Bruce Bartup I think you have got your tunes mixed up, Itchy Fingers and Highland Cathedral. The Fair Maid of Barra is completely different to what was played here.

Only just seen this, I am actually the base drummer of the band behind the drum major. This was a beating retreat we did between the main tattoo performances. Beating Retreat has its origins in the early years of organised warfare when the beating of drums and the parading of Post Guards heralded the closing of camp gates and the lowering of flags at the end of the day.
@@Fergus-Collington I left the UOTC the following year, but the massed bands of the Scottish UOTC's still do plenty of shows etc. But I don't know specifics

The Pipers were good in "Itchy Fingers" but from a Bass Drummers point of view the Drummers were very weak,especially the Bass Drum. The Castlemaine Highland Pipe Band in central Victoria Australia, of which I am a member would leave 'em for dead.
@@donnybarnett1065 Now i have nothing against Canadian Pipe Bands.Some are really good, but this here is a College band.The real deal of a bagpipe band is the Scottish Regiments,who are trained at the British Army Military School of Highland Bagpiping and Drumming in Edinburgh.
I only played the Bass Drum secondary to the other training I was doing. I did end up being drum major, but that was more for my organisational skills than my music skills!
