I used to love the 12 speed Eaton twin splitter in the ERF's Becky, I have a classic Seddon Atkinson tractor unit 401 with a 9 speed Eaton box fitted & a 290 Rolls Royce Eagle diesel engine ( screaming Eagle ), love manuals, my DAF is automatic at work bloody crap gearbox.
The difference of-course being that this ZF gearbox is fully synchronised, and it has "servoshift" meaning the shift action is supported by air making the sift action a lot lighter.
Thanks for the info about the gear changing. I understand completely. The one aspect that surprised me was that the half gears work in the low range. About 30 years ago I spent the day as a passenger in my friend's MAN truck. I actually got to drive it briefly on a disused airfield he was delivering to. I got up to 5th gear briefly, (i.e. I got into high range). He never used the splitter on low range, so I don't know if it was actually an option or not.
Very informative, the reality is that a lot of combinations are not used. One thing I never understood, although I am goings back 30 years, is how the splitter, when used, registers the change on a paper tachograph.
Cracking video Becky, same box 4 over 4 with a splitter as I had on my Class 1 practical test, many many moons ago! Still would like a manual to drive, but my knees would probably disagree! 😂
Hallo Becky, the gear chainging video was interesting, that what you call 1 and half and so on,we here know it as split gear and some lorry's the driver use clutch only in 1st gear,if i may ask what size engine does your lorry have,is it a 6 or 8 cyllinder engine and is your max speed that you'r alowed to drive the, also what code is it on your licence ?,i like your video's,drive safe please, from South Africa
As always becks very interesting on how to operate split boxes n informative unlike others 👍👍 Video that would be good n interesting for those taking test is the couple n un coupling of the trailers, and what the term B L A C K refers to when comes to trailers.
Hi Becky, yes it was interesting on the gears. But why have 1st and 2nd if they aren't used that much. Although I'm 70 soon would love to have go in on.
Great video Becky I learnt to drive in a 6 speed box and wish they had a bigger gearbox so I could have learned how to use a splitter. Did try and drive a dustcart with a splitter only lasted one hour 🤣 didn’t want to wreck the gearbox. Can you float gears in your truck ? Keep up the great work
Good video and very well explained too. Driven may manual units over the years myself. I'm one of the few no though I think that now prefers an auto box as like your dad my knees have seen better days. The one complaint I have is I see with new drivers driving automatics is that they don't appreciate going down the box to help you slow down. Its foot down and slam on the brake last minute. We have quite a few shot loads that way.
I got a 12 speed XF and it drives lovely, their a completely different animal to an auto, I hate autos with a passion, changed jobs last year and nearly fell over when they said it’s a manual. Literally jumped for joy
Hu Becky, great video, out 9f curiosity you said you passed your test in an auto, did you then have to re test in a manual or is it different to a car licence, thank you 😊
That's interesting it's a ZF gearbox, that's the company that makes the gearbox in my Deutz tractor, I'm sure ZF make for lots of applications and my tractor's front axle also. I've got 4 power shift gears in 6 ranges plus another lower range called "Creeper box"
Hello. My last 16 speed gear box was on my Left hand drive . Going from 5 up unloaded can you change without the using the clutch, if you get the revs right going up & down the box you will find it’s as smooth as an auto box. 😊😊
Brilliant Becky. If I remember correctly. When I took my truck and bus test,a long time ago,if you passed on an automatic, you had to take another test on a manual. Thanks Becky take care. ♥️♥️♥️🐄👍
If its like a scania 3 pedal opticruise (automatic) but with a clutch pedal that you only use when coning to a stop or pulling away will class as a manual.
I think they have changed the rules and if you already have a manual car license and take your test in an auto truck or coach you can now drive a manual! Doesn’t seem right but there you have it! All that effort I made with the gear changing exercise! 😂
It was very educational how you use all the gears in a lorry that's why I like automatic vehicles my brain won't let me do two things at once so I wouldn't be able to drive your lorry ❤❤
It can be done in any vehicle, you just got to know how high to have the revs when changing without the clutch, if you wanting a smoother change over with clutch
Never driven a 16 speeder. Had a 15 plate cf75 with a 12 speeded and an mx brake on it....lovely piece of kit fully loaded you could go down bird lip and the only time you touched the brakes was just as you came to the roundabout to go left on to the lower part of the hill. The sign of a proper trucker using a manual box.
The words you were looking for is unconcious competence. Four stages of learning, unconcious incompetance (you are crap and dont know yet), concious incompetance ( still crap but at least you know it now), conscious competance (getting there but still having to think about it), unconscious competance (Becky changing through the box or not having to think about it at all). Great vid.
Hi Becky, great video of how to change the gear on your trucks. I didn't know there was a high and low box and half gears as well. Do all your trucks have Air horns? Keep up the great work.
Becky is great but another good female truck driver I follow is Jemma Warren, she does bulker work, grain and aggregate. All these drivers give good tips for the new driver I think 👍 Good luck 👍
I drove a 13 speed Road Ranger in Canada and learned to shift with out the clutch. the clutch was for first and reverse. sound of engine was all you needed.
@@DannyDan2k13 you wont be able to float gears very well on a synchro box i tried it and it tries to shift but wont and grinds. they not really saving the clutch by not using it. lazy mans way is floating gears.
@@Land_Rover_Tony Indeed. I'm not sure it's so much about laziness for American truckers, but more so about shifting quickly as to not lose momentum like on a hill rather than double clutching which would be the alternative for a non-synchro gearbox
Another great video Becky but to be honest there’s no gearbox to match the GRS900 that Scania used. Even if your clutch went you still were able to get her to your destination and back
you have probably shown the pedals before, but I missed it. I'm in USA Texas. gas is right foot and clutch is left foot. Are the pedals the same there in truck and regular vehicle?
I started on a ERF ec11 with a Eaton twin split ,but if a dog to start with but once you got the hang of it ,it was a great gear box and only needs the clutch for setting off and stopping
Not being a driver my only problem with changing gears was when I got home after being on my road bike for 60some miles then changing footwear to ride my (so-called) mtb to get t'shop, suddenly having to remember which bike I was on and where the levers were...oh, and occasionally thinking after a long day at werk on a forklift truck, that I should be wearing a seatbelt! 🤣
Very good and informative, I can imagine as you said it is quite confusing at first but after a while it becomes second nature 😀, I drive an automatic class 2 but I'd love to have a go in a manual

