The iPhone XR was the first 'budget' iPhone with the all screen design, releasing in 2018. And so, despite it being quite solid almost 5 years later, how good of a bargain is it on the used market? Let's find out!

I was given a XR because the battery was 77% capacity. Swapped the battery with the iFixit kit (took about 5 hours). After using as a main phone coming from a 13 pro, it’s not bad. A little slow when using light room but overall solid. I also bought the apple battery case and the phone will last for 48 hours. I stopped using it at this point but it’s a really dope phone.

I'm downgrading back to the XR rather than my current iPhone 13. The feel of the XR is just so nice, the size is great and it's so lovely and curved. I just feel like it's one of the best that's come out in ages and the colours are such a great change fromthe standard bland, muted colours/

Couldn't have said it better myself. I had a XR and went to a 13 and found they aren't that much different and I didn't mind downgrading to the XR. Yeah you'll get more support with the 13 but otherwise you aren't missing out on much.

Honestly, when you consider the price, this is a great budget iPhone even in early 2024. Yeah you aren't getting the latest and greatest, but the XR is one of my favorite iPhones ever. I had a XR and a 13 both in white and truth be told, i regretted spending so much on a 13 when i had a like new XR. It does 90 percent of what newer iPhones can do and it still works very well for an over 5 year old phone. I do think this is where iPhones hold their value. Because 5 years later you could buy one now and still have a good phone for a few more years with a new battery. And it still will outperform most budget and mid range androids. Hopefully the XR will get iOS 18 and 19 so it will get 7 years of support. I think it's very capable of it since the performance is still smooth.

it's still a perfectly fine phone. Looks good, works great. The only thing why I'm considering upgrading is it's only 64gb, just not enough anymore. For how long it's gonna be receiving updates, is just up to Apple, when it decides to kill it. Considering Apple was still selling it new in 2021, I'd hope for at least 2025, but who knows.
    btw:
for me this was the first phone with faceID and I must say it works fantastic, I don't miss touchID one bit. Yes, there are situation when touchID would work better, but for me personally, I had much more problems with touchID

I wouldn’t get this phone in 2023, mainly because it’s going to be 5 years old once October comes. If you’re on a budget and are in need of a new phone, go for the 12 or 13 mini, as both are $600 (here in the US at least). It may not be the cheapest option, but you’ll be guaranteed a decent amount of time with the phone in terms of updates

I bought an Xr last year and bought an Xs last week because I needed the better quality camera for work. The battery on the Xs (even at 96% life) is so horrible, I switched back to the Xr. Once I sell this Xs, is it worth it to get the 11 or should I go newer?

So let me get this straight. You bought an old phone, then you bought another old phone less than a year later, and now you’re planning on buying a third old phone in the span of a year
Even if you recoup most of the cost of the XS, how exactly is that any cheaper than just buying a flagship every 5-6 years?
If you’re looking to be frugal, just buy a flagship from a year or two ago. Save a few hundred bucks but still have more than 1-2 years of usage left in the phone.

If you’re gonna upgrade your phone, UPGRADE your phone. Don’t sidegrade. You can get a refurbished iPhone 13 Pro Max for $700 if you shop around, use it for 5 years easily before it’s too old (or even longer if you don’t do anything too intensive on a day to day basis), and it comes out to a little over $100 a year. Why pay $200 to get a phone that’ll be obsolete in a year or two max, and in the meantime is just good enough

Okay hold on, “power hungry games” are “not a problem”? I guess Minecraft must be the hardest game ever to run if I need to play it on low settings to get good performance, and so is the Cut the Rope reboot on Apple Arcade
I like my XR well enough, for the fact that it’s 4.5 years old, but it does NOT handle intensive gaming well. It handles games from 2018 and before pretty well and not much else.

I’ve got an XR, had it since it came out. It’s still holding up and getting the job done in 2023, no repairs or battery replacements ever needed. It’ll tide me over until the iPhone 15 releases with a USB C port, I’m not itching for a new phone or anything.
But would I recommend someone *buy* it in 2023? Absolutely not. If you *buy* it in 2023, you’re not planning on using it for 5 months and then upgrade to something better. 3GB of RAM and an A12 chip are *not* going to be adequately functional a few years from now, to say nothing of the fact that if you’re buying a 4.5-year-old phone online you’re rolling the dice on its condition, even from a refurbished seller.
I think the sweetspot for a budget-conscious person is to buy an iPhone from 1-2 generations back. Old enough to depreciate in value a fair bit, but still new enough to be totally usable for 5+ years. If not for the 15 supposedly having a USB C port, I’d probably go for a 12 Pro Max as it likely has 4 years of software support ahead of it, and I think 6GB of RAM would be plenty to hold me over until the security updates ended a couple years after that.
