Recently, there has been no update on Gentaro's independence. It may not be announced until the last minute, but it is worrisome that not a single gorilla transfer has been announced from overseas. There are plans to expand the gorilla house, though. Gentaro will be 13 years old this December. I received an opinion on the reason for this from a gorilla fan who knows a lot about gorillas in Japan.

We should remember that gorilla behavior is complex.
It is shaped by instincts and their environment of captivity.

(History of Momotaro Family)
sites.google.c...
Kyoto City Zoo / Western Lowland Gorilla
MOMOTARO & GENKI Family ( Momotaro Fam)
Father MOMOTARO ♂(2000/7/3)
He is hesitant in new situations and is a loner.
His father died before he was born, and he had never spent time with a silverback.
He had already turned into a silverback by the time he was 10 years old.
He is struggling with unfamiliar child-rearing.
MOMOTARO's father is BIJU.
MOMOTARO's mother is MOMOKO
Mother GENKI ♀ (1986/6/24)
She is 14 years older than Momotaro and has a role to support the whole family mentally.
She has had a tumultuous and eventful life.
She has returned to her birthplace, Kyoto City Zoo.
She had never been blessed with a baby but after meeting Momotaro,
she had two sons.
She is a very maternal female gorilla.
GENKI's father is MAKK.
GENKI's mother is HIROMI.
First son GENTARO, male (2011/12/21)
He was separated from his mother Genki soon after he was born.
Genki's milk production was not very good.
He was raised by his keeper for his first10 months.
Because of this, he is very fond of humans.
His face is so expressive, and everyone enjoys watching him.
Second son KINTARO ♂ (2018/12/19)
He is just very strong-willed and independent.
He has big eyes and long eyebrows.
The way he plays a lot with his brother Gentaro makes everyone smile.
We can't wait to see what kind of gorilla he'll become!
Strength of a gorilla .

No worries. It is too late for to get castrated. However, both zoos have to find a better place for them.
What about Monkey World?
I love Gentaro, he always seems so sad, as if he wasn’t loved! Many love you Gentaro, and I hope that things will get better for you❣️❤️❤️
@dianneconolley6086 idk if it sad per se... Maybe it's listless... He needs his own troop. He's ready and such a calm silverback. I'm afraid if he stays too long. He will become more aggressive. Due to his needs not being met.
I pray to God, who loves all of his creations equally, that Japanese zoos will put the physical and emotional health of these wonderful creatures above politics and money.
And religion!
Gentaro is such a good boy! He deserves all the happiness in the world ❤️❤️🦍
Poor Momo was so little when separated from his Mother, on top of that -- big guy had no father 🦍in his life😢. BUT he made some great kids! 🐒🦍
Yeah, he was separated from his mother when he was just seven. The ueno zoo did it now that they found a silverback for his mother Momoko. For the breeding project., Momotaro couldn't be with Momoko any more.
Wonderful video with lots of information. Thanks, GL! We're lucky that as a blackback, Gentaro is still a large child and shows no propensity for challenging Momotaro. But this doesn't detract from the fact that Japan's zoos have an unwillingness to deal with their gorilla situation. Kiyomasa is another example, along with Riki and Kintaro, who's futures are uncertain. The Fort Worth Zoo did what was best for baby Jameela, and sent her to a zoo in Cleveland where she is thriving. The Philadelphia Zoo sent our 6-year-old male gorilla to join a bachelor group in Nebraska, because it was best for him. Japanese zoos can learn from other zoos worldwide. Be cautious. But make the animals' well-being a priority.
@@seasonsofphilly1993 very well said and I completely agree.
@@murtl5595, I agree
100%. I keep thinking how Gentaro would thrive here in the U.S.
And our enclosures are typically bigger too
@@Balletcalvero So true!
Exactly...You said it best!😊
I had always petitioned that Kiyomasa and Gentaro be separated from their families, and paired with a mate. This is good, as both black backs can start their own families. However I do worry about the fathers Shabani and Momotaro. Although each father has different parenting methods their sons have been so long now with their families; therefore the separation will be rather difficult emotionally. Yes Momotaro scolds Gentaro more often than Shabani scolds Kiyomasa, but make no mistake Momo loves Gentaro, as does Shabani love Kiyomasa. It will be difficult for the boys at first to separate from their fathers, and mothers, but it is best to do so within the next 1-2 years. Even though it is family sometimes 2 silverbacks in a group have a difficult time, as both try and compete for dominance. I see the likelihood of this scenario happening with the Momotaro family than the Shabani's. Thanks GL for the informative video. I think Komomo and Monta would be a great idea!
❤Thanks GL. I don't know how gorilla parents cope when their dear one is gone from them forever. 😢😢😢
@@DEEv82 Male gorillas usually leave the family group when they grow up - esp. if the silverback is too young and strong and the son can't take over the group.
@@cecileroy557 Yes I know but I imagine there is still some sadness 😔 since they are so smart and aware. I also read that in the wild bachelors will occasionally stay with their family group, so that can sometimes happen too. I guess we'll all stay tuned!!🥸🤓🧐

