Thank you for the kind words. Yes, I play acoustic piano. The Privia PX5s does have weighted action like a piano. Practice, no matter what you practice on, makes all the difference.
This is a fun video and very informative. In my opinion, this unit has the best piano sounds I have ever heard from an electronic keyboard. You can actually hear the string "snap" that you get with acoustic pianos. Thanks.
Love your playing on this Jim, the pianos sound real nice. Don't forget to let in on the follow up when you've got time. Its looking like one of these should be added to the collection.
Great playing! This thing has a ton of accompaniment features. You can trigger riffs which are midi phrases, and you c an odo all kinds of stuff with layering the six zones and using arpeggiators and the sequencer.
great video bought one yes for its price allot of power under the hood trying out their synths their amazing too casio was turn onto them by this video n joe sample playing this model at NAMM says allot.Hey I am not taking away from bigger pricey models like nord etc excellent but for its low price low weight full KB exceptional value
Nice love to hear some Rhodes sounds. The electric piano patch you played sounded like a Wurlitzer. Nice piano playing too. Never heard much piano from you. Nice
Just ordered will not be here for a few days... I met you at the Rhythm Room. LIke you I traded in my Privia 330... Amazing board for the price.. Also I am a funder for the root doctors... hope they make their goal.. thanks for the demo.
Nice!! I think I'll pick one up soon!! I always thought Casio to be a very cheap brand of boards but they really have stepped it up to live stage action without being embarrassed u know. Lol. Thanks Jim. Oh still looking forward to a demo of the new Hammond Leslie digital pedal
Jim, you play beautifully and make your new PX-5S really sing, 'scuse the pun! Also kudos to Queen Kittee for doing such a great job blessing your new dp with such great soundin' dynamics and tones! Keep 'em coming Jimbo. Would love to hear and see some of your tonal tweaking in action - tips and tricks? - and hear some of your personal faves. Overall a very lovely, informative and creatively entertaining video! Alan Wade
Matt, it sounds great. The PX5s includes a true mono acoustic piano sample, which I recommend using for mono gigs. I chose the PX5s simply because it's advanced synthesizer abilities allow me to sculpt the sound exactly how I want. It has replaced my Yamaha Motif ES rack as my main sound source for acoustic pianos, electric pianos, and all things non-Hammond organ.
Be interesting to know how the action feels compared to Rolands FP line or RD-800 as to the piano action and natural sound? Like all those overtones, the nuances like hammer sounds you hear in a real piano. I like Rolands V-Piano. They have their pianos down great. Just wondering how Casio compares to especially since it is a 1000 dollars cheaper.
If i want to get better pianos off a CD library like the 47GIG piano samples mentioned below, I would need a lap top or an IPAD and interface with it and just a regular nice action keyboard say like say that Casio to run the sound interface through from the lap top?
hey could you do me a huge favor? what was the run that you played at 4:42...i can't for the life of me figure out how runs work and i was wondering if there was a name for that..thanks!
An old message, but you should really just search youtube for "piano runs" "piano fills" or "how to play fast arpeggios" and similar guides for the generic ideas. Basically runs are different kind of chords played fast in arpeggio style up and down. Classical music uses more clean and basic chords usually, whereas jazz and blues uses scales and chords similar to the music/songs itself. The most basic runs are just 3 note chords played up and down the octaves, mostly they just need proper fingering and agility. Most runs are not technically very demanding otherwise really. There is also a term "shredding" which has come mostly from guitar music to pop piano music, so you can search with that term too.
Widiar thank you so much! yeah, well a lot of the tutorials are very basic and don't really capture what the professionals do..thanks for that! i really appreciate it.
Hi Jim. What are your impressions of this a few months on? Is it a keeper? What do you make of the piano sound.... I like the leccy pianos on this....that Wurli sounds great. Can't make my mind up about pianos......guess I need to play one ( which isn't always possible)
Hello, Jim. Thank you for demo. Nice playing, nice sound. I have one question. Can you please tell me, does the PX-5S's Grand Piano sound have a key-off sample?
