- As 1917 entered its final months, the once proud Russian nation was being torn apart from both the inside and the outside.
A series of dramatic social upheavals were shaking the political structure of the Russian Republic to its core, and they would soon reach their climax in the October revolution. Meanwhile, the war raged on, and Germany was not interested in showing leniency to Russia.
Soon, Germany decided to unleash its High Seas Fleet, a force that had been kept primarily dormant as it was considered inferior to the almighty Royal Navy but more than powerful enough to devastate the Russian fleets.
During Operation Albion, the High Seas Fleet moved to conquer the West Estonian Archipelago and trap as many enemy ships as possible within the confines of the Gulf of Riga.
The amphibious operation was a massive success, and most of the islands fell to the Germans. Amidst the chaos, a small group of Russian warships and three British submarines were now trapped, encircled by an overwhelmingly larger force.
With Petrograd about to witness the Socialist uprising and the fires of revolution burning inside the vowels of the trapped Russian warships, the crews sent a desperate radio communication and prepared to fight to the last man.
The Battle of Moon Sound was about to begin…

I still find it sad that the UK scrapped the Dreadnought. Would have been a beautiful museum ship.
So would have Warspite. The most decorated British ship of the 20th century and they let it be cut up for scrap.

@@johnholt890 Canada kept the Haida (Tribal class destroyer)and the Sackville (Flower class Corvette) from WW2. It was private groups that fought to keep them. Which ended up being a good thing. They are the only ships of their classes left on the planet.
We also have the Ojibwa (Oberon class submarine)
Other than that, almost all ships get sent to the scrap yard when retired.
@@johnholt890 The USA wasn't bombed until their cities were left in ruin.Wile the Americans slept safely in their homes protected buy their navy the British bore the brunt of the Nazi aggression on land, in the air and at sea.
Well at least the pre dreadnought the Mikasa is still around. Though its a Japanese ship it was built with by the British and I would argue is one of the best ships ever produced by the British.
This is perfect example of why you don't push people with nothing to lose into a corner.

I kinda disagree. Operation Albion was a german success as they achieved their main goals.
And despite their greater advantage they had to contend with coastal batteries and mine fields.
After Operation Albion, they had a better and safer control of the baltic sea.
(This does not take out the courage of russian sailors and were fighting uneven odds)
Proves that even the smallest prey is most deadly when backed into a corner.
This is why sun Tzu said never fight an enemy on death ground. And sometimes it makes sense to fight on death ground yourself, if heavily outnumbered.
It's also possibly why the Russians haven't completely encircled Bakhmut (or just incompetence or weakness lol, but it's a possibility)
@@Tom--Ace they aren't able to do it. the Ukrainians are making them fight for every building and street. But Russia no longer encircles cities completely because of what happened in mariupol.

We could say the same for Western countries. For French people too. Mass genocides in Africa, neocolonialism even today. French people don't have children while Muslims are constantly growing, Christianity is vanishing while mosques are full. Ex French colonies expel French military and Macron is ridiculed in from of the whole world while he tries to lecture African presidents. The documentation gives a completely wrong impression because the Germans did only use 2 (!) of 10 battle ships in real fight. Therefore the numerical superiority in real combat was not so big as claimed here in the intro. Furthermore, the victory was decisive for Germany because the Russians had only left the Northern Baltic Sea for operations now. This sea is frozen in winter and therefore the Russian fleet was completely out of business. As well the question arises why didn't the British Empire try to support the Russians with more than submarines? The German action was predictable - why no diversionary maneuvers in the North Sea? On this way the British fleet could force the Germans to move many battle ships and other ships to the Northern Sea and relieve the Russians.
You are absolutely right about the numerical ratio of the two parties in terms of the main battle ships . With regard to the smaller units, the Russians were in the majority, e.g. 21 destroyers against 16 German torpedo boats. The German minesweepers are not comparable to today's modern minesweepers, but were converted fishing boats in 1917/1918 that were insufficiently armed and were primarily only supposed to search for and remove mines.
Basically, however, the Russian side was not in a position to take advantage of the revulution and the resulting loss of naval officers and non-commissioned officers. The revolutionary soldiers' councils on the Russian ships had such a strong command that they could overrule the remaining naval officers in command of the ships in battle. The ship's crews thus lost a lot of discipline and efficiency. Thus, the strategic Russian objective - to hold the last remaining islands under Russian control - could not be achieved. Control of the Gulf of Riga was transferred to the Germans and Russian shipping had to be suspended, also because of the winter ice.

