@@Draw5Move5 That sounds awsome! i'm currently rebuilding fundamental mechanisms of my game. But soon i need some advise on Power to cost ratio. I'm always struggeling with how powerfull i can make a card within the confines of the game.

    Hey Gabe,
I just discovered your channel today, binged watched almost all the videos lol love your content.
I am in the middle of making up my own Pokemon card game (i dunt like the TCG), I was wondering if you could do some videos or give your input on a few card game related topics?
    1) Is there a way card games can be made with out power creep? Similiar to how league of legends or overwatch adds heroes yet still seems to do ok atleast not konami bad.
    2) what are your thoughts on player interaction and counter play in card games? For example i like hearthstone but hate how theres little counter play such as trap cards from yugioh. Are there ways to make counter play fair for both players (attacking and recieving) in card games?
Sorry for long comment lol but keep making videos, you just got yourself a new subscriber!

Hi Lindel, glad you're enjoying the content and happy to have you aboard! I'll shelve those ideas for future videos, but to give you some quick answers now:
      1) In card games at least, avoiding power creep is INCREDIBLY difficult. The medium isn't really conducive to introducing new ideas and then toning them down if they're too strong or making them stronger if they're too weak, as there's no good way to simultaneously update all of the existing product. In Overwatch and LoL, it's possible to update every player's game at once since the games are digital. Is it possible to design a TCG without power creep? Perhaps, and if I can come up with a good answer for you, it'll be in another video!
      2) As to interaction, I think that any good card game has the ability for players to interact in some way, but they type of interaction kind of depends on the game's play style. The Bakugan tcg is heavily battle oriented, and so most of the interaction is based in buffing and nerfing attack and damage to win those battles. While I'm not an expert on it by any means, from my understanding the Pokemon TCG is also heavily battle oriented, so perhaps a route to improving that system is to introduce interactions that could increase/decrease damage from attacks (in addition to the weakness and resistance mechanic that already exists) or temporarily prevent a knockout (I know there are items that do that in the video games, not sure if they ever made their way into the TCG though).
Yu-Gi-Oh by comparison is a lot less about damage until you're about to close out the game, and effects don't have mana/energy costs, which means effects are the premium, and being able to negate or interact with opponent's effects is a lot more crucial. So like I said, it takes a different solution for each game.
Hopefully I've answered your questions, and thanks again for subscribing!

I hadn't known about the idea of vehicular choices before, but now that I know I do I can see them in all the games I've played. You've got a lot of awesome videos about mechanics and concepts across very different games; are there any that you find only work in certain mediums?

Lol you can see now why I say these concepts are so interconnected - they really are everywhere, but the beauty behind them is that they're frequently done well enough we don't realize we've seen them 500 times before, all done differently. At least, that's what the good ones do lol.
As for specific mechanics... the best example I can think of are certain random effects in digital games. I know in Hearthstone there are a variety of effects that add random cards from a pool of options, and in Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Links there are character skills that function similarly. While there are ways to minimize the rng of these effects, the fact that they are random would inherently slow down the games if they were physical - in the Yu-Gi-Oh tcg, there's an archetype called Danger! that requires the opponent to randomly select a card in their hand. Decks that play them often trigger multiples in a turn, so between shuffling, picking, and/or rolling dice for a truly random selection, things slow down. Digital games can avoid this. Other than that, I can't think of any mechanics that don't translate well across mediums off the top of my head.
