Thank you for all you share! I've been very successful with your chairs as you know! Your chairs won me a national diy competition that bought me all new router bits and a few other things to aid in my chair production. And thanks for using my pics in this video! Made me feel awesome! I'm sharing this video on my woodworking page! Thanks again!

Thank you for being so kind to share your tips and videos. The first time I saw the thumbnail on TH-cam of this adirondack chair I knew I wanted to make it. It's unique and stands out from mass produced chairs so much that I ended up buying the plans/templates for the chair, rocker, children's chair and outdoor table...lol.
I built my first rocker with my brother and it took us 10 hours over 2 days to finish it. I posted it to my facebook page and immediately got an order for 2 rockers for a friend that is building a new lake house. I built those 2 in about 15 hours combined over 3 days and think I have it down enough already to batch out 4 chairs in about 5 days total working just part time at night. I'm sure it will get faster the more I build.
My friend has since shared pictures of the new rockers on her new porch and I have some more folks asking about them!

Such a wealth of information. I'm looking to retire (again) in a couple years and I'm looking at taking my woodworking to the streets. Thanks for the video very helpful I think. I just starting out and have started to do my first project for myself, but would like to possibly go full time. Building my workstation with drawers and everything for my 3d printer's already made 3 mistakes only one was bad. The other 2 you won't ever notice as it's ether hidden underneath or by the drawers.
The bad mistake though is I messed up on the dimensions for all the side boards they was supposed to be full length -1/4. I made them the board dimensions of the lower support frame instead which is 1-1/2 difference so I just going to have a bit shorter bench. It's not that bad now I have room behind it to feed cords instead of being dead flat.🤭 You won't ever notice it as long as it's against a wall. Once I put the legs on and table top it won't be noticable anyhow other then from behind.
Looks good so far even if it's just a frame, but already stained it and put a clear coat on it which took longer to do then I thought. Staining takes awhile to get everything ready + hours of time just putting on stain/clear coats.

It’s pretty funny the example you used of the chair photos you took at a $500k home. You mentioned the home was really nice. I live in Southern California and you can’t find a home for less than maybe $800k, but typically you’re going to have to pay in excess of one million to get a house here. Anyway, thank you for taking the time to make this video and helping us to try to be more successful.

I should have been more clear on that. Back in the early '90's in Denver, $500K. bought an 8000 sq ft three story home with a 4 car garage on an acre of land in a gated community. And the homeowners were in the upper middle class.
Today my 60 year old tiny ranch house is worth $400,000. because Denver's housing market has gone insane.
I think the equivalent home today to what I was talking about then, probably goes for $1.5 - $2 Million in Denver.

For what it's worth, I am in the demographic James talks about. Yes, I give him a very, very, small donation on Patreon I don't think matters that much to him, but I am also not a wood worker and just dream of it in retirement. I dream of having a shop like James but will likely only have consumer grade equivalents. But what he is saying is spot on. In the rush to mass market globalism, we missed lots of super very valuable things. My house costs well over 100x this piece of furniture mass market availability, but at the same time I can't afford to tear down my entire house just to build it completely custom with a designers and architects aplenty. That is a completely different tax bracket.
We are a lot closer to wood workers than you think, just make our money in a different discipline but respect the highly skilled craftsman wherever. A skilled woodworker producing awesome results are my equals of another craft. Don't sell yourself short. But, yes, I bought his plans and want to make them for myself. I think there is a human mental health gain from just making things you can touch and see. Make something just because it makes you happy.

Question for you... I'm an amateur with beginner tools that I am upgrading at the moment. I'm wondering if you have any recommendations as far as brands/models of: Table Saw, Band Saw, Miter Saw. I'm not looking to buy professional $6000 sets as it'll be a garage based "weekend warrior" setup for a while but I definitely want to start delving more into this as I've found I truly enjoy woodworking and can see a future in it.

It’s hard to find redwood that is under 10%. The 2x12 are around 14 to 17%. I put the back pieces on all the chairs to prevent racking. I’m just worried if I cut the back pieces they will warp. Absolutely great informative content! Without question, learning how to effectively market your product is key in both growth and success. I do have one question and not sure if this would be more of a lawyer discussion. At 11:27 I saw in the background the white and red bench with the University of Alabama logo painted on it. I'm sure for just personal use, this would be no big deal, however I definitely can see from a marketing aspect, outdoor patio furniture with college theme logos would be a huge hit, especially between friendly rival neighbors lol
But the copyright thing comes to mind when trying to sell these. Do you have any experience with selling copyright items on your wood products and if so, could you offer some advice for other woodworkers to use when getting their ducks in a row with an attorney?

I have very limited experience. But I think you are exactly right. Making one for yourself would likely cause no problems. But making and selling them would almost certainly be a copyright violation.
I haven’t checked with any college teams, but I have inquired about licensing other copyrighted things in the past, and it was expensive and very difficult.
What I have seen people do is paint their chairs the exact colors of college teams. I know that you can typically go online to the college directly, and you can find the exact CMYK color of each color. And then have those made up for you at any paint store. I don’t think this is a problem.
But to be safe I think an attorney would be a wise choice to get answers.

i like that you say "build one for yourself, then build one for a friend too" ...thats what i did and id like to expand on that, i was hoping youd mention it but i dont think you did.....
when you build one for a friend or family member, build a couple, sometimes theyll want to pay you for them but i tell them no, instead, now i have "free" advertising....if their friends ask about them theyll send them my way

Made the thumbnail! I’ll have to thank my sister-in-law for the nice photos.
I am curious what kind of wording you use in your Facebook adds.

Hi Rhett! Beautifully done photographic display of the pair! Uncluttered, and an amazing background to showcase your work, which by the way, is just as stunning as the photography! Thank you for sharing your picture in the community!

The wording I use is a little presumptuous. But mild hyperbole is often necessary to compete in any marketplace. So I’d say something like this:
Expert woodworker - offering custom Adirondack chairs. Unique new anatomical design for extreme comfort. Wood species, finishes and engraving tailored to your preferences. Package pricing for 3 or more.

Hi James, I live in Southern California and redwood is readily available.
What would be an acceptable moisture content or how to properly let the wood dry out? That would be a great video, or any advice? Btw, I did buy plans and templates. Thanks in advance!

Most people just don't realize how much time goes into these products. I've had people say they can make it cheaper, my response is yes you can make it cheaper, but can YOU make it? Usually the wife is shaking her head no. 😊

That was great. You see seem to have made these chairs in different species of wood. So would you consider an "average" materials and labor cost for the different species ?

I have a quick question? I have a line on 2 inch poplar. And 1 1/2 inch oak. What are your thoughts on using either for the Adirondack chairs.

These chairs are awesome. Have you considered making a glider base instead of the rocker? I'm a big guy and the rockers seem to have a way of "walking" on me.

    • @KingsFineWoodworking
      @KingsFineWoodworking  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Rob,
I could look into a glider base. But I can assure you these won’t walk on you.
I’m 6’2”, and I weigh 475 pounds. (We also tested these to hold over 1000 pounds)
So unless you are substantially bigger than me, I can’t see it walking.

Hi James, I bought plans and templates to build these chairs from you recently. Question, you said that you cut parts out on a cnc router. I have a Shapeoko 4XXL cnc router; do you have svg files for cutting out parts for the chairs that I can purchase from you? Thanks, Dennis.
P.S . You’re a real inspiration to beginning woodworkers out there!