@CipiRipi00 Located on the seafloor of the Belt Sea is the Darss Sill (18m deep), which also determines the maximum draft of ships looking to sail on the Baltic Sea. In fact ships with 13-15 m depth can make it. Now, compare with the British vessel's. Don't tell me British battle ships with a deep draught of 10m couldn't sail to the Baltic Sea. The British Empire could easily force Denmark to allow such an operation.

Naval power is almost the most important tool for any major nation, and back then it was THEE only tool for a empire to stay in a power on the global stage….Russia never and has never recovered their once formidable navy…..now Russia just turns all of its ships into “submarines”…..AKA they sink to the ocean

Russia had no business fighting in WWI. The war against Germany, which was fighting Britain for control of most of the world, was a completely hopeless proposition for a government that was incapable of fighting Japan only 10 years earlier. Everyone knew this was a hopeless war, but no one was willing to take responsibility for a separate peace. Better to let a few more million peasants die than to admit to the opposition in the Duma that you weren‘t capable of contending for world domination.
The Provisional government that took power in March 1917 was even worse: their support was so paper-thin that their entire motivation for continuing to fight was restoring military discipline and restoring the (utterly spent) patriotism of the masses. A war no one wanted to fight continued to be fought in hopes that it would blinker the people fighting it into obedience (it did not).
While is it, that whenever in one of these videos there is talk about a "sunk battleship" (at 6:19 here), footage of the sinking of the SMS Szent István has to make do... - those poor souls, who can be seen crawling on the hull of the ship could not have imagined, how many times people (a century later) would witness their demise....
Call the Russians anything you want by reflecting in their shortcomings, but when the fight is on for good regardless of the odds they fight to the end. The Russian Navy never recovered from the Russo-Japanese War. The decay continued after WWI and beyond.

I am surprised the Uk main battle fleet did not turn up and attack the German fleet from behind. Our intelligence people did not miss much when the war was on,
We would have known about it in advance and since we wished to wipe out the German fleet it is odd we did not send the UK fleet there to attack the Germans?
The Royal Navy would have out gunned the German Fleet and we would have had them trapped in the area.
Shame as this would have ended the war at least at Sea. and saved the Russians from the uprisings and possibility stopped the take over by the Lenin lot.

You do realize that this is a skewed analysis right? In 1939 UK had the most powerful navy according to how navies fought back then. But in actuality Japan had the most powerful navy until the battle of midway. Aircraft carriers were greatly underestimated and battleships were overestimated. The UK lost over 4900 ships during the entire war. They didn’t retain their prewar number of ships until 1944. Not only that, but the Germans had superior technology and very intelligent tactics. At this point in the war the UK was no match for Germany. I mean they got pushed all the way back to their mainland and then suffered air raids for a long time. They were the most powerful in terms of sheer number of battleships and cruisers. But the Japanese were the most powerful because they had 10 carriers, plus battle ships, cruisers, and you know the ships navies usually have. After the battle of midway the USA quickly became the most powerful military in the world, building 20 Essex class carriers, amongst other battleships, cruisers, and fighter planes. Keep in mind the USA navy had no choice but to become the most powerful or get destroyed. They were fighting in the other side of the planet, fighting a 2 front war against 2 superior enemies AND go island hopping while doing so. So yes maybe more British ships could’ve helped, but they weren’t the most powerful by any means at that point. They were hurting and getting beat. Even with the US lend lease act. It took US troop intervention to really turn the tide. America was fighting like 6 different fronts. 2 in South Pacific, at least 2 in Europe for a while, and in Africa when we first joined the war. If you said “I am surprised the US main fleet didn’t come” I’d be like “yeah I get why they didn’t, but if they did, the Germans would be fucked
Like the Video said, the German's didn't utilize their Navy against the English because the English Navy was far superior. The Video stated they could go after and knockout the Russian Navy because they had the power to do that. Communications weren't all that great back in 1917, so it would be harder for English Warships to get word and make that journey to save the Russians. Furthermore, the English Navy would have been subjected to German shore defenses because they would have had to transit German Controlled Waters to do it. German Warships were stuck back in German Controlled Waters, German U-Boats were not and the English Ships were mostly tasked with escorting merchant ships that were bringing supplies from the US and other supporting countries.

