    Thank you! I watched the video you suggested regarding measuring for my body! Whoa!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Life Changing. Makes so much sense to start the measuring higher to choose the correct pattern size and go from there. I can see how well your black dress fits at the top and then it just hangs lightly all the way down. Not too loose or too tight. Perfect. I will be looking at pattern sizes differently going forward. Great information.

    Your dress is beautiful! I would like to try that pattern! I need to learn about fitting and FBA. I will watch the video you recommended. In my experience, many people do not like to read instructions. I also think that you have so much enthusiasm that you just want to jump right in and get started! There is nothing wrong with that! More than 90% learn by doing! Experience really is the best teacher, in my opinion! Thank you for your sewing channel! Love it!❤

    Oh, Stephanie, we are so much alike in that we don't want to study. I also only want to read the headlines. I have also discovered sewing with knits and love them much more than wovens. Your test fabrics are nice, my favorites are the flower one and the green one. I feel your pain regarding the dentist and the dog's surgery. I started a couple of pillowcase dresses but had to give up to enjoy my grandson.

    I have a casual lifestyle - we are retired - and wear jeans and knits. I’m making myself a pink tuxedo - not a knit. I’m nearing the end of treatment for breast cancer (super short hair), it’s October (breast cancer awareness month) and we are attending a black tie optional event at a meeting of Radiation Oncologists (husband’s profession). The jacket needed a full bust adjustment - FOUR muslins. The trousers need a full seat adjustment - only TWO muslins. Moving on to the vest. I feel so accomplished! Stephanie, just set aside a couple of days to learn the techniques you need. You will be so happy.

    I’m sewing baby blankets for my friend’s new granddaughter! I use a square of flannel and use embroidery floss to create a scalloped edge. It takes me about 2 hours per blanket if I’m uninterrupted and it’s a square yard. I made two Saturday and I’ll do the last one after church today. I learned the technique from my grandmother when she gave me blankets for my newborn twins 45 years ago!

    I really like your dress Mcalls 8214. It looks so nice on you. I too have this pattern and got my inspiration from Sharon Sews. I listened to what she said about matching fabric to pattern and I am so happy with the way it turned out. I enjoy wearing this dress. It is so comfortable. I look forward to your #Friday Sews videos and other too. Great work!

    I'm currently taking Whitney (TomKat Stitchery) pattern fitting course and am learning so much. I am also on a "fitting journey" and there is so much great info on TH-cam! I love grown on sleeves and just don't care about the underarm exposure 🤣 I struggle with buying fabric for "testing" with because if I don't love the fabric, I won't wear the garment. So I've settled on buying fabric or thrifted sheets (that are pretty or I can dye) that I at least LIKE and that don't cost a lot to make as tests. Being cheap is not enough of a reason for me anymore because the garment will just get donated and that feels wasteful. I'm working on a new dress for my niece's wedding this coming weekend - nothing like waiting till the last minute LOL!!

    • @FarrellFocus
      @FarrellFocus  ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol…THIS weekend? 😮. You got this!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
      I had a plan for my “tester” fabric…I really wanted to try some different types of fabric. I just don’t know which woven fabrics I’m going to like. There’s soooo many! I want to find my new favorites. 🤷🏼‍♀️
      Good luck with the fitting. It’s so fun to see these techniques working!! Hugs ❤❤❤

    Stephine, I think the black dress looks good on you, but I feel you could size down just a little, and if you take up the shoulder seams or put in some thin shoulder pads that might take care of the arm gaping problem. It's great visiting with you.

    • @FarrellFocus
      @FarrellFocus  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Mary, I was totally going to try your idea, but the pattern I bought doesn’t have a smaller size. Next time!!! It will be fun to do some more experimenting!

      from the mrs: Hi enjoyed yur vid. The black dress make looks comfy, however looks a little big on you. Since smaller pattern size not available, maybe fold yur paper pattern in 1/4 inch all the way around and make another muslin, or baste a 1/4 inch seamwidth stitch on your black dress and try on and adjust as needed.. I feel that pattern is definitely a TNT and can be worn so many ways and looks great!

