    Hey, just a Tesla tip from a fellow tesla owner. Never charge your EV to 100% and leave it overnight. That could damage your battery over time. If you know you need to be at 100% but wont be leaving till the morning, use the Scheduled Departure feature to do it. That way it stays at 100% for a lot less time.

    • @LockettTech
      @LockettTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks! That's actually what we did. We use the schedule feature daily and only charge to 85%. We only charged to 100% because we knew we were doing the road trip.

    Hey there! Fellow Tesla user and also crazy roller coaster enthusiast here. The issue with using miles for the energy display is that it's based on the EPA consumption testing. You'll almost never hit that number with real world conditions, especially highway driving. I'd recommend using percent instead. Like when you programmed the trip into the nav system at 2:50, looks like the car reported you'd arrive with 54% battery and it looks like that was the accurate prediction. You can also pull up the Energy graph of the car. It will more accurately display how many miles you can truly drive based on your last 5, 15, or 30 miles of driving!

      Thank you for the tip and the support.

    • @alexnutcasio936
      @alexnutcasio936 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      True, BUT a lot of it depends on his HVAC usage and also his speeds. I've taken trips where expected arrival shows 20% SOc left and when I get there I am down to 5%. WHY? Because I wasn't doing the expected 55 MPH that the energy graph expects I'd be doing. Speed in any of the Tesla line really eats up battery. Add to that heat or AC and you're killing range. I always take 20% right off the top when calculating the range because I know that no one is driving 55 MPH; they're all doing at least 70-80 MPH on highway. In his case, starting at 308 less 20% = 246 less the 100 miles and you're right at about 150 which is exactly what he was at. I've found the 20% (for me anyway) is a good rule of thumb. If you watch Bjorn, you'll see that once he goes over 90 kph (55 MPH) in any of the cars he reviews, mileage drops precipitously.

    • @cgamiga
      @cgamiga 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yup, the nav will tell you expected charge at arrival, it's pretty accurate; and it shows round-trip estimate at very bottom also.
      Use the Energy app, "Trip" tab (when you are navigating), will show you Projected and Actual SoC curves, very helpful to see if you are using more or less than expected (wind/rain/speeding)... gives you some peace of mind. The "Energy" tab usage chart is not very useful for planning, just fun to see huge spikes when you put the hammer down, or go up & down hill :)
      ABetterRoutePlanner website & app (works on car browser!), plus PlugShare, are very useful to do trip planning w/ multiple stops, and to find 3rd party chargers- PlugShare is best to check and report status of chargers, which is a bigger concern for 3rd party J1772 level2 charge stations as you found :(

    • @natebva
      @natebva 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@cgamiga Yes to what Colin posted! I switched the energy display to percent and plan to use the Nav "trip" tab for projected/Actual SOC on arrival data.

      Speed kills range? They were driving on the Pennsylvania Turnpike, not the Autobahn. The real lesson here is that Tesla grossly overrates the range on their cars. The 317 miles of projected range turned out to be closer to 200 miles.

  • @alexnutcasio936
    @alexnutcasio936 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Curious, you started out at over 300 and ended a 100 mile trip at approx 150. Were you using heat or going really fast?? Once you get over 60 MPH, the energy usage on Y and 3 really increases. 76 West can move pretty quick, so you were probably going 75-80 MPH. Those speeds will just kill range on a BEV, any BEV. If you want Bjorn like range, you gotta turtle it at 55 MPH, in which case Philly and Joisey drivers will be running you over.

    • @LockettTech
      @LockettTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes to all! Well not heat but we were definitely driving over 60 mph. Lol. We also had 3 people charging their devices not the trip too. Plenty to cause extra battery drain.

    Using Non-tesla chargers essentially relegates you to a very slow charging speed. Also a fully loaded car gets a shorter range. So does a predominately uphill or upwind trip. The app "a better route planner" has more options to input into the calculation that should show a better estimate of real range. You can increase the load in the vehicle on the app for example. I have taken a few trips in my Mod Y, but I only charge at SuperChargers on the road because they're easy to find and I got a year of free supercharging as well.

    • @LockettTech
      @LockettTech  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree...non-superchargers are only helpful overnight. Not for short period charging. Our main problem was out in Lancaster, PA there are not many supercharger options. There was one but would have taken us about 25-30 mins out of way. For a 2 hour trip seemed not worth it. Thanks for the support.

  • @Marvelofebikes

    Nice video. Great family. Actually have a cousin who just moved from Hershey, PA! Wasn't sure what your Kw/hr was for the trip but just a couple of observations... You have a packed car with the equivelant of 3-4 adults and you were doing 91 mph at one point (yes I notice these things (cop)) and those things will kill your range. I agree that percentage is better than miles. I always plan around superchargers as the other 3rd party chargers are a gamble that they work, plus they cost more in some cases. Enjoy your model Y and if you're like me, no more ICE!

    When I got my M3 2 years ago waving or just a thumbs up was an etiquette/appreciation thing since there were so few Teslas around. Nowadays there’s so many it’s hard to do it all the time but I still do it whenever I can but understand if the other driver doesn’t wave back since the community is just too big to expect everyone to know this. I especially give a thumbs up to every Model Y, with the family expanding I’m looking to get 7 seater Y. Great videos, especially the overview video was very helpful since this version is still not available to test at our service center. Always use PlugShare for how reliable a charger is and “Abetterrouteplanner” for getting an idea of how much actual range you will consume.