I remember back in the 80s delivering new Mercedes tractor units. They had 4 speed knock over boxes giving 8 gears plus a splitter giving a total of 16 gears. When delivering the new units we usually started them in 13th and only used the top 4 gears. We then moved onto the pre select EPS gearbox, but thats a different story. Love your videos
you wanna try and see if you can get to drive a truck with a crash box Eaton Fuller, thats a double clutch job or you can float the gears with no clutch at all only when taking off and coming to a stop.
Hi Becky, nice video, but one thing i dont get is why so many trucks in the UK only have an Engine Breake and not a Retarder? Is there a Reason for that? Here in Germany its very rare to see just an Engine Brake alone. Greetins from Germany
I never got to arctic work. Buses and semi automatic was horrible. Coach was manual up to 6 speed box. Do you have to drop gears in half’s also? I did double clutch in training in an old Bedford coach. Del Boy day out job.

The gears come in useful 11:29 when the truck is loaded to 44 tons and you are glad of half gears. Keep up the good work.
Much like the 18 speed Eaton trans. that is prevalent in the US. Good job to you and your Dad for staying with the manuals! Todd the retired trucker.

Loved this! More on howbthings work and why please 😊😊

Hej becky iså you in asmr video vill you drive to norrköping o test my 4 raincots her o take home to you if you vill have raincots
What if you are in 13th gear and you have to stop really fast so you don't crash ? just wondering .
Great Video Becky, I would like to know about the gears when you going down narrow lanes/steep hills/mountains and what gears you would use?
I got a 12 speed XF and it drives lovely, their a completely different animal to an auto, I hate autos with a passion, changed jobs last year and nearly fell over when they said it’s a manual. Literally jumped for joy
Far to easy, no double de clutching.
Try a eaton twin splitter, great 'box once you master it

Great video becky. Any reason for not getting an automatic daf?
It's a 16 speed syndromes Stevie Wonder could drive that have a try at 13 speed road ranger now that was a gear box
Good video Becky 👍👍👍👍👏👏👏👏

In Australia when driving Kenworths with 18 speed boxes many drivers do not use the clutch when shifting between gears. Can this be done in a DAF?
It can be done in any vehicle, you just got to know how high to have the revs when changing without the clutch, if you wanting a smoother change over with clutch
VERY INFORMATIVE THANK YOU VERY MUCH
Eaton twin splitter for me, great gearbox. Great video Becky ❤️
Thing of the past now why do people think they are gods gift if they drive them

No not all have airhorns
Hi becky any tips on reversing
Hi Becky great video I didn't know your truck was a 16 speed gearbox. I thought it was a 10 or 12 speed. I've yet to start truck driving. I do want to
Becky is great but another good female truck driver I follow is Jemma Warren, she does bulker work, grain and aggregate.

I think I'd forget what gear I was in.
Great driver know how.x

Euro trucks all have synchros so no need to float the gears like in NA

Funny they have fully synchronized boxes in Europe. Too easy!

Hi becky with time it get easier but I would think it must be hard changeing gears
Great video
Love the video and the explanation on there gearbox

I LIKE USEING YOUR CB RADIO
Love video
16 forward gears Yr not a bit slow Maam
It boggles me you can learn to drive in an automatic truck and allowed to drive a manual after passing your test but not for a car??
Just buy an auto
Excellent video Becky, would you buy an automatic if you were buying a new truck 🚚
I thought manual gearboxes were a thing of the past? Never driven a manual for years.Auto everytime.