Hi Jim- How does the PX-5 sound using just the mono output? What made you choose the PX-5 over the other current casios such as the PX-350 / 150 ? Thanks
I bought this board recently but I noticed that the keys are very bouncy and slow. Is that a normal behaviour ? Because I find it difficult to play thrills and (fast) classical pieces.
I ordered a PX-5s from Guitar Center, as they don't stock that unit in store. I just got it, and though I think it sounds great, I don't like the action. It is very bouncy. Just holding any key down, then releasing it, produces two complete bounces on the key return. The weight of the keys is ok, a little light actually, but the bounciness really makes it feel clumsy to me. I played a PX 150 and 350 in the store, and I liked both. I assumed that they would have the same action. But it seems not to be the case. All of the reviews that I have seen online praise the action of this KB. Is it possible that it could be my particular unit? Does this model have to "play-in" for a while? Anybody else have this experience? I may end up returning it.
Can i split the keyboard with only one button? I am wondering because i need to split and unsplit while playing a song. I need only piano in one part of the song, and then i need to turn on the bass for left hand when bass part comes.
Not really. For that functionality I would look at the Privia PX-560 which has a nice touchscreen with a dedicated SPLIT button. Very easy to do splits with that model.
How do the keys feel? I have a Roland RD700 and I really prefer the realistic piano key feel it has. Have you tried the Roland and if so, how does the PX5s compare?
Well, honestly I've never cared for the RD series from Roland. I always cringe when I get them as backline. For some reason they hurt my hands. I know many people that really like them and that's great but they are not for me. :) The PX5s doesn't hurt my hands. I love the action. But that's really a personal decision only you can make.
Hi Jim....Thanks for the quick review. This board sounds fantastic, that Piano patch is killer, and you have great chops. I know it's been some time since you did this review, but I have question about the Audio. Most keyboard reviews are done playing into a Computer. They all sound pretty good that way. I realize the 5S has no on board speakers. What kind of sound do you get from it through a PA or Amp? I have a Yamaha P80 (old Board), sounds great through headphones, plug it into a Amp or Monitors, it sounds like a tinny toy. I hate having having to use headphones all the time. Any recommendations?
+fcizin Thanks for watching and for the question. I think it really depends on the amplifier / speakers. A lot of so-called keyboard amps are not very good. I tend to prefer full-range PA speakers. Currently I'm using a pair of Yamaha DXR10 powered speakers when I use the PX5s live and they work great. Depending on the room, I sometimes need to roll the bass off a bit, but this is not hard due to the EQ switches on the back of the DXR10 speakers or the onboard EQ knobs on the PX5s. Long answer short: The PX5s translates great through speakers if the speakers themselves are high quality.
+Jim Alfredson Hi Jim....Thanks so much for the reply, and it certainly makes sense what you're saying. I'll certainly check out some high end speakers. Take Care...Frank
Jim Alfredson Thanks Jim. My current keyboard has some issues so I'll be getting either a Kawai MP6, Kawai MP7 or Casio PX5s. From what I've read the Kawai stage pianos have very good key action/feel. And my important feature is the acoustic piano sounds and all three sound excellent but I need more research. Great playing and thanks for taking the time to answer my question.
I love it. The acoustic pianos are fantastic, the new Wurli is great, the Rhodes is great, and the action is wonderful. And the synthesizer section is extremely powerful. Yes, I think it would be good for a church group.
***** Why would I compare the piano in a $1000 Privia to a specialty library that is $500 by itself and requires a $1000 computer and $100 audio interface to run? The piano sound in any of the current crop of hardware keyboards from Nord, Yamaha, Roland, or Korg would not compare to a 47GB piano sample library.
Thanks for the vid... If you didn't have one those little 'Keyboard Fairies' .... you'd be doing Coke using an ice cream scoop with Dave Matthews backstage on your world tour.... XD
I understand there are layering and easy res/filter controls, but how deep in the actual synth editing engine, or is there one? It's really hard to tell from all thse videos - can you craft your own synth sounds (from oscillators, filters, envelopes, etc) or do you just have the basic sounds with some basic front panel editing abilities?
