No need to preheat few times glow plugs.Thats the issue why glow plugs always fails. There is preheating system that u dont need to do it few times. After engine starts it glows some time to make easyer to keep engine run.
for all of you who have faulty glow plugs or glow plug regulator; I advise you to do that; if you have electricity and a hair dryer in the cushion, then direct it into the suction channel of the air filter, add warm air and your vehicle will start immediately even with faulty glow plugs.
i saw a video where some guy had a problem with starting, he changed glow plugs but the car coludn't start so he had to change even the glow plug relay, maybe that can help you. :)
How did you fix it? Mine is doing exactly the same when temperature goes below -5ºC. I've replaced the 4 glow plugs, so I suppose it is either the glow plug relay or the fuse that is at fault.

Luckily in the UK it is very rare for -14c in most of the country, coldest ever in Manchester is -15c, coldest ever London -16c, coldest ever Glasgow -17c, Coldest ever in England -26.1 Newport, Shropshire, coldest ever in Scotland Braemar -27.2C. But for most of UK -10 rarely happens and my two E90/E91 320d M47 2006 with broken glow plugs or broken relays both start first time in cold weather, but take a little longer to crank and they run lumpy for a few seconds and a puff of smoke when they start. But not a big problem.
@[AG] Technology i have the exact same problem but i can get my e46 start at first time, i just floor gas pedal and it somehow starts with difficulities, otherwise i cant start the car. the winter is coming and getting colder. what will happen if i keep starting car like this? is it doing any harm? i should fix this but i cant do it right now.

In this car was dead glow plugs and controller. After glow plugs replacement and cintroller replacement all works great!
-20 here, glow plugs new, needs about 15trys to start, whats wrong with my 320d?

also you need to check glow plug controler, it often fails with glow plugs 👍🏻

Yes, the problem was fixed - by replacing the glow plugs - look for the next video in the list (my channel). the car was got easy after replacement

my 320d is starting after 7 secs in -13 has no problems ..

You risk damaging the starter and ruining the battery.

The start engine it's not good
Glow plugs failure. Nothing to do with the starter engine. Above -5ºC the car start perfectly in 1 second.
