Radioactive Iodine After Thyroid Cancer

  • Radioactive iodine is a common treatment for thyroid cancer after the thyroid cancer surgery. We take advantage of the fact that the thyroid gland needs iodine to make thyroid hormone. In this video, Dr. Clayman discusses when to consider radioactive iodine in the treatment of thyroid cancer. Most of the common thyroid cancers will take up iodine just like normal thyroid cells. When you take a radioactive iodine pill, the radioactive iodine can go directly to thyroid tissue and thyroid cancer cells. The purpose of radioactive iodine is to kill any thyroid tissue and most importantly to kill any thyroid cancer cells that may still be in your neck. Radioactive iodine is not necessary for all thyroid cancers. Radioactive iodine is typically used for thyroid cancer that has grown outside of the thyroid gland, for example into the muscle on top of the thyroid gland. This observation, however, relies upon the expertise of the surgeon. Radioactive iodine is also indicated when the thyroid cancer has spread to lymph nodes or to distant sites.
Your thyroid surgeon’s experience and observations will play a critical role in determining whether you should have radioactive iodine therapy. Your endocrinologist will manage the administration of the radioactive iodine. It will not make you sick, and will not make your hair fall out.

Thank you. My mom just got total thyroidectomy a while ago and I’m frantic about the long term management of this. This has really helped me understand more of what she’s going through and made it easier for me to help her through this.

In the Netherlands Holland some hospitals say a diet is not nessesairy they say there is no scientific proof that the diet helps for the treatment. And some hospitals here do advice to follow the diet for a week... What do you think and for how long do you recommend this diet?

I’m wondering if I will need radioactive iodine treatment. I had a total thyroidectomy on February 24th and had my follow-up treatment on March 12th. The pathology confirmed papillary thyroid cancer with metastasis to one lymph node. I see my endocrinologist on March 24th and my surgeon said at that appointment, she will discuss the possibility of radioactive iodine treatment treatment. I am a 60 year old male.

I will be having RAI during the week of April 13th. I am currently on a low iodine diet and will have injections on April 13th, 14th and will ingest the radioactive iodine on April 15th. I do not have to stop taking my levothyroxine.

@@manishk1512 I'm doing well. I had three radioactive iodine treatments in 2020 and everything seems okay. I do have the BRAF gene mutation so my doctor and I are vigilant about possible recurrence. I am on 200 mcg of levothyroxine daily.

Great explanation, I got my thyroid removed in 2021 due cancer , I had liquid oral radiation small dose because the nuclear doctor said that I had nothing but just in case to prevent liquid oral radiation small dose . I hope it did the job . Also a I have a lymph node that got biopsy in 2021 it was benign, but this year 2023 it’s little bigger and it’s kind a bothering me ( no pain) , having an ultrasound this Tuesday . 🙏🏼

I had a total thyroidectomy in September 2018 due to thyroid cancer. On June 1 2020 I had a biopsy on a lymph node in my neck and was positive for cancer again. I had surgery on June 8 (mid neck dissection and right neck dissection) im at home recovering and waiting on next steps. Radioactive iodine therapy is likely my next step since it reoccurred in less than 2 years. I’m only 41 with 4 kids ranging in age from 18 to 3. It’s scary I know. God will protect us