It makes the most sense to match up Gentaro and Annie. It would be so easy as they both are in Japan. Come on, Japan, do what is best for the gorillas and enough with the politics of it all.

What about Nala and Zola? Both of those young ladies would be good for those boys. Nala seems like a sweet match for Gentaro..she has a gentle soul too. Zola's personality seems to be a good fit for Kiyo. Annie is wonderful but i think she needs a older gorilla. I love both families. Hopeing for the best for all of them. Thank you for all you do and keeping us aware of whats going on with the gorilla families.
There seems to be many available females outside of Japan.... But they're also appears to be no desires to get them to Japan... It takes great cost and great planning to do so between the two zoos.
It makes sense to not separate Gentaro til he is a silver back. He could still learn a lot yet. Better that he matures some more.
As he grows bigger conflicts with his dad will become more common and more dangerous(for both)
Luckily there are no females here other than his mom so they won't be fighting over that at least
Same can't be said about Kiyo, the fights there will be wayyy worse since they will be fighting over mating privileges
@@eddiemaiden2664I hope they at least have a plan in place in case that deadly fight does break out in how to stop it so no one is severely injured or worse. That is something I would never want to witness
Theres a blood bank record keeping on gorilla DNA in Australia and in France i believe. They are very careful on inbreeding. The main blood bank records are at the zoo where Shabani and hos brother came from. I still wonder if Annie could be partnered with Gentaro. Kiyomasa like you say doesn't have a match atm. He may end up at a sanctuary like Lope until something presents itself. Good video! 🦍😀
Love you Gentaro❤❤❤❤
Thanks so all the good info GL . It makes me sad to see these magnificent creatures may not get to mate and have their own family. I wish the US (us) would work with other countries to resolve this problem . I know we had an Agreement about the pandas so we should be able to work together for the benefit of this incredible species. I would love to see Gentaro be the silverback in his own family! ❤️ maybe someday the different countries can come to some agreement. 🤞
@@Elsa-zr8qd , I agree and I think that the United States could possibly help with this situation!!!
Right, I wish zoos in Japan could come to an agreement for a breeding project with a zoo in the US. It appears that there are lots of barriors to make it happen.
The Japan zoo program as a whole needs to improve. Other zoo's would be more likely to send over mates if the housing was sufficient.

Great information sharing, GL…thank you! It does seem difficult to separate males from their families. I observed that with Lope at the Twycross Zoo in the UK (he is now in a bachelor group at a zoo in France). I also observed it with Monroe and Denny at the San Diego Zoo in the U.S. (Monroe is now paired with Frank off-exhibit in San Diego and Denny was separated from his parents and is now with his brothers in San Diego). I heard that initially, Paul Donn, Denny’s father, would bang on the door of his inside enclosure, wanting the keepers to return Denny to him.
After the passing of the great Winston, I would be very interested to see who the new troop leader will be.... As much as I would like it to be Frank, I think there's relation down the family tree with the others, but I am not certain, as Frank is the offspring of Paul Don.
@@TheFlashyWeasel Me, too. I assumed Frank would be next in line, although I also assume that Monroe would come with him. Is Paul Donn a possibility?
Yeha, really complicated.
@@luvcats120 I believe he still as troop members? I haven't checked lately, I known Denny is in a bachelor group there.
@@TheFlashyWeasel It’s my understanding that Paul Donn and Jessica are still at the San Diego Zoo as are Denny and his brothers. They are in separate areas, but share the same habitat. They are allowed in the outside habitat at separate times. Now, I could be wrong; if anyone has more accurate information, feel free to share!
Thank you for the update! Love this gorilla family❤
Either way it is concerning separating these beautiful gorillas from their families, they need to create an attached enclosure where they could still see their parents while starting their own family. I know money is probably an issue as well.
As I state, the zoo has a plan to build another enclosure next to the current enclosure.
Thank for the informations,i love these family!!❤❤❤❤!!

