characterization, and progression is tied to how you use the techniques given rather than pulling a new ability or transformation out of the air.
I'm slightly dissapointed of TPN progression after the first arc but considering that was all that was pre planned it was clearly hard to write a weekly work while hidding hints so well (and actually made it an even more accurate Death Note's descendant and hope the next work does better. Sadly Jump's push to stop fan translations have made me harder to me to put the effort of getting into series one doesn't start in the first chapers (and after Sensei no Barrage getting axed while Nisekoi empty harem continued I stopped trying to get into everything as it started).

In the end, I don't think we'll ever get such a world in Shonen Jump like that from One Piece. I’ve been consuming One Piece content officially for 10 years this year since back when I was in middle school, and it’s started to truly dawn on me just how different life will feel and how different the Shonen landscape will be once One Piece is finally over. Nothing will ever be the same, but one thing is for certain, One Piece will always be legendary and irreplaceable.
It's the only series in the top 5 that has the potential to go on long-term. Haikyuu is ending soon, Kimetsu no Yaiba is ending soon, Promised Neverland is ending soon, pretty much all the juggernauts are ending in 1 or 2 years max.
Comics do the weird thing where they never end and everything is meaningless in the end. Manga are singular stories which don’t have to worry about universe canon so much

And amazingly enough there had been many opportunities to turn this around and make it into a compelling story all throughout, but it just had to pick the dullest resolution for any plot point.

My biggest hope for future Shonen Jump hits is Act-age for sure. Act-age is telling a narrative in a more complex manner than almost anything else in the magazine. The Galactic Railroad arc is a storytelling marvel on par with the multi-layered narrative of things like Rakugo Shinjuu. Assuming that enough stock gets put in the series to allow a stellar adaptation, I can see the series reaching the edge of that top five threshold in a few years' time. I don't think it could ever truly break into the top five by virtue of it being totally devoid of any traditional action scenes (even The Promised Neverland has that in spades), but it's definitely one of the more exciting black sheep in the magazine along with Chainsaw Man.
@@explorerboy101 Remember that if it's unique and has good plot, it will be popular. Take TPN and Dr. Stone for example. People actually are thirsty for non battle shounen
I'd argue that two of the top 5 (Haikyuu and Promised Neverland) are also not battle Manga (though one of them is a sports Manga, but at least the first arc of promised neverland is very non-shounen like)
Dude, I love Fire Punch. I read it all in 2 days, and I was already reading Chainsawman when I found out it was from the same author, it just made me so happy
I can't overstate how many times I've re-watched this video. This one is only second to the one about Gantz. In specific, the segment at the end talking about Chainsaw man and how you sold me on such a series and how much I've come to love it. My love for the series causing me to go read Fujimoto's other work, Fire Punch, and how it makes me even more excited to see where CSM is going. I'm not one to keep up with manga or anime as a whole with my only interests going to the few series that have managed to catch my attention such as Berserk, Attack on Titan, HxH, and a few others. I would have never found this series if it wasn't for your passionate recommendation of it at the end and for that, I thank you.
I feel like out of the three shounen manga adapted animes of 2019, being The Promised Neverland, Demon Slayer and Dr.Stone. That Dr.Stone was completely given the short end of the stick when it came to the actual anime. Like the anime didn't use anything that the medium provided, nor to its full advantages like others, it was just so sad as a person who had high hopes for the anime, coming from the manga. They did get amazing voice actors and have detailed backgrounds for sure but for an anime that's based on a manga that doesn't really have much action, should have clean animation for the action.
I remember that the moment I decided I hated the adaption was when they got to the point where the ballerina woman attacked the village... and the animation was literally just a still frame over speed lines, with sound effects. That's the kind of thing I'd expect from the old style of shonen anime, where they adapted one episode a week forever and eventually ran out of budget and material. It would be one thing if they were saving the budget for sakuga during a later scene... but they weren't. It was just such a cheap, half-assed animation effort. Dr. Stone isn't a battle manga, but it deserved better than this.
Act-Age broke into the top 10! Many of Jump's newer titles are reaching the 100 chapter mark and following where they are going at that stage is a great time.
Loved the anime, but it wasn't much better than the manga. Demon Slayer's anime felt superior to the manga, Neverland's Anime was also excellent. Dr Stone's just didn't hinder the source material.
Its fascinating how the shounen manga of shounen jump are locked in a never ending shounen tournament arc of their own.

So i did explain on my podcast that the annual sales of a newly popular series does not equate over a decade of success and with demon slayer wrapping up it means it will never do what one piece did. I am happy to see a youtuber i admire talk about this exact subject in a way that does not feel bias to either series.
Yeah, I have the feeling that those people think DS sold more than one piece in general and not in a specific time period.
Yeah, Kimetsu topped one piece in 2019 by all their volumes because people started to buy it after the anime, on the other hand, One Piece only sold their new releases or new volumes and got 2nd place

Completed fire punch manga a month back, that shit gave me depression

@@niello5944 Yeah it kinda falls off as it goes imo. There was so much potential to tell a story of a very large scale but everything seems rushed for some reason
@@niello5944 Ditto. The first arc was a well-done psychological thriller that still was appropriate for the shonen audience.

At least Dr. Stone's adaptation was a LOT better than BC's. That adaptation straight up drove people away
@@veridian4433 true. It could be worse.
Veridian it’s unfortunate I love black clover I hate how studio perriot handles the show
I remember that the moment I decided I hated the adaption was when they got to the point where the ballerina woman attacked the village... and the animation was literally just a still frame over speed lines, with sound effects.

I'm happy how much people ended up loving Dr. Stone
Edit: wait what? I thought the anime was a huge success?
Loved the anime, but it wasn't much better than the manga. Demon Slayer's anime felt superior to the manga, Neverland's Anime was also excellent. Dr Stone's just didn't hinder the source material.
I guess most people don't like it because it doesn't have much action considering the shounen reader are mostly teenagers
i liked both anime and manga tbh, finished first season and went straight to the manga, same to demon slayer
Bro I’m just here waiting for another “the current state of Shonen Jump” video
