I appreciate your honest reaction, which I interpreted as "It's well done, it's just not my taste." Not everyone has to feel the same way about every piece of music. However, this is one of my favorites.
Enjoyed your honest reaction. I often find that sad songs can be very powerful emotionally, which I enjoy alot. This song is one of my top 5 Nightwish songs. It is one of the more personal songs for Tuomas and the fans. An old song written by Tuomas when he was young. Inspired by the question what would you say if you knew you were going to die tomorrow. Tuomas has said this song was a way of thanking all those who deserve his thanks and a piss off to all those who deserve it as well. Tuomas often uses the dead boy as a symbol of the loss of childhood innocence and imagination that we experience as we grow into adulthood. When you hear dead boy or poet in his lyrics he is usually referring to himself. He also has a strong connection to the ocean and sees it as a place of peace and tranquility. A refugee from the modern world. IMO, in this song Tuomas is saying that he no longer lives for himself or his friends but only for the music. He puts all his feelings into the music and his music is what gives his life meaning. He tries to make his life better but can never get back to the innocence of his youth. He wants to be loved but can't connect with people. He asks that they remember his music, not him, after he is gone. Thus a lonely soul, an ocean soul. Note that on the video wall behind the band the boy is holding up his arms to several swans. In Finnish mythology swans are the creatures that guide your soul to the afterlife.
I once heard Tuomas say, this is one of my best written songs ever!! however Nightwish released 2 other album since he said this, 3 with upcoming album, but its a song close to Tuomas still..
"Dead Boy" (along with a few other names like "Ocean Born") are names that Tuomas (the keyboard player and main songwriter) calls himself. He is a dead boy as the child within him grew up when he became an adult.
This song is one of early classics from Nightwish from 90's. Originally sung by the first singer Tarja Turunen. The boy in the lyrics is Tuomas himself. Thank you for your honest opinion. Great reaction.
Top 4 for me This is the best performance. Tuomas' most personal sing until The Poet and the Pendulum. The only song I know in which Emppu doesn't smile Tuomas: "Dead Boy's Poem' featured a child's voice. "I had an idea of a song with a young boy boy reciting reciting a poem", Tuomas says. "The trouble was that no Finnish so I had to find a 12-year-old could pronounce English so that it sounded right, so I had to find a native speaker to do it. My mother's Sister, actress Miitta Sorvali, knew [the English-Finnish director and writer] Neil Hardwick well, and my mum remembered that Neil had a son called Sam. I called him and asked him to do the poem, and Sam agreed right away. It was just funny that when I talked to this 15-year-old boy he seemed like such a citizen of the worldand was actually familiar with our band too. Sam said he'd be free to record the poem anytime; I'd just have to give him a call. He even knew where Finnvox was and promised to meet us there. The professionalism of young Sam Hardwick made a deep impression on Tuomas. "When he arrived at the studio, had to ask him to wait for ten minutes or so and he just pulled a book from his pocket and sat down to read". Tuomas says, " I gave him the poem, and he read it through a few times. We did some editing and Sam just sat down on the studio floor and read his book, after which I asked him to read the poem a couple of more times."
Dead Boy's Poem is one my favs. Every time Marko brought the beautiful double neck guitar out I almost drool. That is one of the most beautiful and sweet sounding guitars I've heard, man that thing is gorgeous. Every once in a while Tuomas shows us his dark side. The Poet and the Pendulum for example. If you don't know the back story to The Poet and the Pendulum it's worthy looking into. It's about the fire storm and aftermath of Nightwish firing Tarja from the band. There is plenty on line to read. Gabriel may have some specific links that might help explain. Dead Boy's Poem gives us another glimpse into Tuomas. If I could pause a bit and ask you if you have seen the new Nightwish video release - Perfume Of The Timeless - it's been all over the net the last 2 days and the reactions are stunning. This could possibly be Tuoma's best work ever. It is simply unbelievable. We'll all look forward to your reaction to it.
Great reaction. I wonder if "Last Ride of the Day" might be more to your liking. Very upbeat and positive. My favorite version is the live at the 2015 Masters of Rock.
Hi Zoey. You're not going to like every song but you should understand that Nightwish is not about the fame or popularity of the band, but a long journey into one man's mind. The bass player, Marko hepled to write a few songs, but now the keyboard player, Tuomas writes all the songs as well as the lyrics. He is more interested that you enjoy the songs because they bring a message to everyone listening. A lot of the songs have to do with his personal pain, happy moments, sad moments, and even a time he fell in such a deep depression, that he was forced to kill himself in song in order to put the pain behind him and continue what he started. So now that you know where these lyrics come from, it will be easier for you to understand if the song is about him or not. This way, if you like it, good. If not, then you know what it was about in the history of Nightwish and you can continue your journey. Great reaction and don't feel down if you hear a song you don't like because there aren't many of those. I love almost every Nightwish song. So see? Even I have my limits. 😂 Thank you for the video, reaction and comments. Stay safe and stay blessed. 😊❤️🤘🤘
Zoey you might like "Shudder Before the Beautiful". The live version from from Wembley arena. Show opener and pretty much the kind of song you just requested :) Apart from Nightwish, you might enjoy something bit more dance friendly metal, like Babymetal. They just released Ratatata which is collab with Electric callboy. Absolute banger and the video is gr8. Might end up having more issues with copyright with them tho. Anyways loved your reaction. Dead boys poem is indeed one of the less uplifting songs, but beautiful one still. Like you said - good for certain moods. Also happy to see you seem more relaxed being in youtube already. Looking forward to check your next clip. Have fun doing it :)
Hello there Zoey, nice reactions you make, honest and open. I enjoy to watch your reactions I would like you to react to "The Poet and The Pendulum" A musical master piece. As most of all Nightwish songs, it's written by Tuomas Holopainen and is about when the first singer, Tarja Turunen, left the band back in October 2005 and his frustration over this. Google the story before reaching! And react to this version th-cam.com/video/N4Vfy5yCy-c/w-d-xo.html

I did not care for this song at first either, it has grown to be one of my favorites. Empuu's guitar solo is one of his best, IMHO.
I'm glad that you do tell your truth, this song is one that grows on you as you hear it more. Good honest reaction🇬🇧

As good as this version is, it's really better with Tarja (just check it at From Wishes To Eternity)