The synth section is DEEP! You can create your own sounds from scratch using a wide variety of waveforms. The filters are fantastic as are the envelopes.
thanks for letting me know! I'm coming from the Kurzweil pc3le6, which is just a bit above the privia price range (yet only 61 semi0-weighted keys..) and that had full access to the VAST synth engine, which is very deep. I have to get rid of it b/c the le61 series is messed up - seemingly every unit is faulty. Mines gone into the shop 3 times in under a year for the same problem and others online have been saying they experienced the same problem. Oh well,I might have a privia 5s in my future!
ProfQ, did you ever get the Casio PX5s? I have a PC3LE7 that was in the shop 3 times too with the flashing LED thing and crashing during boot up. Mine is fixed for good now but I am not really satisfied with the pianos and weight and have been thinking of the PX5. Don't need the extra synth stuff now that I am out of the 80's cover band scene. What are your thoughts on the Casio?
Nice video Jim. I hope you'll answer my question. Can I use this Privia to record on my computer. I mean, can I use this keyboard like a workstation? Can I use it like a Midi? And how it would sound. Thanks for answer me. :) Really nice video.
+rtrortgortz94 Thanks for the kind words. I'm not totally sure what you mean by "record on my computer". The PX5s is not an audio interface. So in order to record it's sounds to the computer, you'd need a way to get external sound into your computer, which is usually accomplished with an audio interface, such as the Steinberg UR22 or similar. In regards to MIDI, the PX5s is a great MIDI controller. But MIDI itself has no sound. MIDI is simply a method of controlling notes and other parameters. The nice thing about the PX5s is that you can use it's MIDI capabilities through USB or standard MIDI connectors, meaning your computer doesn't need a MIDI input. Some audio interfaces have them, some do not.
+Jim Alfredson Yeah, about "recording on my computer" I'm looking for a good midi/workstation/keyboard to aloud me to play it and record it in my computer while I'm using an interface. But I was reading the details of this keyboard and it doesn't have midi option. So now I'm a little consfuded. What do you think about Korg Kronos, Nord stage 2 and Korg SP-170S do you think it those keyboards would help me? I'm also studying piano I'm not a "computer musician". Thanks for your attention, I really hope you answer me again. :)
Buy a new keyboard may I suggest the roland juno ds 88 or ds 61 very great keyboard sounds good with amp or headphones. Oh and also the qaulity of the sound depands on the type of amp you have and if you are still not satisfied you can get more in depth in your keyboard and literally change the sounds you have and save them.
Piano samples are personal based in my opinion, but I just switch from galaxy vintage D, to the fairly new grandeur, also from galaxy, and sometime evolution Rosewood grand. There are so many piano samples, so try out the ones you can and see which samples sound good to you.
Dang.....what a production!!! flower fairy ( 2 cute) angelic light coming out of box ( didn't get that with my korg...but very cool. Had to laugh,,, and a good tech video to boot.
You are an excellent player!!!! Kind of makes me want to just stick with guitar since it will take forever to be decent at keys or synth for that matter!!!
he likes it when manufacturers take a chance. Ha! It's called anarchy of production. They define our "needs". Most of us are trying to stay off the street
Really enjoyed your playing! Bought one of these this week... waiting for it to arrive. Your video helps me feel I made the right choice!!!
Great demo. Enjoyed the jam, Jim. Keyboard fairy was awesome too. It's 2024 and I just bought one.
I started watching for the review. I stuck around because of your playing. Fantastic.
Thank you for the kind words. Yes, I play acoustic piano. The Privia PX5s does have weighted action like a piano.
Practice, no matter what you practice on, makes all the difference.
AWESOME playing. I love the piano sound on this thing. Thanks for sharing with us.
Great minds think alike...have been scrutinizing the PX5...great playing Jim!
