  • There are lots of pros and cons when it comes to music today and music of the past. For as many good things there are negative things too. Not everything was great in the past and not everything present is better. But interestingly there are pros and cons to both. Join Anthony and I was we discuss the differences.

      Thank you that’s wonderful to hear and I completely agree. There are benefits to being able to have access to information we never had before. So much music is at our fingertips now. While I miss stuff from the old days I also love what we have available today.

    I guess the reason I collect physical media is because I like the contact with something tangible. Sure my digital collection is bigger, but I prefer my physical media. Concert ticket prices are ridiculous, I agree. The best prices are stadium shows, but to get a ticket at a decent price you're sitting in nosebleed seats. So disappointing.

    For younger and older bands, I think one of the reasons why they take so long to record new albums is because not many people are buying physical products today. It's a risk to put out a new album because it costs a lot of money to make it and if it doesn't sell, then the band loses money. Why put in the effort to make a new album if they get their income from touring anyways? I wish it wasn't like that.

    I think listening to a new album is like meeting a new person. It's great to listen through the album once, but you are at arms length from the album. To really get to know an album I thinks important to listen over and over again devouring your entire attention to each sing. Of course while holding the jewel case or album reading it over and over and dissecting the artwork. I am 18 If there is anything good about many my age having much of an attachment to their music, I make an effort to build as much of a connection to the bands that I love.

    Very savvy and complete assessment. I saw Chuck Berry, Albert King and The Who at Fillmore East, May 1969 for $4.50 (and was in the 6th row). I saw about 40 shows 1969 - 1970 and probably spent $200. Couldn't help but notice "Trout Mask Replica" just behind Brandon.

    I think the internet & other things have created more options for kids than what we had growing up. I’m 56, & there was not much entertainment choices back in the 70’s & 80’s. It’s a totally different world & this is one thing that I don’t like. Kids today are not connected to music or bands like we are!!! 😢😢😢

    Ok when I was 13 years old I was in a mall shopping with my parents, they said I can buy 1 album, you couldn’t listen to them before you bought so I wanted Jefferson Starship “Freedom at Point Zero” or this newer band Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers “Damn the Torpedoes” so of course I pick Jefferson Starship if I only could have heard both albums first. Concert ticket prices @&$” to that it’s terrible. Could it be artist that have been around for ever and releasing new material is because their fans are older now but still love buying music from their “old” favorite bands. I know when Styx came out with new music “The Mission” I loved it wondered why more older artist didn’t put out some new stuff and seem like everyone did after that. Styx has some great reviews on their album so many others put out new stuff too plus they had time to do it with COVID happening now no concerts happening.

    The instant and very cheap/free access to music reduces the value of the experience. I remember my ears jumping when I first heard If I ever lose my faith in you by Sting on the radio, back in 1993. I recorded it from the radio on cassette, then a few weeks later, the album was released. I went to the record store the morning it came out, got the cd, it was not cheap, the album art was great, and there where 11 new songs, aside from the single, I had never heard before. A physical product that I still have today, 30 years later, it still looks new, and works perfectly. No one can deny the decline of modern music, nothing representing the talent necessary for a song like If I ever lose my faith in you, could come out today, or has come out in recent years. 😁

    i have a wall of Physical albums on my office wall... i know digital music is the in thing right now.. but the thing on youtube is that.. your attention span is very short... then u see another new band.. and u hop on over to them.. and you hop again.. but with an album... physical cd.. u listen to it.. and you gasp the full potential of that album.. and re visting again a few months later.. that album becomes so close to you.. is like a long distance memory and it hits you... that is why physical so important.. but for digital is a way of finding new bands and songs... but a shorter attention span.. thank you so much for this video too sir have a nice weekend

    My problem with digital is for a lot of newer indie bands coming up and out they because of the expense, have to release new stuff on digital only, and it seems even if I like it, I forget that I even have it, so there is a convenience to streaming but huge downsides to it and most of it hurts the artists and also the quality of it because with digital, it seems everyone has a new song, EP, etc…So eventually I hope there is a return overall to physical media, as opposed to streaming ruling, but due to the convenience, as Anthony pointed out here, your not putting in the work to get it, its just there so its not as important or meaningful overall to the public. And its true and I heard Richard Marx mention this how overtime, what you have collected is shrinking, you went from the big album, to a smaller cd or tape, and now you have a little square on your phone.

    Im hoping one day you can do a video about record pricing. I want to support my local record shops, but they charge more than what amazon does for the same new record. For example, they have Taylor Swifts Reputation for $48, however on amazon its $38. WHY would I spend my gas and my time and an extra 10 dollars just to go to my local record shop? I so want to buy my newer records at my local shops, but I just cant when its 10 dollars cheaper on amazon. Record store owners should at least match amazon on new records. Just my opinion....

    Hey Brendan, is their a reason why bands in the 60s, 70s and 80s released albums every year or every second year and why did that trend all seem to stop when the 90s came around? 😊 for example: Metallica

    • @BrendonSnyder
      @BrendonSnyder  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

      It was dying out in the 80’s. The reason the 60’s artists did it was the industry was based around singles. After you had a hit, it was time for a new one and they built albums around singles. Also touring in the 60’s wasn’t like today where a band can be on the road for a year or two. The thought process changed around albums like Def Leppard’s Hysteria, and Michael Jackson’s Thriller were if you spend time on the album you can fill it will more than one hit and keep releasing singles from it and the album will keep selling. So eventually the model of the album went from one hit and a bunch of filler to multiple hits and the rest filler. Spend longer, put more effort in, and get more sales out of the one album. Consequently we have albums in the 80’s & 90’s that are some of the biggest selling in the world due to this new way of thinking about the album.