    • @FarrellFocus
      @FarrellFocus  ปีที่แล้ว

    Your dress looks great - really flattering on you. I wouldn’t have chosen it based on the pattern cover, but it looks really lovely. Good for you focusing on getting the fit right. It’s the hardest part of sewing but we struggle on. Good luck 🤞
    I like to use ‘test’ fabric too. I’m making Simplicity 8245 at the moment. The jumpsuit and robe. If it goes well, then I’m hoping to make a few others as gifts (not too many fitting issues thankfully 😀).

    I have a 19 year old son with Autism. I am making us matching sugar skull day of the dead shirts. He absolutely loves Halloween and day of the dead. It is a beautiful rainbow sugar skull on a black background. He is going to be so excited when he finds out that the shirt is for him and that our shirts are matching.

    dolman "mini" / grown on sleeves... my opinion - place thin shoulder pads to give structure to the armhole. These pads will help with framing the upper body as well. If you have broad shoulders, perhaps shoulder pads are not necessary. Most of us do not have ballerina postures, so little "shoulder pad" help is wonderful.

    You are so right about size. So many things end up too big on me if I don't go by my shoulders and neck...they fit in my bust but ball up on me in my shoulders, neck,and arms...I'm smaller there. Yes,love the black dress on you!I've had that problem and I think you have to raise it up an inch or 2 in the shoulders. It's helped me by going up 1 inch in shoulders.The shoulder seam I'm talking about.

    I bought a pleater! I’m going to learn how to pleat and smock. I am so excited. Because I really want to make some cute little kid clothes - they are not cheap but I’m sure I’ll get my money’s worth. I’m finishing my husband’s 70th birthday quilt. It’s the first quilt I’ve ever made and I have to say it came out OK. Then I have a couple of little things to finish and I’m going to start making pleated dresses. Yeah! It is time to start thinking about holiday gifts. I can’t believe it but we only have three or so months.

    Luv this Black dress... looks so comfortable.. and great for many things.. totally reminds me that I want to make a Wanderlust dress (or 2) for the fall/winter... I am going through my fabrics.. organizing for some testers for my planned Alaska cruise wardrobe next year.. I am blessed to live near a specialized fabric store that sells water resistant and layering fabrics that will work great for the weather on the cruise..at also at home 😊 I am also working on starting for Christmas items .. as any crafter knows.. the sooner the better 😂

    That is an awesome dress, you look great in it! I wouldn't worry about under the sleeve. Most of the time your arm will be blocking anyone's view of anything else. My current projects are a much neglected set of pajamas, and a tank-top style sun dress. No pattern on that, other than copying a tank that fits me well. Then I need to get started on my nostalgia purchase of a 1970s pant suit! It's not in my size, so I either need to find a larger pattern, or really tweak the one I have.

    Two youtube channels that are great for bag making: Ae PooiM and sewingtimes. I've made bags from both. Nice to not have to buy patterns, too. Next up for me is another Ready to Sew Patsy overalls, that I mod by making fixed regular straps rather than drawstring style and lengthening the legs to be full length. I'm using some dark dark navy linen from fabric-store. They should be good for autumn weather!

    I love my RTW items that mix knits and wovens somehow (like a top with a woven front bodice and knit back for example), Therefore, I'd like to suggest a triangular knit gusset in the upper side seam area to see if that helps cover the bra showing, but still allow comfortable arm movement. Minor adjustment to pattern might be required and I'd probably avoid knits with too much stretch. Hope you figure out a solution.

    While wearing your dress, measure the amount of exposure of the underarm exposing your bra. Take your dress pattern and add that amount to the underarm section and redraft that area on the front and back dress pattern pieces and this method will eliminate the exposure of your bra while wearing your dress. This method works for future dress making of this particular pattern.
    You could add shoulder pads to your black and this will help eliminate the bra exposure.

      Get the one with the wider shoulder straps. It's like wearing nothing at all. I haven't worn a bra for years. Just a sports bra and these things. The sports bra I bought from Walmart with a back closure. I bought them during first spring of COVID when the change rooms were all locked down. Tried it on over my t-shirt. Like everyone else in the lingerie department. All the ladies helped each other with fit and It was the best fit EVER. I bought two.