I want a PX 5s!!! I have the Px-3. You are a great player Jim Alfredson!! Enjoyed it...thank you.
Awesome demo! Love the antics at the beginning. LOL. I foresee a Privia PX-5S in my future.
This is a fun video and very informative. In my opinion, this unit has the best piano sounds I have ever heard from an electronic keyboard. You can actually hear the string "snap" that you get with acoustic pianos. Thanks.

Thank you for the review. Great playing! I think I've found my new keyboard.
I loved the Bright light shining from the box. Casio would love that! Geez you are looking like Ben Folds a bit. Great keys and great playing.
A small Casio synth was my introduction to MIDI and computers back in the eighties. I'm going to have to check out the Privia PX5s for sure.
Great playing! This thing has a ton of accompaniment features. You can trigger riffs which are midi phrases, and you c an odo all kinds of stuff with layering the six zones and using arpeggiators and the sequencer.
Never learned blues-scales. I think I should do so in the future. Thank´s for posting and congratulation to your skills!
So how is your future today.
Beautiful Board....I got one a few days ago.... I'm liking it so far... NICE

Oh my! So gotta get this board! Thanks for this awesome vid! You rock!
Thanks for the E-Smile Jim! Awesome always!
Nice love to hear some Rhodes sounds. The electric piano patch you played sounded like a Wurlitzer. Nice piano playing too. Never heard much piano from you. Nice
Even though I have a PC3 I am still looking at the PX5s because of portability....Thx for the vid and great playing.
Thanks, Tom! Enjoy the PX5s!
Just ordered will not be here for a few days... I met you at the Rhythm Room. LIke you I traded in my Privia 330... Amazing board for the price.. Also I am a funder for the root doctors... hope they make their goal.. thanks for the demo.
how are the other acoustic sounds which I would need,,, horns, strings, sax, voices? need some of these for rock band..thanks. piano sounds great
Amazing piano sound :
really interesting!
the initial ceremony worth the entire video!!!!
:-)
Nice!! I think I'll pick one up soon!! I always thought Casio to be a very cheap brand of boards but they really have stepped it up to live stage action without being embarrassed u know. Lol. Thanks Jim. Oh still looking forward to a demo of the new Hammond Leslie digital pedal
Great chops!
Thanks for making me privy to the Privia. ;) Cool video, man!
Love it! You are always so serious on stage, nice to see your humorous side. When you coming back to Omaha?

Yes, if you are playing primarily piano, then a weighted action keyboard is required to build strength and endurance.
Hi there, great demo! How are the organ sounds on this keyboard?
I can tell you from my experience with mine, there are a lot of AMAZING organ sounds and they're all VERY customizable.
Matt, it sounds great. The PX5s includes a true mono acoustic piano sample, which I recommend using for mono gigs.
I chose the PX5s simply because it's advanced synthesizer abilities allow me to sculpt the sound exactly how I want. It has replaced my Yamaha Motif ES rack as my main sound source for acoustic pianos, electric pianos, and all things non-Hammond organ.

also the electric pianos like Yamahas and Roland with its phaser Tine electric pianos.
Great job bro respect :D
Did you do the benediction ceremony with the New Keyboard Fairy?
Hi Jim. What are your impressions of this a few months on? Is it a keeper? What do you make of the piano sound....
I like the leccy pianos on this....that Wurli sounds great. Can't make my mind up about pianos......guess I need to play one ( which isn't always possible)
Hey Jim,I've got a question: did You make the demo video for the Yamaha v 50?
Nice demo! I envy your playing skills ... :-D
Hello, Jim. Thank you for demo. Nice playing, nice sound. I have one question.
Can you please tell me, does the PX-5S's Grand Piano sound have a key-off sample?
Yes it does!
Thank you very much. So, the only issue that it doesn't have half pedal function. The rest is OK.
how does it sound over the Roland FP-80? The roland pianos or yamahas?