You know Momoko is Gentaro's grandmother on his father side... The only non-related is Annie. I think that is the only female for him.
Yes, Annie is the sole young female gorilla for Gentaro.
No other female gorillas in Japan if the possibility is gone.
There’s also Rola at Chiba Zoo but she doesn’t like other gorillas and lives alone. I think she’s considered too old to breed now, anyway.
Re. Annie, matching a male and female gorilla who are both very young usually doesn’t work. Young females tend to prefer older and more mature males, and just see boys their age as pesky nuisances.😂
Gentaro and Annie might make a nice couple.

I'm pleased to hear more recent information about possible moves happening. I'm not well informed on all of the family ties among Japan's gorilla populations. Being from the U.S. it does seem as though there are females available as possible mates and I wonder if there are any talks happening now, or just starting to happen (possibly) to encourage and strengthen the goal of pairing available gorillas.
Thank you for the informative update. Hope you are feeling well.❤
Thx for update would love updates about the Ueno zoo gorillas, and Shabanis group when or if the make major changes. It’s really unfortunate that it’s so complicated and that Japan finds themselves in this predicament because I’m sure all want to work in the best interests of the gorillas
Thank you GL for the information.
Maybe they should make a situation happen with Gentaro and Annie from Shabani's troop.
Thanks for the information!
Gentaro é um menino grande.
Moving animals is not new they don’t have to reinvent the wheel. They have to form relationships with zoos that are better equipped and have more space.
Did Shabani family come from Australia? Gentaro & Kimoyo need to be in a zoo that equipped to handle bachelors. Gentaro is getting so big and handsome he needs better!!
Shabani and his older brother Haoko came from Taronga zoo, Australia.
Wow Gentero has gotten huge in just a short amount of time! He's beautiful like his Dad! Wow. I almost mistaked him for Momo!
From 🇨🇦!!😊😊😊😊!!
I think kintaro was enjoying his toy ball too much .
As much as I want Nene to live forever, i hope Shabani continues to be a patient dad for a bit longer as Nene would take Kiyo going hard, so would prefer plans carried out after her passing, at least Gentaro has a mating possibility, but leaving kiyo without a mate would be terrible
Nene could still live for 5 more years, and if that were the case Kiyo definitely shouldn’t still be there. They shouldn’t move Kiyo only thinking about Nene. It’s only going to get worse between Shabani and Kiyo, the sooner they move him the better.
Yes, Shabani plays with his son Kiyomasa hard.
As long as Nene lives, Kiyomasa won't leave his family, I guess.
At the same time, Shabani would be depressed if it happned.
A sad aspect of zoos participating in breeding of endangered animals is that the animals don’t get to leave their families on their own when nature tells it’s time. There is the need to find another facility or make another area available to the young adults and both can be challenging. I do hope that this zoo figures out something that suits this beautiful young gorilla soon. It would be a unnerving thing to start witnessing the males challenging each other and god forbid one or both get seriously injured.
Kiyo !❤❤
It really is Gentaro's time. Luckily Gentaro and Momotaro have found a way to coexist peacefully for now. I feel like the zoos and gorilla programs have let down Gentaro and Kiyomasa both 🖤🤍🦍
You said no zoo in Japan has had a black back stand on its own, but wasn't Momotaro still a black back when he was separated and put by himself?
No, he was already a Silverback at 10 when he came to Kyoto. There is a video on here of is move to Kyoto.
@@mariapittman8970 Thank you. He must have matured more quickly than many other males. Gentaro is 12 and has not completely matured. I wonder if staying with their families longer stunts their maturity... This goes for Kiyomasa as well.
His case is an exception. First of all, he was just with his mother , with no other members.
Completely different. In addition, he was seperated from his mother at the age of seven. It means he was already alone before becoming a silverback.
Yes, the birds are nearby. The size of the 2nd area is not so big. It is a room.