@@jewwinfrey6460 not a bad summary. I agree that the Imperial Japanese Navy was the.preminant power at the time. FDR forced their hand cutting off oil and other resources. The USN caught some fortunate breaks initially, the rest followed with newer aircraft trained pilots and great code breaking. Not to mention that a battle damaged carrier got unbelievable repairs returning to Pearl from yard birds, the crew and was back in action within a couple of days.

cool story, too bad its told from the russian side and god knows they love to lie about everything. it'd be cool to hear both sides account because there is no way that an surrounded, trapped, outnumbered, and outgunned fleet just "snuck away" from a situation like that with only 3 ships lost.
It's pretty simple really. The Russians were routed and the Germans captured 20,000 soldiers for the loss of just 156 men. The German dreadnoughts were only lightly damaged and the ships they did lose were expendable by design.

Now I am convinced that you pick your video clips at random and rely on the sound of your voice to carry the day. There were German soldiers in a clip wearing WWII helmets as well as several clips of American ships that served during WWII and only WWII. When you are dealing with history and not fiction you need to adapt your video to history while refraining from portraying fictional accounts.

The Russian Navy needed a good Naval battle since getting their butts handed to them by the Japanese in 1905.
Well this one certainly wasn't it. The Germans handed them their butts all over again. This video does not portray the battle at all accurately - the Russians put up a fairly token resistance before being thoroughly defeated.
@@mattbowden4996 They put up a fierce fight. They were severely underpowered and undergunned and delt out a fierce blow with what they had available. They didn't bring that fight to the Germans, the Germans brought that to them as the only means to gain a naval victory because they knew the Russian Navy was an easy victory. The Germans were the bullies picking on the little guy because they knew they'd win. The Russians demonstrated the actual courage in that fight, they did not go quietly into the night. In 1905, the Russians were taking it to the Japanese and the Japanese handed the Russians' asses to them in a major Naval battle.
The old russian ships had one little advantage.Higher gun-elevation,so they could engage targets at much closer distances. The german dreadnoughts,designed for engagements at much bigger distances , had to increase the distance to the enemy to make proper use of their modern guns that lacked such a high elevation.The russian costal-batteries where equipped with the formidable russian 30,5cm(12inch) gun and the germans had to be aware of them.The russian navy fought with great but useless bravery,the russian land -forces where more infected by the revolution and lack of morale.After the german landings the russian garrison on moon-island collapsed quickly.

Why were there British subs with the Russians?
Well Russia and Britain were allies at the time and they could have been in the area for a number of reasons, to deliver supplies, messages, refuel/rearm, to help fend off German warships or simply because it was an area of heavy German navy presence and having a few Royal Navy subs stationed there was useful to the Allied war effort.

The word trapped was repeated so many times. In fact, every ship that participated in battle could escape to Kronstadt etc. British submarines trapped... This is so wrong narrative...

The wording and narrative makes this appear llike a propaganda movie and not serious history. Furter, it seems based almost exclusively on Russian sources. There are a number of good books that cover this operation from a more even handed perspective that apparently have not been used at all!

I disagree with RN ouclassing the HSF as it was proven then and again later on....in numbers it was surely much bigger but the way they fought with arrogance and disregarding the German Navy was disastrous but still they clinged on the idea carrying it stubbornly to WWII as well costing thousands of young british sailors their lifes
