- How to buy a car in Costa Rica (it's not what you think!)
Many of the cars in the market here are exported from the United States after 10-15 years of driving. After they are imported to Costa Rica, it's anybody's guess what happens to the car, because nobody uses Carfax! Buying a car in Costa Rica is a total crapshoot.

In Japan, they would change out the factory cluster for a dummy cluster and drive the car. When time comes for shaken inspection, they would put back the original cluster and that would be the mileage recorded. Ofc, odometer rollbacks are also common there.

Ive lived in Costa Rica but also from the US. What ive learned is that they dont even look at the odometers. They look more at the overall look and how it rides

As a tourist, I want to drive a 2000's Toyota Sienna to Costa Rica to keep there when applying for temporary residency. I just don't have any idea of what the tarriff tax will be. If it can be done, at least I will have a reliable vehicle that should have a high resale value.
I think the taxe is about 50% of the car’s value…

Buy a new one if you don't want to deal with odometer issues, its the only way..... also everyone knows that all sellers change the mileage on the cars, but we don't pay much attention to it, as every car that comes into the country gets set up that way before getting license plates and annual revisions. Its a huge known SCAM haha . All people can do as this point is take the cars to a mechanic and get it checked before buying it... or buy a new one ... if the budget is low many people ratter buy a Chinese brand car with a warranty than an used one that may become a headache due to high mileage

@@Monkeyabroad I have now been off it for 3 months after 17 years of daily use. I did have a few days where I caved and smoked, but I didn't feel good at all, rather an anxious mess. Life is a lot better without it