GM GL. Why was Momotaro moved away from his family when he was a child?
Good question. First of all, Momotaro's father Biju was died before he was born. He had little experience interacting with other gorillas in his life till he was moved to the kyoto city zoo.
His mother Momoko got a partoner for breeding. The ueno zoo separeted Momotaro from her. Just when he was seven. That's why I state that Momotaro's case is an exception.
I agree all zoos should put there health and well being first because there are God creatures those like we are
It seems that the only gorillas are Annie and Gentaro, who can breed. Everyone else in Japan are related. I learned that Winston the Silver back from the US San Diego zoo passed away, leaving all females. Perhaps something can be arranged. The females are so sad that Wilson isn't there.

What about momotaros younger sisters for kiyomasa?
They are related via Shabani's brother Haoko
They would be related, Momoko's (Momotaro's mother) second mate is Haoko (father to her daughters and Riki), who is Shabani's brother.
No, on blood line. It is impossible.
Gentaro is becoming a silverback, right. Gradually he wanted to be alone. That's the reason.
GL !!!! The only female available is Annie and she should be paried up with Gentaro,,,,,Gentaro and Kiyomasa can't win for losing when it comes to Kumomo and Momoka,,,for one those girls are Gentaros Aunts blood related, and as for Kiyomasa those girls are his cousins blood related cuz Haoko and Shabani are brothers so the only ones that can break the ice are Gentaro and Annie, ,,,,,,I don't know if it's true or not I heard some people say that Ai is on birthcontrol so she can't have anymore babies,, and right now the way that troop is going it never gonna happen cuz NeNe is to old and Ai and Shabani don't show interest in each other like Genki and Momotaro but I really wished these couple would at least try for another baby, In another video I watched it showed Momotaro and Genki trying to mate but Momotaro didn't do the job right he gets behind Genki and tries to mate but he can't I really don't know what his problem is lol. And also I think that all Silverbacks that has mutiple wives should be seperated only one wife per sliverback like we have with Momotaro and Genki,, those extra females can go with single Silverbacks ,, I hope you know what I mean like take Haoko and Toto,, she can go be with another silverback,, Nene I don't know about her cuz she's kinda to old,,,but Ai can stay with Shabani.
Shabani shows lots of interest to AI
@@KINGPHANTOMw85 Not enough to mate with her unless they have her on BC !!
Maybe once Kiyo is gone and they take her off birth control things will get better between her and Shabani
No enogh time. Hope the zoo will be sure to work it out for Gentaro.
It seems like they never stop eating. Do they continuously eat all day long?
They have to
I think they spend the day alternating between eating and then napping so they can digest. From what I've read it's difficult to get nutrients from the things they eat and their food is hard to digest. So yes, I believe that animals that large with that kind of diet have to eat a lot. The reason that gorillas have such large bellies is because they have long digestive tracts to deal with their hard to digest diet.
A gorilla has to eat at least for14 hours a day to survive. Even at night time, they get up and eat something.
Is it necessary to separate this wonderful family?
It is inevitable. In general, a male gorilla tries to leave his family to have his own family. There is an exception, though. Once in a while, a silverback's son takes over the troop.
The Chiba Zoo doesn’t have a suitable habitat for a gorilla couple or one with a possible infant. It’s big enough for Monto, who lives alone, but not for a growing troop.
They have a female gorilla, Rola, who lives in the enclosure adjoining his. They tried to breed them in the past but Rola never accepted him and was frightened of him, so they separated them. She’s never had a baby. Not sure of her age, but she’s not very young. I think she was probably human-raised, which would explain why she doesn’t like other gorillas.
If she wasn’t there perhaps they could turn the two habitats into one, but they have a commitment to provide a home for her for the rest of her life.
Zoos that breed gorillas are under pretty strict international guidelines concerning where and when to breed them, and which ones can be allowed to breed. Even if Monto and Komomo aren’t related, there may be other reasons why they’re not considered a good match.
They’re playing with fire finally when their fathers finally get tired they are going to do damage.