Hi Jim. You are really, really good. How long have you been playing?
wish i could play like this guy
10:06 ---Love the Spielbergien "Lost Ark" moment. hahaha
Hi Jim- How does the PX-5 sound using just the mono output? What made you choose the PX-5 over the other current casios such as the PX-350 / 150 ? Thanks
Oops--My mistake. Spielberg "Ark" moment is around 01:11.
did you intentionally or accidentally quote "Memories of Green" at 4.20?
I bought this board recently but I noticed that the keys are very bouncy and slow. Is that a normal behaviour ? Because I find it difficult to play thrills and (fast) classical pieces.

your dislike of it is actually the reason i want it. i dont like the stiffness of the Roland FaA08. i think i would prefer bouncy lol
Ta hell with the keyboard - any tips on becoming an awesome player like you? LOL Good stuff.
Can i split the keyboard with only one button? I am wondering because i need to split and unsplit while playing a song. I need only piano in one part of the song, and then i need to turn on the bass for left hand when bass part comes.

Question: are the keys noisy like some other low to mid range 88 key hammer acton keyboards?
Thanks for the demo.
No, I wouldn't say they are noisy. No more so than a real piano.
Jim Alfredson Thanks Jim. My current keyboard has some issues so I'll be getting either a Kawai MP6, Kawai MP7 or Casio PX5s. Hey Jim how do you like the board now? After you've had it awhile. And do you think it would be good for church worship?

+rtrortgortz94 It has MIDI as I said above. Either standard MIDI connections that have been in use since the 80s or MIDI over USB.
+Jim Alfredson thank you very much, really. I was confusing the midi with a workstation, jajaja. I hope you'll do more videos.
Can you get great rhodes sounds out of this keyboard?
and
do you prefer it to the new px 560 that recently came out?
+klkdc Yes. There are free Rhodes patches on the Casio Music Gear forum that sound fantastic. I have not played the new PX560 so I cannot compare.
+Jim Alfredson Here are some samples. soundcloud.com/b3groover/sets/privia-px5s
Hey Jim, I'm just thinking about to buy a PX5s (I have a PX-300 already). After 3 years, what is your opinion about this instrument?
I still love it and use it all the time. It's a great board.
Keyboard fairy...I almost fell outta my chair! LOLOLOL....but fun demo and superb playing. That concert grand patch sounds sublime...
what piano samples are the best to buy off CD like the 47 gig pianos out there?
Piano samples are personal based in my opinion, but I just switch from galaxy vintage D, to the fairly new grandeur, also from galaxy, and sometime evolution Rosewood grand. There are so many piano samples, so try out the ones you can and see which samples sound good to you.
how does that work with a controller then? How do i get the real high quality 47 gig quality pianos sounds into a controller?
Nice playing
Upvote for the Keyboard Fairy
Dang.....what a production!!! flower fairy ( 2 cute) angelic light coming out of box ( didn't get that with my korg...but very cool. Had to laugh,,, and a good tech video to boot.
How do you record the audio and the video?
Video was done on an iPhone and edited with Sony Vegas. The speech was captured on the iPhone. Music was captured in Cubase.
If anyone was going to catch that, I knew it would be you. :)
You really enjoy your life
I didn't see any angelic light when I opened my PX-5s Box. :/
You are an excellent player!!!! Kind of makes me want to just stick with guitar since it will take forever to be decent at keys or synth for that matter!!!
I'll second that!
Great video, thanks. Nice playing. Very impressed with this keyboard but not feeling the look
Hahaha 😂
I dug this video
Sensacional..
Not a bad sounding keyboard, but to be honest, I more impressed with what your playing, than with the actual keyboard.
I want 1!!
bien joué !
Ahh... The benediction.... Doh!
he likes it when manufacturers take a chance. Ha! It's called anarchy of production. They define our "needs". Most of us are trying to stay off the street
never so something like that
haha
,,,you're funny Sir
i can't believe i just heard about this board today :( not on the ball.....
Zorra the keyboard fairy!.......... hahahahaha
kinda looks like r2d2s keyboard
Funny lol
Wow the girl is so sweet.
LOL
