All this was part of the so called "winter of discontent" 1978/79. I remember people saying at the time that the UK needed a strong leader like Churchill. The people got Margaret Thatcher. Now, in the context of Brexit, I hear that the country wants a strong leader. Be careful what you wish for because you might get it.

No you are wrong. BBC were never off air for 5 weeks in 1979. BBC had wild cat strikes in November 1978 leading to the complete TV strike on 20th December, followed by the radio strike on 22nd December 1978. BBC Television and full radio service returned on 23rd December 1978 after a settlement was reached.

@Daniel Carter ITV were on strike from August until October 1979, with every ITV region apart from the Channel Islands off air for around 11 weeks. Channel TV in the Channel Islands had a separate union agreement, meaning they could remain on air during the strike, however they had no access to network programmes (because none was being transmitted from London) and had no full access to the ITV archive, so they had to fill 6 hours a day of home produced programmes, movies, imports, and whatever they could get their hands on to fill 5pm to 11pm each night.

In Ireland, both RTE 1 and RTE 2 (the only two channels in late 1978) used to both close down around 11.30pm (and continued to do so well into the 1980s). The worst night for closing down on RTE 2 was usually Sunday nights, closing at 10.55pm or 11pm (having only broadcasting for just 5 hours). If you didn't have cable television / illegal deflector system or if you didn't live near the Northern Ireland border or along the east coast (Ireland was rolling out cable television since the late 60's to bring BBC and ITV transmissions from Northern Ireland or Wales), you would have very little choice. RTE 2 only began broadcasting in November 1978, so only having one channel before, it must have been luxury to be able to change the channel.

The BBC pay levels was considered by the unions in 1978 to have fallen way behind everyone else. BBC management were under instructions from the government to keep any pay rise settlements to 5%. Unions at the BBC wanted at least 15%. This led to wild cat strikes before all hell was laid on the BBC from December 21st and 22nd, with an all out television and radio strike which blacked out BBC One and Two channels and on December 22nd affected their radio stations.