There needs to be a change in the family, they would fair better if they each had seperate quarters with other gorillas.Seperating Kintaro and Gentaro would be devastating for Kintaro, His father clearly doesn't present a father figure for him and he would be all alone!!....SAD SITUATION FOR THIS FAMILY...Also, the ruff gravel they are living on is not good either,,other gorilla enclosures have soft grass to sleep, play on!!...
You have some valid points. There needs to be better enclosure where they can the rest of the world. Have birds and other small animals show up and the enclosure needs to have more engaging activities. It's very lonely for them.
Also it's true that Genki and Momo doesn't get along very well and that Momo doesn't engage with his family very much. But it is because of Momo, Genki was able to conceive and had two wonderful kids, so the credit there goes to Momo. This also saved Genki as she was not well due to not having kids and a family.
Momo grew all alone, so he doesn't have very many father/husband like qualities. May be once Kintaro grows up, they can think about separating them but not right now.
I agree
My wife throws poop at me when I'm mean to her.😂
@@Trev-vq5el it's effective. 🙂
Momataro is only 24 years old and Shabani is 28 years old. Both will remain in charge of their troops for the next 10 to 15 years. At that time Gentaro and Kyiomasa 🦍 will be 22 to 29 years old and will to old to have their own troop 😢. They will most likely end up in a Batchelor group for the rest of their lives. They should be moved or relocated to the jungle as the Aspinall Foundation do. However, the younger males like Kintaro will be about the right age in 10 years time to be silverback of their own troop
I know my scientific knowledge is very limited and am seeing limited clips of these families, therefore missing 99% of their daily lives. However, I feel that Gentaro and Kiyo need to be the ones who 'decide' as some sons stay with their troop to act as muscled wingmen for their fathers. They trade breeding rights with continue living with familiar faces and territory.
It seems Kiyo is grappling with that now, with some days playing with Shabani but other days just wants to be alone and far from the troop. If they were wild, he may have already left.
I'm not sure Gentaro is at that tipping point, yet?
Gentaro will turn 13 this December. Already he is at that tipping point.
Wasn't Momotaro separated when he was still a black back? He spent quite a while alone before coming to be with Genki.
He was separeted from his mother when he was seven. So the situation is quite different.
@@Gorilla-Life Thank you, again. I appreciate your help in understanding Momotaro's past.
@@Gorilla-LifeMay I ask why Momotaro was separated from his mother at 7 years old?
@@luvcats120 Momoko was recommended for breeding recommendations. First - with Monta, and then with Haoko. 🦍🦍
Gentaro will be like momo and not know how to mate
Uh no he won’t he has seen Milo and genki get it on
No worries. He witnessed it.
If they don't move big brother something bad is going to happen one day. He should have been moved several years ago
Morning Momo Family😊🖐🏼❤💪🐒🌷🐒🏈🐒🔴🐒❤️

I heard a rumor about how Monta could be Momoko's younger brother since they both came from the same zoo and their acquisition by that zoo is cloudy. Don't know if that's true but if it is then he can't mate with none of Momoko's offspring.
Monta is older than Momoko
Japan zoos should’ve kept track of this
@@ChristineCole-kl4vu Accoridng to Chiba and Ueno's Zoo, Momoko is older than Monta, both were born in Spain. Both came at the same time to Japan. But there is not enough information about them, for example we don't know who their parents were or how they were obtained.
Easily fixed with a DNA test.
@@joseanibalsantacruzamanzo2202 Well someone is telling pork pies maybe
This is so sad
Hope everything will be settled well.
I also read that there is a possibility of relocating one of d'Jeeko's current partners for Gentaro, Iriky or Tayari, but the kids are too young
@user-iu2qf9xk1u oh that would be awful to separate the 2 brothers
Yeah, they are still kids.
